Is toe scrunching exercising with a towel on the floor a good exercise?

I used to have severe hammertoe when i was grossly overweight. (300+ vs 175 ideal weight). When i lost 100 lbs, hammertoe was much less severe. I also added arch supports in my shoes, so hammertoe is totally gone.

Could you get them from wearing heels like boots 👢 for example? My SIL has hammer toes... UK.. she wears lots of boots with heels but in saying that I bought new boots and I noticed one of my toes started to curl down. These were flat boots. Terrible isn't it that some footwear can be so damaging to feet. Looking forward to receiving your reply.

My mom is 80 and has left her hammertoes untreated for years. She is in perfect health otherwise but this is starting to have more of a serious impact on her mobility and I’m afraid it’s past the point of any help. Wish I had been more proactive in getting her to seek treatment earlier.

I was born with bad hips, so severely pigeon toed that my feet turned inside-backwards. Had shoes on braces that connected them to each other, and they would tighten them more each month (these only worn at night). Didn't walk until I was 3.5 yrs old. (I'm also on the spectrum - if you couldn't tell by now. We have a tendency to walk more on our tip toes.) Anyway, I had to wear my shoes on the opposite feet until 2nd grade - to try to straighten them - as they wanted to curve in. Worked 34 years on concrete. Now, all I wear are sketchers with memory foam. I do have a mallet toe I am trying to deal with. I am wondering what works best for those? (The dip joint bends down, and I end up walking on the very tippy tip of that second toe bone. Brutal.)

@@wendelynyoung8609 thanks--you too. i wish i had more helpful things to share with you. all i can say is to exercise as much as you can...in a gym with a personal trainer if you can afford that. the younger family member with cmt does exactly that, and it greatly helps her core strength. the older family member has good strong upper body muscles from using the wheelchair for so many years, so it isn't hopeless. mostly, just protect yourself from falls. that seems to be the big bad.

Everything about the human body can be pathologised. ALL my fingers and toes curl downwards. I agree some of it may be caused by footwear. I've never worn heeled shoes in my life. I'm pleased that my feet and toes are so flexible. I regularly go for long distance walks and do physio, with no pain or problems.

oh, wow... a lifetime of pain with Hammer toes and flat feet? and I find out that something could have been done when I was younger? I've even had an operation for twisted hammer toes. • @QuickQuips

Bunion is a slow dislocation usually involving the big toe pointing to the outside. Hammer toes are about toes curling.
