I love that she was in her prime in the '60s, a time of racial segregation and tension, then 50 years later she performs in front of the first black president. Must have been a mutually amazing experience.

Back in the day when most radio stations were run by whites you had greats like Aretha, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner, and the amazing women groups of the 50's and 60's on the radio all the time. They topped the charts. That is how I know of them from the radio. I remember that in the 80's Aretha was on the radio a lot she had songs that were in the charts and mainstream radio played her like they played Natalie Cole, and the amazing Anita Baker, for example, all the time. There was quite a lot of RB on mainstream radio not just New Wave, Pop, or rock. Now you get a choice of crap and garbage for the most part anyway.

The word “diva” gets thrown around a lot lately, and usually negatively. But people forget that it’s the Latin word for “goddess.” And no other word could POSSIBLY describe Aretha. She walks onto that stage and gets an ovation. She sings a first line and gets an ovation. She stands up and gets an ovation. She DROPS THE COAT and people lose their damn minds. Why? Because she’s *just that good* . The one and only Queen of Soul, who rose from poverty and hardship in the Civil Rights era to become a legend. There will never be another Aretha, and we were all blessed to get this last soul-shaking, heart-pounding, brilliant performance from her. I've thought about this and talked with others about it a number of times, and only one conclusion is ever drawn: they believe that somehow _disliking something actually increases the likeability of something they personally prefer._
And that is a real sadness. :/

Ha! A musical legend who does not deny her age but fills a large hall with ease so that people are litterally stunned, and stand up in respect. C. King is under a flash of endorphins, and Aretha makes even the president stand up for her. That's personality.
Her voice is ripe, intense and full of lived emotions. Must be one of the most charismatic stage performances I have ever seen.

Aretha’s voice gives me goosebumps, so strong and pulls me in. She wrings every emotion out of me and she’s not even half way through Natural Woman. Aretha’s legacy will live forever.

My goodness, how did I not see this before!!! Two of my favorite female singers from the modern era, two voices that shaped my appreciation of the kind of music that comes from a place deep within the soul that few artists bring out as powerfully and gracefully as Carole King and The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin have done. I was sitting here crying like a baby. I get the feeling from Ms. King's reaction at the beginning of the song that Ms. Franklin doesn't perform at the piano too often. This performance right here just might be the pinnacle of everything that is good and wonderful about music. Carole King, Aretha Franklin, if you're reading this: THANK YOU for so many years of wonderful, wonderful music and artistry!!!
