There are AC controls on the screen if you go to that screen, well they do on the larger screen. You also find the heated windscreen there if you spec'ed that as an option
If you buy a MK7 Golf R with over 40K on the clock please make sure the DSG box has had it's oil and filter changed. Same for the Haldex system. This can prevent big problems and big bills. I have a MK7 DSG R and it is the fastest most comfortable best balanced and reliable car I have ever had. In six years of ownership, repair wise it has had a new water pump seal and a new speed sensor on one of the wheels. Love the thing, and it can relax you totally one minute and blow your mind the next.
@adamf1979 this is pretty much the same across the board and is why I'd really hesitate to buy new. The car I have now cost 2/3 of the new price being 3 years old with 17K on the clock. to look at it you'd never know it was used and it's every bit as much of the car as it was when new, except 2/3 of the price.
1 other thing: The 7.5's DSG is stronger than the 7's, as it can handle more torque before running into problems. Obviously this only matters if you intend to build it, since they're both robust transmissions to begin with.
Does the mk7.5 have the 7 speed dsg as apposed to the 6 speed? I only ask because testing the mk7 (because all I can afford) the revs are really high when doing motorway speeds I noticed

Enjoyed your video, Luke, good job as always. Looking to upgrade my Mk 7 GTI to a Mk 7.5 R before the Mk 8 R comes out in 2022 here in Canada. I suspect the MK 8 R will have the same switcheroo to full digital-touch-everything and dispense with proper knobs, as VW has unfortunately done to the Mk 8 GTI. Has anyone commented on the folding mirrors in your comparison? The Mk 7's are manually folding whereas the Mk 7.5's are automatically folding when you kill the engine. I think that's worth mentioning here and a nice upgrade. Keep up the good work, Luke. Cheers!
Prefer the new light style of the 7.5 but I prefer the 2 angel style lights of the mk7... biggest difference for me is the side skirt on the 7 gives the side profile so much more stance, the 7.5s looks like a standard golf from the side with a rubber lip added...
I was literally screaming this at the screen as I watched. If the window fogs up as I'm driving along, I DO NOT want to have to take my eyes off the road to try and move my finger to a touch button, press it and then take my eyes off the road again to see if a little light came on to show it worked. With a physical button, if you know where it is you can find it without taking your eyes off the road and then press it - knowing that it worked because you felt it move. Touch screen is fine, but only for complex functions that are rarely done, like programming satnav or changing car settings.

Suprised your 7.5 doesn’t come as standard push and start button rather than key start, here in Australia almost all 7.5 comes with that and sunroof which is a cool feature
Great comparison, thank you! I recently took possession of a 2018 MK 7.5 and was curious to know what was differences were other than a digi cockpit and front end design. Cheers!
LOVE those wheels on the Mk7. VERY hard to get those in the states! BTW... not crazy about 2-door GTI's (or ANY 2-door ride for that matter) . If you have passengers it's a pain in the rear having to pull the seats up, and even more of a pain when one wants to quickly put things in the rear seating area or on those seats. Then again, I like the GTI analog gauges better than the R's 7.5 digital (virtual) "cockpit." Anyway, nice rides nevertheless.
@@rohndamaynes236 Yes... they are wheels from a 2015 and/or 2016 VW Golf R. Hard to get... and if you do find them they are obnoxiously expensive... and as much as I like them wouldn't pay the prices being asked for them, not even brand new. Surprisingly, most people are just kinda' "MEH!" about them... not very impressed it would seem. But again... I really like them. I think they are very sharp-looking and pretty unique compared to other GTI/R wheels. They do have a specific name VW gave them. If I can find the name of those wheels I will re-post and let you know. VW of course no longer makes them.
Good Vid mate. Would have been good to see what you thought of the drive difference. My wife has mk7 gti and I have 7.5 R. I believe the 7.5 is supposed to be a more rigid chassis, not really that noticeable, but I can’t believe the how the steering is so much different in the 7.5. It’s so much lighter and has a bit better feel to it. Makes it easier to drive fast.
One thing I think you forgot to mention, is the difference in the exhaust (I think). The mk7 has two fake exhaust tips which is why the inner two get so much dirtier. Where as the mk7.5 has 4 functioning tailpipes
Yes as mentioned above, both 7 and 7.5 have four functioning tips controlled with a butterfly valve which is opened in race mode, can also be modded to always stay open, but not a good idea if you do long trips as it will drone!, if you are looking to buy a second hand R try to find one with very clean inner tips, it’s a big clue as to how it’s been driven by the previous owner!, the ONLY difference between Mk7 and 7.5 exhausts is that the tail pipes are a different distance apart on the 7.5 to accommodate the bumper design.
You CANNOT order a new golf R in the uk or Europe at the moment due to the new emissions tests, you can’t even spec one, all R’s up until this point have been available in manual or DSG, both 7 and 7.5 have Cadiz wheels as stock and both could have the option of the Pretoria’s, the infotainment screen was 5.8” in the early models until sept 2015 (MIB1) where it changed to a 6.5” screen (MIB2), throughout this time until the facelift car was launched you could spec a discover pro system with an 8” screen in place of the smaller screens, the “basic” discover system in the 2017+ facelift model (MIB2.5) has an 8” screen as standard fitment and the discover pro a 9.2” screen available as an option, (MIB1 is also lower resolution than MIB2),
From MY19 VW have scrapped manual in the GTI and R. Any manuals will be previous model years. You’ll also find all GTIs now have the 245bhp engine. I’m pretty sure this change was worldwide.
You didn't highlight the differences between the VW badges on the front. The older Golf R has a proper badge while on the new Golf R 7.5 it's actually a sticker.
All light on both cars are basically smart cause CAN bus and diagnostics they have inside. Does not mean that you have dynamic animation of turn indicator that your light is smarter, not at all. Just it has different SW/HW which suports that. Rather than say smarter I would suggest to say static animation and dynamic. Sorry for that work deformation as I work like SW/System test engineer for HELLA company.
Another great vid Luke. I have Mk7.5 (Jan2018) estate if you want to do a comparison? I’m keen to know how much more “chuckable” a hatch is to an estate in the bends! And the 0.60mph times difference in real life..
now i only need a launch control side by side comparison with the mk7 and mk7.5 stock dsg... never found a Video like that... i guess the difference is just a slightly win for the 7.5
My dad just bought a black golf r estate mk7 and the seats look very nice with the grey Alcantara and if it didn’t have it I think it would look very plane and boring.
I just bought an R and just wanted to say dont buy the S3, you can get all that in the R for about 10k cheaper. With the s3 you’re paying for the audi logo imo
you should have went for a drive on his manual, and maybe compare experiences and which you prefer apart from that you channels going from strength to strength *thumbs up*
New to your channel after researching Golf R's. Good channel and for a youngster, you do quite well at articulating yourself. However, I think you need to research the term "BRAKE HORSEPOWER" VS. " WHEEL HORSEPOWER". You keep saying "Brake" after having your car dyno'd. Unless you pulled the engine and put it on an engine dyno, you need to start saying "Wheel HP" for an accurate statement concerning chassis dyno numbers.
It’s very interesting, I own a 2018 TSI, which should in theory be a mk7.5, but the only similarity between my car and your car is that my radio has capacitive touch buttons rather than normal analong/tactical buttons. I don’t have the virtual cockpit, upgraded headlights (US, so no fancy taillights here), or a 7th gear. TSIs also don’t have the ability to turn off traction control, and therefor don’t have launch control which I always found weird because it’s just a button, but I get it, not a performance model. But a shame that I lost all the quality of life improvements.
I have 2 questions... 1. Will Golf R DSG in manual mode automatically shift up if you hit rev limiter or red line? 2. Will Golf R DSG in manual mode automatically downshift if you for example driving 60 km/h in 6 gear and you push gas pedal to the floor or it will stay in 6 and try to speedup?
Boris K. Yes it upshifts automatically before you hit redline. In manual mode it won’t kick down unless you push the throttle right to the floor, or the revs get too low for the gear you’re in.

Cheers!
Thanks so much! Glad you found it useful
"The DSG Farts" that made me chuckle 😂
LOVE those wheels on the Mk7. VERY hard to get those in the states!
BTW... not crazy about 2-door GTI's (or ANY 2-door ride for that matter) . If you have passengers it's a pain in the rear having to pull the seats up, and even more of a pain when one wants to quickly put things in the rear seating area or on those seats. Then again, I like the GTI analog gauges better than the R's 7.5 digital (virtual) "cockpit."
Anyway, nice rides nevertheless.
Do you have any idea what the rims are called on this Mk7
Ok, so those wheels were on the 2015 Golf R models, and VW named them "CADIZ" Aluminum Alloy wheels.
Prefer the styling on the MK7 the MK7.5 front looks too fussy to me
Awesome videos!
Do a R400 conversion and drag race it against a standard golf 7.5R
Thanks Stephan! That's a great idea... ;)
Thanks Owen! Maybe I should do another video experiencing the cars?
I like your black strip on the grill on yours but think it makes it look like a normal golf.
Thanks! Yeah I see what you mean
Rear bumper and fenders are also different. I found out the bit about the fenders when I was looking into swapping 7.5 headlights to the 7
I’ll have the 7.5 in 3 years, can’t wait I have a mk7 gtd atm
The mark 7 is my prefered
One thing I think you forgot to mention, is the difference in the exhaust (I think). The mk7 has two fake exhaust tips which is why the inner two get so much dirtier. Where as the mk7.5 has 4 functioning tailpipes
The MK7 estate has false outer tips the hatch has 4 working tips inner 2 in drive mode all 4 open in sport...
You cant beat dsg farts. Only reason why i bought my Cupra!
Dsg isn’t the only option now, can buy 68 reg manual golf r
Hmm ok, thanks for letting me know
True, there's two manual R's 7.5's at the dealership here in DE, USA...
You CANNOT order a new golf R in the uk or Europe at the moment due to the new emissions tests, you can’t even spec one, all R’s up until this point have been available in manual or DSG, both 7 and 7.5 have Cadiz wheels as stock and both could have the option of the Pretoria’s, the infotainment screen was 5.8” in the early models until sept 2015 (MIB1) where it changed to a 6.5” screen (MIB2), throughout this time until the facelift car was launched you could spec a discover pro system with an 8” screen in place of the smaller screens, the “basic” discover system in the 2017+ facelift model (MIB2.5) has an 8” screen as standard fitment and the discover pro a 9.2” screen available as an option, (MIB1 is also lower resolution than MIB2),
@@cfbm125 Great to see someone who knows what they are talking about
From MY19 VW have scrapped manual in the GTI and R. Any manuals will be previous model years. You’ll also find all GTIs now have the 245bhp engine. I’m pretty sure this change was worldwide.
Great video keep up the good work 👌🏻👊🏻🔥 💯
Thanks so much man!!
You didn't highlight the differences between the VW badges on the front. The older Golf R has a proper badge while on the new Golf R 7.5 it's actually a sticker.
A sticker? Is it really!
Sean Walsh it is not a sticker
Stephen Richardson it's a flat 3D image rather than the actual VW badge. So yes it is technically just a sticker with a plastic cover.
Stephen Richardson please get your facts right before replying with a wrong comment.
It’s the radar unit
defo going to get a 7.5 after a few more years.
Do it, you won't regret it!
I have a 2018 Golf R Lapiz Blue 7.5 in a 6 spd manual! 🇨🇦
Kevin K if you want manual go rwd...
Dynaudio is a must!
100%! Great system
Another great vid Luke. I have Mk7.5 (Jan2018) estate if you want to do a comparison? I’m keen to know how much more “chuckable” a hatch is to an estate in the bends! And the 0.60mph times difference in real life..
Thanks Alan!
i hate the excess of tech in cars so anything being analog or less electric motors always gets my vote. From manual seats to buttons and nobs
now i only need a launch control side by side comparison with the mk7 and mk7.5 stock dsg... never found a Video like that... i guess the difference is just a slightly win for the 7.5
My dad just bought a black golf r estate mk7 and the seats look very nice with the grey Alcantara and if it didn’t have it I think it would look very plane and boring.
Interior on the 7.5 is insane !
235 35 for the 19's.
Also heated seat are standard on 7.5.
The exhaust is different.
Knew I would've missed some bits! Thanks for letting me know
Heated seats were standard on my 7
As was Nav
Adrian Bordoy spot on. The 7.5 uses a new exhaust valve that finally opens and dirties all four pipes above 3000rpm
@Introspect well it was 100% standard on mine, ordered it from factory and it was standard on the car.
Great Vid & nice car!
You should see the leather carbon seats. They look insane (for me) got them in my MK7 R. Fits great with the Tornado Red 👌🏻
Thank you!
I just gonna say it: I actually prefer the 7 over the 7.5
7.5 has a better gearbox that is the obly reason id buy it
Mk7 is better
@@fuadmahmood4813 nope , dq381 is a better gearbox , other than that is about looks and which you can afford
Mk7 is by far a better option for me
7.0 exterior looks better, 7.5 interior better
7.5 infotainment screen does look a bit aftermarket. The 7 screen looks designed specifically for the dashboard with its chrome trim.
Forgot to mention the 7.5 is more reliable , they made a great adjustment of the dsg transmission
Both beautiful cars . I'm on my second my first was a 07 GTI Love her . Now I'm I'm driving a 2018 GTI 7.5 and I love it she's my 5 VW
another great video Luke. Looking at buying a Golf R or an S3 - could do a comparison vid? Also, do a running cost vid on your R
Thanks so much Eddie! Sure, Golf R vs S3 coming soon :) Will also get the running costs video filmed soon too!
I just bought an R and just wanted to say dont buy the S3, you can get all that in the R for about 10k cheaper. With the s3 you’re paying for the audi logo imo
The s3 has moonroof option
the s3 isnt that nice imho, the rs3 however, but thats completely different in price ofc
you should have went for a drive on his manual, and maybe compare experiences and which you prefer
apart from that you channels going from strength to strength *thumbs up*
Unfortunately we had no time :( Thanks for the kind words though!!
They did do a 7.5 3 door manual as I have one!
Yes defo do a running cost please
Expensive! Mine averages 18 miles to the gallon
Adrian Bordoy fuck 😂 not going to look forward filling that up then 😂
Will get it filmed soon for you guys!
I've have got a stage 1 and a DSG map, 350BHP
Adrian Bordoy nice is that the mk7 or mk7.5?
You should have done a back to back drive video comparing the noise and driving style between them
It’s very interesting, I own a 2018 TSI, which should in theory be a mk7.5, but the only similarity between my car and your car is that my radio has capacitive touch buttons rather than normal analong/tactical buttons.
What year did the 7.5 start? Surprised that wasn't covered in the video...
2017
I own a white MK 7 ... it’s nice in blue I kinda like it but I’m sick of having blue cars for now
8:50 you can get the same infotainment system of the 7.5 on the 7 as a optional extra
I prefer the manual one
