    Wow I hadn't heard that sound for 40 years. When you got it dialed in better it almost brought tear to my eye. I spent many hours around this type motor in the US Coast Guard operating small boats for search and rescue in the 70's. Beautiful music to my soul. We had twins and on the reruns back to base I would lay on the engine housing and sleep like a baby. Thanks mate you made a yanks day with this vid.

    From the comfort of my easy chair, it started as a simple search for a bit of info on the Roots type blower. Although In my 8th & 1/2 decade of life, mechanical things still draw my interest. One of the links took me to Dangar Marine here on YT. Little did I know I would be taken on a journey that would be so enlightening, educational, and entertaining, that I would watch several hours of something I previously not given a moments thought, I will never do, or even need to know.
    The 'actors', the critters about the work environment, the unpretentious sharing of knowledge gained over years of experience. Camera work, and editing too. I want to especially mention not having to mute the sound if a kid or other sensitive ears entered the room. Thanks for that. The lack of 'adult' language in gearhead videos seems to be a rarity. I can't express how much I enjoyed every minute of the 4-71 rebuild. When she fired up, I shared your joy. Thank you. Wishing you both continued success.

    You mentioned not doing much editing for a more like being there kind of natural-feeling video, and you definitely accomplished that with me. With the addition of smell-a-vision (substitute a drop or two of WD-40 and/or your favorite reducer/thinner and you'd take me back in time 50 years or so, when I was taught automotive skills by people like Adrian--who I now regard as a diesel-tuning savant). Adrian with-out-a-doubt has his tune-up sh*t together, big time. That engine sounded oh, so sweet when he finished dialing it in, and without it belching even a tiny bit of smoke, too. (Finding a worthy prop might be a problem, though.)
    What a treat it was to hear his informative, matter of fact explanations. Brilliant!

    I had the same problem with that stripped bolt on your engine. I think it got stripped because someone put too long a bolt in that hole and it bottomed out and the threads were aluminum to start with. I noted the problem before i put the head on the engine. I catually tapped the hole with a 1/2-20 then inserted a home made insert which was about 3/8 long with 1/2 20 threads on the outside and the threads of the bolt on the inside. so locktite the thread in the aluminum end plate and make sure that you don't put too long a bolt in. I love my little detroit diesel. I find it a marvel and a wonderfull work of engineering. My engine was made in 1938 and parts for it are everywhere, and mechanics love to talk about those GM 71 series two strokes.

    That engine looks bloody beautiful. I'm an EV man, through and through, and I deeply dislike diesel, as a fuel (I've tasted it in a previous life as a mechanic *shudder*), and an ICE particulate creation system, but yours looks smart & as clean as can be, after the valve & injector tune-up - how valuable is an experienced & specialist engine mechanic!?

    I sure hope all those mistakes you found get addressed somehow; as a mechanic it sickens me to see blower no good: pivot-pin holders backwards: wrong screws: improper bolts: bolt-holes with debris inside........I honestly hope that you are Not on the hook for all the remedial work you had to do.
    Also: "rear-endoscope" gets Top Marks! (never heard that one before.....) Good luck mate.

      I was thinking the same thing. Seems like the engine machine shop builder sure screwed up a bunch of things.

    • @jet-black
      @jet-black 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I’m guessing the machine shop didn’t have much to do with the top end. And some of those things might have been done by old trawler mechanics whose main concern was zero downtime and quick turnaround. After ~40 years of commercial service this old Detroit would’ve seen some dodgy mechanics in its day.
      Awesome that Stu has a local expert like Adrian who can spot things like that and the blower issues with ease!

      @@mikemullay5622 - I was thinking the same thing and; hoping it was _"old trawler mechanics",_ instead. Though really, there's ever fewer seasoned experts like Adrian and (is it Jim, from Oregon?) for Stu and Scott, to pick up these finer points for these period, Detroit Diesels. This day and age of _quantity over quality;_ I'm not sure that we can expect much more, from the modern machine shops, regardless of the cost. Cheers-
