    Dr. Rick Dina, D.C. became interested in nutrition in 1986 and has been studying and practicing raw plant-based nutrition since 1987. He worked at Hippocrates Health Institute and for the Juiceman before entering Life Chiropractic College in 1993. After graduating in 1997, he practiced at True North Health Center from 1997 until 2001, helping patients recover from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and other nutritionally related health challenges with fasting and whole food plant based nutrition. After teaching at Bastyr University, Rick maintained a private chiropractic and nutrition practice from 2003 until 2008 in San Rafael, CA, with his wife Dr. Karin Dina, D.C.

    Thank you for this interview! He answered a LOT of questions I’ve had about a raw diet which I’ve mostly (90%) followed for the last 2.5 years. When I’m strictly raw I feel incredible, require less sleep, extremely clear cognitively and the best part is just how happy I feel regardless of anything thrown my way. I realize raw is not for everyone, just sharing my own experience. I saw a couple comments about bodybuilding and prior to eating 90% raw wfpb, I was a bodybuilder for the NPC federation. I ate a high animal protein diet, meticulously weighed every macro, and was carb deprived for years. I did not eat fruit for 5 years!! Since going wfpb, my muscles did not fall off. In fact, my recovery time and energy for training improved dramatically. I’m 44 yrs old and run 7+ miles most days, practice an hour of yoga 5-6 days/week, and weight train 4 times/week. Lastly, I wanted to point out that the popular raw food TH-cam ppl who developed adverse health conditions did so bec they did not consume a variety of foods. I appreciate how both Dr. Rick and Chef AJ stress the key is to finding what works best for each person.

    I like Dr Dina. He's not afraid to be gentle and kind. There's great strength and wisdom in that. He's awakened, and he knows the special power of raw, undamaged, undenatured foods. The reason the snake started preferring the cooked food is because of its addicting properties. No one is immune to the addicting properties of cooked food and processed foods; look at our pet dogs and cats, and the deteriorating health they most often experience.

    Thank you so much for this. I've unintentionally gotten into the raw food practice because (for example) I'd eat a cooked sweet potato and feel terrible: bloated, puffy-eyed, and just generally unwell. Eaten raw, a sweet potato had no such effect. A little research revealed that raw sweet potato is much lower in histamine than cooked. Likewise a few other cooked foods I was eating on a regular basis. An "Aha!" moment for me. Further research reveals sprouted peas to be high in DAO, which can help with histamine problems, and now I'm sprouting all kinds of things. I don't have the digestive problems I was having when just about everything I ate was cooked. I kept thinking that as a whole foods vegan of 13 years I should feel great: why don't I? And I'm so appreciative of the discussion of the fringe raw folks. This was invaluable, and I'd love to see more like this please.

    I feel awsome on raw foods. I found it difficult to get satisfied. I still eat large amounts of raw vegan foods but I also incorporate cooked potatoes and sweet potatoes
    and sweet potatoes..th

    For me, compared to starch solution which I followed for a couple of years (MWL) the raw diet is HEAD AND Shoulders superior to cooked. IT gave me my life back, ended food addiction. (If you beleive cooked food is not addictive, try giving up your cooked grains and sweet potatotes!) and am happy and healthier. Yes, it costs more, is more time consuming to source and store food, and social eating requires a whole level of skill and diplomacy. But what price health?

      Agreed! Made the exact same experience. Raw plant-based is a completely different level. Just like anyone who follows it says: You feel like you're healthy on the cooked wholefood plant-based diet... but only when you switch to raw, you realize what real health really feels like.

    Loved this interview! I found it really helped round out my knowledge of this lifestyle. I’m about 90% raw vegan (low fat) already, but love discussions on nuances with that framework. Will definitely check out more of Dr. Dina’s work!

    This is an absolute GEM of an interview. Chef AJ did ask the FAQs that raw-fooders receive and seems genuinely interested. Dr Rick represented the lifestyle and community admirably; and I thank him in particular for addressing the wild fringe of the movement, which to be fair, all movements have. Also a sensitive discussion of eating disorders. Absolutely excellent all round. The most open and fair discussion of cooked and raw diets I have listened to in 2 decades. Really well done.

    I find my raw food diet much cheaper than my old diet. I grow what I can, sprout and buy local and what's on sale. If you are trying to make the fancy raw mock meals it gets pricey, if not this is a cheap way to eat.

    Important: if I don’t get enough NUTRIENTS I’m starving!! Grocery store produce is kinda meh. My solution was to grow my own microgreens and sprouts and it helps a TON!!!

    Agree on chopping up the greens small, it makes it much easier to consume more and more! I tend to shred a lot of veggies to put in my salads as well.

    There is an all vegan all starch population out there right now and it is most of Africa. The Hurmza tribe are all organic raw food eating.

    Tony Wright, has written some very interesting books about the history of fruit eating and how humans evolved thru fruit eating. He has some talks on you tube that people should really check out: Return The Brain To Eden etc.

    Thank you for the interview! Always enjoy them, even if they i don't agree with them. His diet is way extreme- I know I would not be successful eating raw- would like more diversity and as its just too much food to eat! Also, would love to know how much he spends weekly, as my beans, rice and grains make up a good portion of my diet and they are cheap!

      Sounds like the meat eaters, I could never give up my cheese etc. which I’ve heard too many times. try it in the summer when veggies are in season just to see, not as pricey when in season

    Nuts are the best. Ya want elasticity in your skin instead of wrinkle lines? Then eat a handful of nuts everyday. Thank goodness i found out because I was getting so dry. Even in my throat, just swallowing is moister and easier for me now.

      Even though nuts are a healthful food, they are very easy to overeat and can slow or stop weight loss for many people.

      @@CHEFAJ yes, but thats why when you eat nuts its done as part of a meal. It becomes the routine, it's not allowed to stand out and be the center of attention. Salads taste better with ground nuts in them . An almond is only 7 calories, a walnut halve is 14. I am as skinny as you AJ, today I weigh 112lbs and nuts have saved me from walking into the walls for a craving I could never put my finger on. Anyway, everybody has a food they feel they must stay away from, mine are baked goods. So, ok Aj, if you can't eat just a handful and feel free from it bugging you then thats fine because cake is my hang-up and whenever I see one, it has my name on it.

    Hi I’m in Florida, i have cut out nuts altogether as I’m at 160 lbs, I’m 39 and want to get to 130 at least, how many pounds of non start hyperventilating and how many pounds of starch do i need to loose weight at a rate to keep it off (I’m on no medication and no health problems), thanks chef AJ X

      You can search for her what I eat in a day videos. In one from 2 years ago, she said she eats 3-4 pounds of non-starchy vegetables (one pound of which is raw salad), 3 pounds of starch, and 1 pound of fruit, per day. I'm sure it varies, depending on factors, but basically she's around those ratios. I find it hard to eat all that, but I do similar ratios. I'm in Orlando. 👋

      NO I was very heavy bthen because I ate nuts because I couldn't feel satiated without starch

      I have a5 yr old that went vegan a year and a half ago. He naturally would rather eat fruit and some veggies but was mortified after seeing a rotisserie of chickens. He has had one cold since then, that's all. Full of energy and life and he's very healthy.

    Chef AJ...you say you don't eat bean and legumes so this mean you don't eat your "red lentil chili' recipe for the Instant Pot? Aren't lentils considered legumes?

      There are a few folks, u just have to look. Definitely a few ultra marathon runners who are raw vegan. There is a famous black guy who is cooked vegan. All of it is totally possible. In fact recovery time is so much greater.

    You guys took Dr McDougals comment out of context and made him sound crazy. If I was not familiar with Dr M., I would not look him up based on this show! I know he is your mentor but this discussion was bad.

    Please stop saying nutritional advice is no substitute for medical advice. By a ridiculous law, this disclaimer has to be included in printed literature so it's sad when this is made in conversations where it's not legally required. This is obviously irrational since the medical establishment is responsible for the historic and still ongoing persecution and prosecution of those who emphasize the intimate connection between health and food. In 1947 it was naively predicted by many observers that the founding of the NHS-an institution based on drugs which by law must be nonnatural and therefore unrecognised by the body-would lead to less disease in the UK. It was no surprise to those at the time with authentic health knowledge that disease and morbidity began to rise steeply. The NHS is a capitalist venture based on the theft and ownership of the language of health, attached to a preposterously disingenuous and erroneous biomedical philosophy of health and illness. Having Dr as a title can therefore be read as a warning that whatever helpful information is shared will inevitably be flawed at many points.
