  • In this video Adrian and I finish the final assembly of the Detroit Diesel 4-71 and then Adrian adjusts up the injector heights and valve lash and then hopefully doesn't get it to fire up first time.

I’m still amazed by Adriens knowledge on Detroits. He’s simply amazing. Just goes to prove that the best mechanics don’t always show up in clean uniforms and driving a fancy truck with graphics all over them. He’s a down to earth guy that knows his stuff.

That's because he's a mechanic not a technician. Those blokes have no idea what to do unless a computer tells them. It could be on fire and if it's not throwing a code they will say it's fine.

Agreed I have a Gardner diesel in my boat and there are less and less people who know all the little tips and tricks t working on them but there is an Irish guy who puts up short but informative videos, everything from what size spanners you need to how to test the fuel system to noting that many of the nuts are numbered so put them back where they came from! Stuff that will be forgotten if it's not saved somewhere.

Stu, your a lucky man to have Adrien as a mate. Besides being an incredible mechanic he is also a great teacher ! He explains things very well and also gives you the why answers as well. The Detroit sounds really good, can hardly wait to see it back in Rinko and running well !!! Thanks Stu for this video, being a gear head my self, I really enjoyed this video !!!

Big smile on my face. Adrian is an absolute master mechanic. If I were you Stu and had some extra time I would go work for free now and then just to gain knowledge from him. Adrian would be a smash hit with his own U Tube channel. He has a pleasant personality patient and informative. The Detroit sounds very happy. This was a great video. Stu you did we’ll bringing the engine to him. That’s not taking away from your own knowledge and mechanical abilities Stu your very good also. Best wishes and respects sent. 👍👏

Adrian, you are clearly a wizard on diesel engines!! The way you fixed all the issues as they came up was great!! Thanks for the Info!! I once owned a GMC bus with a 8v71 in it. Great engine never had any issues with it, water pump -yes, radiator-yes, plugged fuel lines-yes - the engine was strong until I sold it. :)

GREAT video, thank you Adrian! I worked at Chrysler in the Detroit area for 30+ years and am pretty good with diesels, but the Detroit 4-71 videos you guys have done have been a great education. Detroit 2-strokes have always been a bit of a mystery, but they are everywhere. Your video gives your viewers an excellent understanding of how these work.

What a great down to earth guy Adrian is. He certainly knows his engines and the sound of that Detroit running was so different to the noise it made when it was first fitted into Renko was very different. You have been very fortunate to know him and have him do the work on this unit. Be good to see him on a you tube channel just as he is. Be interesting to see how Renko goes once this is reinstalled back in. Did I miss the prop being welded on? New shaft and inner bearings once the Detroit is run in?

Adrian is a rare find, and I am in a similar industry and seen lots who are not the real deal, he is! I have the following suggestions: Take him and his wife fishing and diving on a vacation day! Get him to look over your installation as you get done. Pay him to do final adjustments on your boat after the break in period. Ask him to make a special tool kit you can stow, and spares kit, for anything he (or anyone) might be able to do on the water in the way of maintenance or repair (like those fuel injector lines that crack, that line wrench, the tools you need to adjust everything like feelers gauge etc... Any special wrenches you might need to get into a tight spot, etc ). This way, if you ever need help somewhere, you could even possible be talked thru a problem on the phone if you are stuck somewhere...
    Great video series! Thanks!

Thanks mate, glad you liked the vid. Adrian and his step son came on our previous fishing trip (th-cam.com/video/n7vxiTHwVx8/w-d-xo.html) and will hopefully come on more when he has time. Already have the full Detroit tune-up tool kit onboard and plenty of obvious spares to tackle problems at sea!

Sounds a lor crisper, I recall the first time it started after the first rebuild it was quite sick sounding and a lot of black smoke. Zero smoke and good throttle response. Boat is definitely going to run better, first thing I thought of was a good prop upgrade for some more top end.
