Not realizing what time it is as I watch this recording, Mike just beat the game as new year's hit (literally landed the final sequence at around 11:59:30), fireworks now going off in what I'll say is a fitting celebration to his victory and a much needed delivery of hope to all of us who have struggled throughout the year. Thank you Mike for serving our country, and our world. Have a great 2021!
I don't even think I could refuel midair, much less land. F this game.
Refueling in air is actually very easy once you learn how. Its all about looking at that menu on the bottom of the screen.
The hard part is dodging the missiles. Landing the plane is harder than refueling.
Can't wait to watch this on the big screen
Because of Top Gun: The Second Mission, I assumed for the longest that they had made a sequel to the movie back in the eighties.

46:16 Another thing that Konami got wrong is that a KC-135 Tanker would need to use a Hose and Drogue system to refuel a Tomcat. The game could still be programmed to use the same physics. A refueling Boom like this from a KC-135 requires that an airplane has a refueling Receptacle and not a refueling Probe like the Tomcat.

It's not really a retro game, but I think you'd love Trials HD and Trials Evolution for 360. It's a side- scrolling motocross game with a phenomenal difficulty curve and track variety. It requires alot of balance and fine-adjustments to beat or get the best medals for each track.

Mike, the key is a solid, healthy, heavy stream every time.
On the landing people sometimes hit left or right twice, that's a common mistakes, you only have to hit either one just once.

lol. Got to love the concept of the game. If you can't land correctly the first time, then you MUST crash into the flight deck - No Pulling Up! No Exceptions! No Second Chances!
I think when I beat this game, I used tiger missiles and would take the plane up as high as it would go. None of the enemy planes could hit you up there and you’d be forced down only for refueling boss fights and landing. In the sequel you couldn’t do that cause they added a flipping mechanic
46:14 Game physics at its finest... You are flying at 2x the speed of sound while the Tanker is going under 550mph...
As frustrating as this game can be (and as much as I sucked at it as a kid), I can appreciate what they were going for with the "flight simulator" vibe. I especially used to like playing it with the Quick Shot, so I'd have an actual joystick to complete the vibe.

That's kinda funny, sometimes I'll lean or tilt a little when I play Apex, like I'm actually on the field, trying to peek corners and such.
1:06:09 Alundra was kind of the successor to LandStalker. If you liked it, you should definitely give Landstalker a good try. It does have a slightly long intro sequence, but it's not too bad. When you tried it that one time, you were like seconds away from being done with it. Then, as far as I made it, there aren't any more cutscenes like that going forward. If you go back to LandStalker, you could get it started right away, and let the intro play while you're talking and getting set up and stuff.
pause correctly at 46:05.... 2,259 mph. The Tomcat and Tanker are going Mach 3!! The Tomcat would have blown up or melted at this speed!! The poor Tanker would have become a titanic FIREBALL if it went Mach 3. The friction from the heat of this speed would have melted the aircraft enough to ignite the fuel. It would have been a spectacular fireball, though!!

This and Super Mario Brother 2 were my first NES games I beat when I was 6. Then I immediately played Final Fantasy and realized how much better of a game it was. So I beat this game almost thirty years ago? You could capture the chat and play off your capture screen. Then multi-task also.

Personally, I never thought of this as a bad game.. When I was very little, I remember watching my older friend who I thought was so cool at the time, play this and it seemed good to me. Jaws was a bad game, ET was a bad game, I never thought of this as a bad game tho. Now I'm watching you play this and life finally comes full circle! 🙉

I had a friend back in the day who lived up the street from me who had this. Refueling is the easy part, it's landing the damn plane that is hard. We never beat the game because we were very inconsistent at landing. I'm guessing we could only do it about 30% of the time.
Yeah landing the plane is harder. The missiles are probably the hardest part though

Yeah I love the NES Ninja Gaiden games as well. As far as Battletoads I didn't find it as hard to beat as some of the other NES games I've played. The one part that IS really rough is the Rat Race. But I think Adventure Island is a tougher game in general. So is Snake Rattle N' Roll which was also by Rare.
@@mikemateithe level that almost made me quit was the level with the all the precise turning on the “big wheel” that I think they call the lollapolooza. The other level I had a hard time with was the airplane level. That very last electric gate always seemed to get me. The timing had to be so perfect. My favortie level was the water level with the electric fish. I found that level to be pretty easy.
After about a year of anger and frustration I could beat this game over and over again when I was 11 or twelve. Now? Hell no!!! I'm not going through that again. 😂

GG Mike, those were some boss level skills m8. i never owned this game back in the day but rented it dozens of times, i never could beat stage 4, came close a few times but could never pull it off, this was damn impressive.

Alundra would be cool to see complete. It gets hard near the end as I recall, more puzzle/platform-ey compared to Zelda I think.
Also I'm curious, since you like Advanced Wars, have you tried Mario + Rabbids on Switch? You might also really enjoy Final Fantasy Tactics, the story parts are easy to skip.
Yeah I played some Mario Rabbids. Its pretty good I might try it again someday. I like how advance wars is all top down though.

Don't you have to be in beast form to trigger the boss fight in each level?

@@Starscreamlive No, it extends the game further as the boss appears 3 times looking to see if you have morphed and the final time the boss morphs and you don’t have to be in human form.

Right don't curse a whole lot but yeah it is expected like when the games hitbox is big as the tv screen!! Like when I watch mike and James I make sure to have my by headphones in when I am out and about in the store and what not.
One of the most dreaded games i owned for nes. Mario/duck hunt, dragon warrior, legend of zelda aannnd top gun. Every now and then id pop it in just to crash land, everytime....

If you like shitty games, try Athena if you haven't. Also try good old Takeshi's Challenge (this one is Famicom) and Hoshi wo Miru Hito (also Famicom, and it's an RPG). Both of these fami games are in Japanese so you might want to get a translation, I mean if you even want to try them. But Takeshi is kind of a challenge, even if it's super awfully difficult and cryptic.
From all these, I only have Hoshi wo Miru Hito physical, but I'll get all the kusoge someday. 👀

This a game I had when I was about 7 or 8. I was terrible at it and really had no idea what in the hell I was doing. Constant crashes.
I think it's harder to land an actual F-14 in real life. I remember playing this as a kid and couldn't land a single time after hundreds of tries and just gave up never playing it ever again. Well done dude.
