If you don't know; Morgan is Juliard trained in opera and can sing anything. She has covered Beatles to Prince and everything in between.

There’s a comment on this video on the PMJ page where the commenter says they feel like the microphone would need a cigarette after this performance! I think of it every time I listen to this song, because I think we all do (or at least that feeling of needing something a little calming…). 🤣❤️🎶

I saw that comment as well. 😁 While that one was excellent, my personal favorite was by vocal coach Beth Roars where her reaction 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆, leaned back, embraced herself, smiled and said, "Her voice is a hug." The most perfect description ever. ❤💕

Great analysis as always, I just love listening the details you gave in every video. Now... you need to be taken to the church of her (she has a cover song with Postmodern Jukebok call "Take Me To Church - Piano / Vocal Hozier Cover ft. Morgan James")

I was fortunate to see Morgan in concert last year. Remarkable voice, with great power coming from such a small person. Engaging in every way.

Morgan makes me smile every time she sings.
May I suggest another incredible singer in a very different genre? Listen to the band Epica with singer Simoe Sions. For a great example of her voice, listen to the song Once Upon a Nightmare live at their virtual concert, Omega Alive.

Your comment about Ms James stepping out like that, and your friend not, is what I call "setting the stage".
There are two young, and frequently astonishing, female singer that I use to illustrate this - Miss Angelina Jordan is an exceptional vocalist, but she's all about the singing, whereas Diana Ankudinova always takes a moment to "set the stage", and afterwards pauses to give the audience a chance to absorb what they just experienced.
If you haven't checked them out, I'd suggest "I put a Spell on You" and the HTB performance of "Derniére Danse", when they were 9 and 14(?), respectively.

23:45 Of all the PMJ/Morgan reactions to Dream On that I've watched, and I've watched pretty much all of them, you are the first that's pointed out that ever so subtle hum. Up until now when you confirmed it, I've questioned if she was really doing it or if I was just my imagination.
26:51 "Oh my gosh, Dude. Chills." I've listened to her performance of this song 100s of times and at some point, and not always at the same place, I get frisson. It happens a lot when listening to Morgan.

Vowel shaping and power, sure, but nobody honors the lyrics likes Morgan does through those bang-on consonants. Each word is the word as written, only made art.

Thank you for an excellent reaction/analysis. I like that Morgan James performs in videos without autotune. Her instrument is fantastic. This piece was the first one of hers, and PMJ, that I heard. She got me hooked on PMJ and on her own music. Scott Bradlee and Morgan James performed at Paste Studios. My favorite is "Take Me to Church" : th-cam.com/video/LqRFwzgiOn8/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for this one. This was my favorite cover of Dream On until VoicePlay released theirs. It's still my favorite for vocal pyrotechnics, but VP is my favorite for the sheer emotion they bring. So now I have 2 favorites... Fun story about her. Her first big musical school was, as I recall, Interlochen. She applied and was not admitted. She contacted the admin and told them they'd made a mistake. After internal discussion, they decided to let her in on a trial basis, which of course, became a full admission. I like even that, at a young age, she knew not to take no. That drive is such an important quality in any artist! (This was from Elizabeth's interview w/ her at Charismatic Voice).

Yup, that's pretty much the story, she had the nerve to tell Julliard 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 made a mistake (well, she wasn't wrong). 😆 She has said that to this day that she doesn't know if someone dropped out and she got to fill in the vacated spot or if they made an exception and added another spot just for her.

You might consider looking at both Morgan and Haley's Wiki's to learn more about their rich journey.
Listening to your vocal histrionics during the performance, I find them overwhelming the vocals on the video you viewing decibel wise and while I'm not encouraging you to curb your enthusiasm for the music, you might consider adjusting your mic back a bit during the initial viewing.
And while I've got you on the line, I again, considering how you feel about vocal control, you explore the musical mastery of Floor Jansen, both as a solo artist and as the singer for Nightwish. Don't remember what I recommended to you to sample, but what comes to mind today is -
2019 solo cover of Shallow (Lady Gaga) on the Dutch show Beste' Zangers (th-cam.com/video/M68pe4a_9zk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TkiRYXzoDmutdHr2)
2013 ten months into her first appearance with Nightwish (and before her permanent placement with them) at Wacken 2013 Open Air in front of 82,000 fans, a professionally recorded show, and specifically this performance of Ghost, Love, Score (th-cam.com/video/47e_961OQWE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=adrSEO_Ldg-MqQVv). She is classically trained which is the base she operates from to control her vocals.
