Update! SO much better! I have been doing these exercises and trying to walk on my whole foot. At first the toe bending was painful. I realized how tight those structures in my feet were. My third toe hurt the most during the stretch, but my 2nd toe is the hammer toe.
Now my 2nd toe is almost completely flat, and is flexible-not rigid any more. The toe stretches feel good. Thanks so much!

Thanks Bob and Brad. 37 year old hiker with hammer toes checking in. The way my toes land caused pretty bad metatarsalgia and I've had to give up hiking and switch jobs. Nice to find these stretches and thank you for demonstrating them. Hoping they will help to straighten out the toes and avoid surgery.

Thank you so much! My dad had hammer toes and was nice enough to pass them to me. I’ve always been embarrassed for anyone to see my toes. My husband calls them monkey toes. I’m so glad that I’m not alone having hammer toes! My feet do cramp up if I do certain stretches. This is great! Thanks so much!

@@secret.ritual I've got em' too! I've studied ballet for years, hasn't stopped me, but when it comes to pointework I feel like I can't articulate my toes properly, and 'feel the floor' which are important to ballet. Strengthening exercises feel hindered... If I could have surgery to straighten them🔨🔨 & remove the bunions (both 2nd to last toes have bunions on outer top knuckles) I'd go for it! Sorry if I geeked out a lil & made this long!

The way shoes are made causes the disfigurement and needs to be changed to see the correct muscles of the foot strengthen. Many shoes have arch support, toe spring, round toes, and elevated heels. Who's feet are round? I recommend looking at brands like Altra, Topo, Xero, and Vivobarefoot. There are many more but these are my favorites. Myofascial release to the extensors in the anterior lower leg is critical. Good luck with your journey, I did mine 5 years ago after a broken foot.

My podiatrist said hammer toes are probably genetic when I told him my mom had said hers were from wearing ill fitting shoes as a child. I found balancing on the affected foot for as long as possible helpful. I’m trying to bring that second metatarsal, phalanx down to better alignment.
I also heard of standing with your toes on the edge of a step.
Also, if you are walking for exercise, don’t stop. I didn’t realize how much it was doing for me.

I’ve had this problem for a long time and I’ve only found it getting better once I made the switch to flat wide toed shoes AND forefoot walking. I think this is because the shoes give the toes the space and stretching they need to splay and the fore foot walking allows my claves to properly activate to help balance everything out. It’s not a simple switch either I’ve been doing it for a couple years now and I’m still not 100% used to it.

My doctor thought it was fungus until he realized it was just the pressure on the toe that thickened the nail

Thanks so much Bob! A chiropractor and podiatrist later, I come across physiotherapists who can actually explain what's happening to my toe. I pieced together what you said, before seeing your vid, but it's great to hear smart people echo me. Lol. I appreciate the exercise tips. I've been grabbing towels and a hacky sac. Oh. My podiatrist told me to buy Hoka runners (he sneered at my barefoot shoes). I bought a pair, tried them on, now they sit on the box. I'm thinking of returning them, because the toe flips up.

Love every video and many of them have helped me to stay knowledgable and pain free. I have been having some serratus issues for the last few months and feel that it is time to see a doctor. Can you guys do some serratus (general information) videos?

Guys!! Are you aware of hyper mobile Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome? If you aren’t, please do some research because we who have it are desperate for help! I’m double jointed, even in my toes, but I’m going to give these stretches a go. Thanks for the great advice and humour! That makes it especially enticing to watch your videos! 😅

I’ve had surgery on two hammertoes. Those toes are shorter now and I have some pretty funny looking toes. I was walking and stubbed my hammertoe and it dislocated the bone below it. I have other hammer toes and I will try these stretches! By the way , don’t wear flip flops they cause your toes to grip the flip flops as you walk. Or walking downhill., you grip with your toes. Learned this from my podiatrist.

All my toes are hammer curled and get really bad foot pain underneath as my toes don’t touch the ground when walking. Will try these thanks. Hopefully it fixes my lower back / knee pain as well. 🤦🏼‍♂️. Anyone else have hammer toes and lower back pain ? Brutal

Good advice I am one who had tendon rerouting surgery (tendon disconnect last knuckle wrap around second knuckle and shave little bit off that knuckle to have little up flexion) felt it would be best option as can not afford further injuries maybe could try lifting big toe holding down other 4toe then lift 4toes holding down big toe try athleanx calf exercises check 3rehab? Take towel lay on floor fix part of towel between toes (like toe spacers) and squeeze holding muscle contracted off and on

Barefoot shoes are the next best thing to wearing no shoes at all. Just the way nature designed you.

Bob, have your toes improved now that it is 2 years ago? I’m just seeing this video. And the one toe does rub up on the top of my shoe. I didn’t realize this was really related to plantar fasciitis too. Thx for all the great info. ❤

I was pleasantly surprised to see this video since I have hammer toes. A little hard for me to do my left foot, since I have not only had knee replacement but also my left ankle had triple compound fractures so was put back together with a plate and 13 screws. Will have to figure out how to get some stretching done in spite of the metal. Any suggestions?

arielmel0518 I wonder if you could use a towel and pull your toes and feet. I would start gently, as in Yoga. After time the stretch increases as the muscles and tendons loosen up. I hope this helps.

My podiatrist just told me I have hammertoes. Some years ago I quit wearing flip-flops because it felt like my toes had to scrunch into the sole to keep them on and switched to sandals that are strapped on. But does going barefoot help in the house help, especially with standing on tip toes every once in a while? Thank you!

    • @shorelined1
      @shorelined1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes, going barefoot, walking on toes, toe or calf raises, stretches every direction...everything that restores foot mobility and strength all help considerably.
