  • In this video I go an visit Adrian at his yard and go through a water pump and oil pump rebuild. He then comes onboard Renko to look at a problem I am having with excess oil. To solve this we suck some oil out of the sump.
If you have a Detroit Diesel and would like Adrian to look at it his Business is 892 Trucking.

I was thinking much the same thing. Fellas that go above and beyond and whilst they might look a bit rough around the edges, they see you know nothing, but are wanting to learn and they do their best by you and then don't charge you an arm and a leg. I worry about what's going to happen to the industry when these guys (and presumably girls) move on and we're left with the new blood.

Larger like the EMD 645 series 20 cylinder, Alcos, Caterpillars, Delaval, and finally huge monstrosity like the Sulzer and many others. I worked at Greyhound 45yrs ago and they were all Detroit powered. 6V and 8V 71s..They ran the Silver Eagles, Brisbane to Melbourne non stop..Never had a breakdown, because they were maintained. Governed to 1950 rpm they would go well past 1.5 million miles..We always had an rebuilt engine ready to roll..All run and tested..It was usually just the blower worn out, made them down on power..

I know with all 4 stroke industrial diesels you must use break in oil now or they will be oil burners. For whatever reason the removal of zinc in oil now not only wipes out flat tappets but prevents ring seating. At the company i work for now we do 4 hour, balls to the wall, bollard pull, break ins. Or 4 hr dynos or 4hr load banks....full load. Before using break in oil and long duration bresk ins...there was a multitude of redo work for oil consumption.

Too much oil can cause all sorts of problems. I remember one time I was at work and a lady had her oil cahanged at Walmart. Our shop was 10 miles down the road. They didn't even drain the oil or change the filter. They filled it up to where it was 4 inches over full. The engine was shaking, low power. I drained 3.5 gallons out of a 1.25 gallon system. Needless to say, she wasn't happy. But it's amazing what extra lubricant can cause.

I remember when I was a spareparts salesman back in the 1980's and a fresh off the boat bloke came in & wanted some engine degreaser as He had been knocked back at a rego inspection. I sold Him 4 litres of the stuff and He asked if He could use the hose out the back, I said sure, 20 minutes later he came back in & said His car wouldn't start, We went out the back & He had poured the degreaser into the motor through the filler cap in the rocker cover & then stuck the hose in it.

    Hi Stu,
Adrian is an absolute magician with the Detroits, and he is a good teacher to boot - a rare combination of virtues.
I would be making sure Adrian is routinely resupplied with slab or two of his favourite ale.
We all wish Dotty a speedy recovery. She was pecking only half-heartedly at the juicy smorgasbord you laid out for her. Something's not right.

He sure is Paul. Yes, I fear is isn't well at all. We'll see what the vet says soon. I hope you guys are all okay with the east coast low. The forcast looks like it is going to hit Coff's hard.

@@DangarMarine Yes Stu, a forecast 40kt breeze and six metre seas are enough for even the saltiest Coffs Coast fisherman to reconsider a trip out with the tinnie tomorrow. The breeze is getting up as we speak.

Looks like your hands are much better now, but sorry that Dotty isn't feeling so good! Wish her well for me please!
Good video Stu! Thank you! :-)

If you met this bloke in a bar, you wouldn’t know he was a professor in Detroit diesels for at least 30 mins. Why do they always handout Honory professorships to people who don’t have a lot of skill in things and this guy quite obviously deserves one.

I assume Adrian is going to do something about the stuck oil ring and possible water leak between the head and block. Reducing the oil capacity won't make any difference to those issues. I had a bit to do with 671's many decades ago and a stuck oil ring in a newly rebuilt motor is a bit of a worry. Love your videos and "chook reports"....

I love reading the word 'chook' I learned the term from Maggie Beers (aussie chef) and we use it all the time. We live in the US.

@@TechGorilla1987 I learnt chook from Joe Mangel on Neighbours (the Melbourne-based Aussie soap. Stu lives in the other Aussie soap location, Home & Away)

If the ring is not broken she's just just giving the false reading

I was blowing oil out my airbox and stack when I was using a 30w oil, switching to a straight 40w fixed that problem.

Thanks for another video Stu. Can I make a suggestion. In vids like this it would be awesome if you could freeze frame when he talked about the rust line etc and if you could circle what he's talking about. My non mechanical brain couldn't see anything. Keep mending that hand!

Wasn’t so obvious when I put the newer style seal on the old shaft with the impeller kit, it all seemed to fit nicely but would weep past the seal when sitting. When running it sealed up but was on our trencher so it sits most of the year.
