    Chef AJ Interviews Douglas J. Lisle, Ph.D.
    Dr. Lisle is the founder of a new method of approaching human psychology and wellbeing. He describes this approach as Esteem Dynamics - its core insights adapted from a revolutionary biological approach to psychology. Central figures having major influence on Dr. Lisle’s thinking include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered academic A-list thinkers in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world’s greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort - born of Dr. Lisle’s 25-years of clinical experience wedded to the deep insights into human nature now available via evolutionary psychology.
    Dr. Doug Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego (summa cum laude). He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, where he was awarded the Presidents Fellowship and was a DuPont Scholar. He was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University, and worked on the research staff at the Department of Veterans Affairs at the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Palo Alto, California. His research and clinical interests have broadened to include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression, and optimizing achievement motivation. In addition to his work with Esteem Dynamics, he is currently the Director of Research for the TrueNorth Health Center and also serves as the psychologist for the McDougall Wellness Program, both located in Santa Rosa, California.

    Did WW many times. As a meat eater and vegetarian. Lost weight but always gained it back when I got sick of measuring. Their WW treats are highly addictive and nothing good in them. Didn't understand all this when I was in it. Family and friends always were positive when I said I was in WW but as soon as I went vegan it has been nothing but negativity and dumb comments. At least I know better and understand this is a healthier way to live and learning more everyday. Thank AJ!

      I totally went through this too. I went to WW 3 separate times and I ended up having an eating disorder. I was hungry all the time I even left the table hungry. They promote garbage processed food and say all food is equal man-made factory food and natural food, they say all food in moderation so high caloric food measured in such small amounts leaves us constantly hungry. Now I follow food density and it makes so much sense and I feel totally comfortable I'm not struggling with mental anguish about being hungry constantly. I spent hundreds of dollars going to an eating disorder counselor when all it was was hunger from food deprivation. I spent 30 years struggling ugh!

      Nutrisystem food was the same. It never filled u up & I always was hungry half hour after eating it

    LOL. I just got an email today from another weight loss expert about why it's a good idea to weigh and measure for food addiction. But I have to agree with Dr Lisle and AJ, if you have to weigh and measure then you're eating the wrong food.

    This is awesome! BEING FAT IS NOT MY FAULT!! I lost 50lbs on a 100% raw food diet and gained it all back because I was missing those plant based starches. It is a relief to know I am not crazy!

      Don't fall into the diet pyramid scheme trap. Raw vegan doesn't work. Vegan is about maintaining a whole foods, plant based diet, and it's difficult to gain weight on that diet if one is eating the correct foods.

    Thank you Chef AJ and Dr. Lisle! You really help me release the shame of being overweight, debunk diets, and teach me about the healthiest way to eat. I've been on WW many times and each time I would think that this time it will be different. The 'status defender' explanation was mind blowing! It hit me on a deep level. The only good I got out of the Bright Line Eating program was a blueberry muffin recipe that I veganized. I appreciate you! 😊

    At one time WW had a plan with a list of foods you could eat as much as you wanted. I can’t remember what it was called but it wasn’t point based. Basically veggies, starches, very limited condiments, I was vegetarian so I don’t remember the animal portion, but no cheese, no dairy except skim, no processed foods, sugar. I lost 175 pounds and they changed it, I think because you couldn’t eat any of the brand food. Unfortunately I went back to fried foods and gained it back. I love your peppy personality! I’ve been vegan for over a year but bad vegan. I’m eating too much of the processed vegan food, chix patties, etc. and have gained weight. I am ready to get rid of all that and go unprocessed. Thanks for the great videos.

    Great video - Dr. Lisle is brilliant as always. Thank you Chef AJ for being a bridge between the wonderful doctors promoting a plant-based diet who don’t really address the processed food addiction that makes compliance difficult and the well-meaning food addiction programs promoting an unhealthy diet that includes meat, dairy, oil. I love that your program both promotes an unprocessed whole foods diet *AND* acknowledges processed food addiction.

    When you do challenge the “way” your told you haven’t “surrendered” and your in your “disease” and an addict is undisciplined and if you listen to another avenue, that the “other avenue” doesn’t understand the mind of a food addict and that myself being the addict is undisciplined and need to follow direction and if you “leave the fold” you’ll end up fat and go back to an unmanageable life. Hence my appnt coming up with dr Lisle. Undoing 20years of this doctrine is a great challenge. I love your discussions chef aj. Dr Lisle and dr gold hammer rock. Thankyou x

    Great video!
    The programs that I have done for weighing food, advocate that it helps to 1. Make sure you are eating enough vegetables 2. To not have to make food choices during the day. 3. The belief that some people can binge on fruit and vegetables and need to relearn satiety signals 4. Reducing volume can reduce binges, not by restriction but that by eating a large volume can increase the likelihood of wanting to binge psychologically
    I don't think their message is to restrict vegetables or to force certain food groups, like fats.
    With that said, I didn't feel weighing forever was/is sustainable. My reasoning, is that it limits the internal locus of control that you can learn satiety signals once you start eating the right food. Idk the science behind the psychological affects but this makes sense to me based off of my experiences. I'd be interested in learning more about those assumptions that other food addiction programs advocate.

    Excellent as always. i really needed the reminder about energy density of foods as we head into festive season, and to base my meals on calorically dilute water rich foods, with minimal rich foods (such as nuts and dried fruit). Also, the eating arrangement that uses measuring food, there is a genuine ignorance plus an attachment to a modality. Using a model can provide safety, security and some degree of success, but there can always be refinements for the individual. I am grateful my mind has been opened to receive new ideas and suggestions. Thanks and blessings ❤️

    Absolutely fascinating. Just one thing I would disagree on, though. When I first started following Dr Furhman several years ago, one of his suggestions was not to eat unless hungry and I couldn't tell if I was genuinely hungry or just wanted to eat something. So, I asked myself "Am I hungry?" And for two days I could not answer the question, so ate very little those days. On the third day, I knew I was hungry and so began his nutritarian way of eating. I believe I was so stuffed with unhealthy food that my body could no longer differentiate between genuine hunger, food craving and lack of nutrients.

    Doug is such an easy interview, aside from McDougall, Doug is my favorite guest! I must say you did an amazing job interviewing him and engaging him. Most people are all over the place, or boring, or says "UM" 200 times, you rocked this lady!

      I don't know how anyone could have an issue with this message. It is spot on! But im bias, I do not believe in moderation at all, much like McDougall. I wont mention any names but Doug did an interview with a very famous TH-camr and I couldn't even watch it. It was filled with 400 "um um" and extremely low energy. I'm a professional TV Host so maybe I'm too critical lol. But I just cannot play the "ummm umm " game with people. I'm out after a few minutes. You held my attention through out the ENTIRE video! Your questions were specific as well as relevant. And you allowed him to respond with out interrupting him, you win in my book! Im subscribing based on that alone lol

    I think we are just an over-controlled society that are conditioned to believe we have to listen to those "authorities in charge", from birth onward. We are taught to blindly obey, and disregard our own inner wisdoms, and we pay for it in many ways, starting with the loss of personal esteem! If you can't trust yourself...

    Plant-based protein is possible - tofu, tempeh, edamame, beans, lentils, etc. In some of these cases, you can have more than 4oz., such as lentils (6oz).

    A lot of the low carbers talk about carbs turning to sugar, which raises insulin. Insulin is a fat storage hormone. They can't distinguish between refined carbs and complex carbs. They also say protein keeps you satiated and prevents muscle loss during weight loss. I've been watching their videos to try and understand their way of thinking :)

      helicart A high fat, low carb, diet may work in the short term for weight loss, but lots of diets work short term. It's long term health that is important, and long term high fat diets can lead to heart disease.

    I was part of FA (food addicts in recovery anonymous) for 2 years to help overcome an eating disorder. Long story short I had to recover from that eventually too - specifically my sponsor telling me 1. Being vegan was perpetuating my ED and 2. I had broken my abstinence bc I hadn’t weighed my meal at a party (but I didn’t eat off my meal plan). I was devastated. Therefore she told me I had to go back to day 1 after 3 months free from binging & purging. This program is NOT THE SOLUTION (not for me at least - and I set out to heal both the relationship to food & the body)

    Have recently done a 14 day challenge weighing and measuring my food and have come to the conclusion I could not do this indefinitely.     Thank you for this video! I did Bright Line Eating, a weigh and measure plan, two months last summer and lost weight but I was always hungry. I went off that plan and gained my weight back. I find I am most satiated on WFPB. I have struggled to stick to WFPB but I am determined! Just found The Pleasure Trap and the component I have been missing is being SOS free. I am embarking on SOS free now. I am also giving up my coffee too. Here is to a healthier me!!!

    I got sucked into the weigh and measure program along with a dozen of my friends who are all losing weight like crazy while I lose slowly. While reading the book, my alarms kept going off in my mind about it but I thought perhaps I needed it. Well, I gained with it because of the hunger when I'm used to eating potatoes and rice. I would do great and then grab an unhealthy snack and binge because I was so hungry. This video is so timely because I was feeling like a failure. I'm ditching the book and getting back to what I know works for me. Thank you so much! Both of you are inspiring me to keep going and never give up.

    wonderful interview, thanks a lot.
    I also am on a WFPB (no oil ,very low fat diet) for 2 years and feel great now.
    one question is there some difference in starchy foods and fruits in wait gain, because some days I can eat like about 5 Kg of fruit( only sometimes because sometimes I get a lot of fruit for free from friends and then I will probably nearly just eat fruit for one or two days)

    My mom lost 50lbs on weight watchers and is now slim and trim. I worry that she’ll (understandably) slip up and gain it back and be too hard on herself. She’s a perfectionist. I was happy to hear from her that beans now join the club of being able to eat freely for 0 points. I’m hoping to get her on the Whole Foods plant based track soon.. she’s already very open to vegan foods..

      ***** I can overeat on anything and know people with the same issue. I know very well that there are psychological reasons for overeating in some cases, which is an issue completely overlooked by Dr. Lisle.

    Maybe I can shed some light about the very structured eating for over coming food addiction: a food addict had lost any connection with satiety signals and with the body response to food. Eating was always with the head, about the head and not in touch of what is going on with the body. That's why it's imperative and very helpful to reeducate the whole eating process. Of course, basing the diet on plant base whole foods will make life easier.

      Osnat Shaibe are you talking about yourself because saying something is 'always' a particular way is incorrect if you are generalising about other people. There is a thing called Leptin resistance which is a biochemical problem not a mental problem and a cheese addiction for example has to do with the drug casein not the head.

Overeaters Anonymous does not prescribe a specific food plan, while Food Addicts Anonymous does. The most important thing in each program is that they treat the emotional discomfort that life brings that someone on ANY food plan could feel. I follow Chef AJ‘s food plan, but I also apply the 12 steps of OA. This has properly treated my food addiction.
    What Chef AJ does not understand is that there are two parts to the food addiction. The first is the physical craving caused by addictive foods. This part is what her food plan treats. The other aspect of food addiction is the mental obsession that brings the food addict back to excessive volume or inappropriate foods. Neither she nor Dr. Liisle address this second part. Overeaters Anonymous does.

    Also it is stated many times "how can someone overeat on whole foods"...I overeat constantly on whole foods. I can eat 10 bananas, or handfuls of dates, or loads of potatoes till I am miserably stuffed. I don't stop overeating. I feel I am a volume eater...and it makes me miserable, but I do it at least 4 x's a week. What you and Dr. Lisle say to this. I'm following this diet, but I do eat until I am stuffed and therefore can not loose 10 #.

      I say you are not eating enough low calorically dense foods FIRST and filling up on the and getting the nutrients you need and to fight the cravings for the more calorically dense whole foods. Dates my be whole but they are dried and the water is removed and you are not eating them the way they are found in nature. Don't have things in your house you overeat on. How many pounds of vegetables do you eat each day?

    I agree with you aj. Im not hungry till noon so why should i eat at 8:00 am? I hired a nutritionist years ago who demanded i eat protein dense meal at 7:00 am every morning. Told her I couldn’t do it. She recommended i at least mix protein powder in a glass of water and down that at 7:00 am.

    I am absolutely blown away by the patronising tone and superiority you both seem to be taking, as a recovering food addict, bulimic the reason why people way and measure vegetables 8s because the brain chemistry is profoundly imbalanced due to processed food and bulimia and at the beginning I wouldd even binge on veg, which would trigger the pathways in the brain which can lead to activating the cycle in a Nano second. There are a huge and complex reasons where people weigh and measure...

    There are vegans in these 12 step recovery groups, I am one of them. I know of vegans in 12 step food recovery who have been vegan for decades in those food fellowships. I am not here to advocate for joining 12 step groups or weighing measuring. I am very open to alternatives even though weighing and measuring has been the only solution that has so far worked for me and helped me lose over 150lb without surgery. I remain open to better alternatives

      Also I tried for decades to stick to whole food ways of eating, I repeatedly tried whole food plant based ways of eating. I repeatedly cut out all processed foods, I tried multiple healthy ways of eating over and over again. I have never in my life felt satiated on any way of eating other than weighing and measuring my food. I could eat many kilos of healthy veg and whole food vegan options. I binged on all of it. I was 340lb as a keto person and still 340lb as a wholefoods vegan person. I was 340lb even years in to being vegan. I had no off switch when would start eating. I tried having huge salads I still had no off switch. I seem to be among a variety of person who either never had or lost the natural way of moderating food. The weighed and measured food plans are moderated based on individual results, more food can be added if too much weight is lost, food can be removed if too much weight is gained. As with all things people stick with what works well for them.

      I agree that these fellowships often promote using oils as the fats which I strongly disagree with and believe needs to be changes. There is also a lot of fear generated in fellowships around day counts being like sobriety, if someone wants to experiment with food plan changes such as unlimited greens then they would lose the day count and it is seen as equivalent of breaking sobriety. I agree that a very small minority of people can actually manage to comply with many of the food fellowships ways of doing things. I am extremely desperate and happen to be unusually methodical and capable of complying with the regimented controlled way of doing things.

      When I eat the way I am naturally inclined to I gain weight continuously even when I tried things like the plain potato only plan and the no processed foods at all plans. I agree that food fellowships that I know of including the one I am in do not seem like ideal solution, I think there is scope for cross over. I personally do really well on a whole food plant way of eating that also is weighed and measured. I find a support network is necessary for me.

      Dr. McDougall says only only 1-2 fruits a day for ultimate weight loss
      Berries are the lowest in calorie density @ 200 calories a pound.

      @@jgrysiak6566 It's quite interesting that you posted your comment just now because I was today thinking about this again. Lately I've been eating too many fruits - like 4 apples plus some pineapple every day. Or some bananas - and they have about the same calorie density as potatoes, with none of the satiety. I do track my calories (I think calories count whether you count them or not) so I have not gained weight, but it limits what I allow myself to eat a lot. It's like 500 calories - whoosh - all gone with almost no satiety. So for the last few days I decided to not have any fruits and I've been snacking (when I feel the need) on very low calorie density non starchy vegetables, like eggplant and mushrooms. What you say about berries though is true. It does in the end come down to conservation of energy though. I was actually thinking of posting in a Starch Solution forum about the exact reasons Dr. McDougall says only 1-2 fruits a day. And, again, it does come down to calories. Dr. McDougall has personally told me that he does indeed believe that calories do count.

      @@douglerner3432 , Yes, I have a sugar addiction including eating too much fruit. I crave sweet after a salty meal. Cutting out all the sugary condiments I was eating. Just figured out that a small jar of bread & butter relish I was eating has 134 grams of sugar. That's 34 teaspoons sugar in that small jar.

    So what about a person that has lost 150 lbs from distal gastric bypass but gained back 80. She's early 40s and doesn't have any medications or illness that I'm aware of but wants to be vegan. Would this lifestyle work for her? I'm stumped on how to help when her stomach size has been shrunk. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

      Gastric Bypass is sad :( She will most likely need to eat more calorie dense foods (flours, dates) but will have to play around to see how high she can go without gaining weight so that she can still get all of her nutrients. She might also succeed on things like fruit which are low in calorie density but I think emptied quicker by the stomach, allowing her to eat more frequently.

    Mostly excellent. I think that Dr. Lisle's attitude re people knowing whether or not they are hungry may be unsound. There are people who were told, repeatedly, when they were raised that they were NOT hungry when they said they were- for whatever reason. Perhaps the parent didn't have enough food for their family. Perhaps the parent was mentally ill or unkind. Perhaps the child was heavy, and the parent was trying to get them to eat less. There are, also, reasons that people stop eating even though they feel hungry. Thank You.

    Note: there are medications (anti-depressants, for instance) that affect the way bodies process food. Even if the person changes nothing about their lifestyle, including eating (and may even eat LESS), they may gain weight (often a large amount). Thank You.

    Chef AJ, you mentioned that you don’t eat nuts or seeds. I’ve relied on eating these to get those certain nutrients. Are you simply taking supplements instead?
    Asking because I have a weight problem and I’m trying to lose weight but am scared of losing those nutrients if I cut out nuts and seeds :(

      If you are overweight you should be scared of the excesses. Do you honesty know anyone who ever got sick from missing any nutrients? Or from not eating a food that so many people cannot eat anyway due to allergies or GI conditions. Anything in them you can get from eating greens. Yip can have your blood tested to show any nutrients. The fat you eat is the fat you wear.

    I am starting a plant base diet but it is harder having a husband that is a meat lover specially when its me cooking this food for him. He is not over weight but I am! He will not give up meat and dairy at all and that just makes it harder on me. I would love to see a video on something like this but couldn't find any. Thank

      Hang in there I’ve been vegan since 2010 and lol my hubby use to eat only my food while we dated but he could eat what he wanted but we are married and yes he eats me I HAVE A GAS MASK really can’t take the smell of his meat cooking. He now takes the air fryer on porch. It’s is hard though but doable

    Potato Fact: Lets stop Bashing the Poor Potato and lets start Mashing 'em ..they dont lead to weight gain (NO FAT ADDED)..1 large Potato has just 150 or so calories . You need to consume 7 to 15 pounds of 'em/ day just to maintain your current weight.

      @@simpleesunshine4591 Remember tortillas are on the higher density food scale. The best kind just contain corn and water. If trying to lose weight, they should be limited or eliminated altogether, depending on your progress.

    In the video you both state that if you are eating foods that are 500 calories and under per 1# of food..even if you overeat you will not gain weight and will loose. This would include bananas and dates as they are under 500 calories per 1#...but when I add bananas/dates as meal to my diet (which the rest is all veg, no sugar, no salt, no isle) I gain weight.

      Dates ARE NOT 500n calories around! They are 1,300 calories per pound almost as high in CD as SUGAR!!! And even higher than meat or avocados

      Oh good to know. I thought I had looked it up. NO WONDER!!! Thank you Chef A.J. good grief. I am blushing. I have been eating an extra 1300 calories a day. So I just went to the store, bought some organic new red potatoes, put them in my InstaPot and had them with Hatch Green chillies on top. I haven't eaten cooked food in 7 months. So I am going to try and be raw during the day...more greens, little less fruit and then potato at night. I usually have one big box of Organic Girls Spinach blended, as I do not digest Vegetable matter very well. But I can do alfalfa sprouts so I will have 2 cups of them with tomato, red bell pepper (as they are fruit and I can digest them)with a raw salsa I make (tomato, cucumber, cilantro, green onion tops and little jalapeño or Hatch chili, lime juice) So maybe 2 lbs of veg and then mostly fruit. Melon, peach, mango, pineapple.

      cronometer.com is a really good website to look up the calorie content of food. They list it by volume or weight, and have thousands of food items in the database. Very easy to use. Also a great way to track other nutrients such as iron, calcium, protein, etc. Not that you need to track those on a whole food plant based diet.

      I have been using Cronometer...but I don't think honestly putting everything in. From both yours and AJ's response I was eating an extra 500 calories a day from dates. :( Thank you for pointing this out to me. I also had to cut down on bananas. And keep calories to 12oo to start to actually loose weight. I can not eat beans, lentils, grains, most veg except tender greens. So following this program does not work as I can not digest all that vegetable and roughage. Does anyone else have trouble digesting such large amounts of greens and beans and roughage. I don't eliminate it as fast as it goes in. So have to stick to fruit which moves through quicker and cleaner.

      Low salt diet works perfect for me. When I go no salt I become very tired, lethargic & depressed.
      U have to experiment & see what works for u!

I wonder though... why so much judgement against a system... weighing and measuring... that is literally saving lives? It's saving mine and it gives me a level of peace that I don't have when I don't. Isn't there room for it all? Why so one sided?

      cjaxen I have been in a 12 step program for about 2 years. I lost all my weight but was starving and in mourning the whole time. I was never allowed to talk because I didn't have enough days of eating correctly. i also have depression and the constant failure really took a toll on me. it felt like I was an idiot, like I was the only one who couldn't do it and that I was broken. I like Chef AJs way a lot better and I am going to start trying it out.

    It seems that all the slimming diet guru,s want people to permanently restrict their diet in some way or another.When people "break" these restrictions they feel guilty and ashamed.So sad and sometimes the beginning of eating disorders and a very distorted relationship with food and eating.

    I just don't get it. He goes in one sentence about how it's nonsense to weigh and measure foods. And in the next sentence he says how he got an intern to lose extra weight by halving the amount of avocado and nuts and raisins she was eating on her salads. THAT IS MEASURING! These contradictions really drive me crazy because I'm trying to make sense of what Dr. Lisle is saying, but the whole conversation is riddled with inconsistencies like this. Sorry. I don't mean to be a pest. But it all doesn't come together in a consistent whole.
