    This is so enlightening. I’m one of those psychotherapists who tend to try to help my clients wipe out the inner “critic” ( or at least dismiss it). I love this inner audience, observer idea. It’s a much, much more compassionate point of view. Plus - there’s some truth in what the inner audience observes. It’s not totally wrong and not totally a jerk. I’m going to shift my approach thank youuuuuu Dr and Chef.

    Dr. Lisle is iconic. As a college student, I wish I could help spread his message. Part of me wants to switch majors or seriously study evolutionary physiology! I distract myself from my physics homework watching these talks but they are so interesting!!

    I'm so grateful to you Chef AJ and to Dr. Lisle. I have been making myself all sorts of crazy trying to get in "the daily dozen" and the "g-bombs". You have freed me!!
    It makes so much sense that excesses are the problem. Keep Preaching,.please!!! I love when Dr. Lisle said, "I'll take on anybody."

    This is a keeper!! One of the best!! Chef AJ looks adorable with her Las Vegas blingy ball cap too!! And Dr. Lisle so graciously recorded this on his birthday!! Happiest B-Day blessings to you, Dr. Lisle!! What an honor for all of us & this newbie vegan!! I only know about Chef AJ & the vegan (WFPB-SOFAS-free) lifestyle from one of my best friends (who just lives this way--never, ever had a weight problem) who shared a Chef AJ link when I was struggling after gaining back 1/2 of my lost weight after a keto-diet. I am now saved from the insanity of the diet world--and Dr. Lisle's point of Diet vs. Sleep vs. Exercise is wonderful, I hadn't ever heard that before. And loved that Dr. Lisle shared about his father who didn't following the vegan way himself but promoted this lifestyle to others as a proud father---I am brand-new and also have loving family that haven't changed to veganism. I was starting to feel like I'm the only one who has non-vegan family. It makes it harder than when your support system is all vegan--but I'm still loved and am determined to never-ever go back to the SAD diet! And my vegan lifestyle is a role-model for them--they will see how good I do and hopefully, wake-up soon!! Thank-you, Chef AJ--I agree 100% with Callie-CO 2--you have connections we would never know about if you didn't create the UWL program, your books, and audio of the Pleasure Trap--you're helping all of us so much!

    Tuning into the subtle inner voice and the feeling that we have done a good job - that makes so much sense. It is a quieter voice compared to the high praise of external esteem. But we have more access and control over the self-esteem, we can get quiet, listen to it and recognise its value. Once again - Dr Lisle is a genius! Wht would we do without him? Love these interviews so much and so many thanks to Chef AJ for making it happen again and again and sharing so freely!

    Dr. Lisle said you don’t need concentrated anything but what about B12? And I’m also curious about just a tablespoon of flax seeds for omega 3?

    That’s the worst thing about having a baby - never finishing a sleep cycle and ending up completely insane from sleep deprivation.

    Thank you so much for all this information, but I do everything right (eat a high nutrient vegan diet, no wheat, no sugar, no coffee, no alcohol, do a variety of exercises outdoors every day for 1 hour) and have a serious sleep problem due to a bicycle accident 3-yrs.-ago that in addition to requiring multiple titanium implants to fix my broken body and face, I suffer from a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
    As the doctor knows, one of the symptoms of a TBI is insomnia. I get anywhere from 1 hour to 5 hours of sleep and sometimes no sleep. I am an avid meditator to help my brain shut down during the day and before I go to bed. I've tried so many non-pharmaceutical supplement, but still haven't found anything that consistently works.
    If the doctor has any suggestions that might help, I would love to hear about it. Thank you for any suggestions!

      Dr Greger just posted a video on nutritionfacts.org on how pistachios provide natural melatonin. If I were you, I'd definitely start munching on them every evening. I wish you the best! :)

      JoJo W Find out how to turn off all the blue light on your screens like phones a few hours before you go to sleep. Wifi can effect sleep and just other electronic frequencies in general. Also certain crystals if you wear them can help your mood and sleep. Exercise during the day can make you more tired.

      I do not and never have watched TV. I grew up in the wilderness of Canada and never had TV. I use my computer that has no wifi before 4 in the afternoon, do not and never have had a cell phone, have Himalayan Lamps throughout my house, turn off all electronics and have healing crystal necklace and bracelets. I've done so much research and have incorporated every imaginable technique to get my brain to sleep and regain my health. I thank you so much for taking the time to provide so much information. I wish I had learned all this before my brain injury because it would have been so much easier. I even drink catnip tea, take Montmorensy concentrated tart cherry juice, take a special form of magnesium and other things that my brain can't list.

    I'm not concerned about any "deficiencies" from avoiding healthy fats. However, I, like some others, find fats in small amounts to be satiating and believe that they prevent me from overeating. What are your thoughts on that?

      It depends on your weight loss goals and your health status. If you can handle them without overeating, that should work for you.

    Chef AJ, is there any way you could get perhaps Alan Goldhamer to answer a question about bloating beyond just eat plants SOS free?
    When McDougall was asked about it he only spoke about beans. I wish my bloating was only due to beans.
    I was always skinny no matter what I ate but I always bloat in my belly from literally anything I eat, whether before going vegan, after going vegan 5 years ago and after ditching processed food 3 years ago. After *any* meal I eat, my waist and belly inflate by 4 cm circumference each, is that just normal inflation of the belly after food? I didn't see it in other people.
    This does not go down until I have 8 hours of sleep, after which I deflate until I eat something again. I've tried eating smaller meals, and that can reduce the initial first meal bloat, but eventually after enough meals which eventually I have to eat or else I'm hungry I get to the full 4 cm bloat relative to the base state after full sleep.
    I still eat vegan junk food sometimes, for about a week every several months but other than that I'm SOS free, often for 3-4 months on end without any deviation. Being vegan without processed food seems to make the base state of my belly to be flat after a full 8 hours sleep, if I completely abstain from processed food for several months. Processed food makes things a lot worse very quickly, so it's definitely much better when I avoid it.
    Unfortunately every time I go off the wagon, even for the few days that I do, it takes weeks, sometimes months of being back to SOS free to reverse the worsening of my bloating. I don't have any other digestion issues or discomfort as long as I avoid processed food, so I don't think I have IBS. I have no idea what it is but it's just a cosmetic issue so I try my best to accept it but it still bothers me. I saw Pamela Popper's video about the importance of getting rid of belly fat for health regardless of BMI (as I said, I was always skinny no matter what I ate) but I don't know if what I have is visceral fat or not, whether it really is just cosmetic or something I need to worry about my health.
    It's really frustrating that other people tell me I'm being too fanatic and extreme trying to be 100% SOS free and they tell me I should treat myself every now and then yet I know from repeated experience my body reacts so extremely to even small amounts of processed food. When I eat processed, I gain a kilogram a day. Obviously it can't be fat, but it still takes me at least a week of eating unprocessed to lose every kilogram. I don't mind gaining the kilograms themselves, just the increased bloating that comes with it.
    It's also frustrating that I feel I am so close to doing things perfect and that's still not enough for me to get the results I want, while other people seem to be able to eat junk every once in a while and not have it backfire on weeks and months of nutritional perfection. I'm happy with how I look when I maintain several months completely SOS free when waking up after full sleep, but even then I still have major post meal bloating.
    Is there anything else I am not doing right that I could do to get rid of this post meal bloat?
    Or am I making an elephant out of a mouse and 4 cm added circumference to belly and waist is normal after a meal?

      @@CHEFAJ I just got off a consult with Douglas Lisle and he was amazingly helpful and answered all the questions I had that weren't answered in his lectures and told me to talk to Klaper about GI issues I'm probably having. Glad to finally have new options to try. :)

    About nut - isn’t fat necessary for absorbing the fat soluble vitamins (E, A, K, D), and aren’t nuts the healthiest choice of fat as they’re whole foods?

      You get fat in everything you eat! Oats are nearly 20% of their calories from fat.

      Osnat Shaibe Once again, the real problem is excess, not deficiency. There are naturally occurring fats in every plant food, even lettuce, potatoes, kale, etc. We don't need to go out of our way to eat highly concentrated fats (like in nuts), especially for someone trying to lose body fat.

      CHEF AJ thank you for your reply and for all you do to promote health. What about someone who can’t eat grains nor legumes due to allergies and bad digestion. Can you get enough fat from the vegetables and fruits?

      Sleep restriction is also how insomnia is treated clinically

    Excellent. Dr. Lisle might want to find a different analogy than a restaurant (brain cleaning at night). Restaurants are constantly being cleaned (dishes washed, tables cleared and washed, unused food put away, etc.) during business hours. A night crew doesn't come in and clean up the mess that the open hours created. Maybe an office environment is a better example. :) Thank You.
