    I just wanted to thank Adrian for taking the time to film and explain all that he did. The people that have these skills are getting harder and harder to find these days and there's going to be a time where you won't find them. So for him to film this really is great and will probably save someone's ass in the future. Also great job on the editing too Stu,it's a winner all around.

    Adrian, basically a born teacher. Excellent explanations of what he is doing, why, in what order, things to consider, and how to tell if it's not done correctly.
    Thank you, Stu, for asking him to video his work.

    The one thing that I find amazing after watching the last 3 videos is how well this engine runs without any electronics involved. I mean it's all mechanical, no sensors or micro computer orchestrating any aspect of its operation. I'm sure the modern versions that employ more computing power than NASA may have better power, fuel efficiency and lower emissions, but nothing new has the soul that you can hear in this machine.
    Thanks for sharing

    Watched this on Boxing Day , it popped up while I was rewatching a few older videos from January and February when Stu bought the boat and lifted it in the marina planning to spend a couple of days tinkering with it, then refloating it and moving it to the hard "for a few weeks".
    It has been a long "few weeks", and a hell of an entertaining, informative education. I have been a subscriber for a few years even though I don't own a boat and I'm not a mechanic.
    Many thanks to Stu for making and sharing of this channel. Thanks also to Adrian and everyone else providing additional content, the numerous businesses and friends that make up the 'supporting cast' have been an intergral part of the story so far.
    Now the engine rebuild is drawing to a close the refit and shakedown can begin, then hopefully onto the fun. 2019 has been a hell of a year and 2020 looks like being just as good.
    Great job, great videos, *Raises a bottle of Coopers to Stu

    I just cringe at the thought of using the blower the way it was before Adrian set eyes on it. Making videos isn't his thing, but we got there and the proof we have already seen, A good Detroit mechanic is getting harder to find as they are a dying breed. This video really is testament to attention to detail. He really is worth twice what he charges.

    I've seen a Detroit run away and you're right, they're not fun to stop. But it's amazing how fast a shop towel thrown into an open turbo can shut one down but then you get to clean shredded shop towel out of the engine.

    • @richardbohlingsr3490
      @richardbohlingsr3490 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You really only have two choices to stop one running away: Shut off air or shut off fuel.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And depending on the situation, shutting off the fuel isn't always possible.

    • @richardbohlingsr3490
      @richardbohlingsr3490 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DangarMarine If it was my boat, I would install a ball valve in the fuel line as close as I could to the injector pump, ideally on the output side to kill fuel to the engine. With the air intake you don't have a good way to close off the air to the engine, without removing piping next to the engine so that is not a good possibility. Talk it over with Adrian and he can advise you. Happy sailing.

    Great to see Adrian is a professional and has respect for the engineers who designed the thing. He seems the kinda guy that uses a torque wrench on wheel bolts. Too many mechanics think they know better than the people who built it, and don't respect special tools or torque settings or stuff like that. So hats off to Adrian for sticking to the book and taking the time to follow procedures and do things right!

  • @paulg9314
    @paulg9314 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Adrian is a legend, and I like the way he explains things. I hadn't thought about anti-seize inside an engine. Every bolt, screw or nut that comes off my bikes gets a generous coating of copper slip before going back on, except near the brakes. Adrian reckons anti-seize does more harm than good inside the engine oil is enough. Fair enough. We live and learn.

    • @richardcranium5839
      @richardcranium5839 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      if it holds an external housing and it is not a threaded thru hole theres no harm no foul. detroits used a lot of thru holes because back in the dy it was easier and fastr to machine. thus why a copper washer under 90% of the bolts.

    • @paulg9314
      @paulg9314 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@richardcranium5839 Good points Richard. I saw that Adrian also found excess dried Silastic (silicon) applied by well-intentioned mechanics around thru holes. The silicon had blocked galleries and really gummed things up. Same thought process as for anti-seize. I'll still use copper slip on my motorbikes, but only on exhausts and external fittings where there's no chance of the copper grease getting inside the internal lubrication system. Lesson learned.

    Man thank you so much 4 this video you helped me w my fuel pump you are a real mechanic. A true real mechanic tears parts down and rebuilds them and thats exactly what you done you are not a parts changer i love your accent...im from South Carolina in the us. I have a 60 series detroit 12.7 liter and the fuel pump wasnt working it didn't have no suction nor output of fuel and your the only person that has any vids on rebuilding a pump so i removed my fuel pump and i soaked it in vinegar for 4 days then i watched your video and took the fuel pump apart i cleaned all the parts w either then checked all the parts bearings gears and shaft seals and everything checked all i found a chunk of trash in pump it was dirty and relief valve has junk in it so i cleaned it all up and oiled it up w some 15w40 motor oil and put it all back together and torque the eight 6 point bolts and reinstalled back on truck checked for fuel pressure while turning over engine and yes it had pressure tightened up both fuel lines filled up both fuel filters w fresh fuel and changed w new filters then tried 2 crank engine up and she started right up. Thank you. You saved me 300 bucks on a new pump thank you and God Bless you plz keep up the awesome videos

    wow a white road comode. havent seen one of them in a long time. i used gaskets on everything back in the day. the fuel pump one was a super thin clear material and you'd stack them to get just the right clearance. i remember cutting strips of news print and using them to check the blower rotor clearance. you'd run the strips through the blower one then two strips then three till it cut the paper. kept cigarette paper in the toolbox for setting up rear end gears. lots of tricks to make life easier. that is a newer engine. the older ones had straight rotors and spur gears. there was no clearance adjustment. they also had a very distinct whine when running.

    You're a good teacher Adrian. You don't just say do it like this. You also point out why it is built that way, how it works in concert with the engine, potential mistakes I could make, and I could go on. Thoroughly enjoyable video. You also gave me an idea for a video. Mechanic horror stories. Stories with a lesson on what NOT to do. Anyway, good job on the video.

    Hey Stu a belated Merry Christmas to you and yours.
    There are some things on the Detroit's that are a bit finicky to set up, but the amount of abuse I have seen Detroit diesels survive tells me the finicky bits of setup are well worth dealing with for longevity.
    Watching Adrian do the rebuild work was enjoyable, because I watch the older gentleman do the same thing gee it's got to be almost 50 years ago now. Back when Detroit's were the majority of the working boats engines.

      My Christmas! I agree that a bit of effort now will result in many years of reliable service down the track.

      @@DangarMarine I know the 6-71 in Frontier had over 24,000 hours when she had a engine room fire and sank in Southeast Alaska. All Dad could do is sit on the beach and watch her burn. That is the nature of fiberglass boats.

      Our society is going down the drain, just the other day I was going through a parking lot minding my own business and I had some lady from the other direction cut me off,block the lane on purpose for no reason and she thought it was funny. She then jumps out with her car parked in the lane of travel saying some BS about me being in a big hurry. I wanted to beat her ass along with the other people she was holding up. But she was in her 50's a woman and my 74 year old mother was waiting outside in the 20 degree cold. But for the life of me I can't figure out what caused her to go off like that. I wasn't speeding and was slowing down for the speed bump when she pulled her stunt. What's weirder is she was your mom descript middle aged middle class Camry driving liberal.

      i'm pretty sure it's mostly just people using it as a way to tell youtube not to recommend similar videos to them. I don't even know if it works that way or not, but that's probably why

    Fantastic video. Someone who knows what he's doing and real old school stuff. Engine should run forever except for one thing - the scoring inside the supercharger housing was scary. What's wrong with a decent air filter? One bit of grit, a stripped tooth on the drive and Armageddon. Loved the reference to white snot. Highly addictive stuff. Have a great New Year!
