Your Golf R honestly is a dream can you please do a running cost video like how much a tank is how long last you and stuff like that please really interested
I think really to summerise, it's the extra gear with the DSG which is the major difference, slightly more power and torque, the digital dashboard, and LED headlights. Everything else is the same.
@@PSKHIS34 He's just jealous over the cars this video's host (hampshirephoto) owns. So he has to throw in some kind of class-envy/class-warfare, socialist whiner comment.
2019 Mk7.5 R owner here and I prefer the analogue guages too, especially at night, The digital dash is just too bright and garish. The old dials just look much nicer to me (very subjective of course)
Prefer the 7.5 interior but have to say prefer the aesthetics of the 7. There's one main reason for that. You can buy a cooking version Golf and spec an 'R-Design' kit for it. The R-Design bumpers look almost identical to the R. So many times I've mistaken, at a distance, a basic Golf 7.5 with an R-Design kit for an actual R. It's demeaned the proper MK7.5 R.
Must say as a 2014 Mk7 R owner I found this video very interesting. One thing to add to the changes between the cars is the location of the ACC sensor. On the Mk7 it is located in the plastic panel below the grill, on the 7.5 it is hidden behind the VW badge on the bonnet. Personally speaking the styling of the 7.5 is just that bit sharper than its predecessor and the digital dash is most impressive.
Thanks for the comparison! 👍 More differences to the MK 7.0: -smaller rear mirror -memory driver seat with electric seats -+10 HP and +20NM torque (no OPF) -LED headlights -updated multimedia software
I have the mk7.5 GTI and the car displayed on dash and entertainment screen is the GTI. I find it odd that they didn’t use the R on the R. Great video by the way
There are AC controls on the screen if you go to that screen, well they do on the larger screen. You also find the heated windscreen there if you spec'ed that as an option
@mystik star For a 2012 model maybe.... I mean they are pretty obtainable and hardly something I’d classify as a dream car but the low mileage 16s and up are atleast $35k for one that hasn’t been in a wreck.
There were a few minor things dropped on the Mk7.5. The MK7 has: Carpeted spare tire well Sunroof and other head buttons light up at night Drawer under driver seat AC vent inside glove box
I’d definitely go for that manual 3 door combination, looks great and I’m sure drives great too. I love the facelift, but weirdly I think I might be the minority here but I think I prefer the 7!
hampshirephoto I think the good thing about Golfs is they’ll always look cool. Even the older ones you see, that are in clean condition still look great. They seem too age very well
Does the mk7.5 have the 7 speed dsg as apposed to the 6 speed? I only ask because testing the mk7 (because all I can afford) the revs are really high when doing motorway speeds I noticed
@adamf1979 this is pretty much the same across the board and is why I'd really hesitate to buy new. The car I have now cost 2/3 of the new price being 3 years old with 17K on the clock. to look at it you'd never know it was used and it's every bit as much of the car as it was when new, except 2/3 of the price.
1 other thing: The 7.5's DSG is stronger than the 7's, as it can handle more torque before running into problems. Obviously this only matters if you intend to build it, since they're both robust transmissions to begin with.
I prefer the look of the older car. Love the standard 18s and also the analogue dials! Other than that the newer car is better in every way to be fair. Great video though
If you buy a MK7 Golf R with over 40K on the clock please make sure the DSG box has had it's oil and filter changed. Same for the Haldex system. This can prevent big problems and big bills. I have a MK7 DSG R and it is the fastest most comfortable best balanced and reliable car I have ever had. In six years of ownership, repair wise it has had a new water pump seal and a new speed sensor on one of the wheels. Love the thing, and it can relax you totally one minute and blow your mind the next.
Love the video, new subscriber and fellow 7.5 owner, regardless of the changes between the 7 and 7.5 I am sure we can all agree that the Golf R is a pretty superb car, and I don't feel left out when driving alongside RS's,M's and AMG's
I was literally screaming this at the screen as I watched. If the window fogs up as I'm driving along, I DO NOT want to have to take my eyes off the road to try and move my finger to a touch button, press it and then take my eyes off the road again to see if a little light came on to show it worked. With a physical button, if you know where it is you can find it without taking your eyes off the road and then press it - knowing that it worked because you felt it move. Touch screen is fine, but only for complex functions that are rarely done, like programming satnav or changing car settings.
I like the standard gauges since they are way more reliable. I’ve seen info systems crash and restart on various German cars and I will be scared if my speedo meter dies one day on the high way due to some system failure. I know it has much higher probability as I work on software...
Vicky Donor We’ve had a win in Australia with the Grid edition. No virtual cockpit, no electric seats and no leather but still gets the rest of the standard Aussie spec. Mine was the equivalent of just under $24000 with a sunroof.

You CANNOT order a new golf R in the uk or Europe at the moment due to the new emissions tests, you can’t even spec one, all R’s up until this point have been available in manual or DSG, both 7 and 7.5 have Cadiz wheels as stock and both could have the option of the Pretoria’s, the infotainment screen was 5.8” in the early models until sept 2015 (MIB1) where it changed to a 6.5” screen (MIB2), throughout this time until the facelift car was launched you could spec a discover pro system with an 8” screen in place of the smaller screens, the “basic” discover system in the 2017+ facelift model (MIB2.5) has an 8” screen as standard fitment and the discover pro a 9.2” screen available as an option, (MIB1 is also lower resolution than MIB2),

Another great vid Luke. I have Mk7.5 (Jan2018) estate if you want to do a comparison? I’m keen to know how much more “chuckable” a hatch is to an estate in the bends! And the 0.60mph times difference in real life..
You didn't highlight the differences between the VW badges on the front. The older Golf R has a proper badge while on the new Golf R 7.5 it's actually a sticker.
I just bought an R and just wanted to say dont buy the S3, you can get all that in the R for about 10k cheaper. With the s3 you’re paying for the audi logo imo
I drive a 7.5 R myself, another thing thats different that i very much like is that it has Wireless Qi-Charging standart with the bigger radios. So i can just drop my phone in front of the shifter and it will regain energy.
All light on both cars are basically smart cause CAN bus and diagnostics they have inside. Does not mean that you have dynamic animation of turn indicator that your light is smarter, not at all. Just it has different SW/HW which suports that. Rather than say smarter I would suggest to say static animation and dynamic. Sorry for that work deformation as I work like SW/System test engineer for HELLA company.
I'm looking to buy a MK7.5 R within the next couple of months. I see you have Dynaudio in yours. How much better is it than the standard stmystem and would you recommend it?
@introspect I don't expect it to sound anything like a 12" sub. I just wanted to know how it compares to the standard hifi set up and if it's worth the upgrade.
@@DanTheManc1981 dynaudio is only unnecessary weight in the car beleive me!!! Just like sunroof...and electric seats...i did not opted rear view camera either..one more thing can go wrong...

Thanks for your videos, very helpful, just bought mine yesterday (19 plate), waiting for collection now. Also had my list of must have's inc pretoria alloys and DSG
Cool Video Man. One other thing that was important to me, is that the Proximity Sensor is behind the front badge in the 7.5 and cut out in the grill on the 7. Looks way better not having that cut out IMO.
The golf r 7.5 needs from 0-100 km/h 0-62 mp/h 4.6 seconds. It is stupid fast i love it. The r performance has race brakes race slik tyres and an acrapovic exhaust. 🤩😘 Its my dream car but it is too expensiv 😭
Hi, There is one more difference in the interior the mk7 has an automatic rear mirror that darkens, where as yours is just a standard one (like mine). I would like to ask you to make a video, as you said you can do it, for the running costs and so on. This would be very helpful, because I’m thinking of selling my mk7 and buying the 7.5 version. Thank you in advance! Cheers
Ok so why dont both those cars have button start? Is it an option? I have a R 7 DSG with leather seats which are awesome but Its a remote key working on a proximity so i can leave it in my pocket and just start the car straight away.
Quick question, I have a USDM 2019 GOLF R and a mudflap hit my front emblem and now it's cracked. I looked closely and I need to replace the emblem. The problem is the emblem is different than other GOLFs.. I noticed that in most volkswagens the emblem is exposed and you can just pop it off with a screwdriver. On my 2019 Golf R the front emblem appears to be protected by a thing plastic dome. Do you know if that dome just clips in as well? On the video it looks like your emblem is also covered by a dome. Can you check please?-
It’s very interesting, I own a 2018 TSI, which should in theory be a mk7.5, but the only similarity between my car and your car is that my radio has capacitive touch buttons rather than normal analong/tactical buttons. I don’t have the virtual cockpit, upgraded headlights (US, so no fancy taillights here), or a 7th gear. TSIs also don’t have the ability to turn off traction control, and therefor don’t have launch control which I always found weird because it’s just a button, but I get it, not a performance model. But a shame that I lost all the quality of life improvements.
LOVE those wheels on the Mk7. VERY hard to get those in the states! BTW... not crazy about 2-door GTI's (or ANY 2-door ride for that matter) . If you have passengers it's a pain in the rear having to pull the seats up, and even more of a pain when one wants to quickly put things in the rear seating area or on those seats. Then again, I like the GTI analog gauges better than the R's 7.5 digital (virtual) "cockpit." Anyway, nice rides nevertheless.
@@rohndamaynes236 Yes... they are wheels from a 2015 and/or 2016 VW Golf R. Hard to get... and if you do find them they are obnoxiously expensive... and as much as I like them wouldn't pay the prices being asked for them, not even brand new. Surprisingly, most people are just kinda' "MEH!" about them... not very impressed it would seem. But again... I really like them. I think they are very sharp-looking and pretty unique compared to other GTI/R wheels. They do have a specific name VW gave them. If I can find the name of those wheels I will re-post and let you know. VW of course no longer makes them.
Great video, we have matching cars! One question, why is your car without push button and electric seats? In Canada, we get full electric seats and push button/keyless entry as standard. Is that a characteristic of UK Golf R’s? Or is it just the spec of your car? Cheers
Think this video has sorted part of my next buy this year .. Are the mirrors different? Looks like they were automated on the 7.5. Also I was originally, um and uh on the change from analog to digital gauges.. but I realised, it's going to be a hell of a lot easier to keep clean a digital 'screen'. (The headlights def look so much better on the 7.5!) I'm between getting the 7.5 Golf R and the AMG A45 (similarly priced models) this year. It really will come down to factors like, what do I really want vs need. Comfort vs Speed, Internal setup, fuel economy, features that the cars come with, etc. Which with research in the last few months tend to lean very much so, towards the Golf.
I have 2 questions... 1. Will Golf R DSG in manual mode automatically shift up if you hit rev limiter or red line? 2. Will Golf R DSG in manual mode automatically downshift if you for example driving 60 km/h in 6 gear and you push gas pedal to the floor or it will stay in 6 and try to speedup?
Boris K. Yes it upshifts automatically before you hit redline. In manual mode it won’t kick down unless you push the throttle right to the floor, or the revs get too low for the gear you’re in.
Is there a way to get that facelift front bumper look on a pre-7.5 golf R without changing out the whole bumper? Trying to save myself 10g on a used R.. XD
Hey I rlly like ur golf r I would like to know if it’s tuned like more horsepower? And I would like to know also does it affect the warranty in case if I delete the resonator ? Thank you very much

Good Vid mate. Would have been good to see what you thought of the drive difference. My wife has mk7 gti and I have 7.5 R. I believe the 7.5 is supposed to be a more rigid chassis, not really that noticeable, but I can’t believe the how the steering is so much different in the 7.5. It’s so much lighter and has a bit better feel to it. Makes it easier to drive fast.
Thank you very much for the comparaison I’m deciding to get the 7.5 R from long time a go and this video just inspired me and gave me good idea about the car i have the 7.5 R line diesel atm
Did you drive it? Could you notice the extra 10bhp? And does the dsg, especially the 7speed, make the allready quick manual golf into a very quick car?

My dad just bought a black golf r estate mk7 and the seats look very nice with the grey Alcantara and if it didn’t have it I think it would look very plane and boring.
Next Video you should do BMW M140I VS GOLF R 7.5 that would be a very good video to Watch
I'm working on it mate, coming soon :)
@@hampshirephoto ive got an m140i, i would do it.. quite a drive though
Bring back the blue gauges!
The Dudeface they tire the eyes way too much
Will definitely own 7.5R🤞I really owe my self this car😢❤
In my country mk7 got sunroof, fully leather seat and push start button, for mk7.5 got fully leather seat, memory seat and push start button
crazy how much better the facelift looks with a few changes
Suprised your 7.5 doesn’t come as standard push and start button rather than key start, here in Australia almost all 7.5 comes with that and sunroof which is a cool feature
now i only need a launch control side by side comparison with the mk7 and mk7.5 stock dsg... never found a Video like that... i guess the difference is just a slightly win for the 7.5
I like the facelift dynamic taillights of the mk7.5 they're preferable on the mk7. The front of the mk7 bumper is more beautiful than the newer one
The mk 7/7.5 is the best looking golf. Change my mind
Another great vid Luke. I have Mk7.5 (Jan2018) estate if you want to do a comparison? I’m keen to know how much more “chuckable” a hatch is to an estate in the bends! And the 0.60mph times difference in real life..
Thanks Alan!
You didn't highlight the differences between the VW badges on the front. The older Golf R has a proper badge while on the new Golf R 7.5 it's actually a sticker.
A sticker? Is it really!
Sean Walsh it is not a sticker
Stephen Richardson it's a flat 3D image rather than the actual VW badge. So yes it is technically just a sticker with a plastic cover.
Stephen Richardson please get your facts right before replying with a wrong comment.
It’s the radar unit
Think the MK7 PFL looks so much better with the manual 😍. Especially in three door, but with Pretoria wheels instead.
another great video Luke. Looking at buying a Golf R or an S3 - could do a comparison vid? Also, do a running cost vid on your R
Thanks so much Eddie! Sure, Golf R vs S3 coming soon :) Will also get the running costs video filmed soon too!
I just bought an R and just wanted to say dont buy the S3, you can get all that in the R for about 10k cheaper. With the s3 you’re paying for the audi logo imo
The s3 has moonroof option
the s3 isnt that nice imho, the rs3 however, but thats completely different in price ofc
Awesome videos!
Do a R400 conversion and drag race it against a standard golf 7.5R
Thanks Stephan! That's a great idea... ;)
I have a golf mk7.5 white r-line, would love to see a comparison. Sometimes it isnt about the performance.
They chepend the look of the 7.5 R with the R-line, I cant tell the difference on the road
True... exhaust / wheels though
I drive a 7.5 R myself, another thing thats different that i very much like is that it has Wireless Qi-Charging standart with the bigger radios. So i can just drop my phone in front of the shifter and it will regain energy.
7.5 infotainment screen does look a bit aftermarket. The 7 screen looks designed specifically for the dashboard with its chrome trim.
8:50 you can get the same infotainment system of the 7.5 on the 7 as a optional extra
I prefer the analog dials and physical buttons, otherwise I love the new MK7.5!
I'm looking to buy a MK7.5 R within the next couple of months. I see you have Dynaudio in yours.
How much better is it than the standard stmystem and would you recommend it?
The audio system in mine is great, but I haven't experienced the standard audio so I can't judge which is advisable!
@@hampshirephoto Ok, no worries. Thanks.
Mine has the fender and it’s awesome
@introspect I don't expect it to sound anything like a 12" sub. I just wanted to know how it compares to the standard hifi set up and if it's worth the upgrade.
@@DanTheManc1981 dynaudio is only unnecessary weight in the car beleive me!!! Just like sunroof...and electric seats...i did not opted rear view camera either..one more thing can go wrong...
you should have went for a drive on his manual, and maybe compare experiences and which you prefer
apart from that you channels going from strength to strength *thumbs up*
Unfortunately we had no time :( Thanks for the kind words though!!
Great video mate I notice there is a shark fin in your s no in the Mk7 ,love both too expensive here in Eire
Thanks buddy!
Thanks for your videos, very helpful, just bought mine yesterday (19 plate), waiting for collection now. Also had my list of must have's inc pretoria alloys and DSG
Thanks for the kind words! Congrats!!
Where did you get the chrome trim wrapped and how much? I’m thinking of wrapping all chrome on my car.
I wrapped it myself - here's the link: amzn.to/2AcAX5W
When was the golf R 7,5 released ?? Date please ??
Loool was the Astra released
2017
I have a 2018 Golf R Lapiz Blue 7.5 in a 6 spd manual! 🇨🇦
Kevin K if you want manual go rwd...
leons dashboard is identical to the 15 plate MK 7 1.4 TSI i had apart from the blue dials and mine was DSG aswell
stephen moore most vag cars where
how come when i look up the horsepower online the mark 7.5 has LESS than the 7. yet you say the opposite here.
Cool Video Man. One other thing that was important to me, is that the Proximity Sensor is behind the front badge in the 7.5 and cut out in the grill on the 7. Looks way better not having that cut out IMO.
Good point, thanks for raising
The golf r 7.5 needs from 0-100 km/h 0-62 mp/h 4.6 seconds. It is stupid fast i love it. The r performance has race brakes race slik tyres and an acrapovic exhaust. 🤩😘 Its my dream car but it is too expensiv 😭
Launch control is crazy!! Thanks for commenting mate :)
@@hampshirephoto no problem thx for the heart. I hope my english is correct im from switzerland. Im better in write than in speaking
Hi,
There is one more difference in the interior the mk7 has an automatic rear mirror that darkens, where as yours is just a standard one (like mine). I would like to ask you to make a video, as you said you can do it, for the running costs and so on. This would be very helpful, because I’m thinking of selling my mk7 and buying the 7.5 version. Thank you in advance!
Cheers
7.5 R is no longer 310PS it’s back to the 300PS same as the mark 7
7.5 seems to be pretty futureproof
LOVE those wheels on the Mk7. VERY hard to get those in the states!
BTW... not crazy about 2-door GTI's (or ANY 2-door ride for that matter) . If you have passengers it's a pain in the rear having to pull the seats up, and even more of a pain when one wants to quickly put things in the rear seating area or on those seats. Then again, I like the GTI analog gauges better than the R's 7.5 digital (virtual) "cockpit."
Anyway, nice rides nevertheless.
Do you have any idea what the rims are called on this Mk7
Ok, so those wheels were on the 2015 Golf R models, and VW named them "CADIZ" Aluminum Alloy wheels.
(The headlights def look so much better on the 7.5!)
I'm between getting the 7.5 Golf R and the AMG A45 (similarly priced models) this year. It really will come down to factors like, what do I really want vs need. Comfort vs Speed, Internal setup, fuel economy, features that the cars come with, etc. Which with research in the last few months tend to lean very much so, towards the Golf.
You should have done a back to back drive video comparing the noise and driving style between them
I have 2 questions...
Do you have the Oettinger kit? I’m guessing not however I was wondering the sound difference of 7.5 with and without oettinger exhaust.
What reg year is your 7.5? great video
Is there a way to get that facelift front bumper look on a pre-7.5 golf R without changing out the whole bumper? Trying to save myself 10g on a used R.. XD
I'm sure you can retrofit the bumper as they share the same underpinnings
Hey I rlly like ur golf r I would like to know if it’s tuned like more horsepower? And I would like to know also does it affect the warranty in case if I delete the resonator ? Thank you very much
Thanks a lot! It's not tuned no. Deleting the resonator will only invalidate the exhaust's warranty, not the whole warranty
is a golf r facelift under something else or does it fall under golf r when you search it up on auto trader?
What about the original
Spoiler is it curved from
Front for mk7.5 before u put ur lip on
been looking at buying a golf r but I would like one with the Akrapovic exhaust if poss, but there so hard to find, does anyone know of any websites or places to find them??
Good Vid mate. Would have been good to see what you thought of the drive difference. My wife has mk7 gti and I have 7.5 R. I believe the 7.5 is supposed to be a more rigid chassis, not really that noticeable, but I can’t believe the how the steering is so much different in the 7.5. It’s so much lighter and has a bit better feel to it. Makes it easier to drive fast.
Thanks Owen! Maybe I should do another video experiencing the cars?
Where did you get your paddle shifters?
i hate the excess of tech in cars so anything being analog or less electric motors always gets my vote. From manual seats to buttons and nobs
Thank you very much for the comparaison I’m deciding to get the 7.5 R from long time a go and this video just inspired me and gave me good idea about the car i have the 7.5 R line diesel atm
Thank god you made this vid, I'm deciding between the two!
Haha no problem :)
Same! 2016 or 2018, here in the Canaduh.
Did you drive it? Could you notice the extra 10bhp? And does the dsg, especially the 7speed, make the allready quick manual golf into a very quick car?
You can't notice the difference between the MK7.5 and the MK7 power wise. DSG is quicker to 60 by 1/2 a second than the manual...
