He (Dara O'Briain) now hosts "Go 8 Bit" a comic/celebrity gaming competition series here (in Britain). I think that anecdote was probably part of his act. But "since the 90's" is a bit extreme....! I have had a good few games I struggled with that I would have loved to have seen to the end. (I have also helped a few people get to the end of others! They really haven't. You'll get a half-decent one now and again, which inevitably get lauded by the industry with ridiculous hyperbole, "The best writing since Shakespeare!". The writing and storytelling in 99.9%+ of games is dreadful. The plots are unoriginal to the point of cliché. Ditto most story settings. The motives for your character actually doing what they're doing, range from simplistic cliché, to paper thin, to non-existent. The character themselves are lucky if they reach the level of two-dimensional. The complexity of human interaction and character usually portrayed with all the profundity of a shallow, inexperienced teenager.
