1:47 The green music block that appears: You'll notice that the left and right edges of the screen are related to each other numerous times throughout gameplay (and the top and bottom edges are related to each other as well), and this is true for many NES games. It's just a side effect of the way the video memory works on the system. The particular relationship between the left and right edges of the screen in SMB3 is a limitation of video memory known by the programmers, difficult to work around, and it has to do with this being the first game to allow both horizontal and vertical scrolling at the same time. This game introduced _diagonal scrolling_ , thus Mario's flying ability. There are 4 full screens of video memory available on the NES, and the arrangement of this memory used to support diagonal scrolling causes these kinds of graphics artifacts, because you're actually seeing a _loading seam_ for the graphics. Games without diagonal scrolling can hide the loading seam further away from the edge of the screen. 1:51 As you're standing there, you can see on the right edge of the screen, parts of 3 blocks that are drawn on the left edge of the screen. As you're running to the right, and the screen is scrolling, any time during gameplay, the right edge of the screen constantly shows graphics from the left edge of the screen. 1:47 Since the turtle shell hit the music block on the left edge of the screen, making it bounce up and back down, and the screen scrolled it to the left edge _at that same time_ , the block was drawn on the right edge of the screen and stayed there. _It's not supposed to leave the block there, though. That's very rare. I've seen graphics left behind before, but never a clean full block like that, and animated. It would have to be because the game had to finish the block movement animation, and the screen scrolled too far by the time it was done._ It got the green color from the color palette used to draw the trees. Hey Mike, have you ever tried the japanese Super Mario Bros 3? in US version, if you have fire powerup and get hit, you'll revert back to Super Mario. in japanese original, if you have fire powerup and get hit, you'll revert back to small mario. few other differences but it makes the game a little harder! :)
the game design here was genius. having koopa's kids, racoon tail mario (much more fun than the cape in super mario world which only makes you bounce), frog mario, giant world, i can go on. amazing game. this playthrough would probably be easiest with fire mario if possible i would say as you can just kill enemies much easier from far away

It is actually possible to beat 6-5 without flying with the Koopa shell but it's very hard to do. Drop onto the nipper plants while swinging the raccoon tail. You will get hit but sometimes kill one of them too. After that, get the leaf that is earlier in the cave to fly up there again, kill the other (which is now easy to do with one dead) and now break through the blocks to end pipe.
