    Great build. I've looked at so many builds on youtube. I like this one the best for what I need and for balance. I am building 2 for my van. Almost finished.

    So you said your material is 1x…but it sure looks like 2x4…?? ….have you found the wheel well to be enough support for that span?…what thickness is your top 7/16…1/2…3/4? Thanks.

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was my mistake. The frame is 2x3, and the top is 3/4” OSB, so plenty strong enough.

    What jig do you use for the perfect drill holes, and is that clamp specially made to hold the board in place while screwing?

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was a “Kreg K5” unit. And the clamp is specially designed to fit inside the pocket holes the Kreg jig makes, also made by Kreg.

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors

    How’s that cover hold up against heavy rain? I install these a lot and always wonder if they leak after a year

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I only have small leaks at the back glass in the corners where it meets up with the tailgate. But. There’s a good 1/8” gap on each side so it’s expected. Other than those areas I’ve had no leaks.

    A single/ twin mattress is 38” wide. Two questions: 1) is 26” wide enough to sleep comfortably w/o falling off? 2) where do you buy non-standard memory foam mattresses?

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For me it’s good enough to sleep on. Yeah, I’d rather have 38”, but I didn’t want to take up that much space. I bought a 30” wide piece of medium density foam and cut it down to 26” wide using an electric carving knife👍🏻

    How did you keep it from moving? Is it attached to the pickup bed somehow?

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Friction basically. It does slide around if you apply enough force, but otherwise it stays out pretty well.

  • @Jshaw71
    @Jshaw71 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Looks like a good start, but I would make a small change, personally, with the bed frame part, I'd rather have drawers were the open spaces were, and put the lights on the upper part of the frame, but that's just me

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors

    What are the dimensions of the bed frame?

  • @bcarpiothetek
    @bcarpiothetek 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How tall is that Camper bed without the pad?

    • @bcarpiothetek
      @bcarpiothetek 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know you said dimensions are not important but I'm asking since I have a 2021 F150 short bed so I'd imagine our dimensions are more or less the same, and I also bought the Leer 180XL camper shell so I wanted an idea of how tall you made the bed because it looks like you still have quite a bit of room for camping/sleeping with the bed and shell.

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe it’s right around 7” tall. Also, I bought a 5” foam mattress, and I still have about 1” of headroom when I sit on it (I’m 6’1”). But my advice would be to get no more than a 4” medium density foam pad. 5” is a bit overkill and wish I would have gone 3 or 4” thick.

  • @d.collier_8280

    How tall did you make your platform?

    • @BrianWatersOutdoors
      @BrianWatersOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s about 7”. Just tall enough to get over the wheel well

    • @d.collier_8280
      @d.collier_8280 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess the 5.5’ bed is a little different than the 6.5’. Because when measuring mine, my wheel well is a little over 9”

    • @BigBadBLT
      @BigBadBLT ปีที่แล้ว

      There's physically no way the platform height is 7 inches. 2x3s are 2.5 inches tall when put on their side - that's 5 inches. The vertical supports look to be a solid 4.5 or 5. Plus 3/4 inch osb. Platform height can't have landed under 10 inches, more likely 12.
