Overpriced : ABS keycaps, lacking backplate ( non full metallic) with cheapy plastics . It's 60$ more than it should be.
A wired one at 130? Come on dude I can purchase Hyperx 60% at 90 , why pay 130 for a wired Blackwidow mini?
In the same way I'd pay for a wireless viper mini at the price of the riidiculous Orochi 2. With a USB-C port though. Not a micro-usb as in
      the overpriced Logitech Superlight.

I’m currently studying economics in college and in my classes we often talk about how consumer satisfaction is often more a product of utility rather than a product of a price point. Meaning that a consumer will often be willing to pay more for a product if he/she truly values and appreciates the item they are buying. This obviously correlates to pc gaming, and I personally do not think that Razer products are overpriced. If someone is in the market for gaming equipment, Razer is a solid option at any budget point. If a consumer is unhappy with Razer’s pricing model, there are countless other alternatives to choose from. That being said I would love to have my own BlackWidow V3 Mini. Love you Techne!!!!!

I love how before you dive in you break it down for all the toxic Internet people. “Your not big behind you’re tiny keyboard”. I love this quote and you are 100 percent right. I’m not sure why so many people waist their time posting negative comments on the internet and feel the need to bring people down. The internet is an amazing way for people to connect, learn about new hobbies or interests, check out new tech or even learn how to play a musical instrument yet some people chose to use the internet as a way to try and bring people down instead of lift them up. What a great intro and you are spot on! Another great video as well. I always think about the G Pro Superlight and wonder why so few people talk about it being overpriced while I have seen many people say the Roccat Kone Pro Air is overpriced. The Roccat Kone Pro Air is my personal favorite mouse I have ever used and it has Bluetooth, fast charging, USB-C, better stock mouse skates, and excellent build quality. To me the mouse is 100% worth it although if someone loves the weight and shape of the G Pro that mouse may be worth more to them. I think everyone has their own value system based on their own personal preference and use that when deciding on a product’s value rather than a non subjective look at a product. So many people complain about ABS keycaps but GMK Keycaps are usually $150 or more and those are ABS. If someone wants an easily accessible awesome out of the box experience 65% keyboard with wireless functionality than I’d say the new Razer Keyboard is perfect for that and seems to be priced fairly.

a lot of solid points were pointed out by techne. I think the initial reaction of it being OVERPRICED is understandable until the consumer actually finds out all the features. I mean the build quality is another thing but that comes after you actually try the product. Then you can decide based on your PERSONAL preference. Closest way to actually justify the price would be comparing it to other keyboards in the same category but again, they are all similar but not the same.

I think that the problem with comparing a prebuild keyboard with a custom is that the custom keyboard is that custom keyboards have a lot of hidden costs like the lube for the switches and stabs, the tools to open the switches, the foam and much more and not only that but you also have to spend a lot of time doing all of that so you can have a very good keyboard

And if I were to justify my reasoning for that, it would probably be because I haven't spent that amount of money on any of my peripherals ever. As a long time razer user, since the birth of the original deathadder they have come a long way. I've used the original blackwidow, then their new version with their switches (always liked the oranges more than the rest) and their huntsman lineup in recent times. Razer back in the days use to be the "all hype" brand and nothing much to show for it. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean I'm bashing on their deathadder lineup. That mouse on its own was amazing and still is till this day. I am gpro user now, but I still recommend the deathadder to a lot of people even though I switched off it. With this new razer keyboard, in all honesty coming from where razer was, to now it makes complete since to me that the board does cost the way it does.
As you stated with the doubleshot ABS keycaps, they truly do feel a lot better in comparison to their older boards that have offered standard ABS along with other brands that do. Honestly this is a big up for razer, but I can get behind why people do feel the way they do about the price. But in the long term... as much as people wanna bash on razer because they're stuck in the mindset of them being a "hype brand" still, in comparison to other boards this one does seem more solid and better than the huntsman lineup and older version of the blackwidow.
This is just my 2 sense though. I personally have no need to spend the money to try it, I would want too yes, but I can't as of right now. Overall I'm excited that razer is making these big changes to their lineups. They truly have come a long ways.

hey techne, thanks a lot for the explanation, it's a lot more clear now, i guess in the original video review you didn't go into details why you thought it was a good deal, also all the other reviewers are saying its overpriced, so I guess that's where people are coming from, also if they make a wired version, why not just make a huntsman 65 instead, with wired you can go for optical switches vs. the blackwidow mechanicals

I appreciate your effort to make sense of this topic, keyboard and peripheral pricing can be really tough to compare like to like (i.e. is the V3 Mini worth the same as the Drop Alt, etc). So much of it boils down to "does this board have the features i want or is there another with more for less?" I think it's sticker shock, that makes people say it's "Overpriced". Would it be worth it at 175? 170? 165? Maybe razer should have posted a full aluminum version for 225 then this one to prime peoples expectations. Anyway, ramble over. Thanks for the hard work!

  • @QibFit

Extremely on point. Considering that the ROG Falchion is the only competition in the low-latency wireless keyboard competition, $180 is quite justifiable, especially since I can utilize the multi-device feature with my Orochi v2 and bluetooth on my iPad.

  • @AnearPlayz

I would say the keyboard is expensive. Just that. I wouldn't say it's overpriced, because comparing to a lot of different keyboards, it's really not that bad and the keycaps aren't that bad either. There is the Drop Alt but as you said the stabilizers aren't great on that keeb. My question is, do you think the Blackwidow V3 Mini's price would go down overtime just like, say one of their mice like the Viper Mini?
(On a side note, I would really enjoy a keyboard, I haven't owned a mechanical keyboard myself yet and I frequently watch your keyboard videos. I think the reason people bring up the custom option is because through lubing and mods you can make the custom sound significantly better than the v3 mini. You compared the blackwidow v3 mini to the kbd 67 lite. If you were to look at a soundtest of that with some lubed switches like gateron yellows or something, it will sound significantly better in my opinion. I feel like to say the blackwidow v3 mini is better than the 67 lite would be false, but it is definitely a better option for the average consumer because they don't have to mod it or pay for any modding tools if they don't have them already like you were talking about with the drop boards.
Also I think the reason people liked the razer huntsman mini is because at the time it came out people had lower expectations for pre builts. I don't think people praised it a lot depending on which review you see, but people did find it as a solid board at the time because outside of like ducky and varmillo boards the expectations weren't that high for pre builts. Stuff like stabilizers didn't really matter as much. Other things like "improved switch design" stood out to them more. They boasted like an improved optical red or something, which could be eye catching for a lot of people.
I think that mice are able to be praised with ridiculous prices because if it truly is the best on the market, people are willing to pay for that said price. No one is denying that the superlight is really expensive, but it really is the best mice overall for a lot of people. The blackwidow v3 mini is an alright board but it isn't the best board you can get ever, which is why people find it expensive. Even though people pay hundreds for their custom keyboards, you really are getting a better experience as well as the customizable factor.
Overall I think I agree with your take in the sense that the board is expensive but not really "overpriced." I can't speak for everyone, but I think that people don't really care about wireless for keyboards. Unless you are taking it places and are always on the go, most of the time it is just sitting at the desk. You could also use it to play on the couch or something but I don't think a lot of people do that either. I know some people going for the minimalist look like wireless peripherals but most of the time they don't use gaming keyboards or aren't really gamers primarily. With a wireless mouse, you can get an improved experience because you aren't limited by your wire, but the keyboard doesn't really move around making it the same experience more or less. Combined with the keyboard being slightly more expensive than some of its counterparts, I think that is the main reason the 180 price tag is so daunting. Also a lot of people in the tech space are kinda cheap because they are already paying so much for their technology. You should try and do some more polls with other peripherals and see what people say about those as well.
On a side note I think the fifine mic you were using sounded really good.

  • @robert490
    @robert490 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes it is expensive, but considering the old flagship razer black widow this is a huge upgrade. Depending on the type of person you are, this could be worth it. If you're wanting to get a keyboard and use it right out the box, this is perfect. Otherwise if you're willing to spend some time tweaking your keyboard, you will get the same results for a lesser price. All user preference!

  • @timf2533

Great comparisons made in this video that support the argument of expensive but not overpriced. I was in multiple conversations with the poll on my thought that this, along with a lot of other boards, was expensive but not overpriced. I like to have back and forth discussions with people, but my big issues is when someone doesn't want a feature or prefers others and uses that to say an item is overpriced. If you don't need/want a given feature set then yeah it will seem overpriced and you should be looking at other options. The suggestion to make a non-wireless version is a great idea. However, I would still lean towards this board anyway as I could benefit from the multi-device wireless and bluetooth.

  • @Neogensis29

Hi Techne, I may be one of those viewers when you said that it should be compared to the ROG Falchion in terms of price and features. I own a Falchion, its my first ROG peripheral, its my first 65% layout and my first wireless keyboard using 2.4ghz. Comparing it to the Falchion, in terms of price first, when I bought it for 150$ / 7.5k Pesos here in PH, I honestly thought it was expensive. So when I saw the BlackWidow V3 Mini's price I was like good grief what was Razer thinking!? Then when I saw your review to see the board and its total features and you said the price was justified I kind of disagreed in my head, but awesome review though haha, so yeah that's my take on the price. As for the connections, I'm a casual gamer but preferably don't want to have too much input lag in whatever I play be it competitive FPS or single/mmorpg casual gaming so I really don't want or need Bluetooth on a keyboard so if I bought it I would never use that feature (again personal preference). Then the keycaps, the Falchion comes with PBT while this uses ABS, and for that price gap I was really expecting PBT, I don't want to worry about my keycaps shining because of my sweaty hands in just a few months. I'm not overly critical on the switches so I don't factor that in my comparison. Then the stand out feature I'd say for the Falchion is that slider that can be used as macro keys as well. I immediately had fun assigning my bottom tap as Alt-Tab macro, my Top Tap as Play/Pause, all the while using it as a volume slider as well, so I thought the BlackWidow V3 Mini had something unique feature to it as well, but it didn't. I do however like the Unified Dongle tech Razer developed. I immediately searched and my Naga Pro Wireless supports it. I imagined I would use just one dongle for my MMO/Work Mouse and wireless keyboard. I own a Viper Ultimate as well so I really thought I could sell my Falchion to my friends, replace it with this so I can uninstall ROG Armoury Crate and just use Synapse for RGB/Battery/Macros etc for my peripherals. But yeah seeing that's all it can offer vs the Falchion is Bluetooth and a chance to use the Unified Dongle by Razer assuming you have a Razer mouse that supports it (I don't know if the Blackshark v2 pro is supported though), I think it is overpriced. I'd buy the Falchion again and say gets some PBT Pudding Key Caps (this is my current set up btw), if I had a maximum budget of 180$ for a new keyboard. End of the day. it's just my opinion, no hate, we're all good! Keep up the awesome videos!

Kbd67 Lite is 110, not 130. Some Durock linear are going to be 40 bucks and keycaps are another 40 for HK gaming dye sub or ePBT blanks. Yes, that's 190 + shipping, but keep in mind that you also get hotswap, gasket mount, screw in stabs, case foam, carrying case and better board acoustics and typing feel

ngl, i voted overpriced, but you have changed my mind. discussions like this are VERY important and your community really appreciates the deeper dive into products and how different people have different need AND wants. I want a gmmk pro, looks awesome and i would lube every switch and all the stabs. but thats me and not every single person in the world ever, some peeps just want to buy a product and use it immediately (literally how people use mice, headsets etc). i like the custom keyboard scene, but its over-hyped imho.

In my opinion I think it is over priced but not as much as people think. It is a very solid keyboard with many great features like the yellow switches and the nice plastic for the key caps. Another thing is that this is one of razors only 65% boards. Razor doesn’t make to many 65’s so it is nice to have a new 65%. I also agree with techne about the markup and everything cause that is true in business, you need to make profit. The only actual problem I have with this board is that it is bluetooth which is fine for people with pc’s that are Bluetooth compatible but for people with an older system that doesn’t have Bluetooth they either couldn’t use it in general or would have to purchase an extra usb Bluetooth hub which cost about 15 bucks on Amazon. All and all it’s a very good keyboard and is worlds better than the one that I currently own so I have some room to praise it lol. Yes I think it’s a bit over priced but in the end with markup and everything all together I still think it’s overpriced but not as crazy as people make it seem.

For me, i agree what Techne said maybe we weren’t seeing expensive keyboards that lately thats why we were bugged out so much about that keyboard but when you compare it to expensive mouse, people actually like them because prices at the top were used to be seen through out the years that we forgot how we look at keyboards, yes it looks like it is overpriced but imagine having that keyboard for free and using it, you will obviously like it because it packs a bundle of new stuff from razer and might change your mind about being overpriced. so dont say its overpriced until you have tried it yourself.

You made some brilliant points. Especially with us consumer's mostly never thinking from the sellers stand point, comparing is a brilliant way to justify the pricing. Because the features on the BlackWidow are amazing. Some people seem so quick to judge without thought. I'm a huge fan of Razer peripherals and I feel like sometimes people use products not based off experience or quality as such and seem to forget about their own personal preference. Like I use the Deathadder V2 and I love it and have no reason in my mind to change because the Deathadder V2 is amazing but I still think of getting the wireless version or maybe trying the Viper. The reason being because I'm relatively new to PC gaming and want to see how I play or cope as such with other mice. I can understand why people wouldn't use the Deathadder V2 because of preference mainly becuase I see no faults with the Deathadder V2 based off quality and the features. I feel like for example the G Pro Wireless Superlight the reputation has saved the product in some ways because as you say with yours, the quality isn't great and for £150 I believe that's over priced for the G Pro Superlight. If they were to make a wired BlackWidow, it would be a huge success.
    Great video, take care.

I feel like part of the razer pricing was just a bro tax bc they know that their supporters are willing to pay that much for their products, but now their build quality is actually really nice, and they’ve listened to reviews and changed products, so the price makes more sense.

I've had a Corsair K95 Plat since 2017 and love it. My biggest reason for wanting something else was the wireless factor. Got a baby in NICU a state away so I would be traveling often and needed something a bit more portable and that could handle hospital couch typing since I was cleared for working remote. At the time, none of Razer's products could handle what I was after and I settled on the Logitech G915 TKL. It's an awesome board but I definitely miss the number pad on occasion. If only Mountain has a wireless module for their Everest keyboard, I'd have probably gone that route. Sometimes expensive is just the cost of doing business and it's strange when people judge others for how they spend their own money. Use case is always unique to the user.

Definitely an expensive product. Really can't add much to what Techne said in the video; he really just described how the consumer should see any product that he/she wants to buy. It was a great example comparing it to other products. Specially asking the question about mices and the hype big brands/companies create for a lot of "competitive" or "gaming" peripherals; they really stigmatize the actual needs of a basic consumer, but that is what marketing is. We can't really complain. What we can really do is choose wich product we are going to buy. Great Techne Talk for this week and an awesome topic! Keep it up and have a nice day! (:

I think I agree with a lot that ur saying now, though I was part of the group saying it was overpriced in the poll. I think that where I was coming from was seeing a lot of other reviewers saying it was overpriced, and also that a wireless keyboard isn’t really something I need, and adding features such as both hyper speed and Bluetooth make it more expensive, but not something that I personally take as adding very much value to the keyboard. I think that, yes, it is quite expensive, but there is justification for that, it isn’t just incredibly overpriced. Also, I definitely agree about a wired version, I think that would be really good if it is priced around 100 or even up to 120.

Honestly, before I watched the video - like the rest of the 80% I was on board with the overpriced statement, but now I honestly think its just expensive. With that $180 price tag, it is definitely expensive - no doubt about that, but I think that with that premium price you get some really nice premium features like that Bluetooth, 2.4ghz, Those Stinkin' Awesome yellow switches, and a solid construction with GMKesque keycaps. It's like apple vs android - with apple products you get that premium, polished feel, but with most cheaper android devices (not including the premium android products), you don't get that "feel" or satisfaction. All that being said, you also want something with features that you may not use today, but might come in handy later so that you can kind of "future-proof" it. Maybe you don't use the bluetooth today, but when you need it for typing something up on a phone or tablet, it can come in real handy. I also liked the LE vs XLE comparison - it is kind of what it is. If you want you can get those cheap amazon keyboards, but you wont get the best build - still most of the same features, but not the best build.
Also thanks to @The Techne - I have a different approach on products.
Btw, can't wait for the Arctis Prime review!

Thanks for this full of information talks. It brings a little more perspective on keyboards price and value. At the end, I agree with your conclusion: expensive but not overpriced. I mean take a look at the G915 TKL: wireless too, but with simple ABS keycaps... it comes at 230 € (yes, I speak in €, I'm from Belgium \0/ ). Here I think we can start to talk about overpriced. Even if its design is amazing ! A question to finish my comment: I'm looking for a new keyboard and I'm really thinking about TKL or a 65% (I have a 100% for now) to have more space for the mouse. Regarding the fact that I work 50% of my time on my PC (writing mail, documents, XLS... ), do you think TKL or 65% is an appropriate size? Or should I stay on 100%? Thanks !

I'm still thinking about either getting this keyboard or the new wireless Miya pro. I love wireless keyboards to match my minimalist setup with no wires. Comparing the two keyboards, the Miya pro definitely has more options in colors and switches, and it is also easier to replace with keycaps. I think the Razer Blackwidow V3 Mini is $30 more because of the branding tbh, but I love being able to sync all my lighting through the software, the design is slightly more compact, and I like how they included a mini wrist rest at the front. Because of my ocd, I'd want my peripherals to match (my mouse being the Razer viper ultimate) so I would honestly go for the Blackwidow V3 wireless. I've been looking for a 2.4 wireless 65% keyboard so this is perfect.

100% agree!! As you said in your original video, it is a bit expensive but definitely not over priced. But unfortunately I feel this is going to be the norm, due to other reasons not having to do with the company themselves. Current world events are driving up shipping costs nearly double (Domestic and international), plus the tariffs that went into effect earlier this year may have some effect as well. Those extra costs have to go somewhere.

For me the price might be a lot but you’re getting a wireless keyboard with zero latency, that’s good for competitive gameplay, what other keyboards give you that without also having a huge price tag and in this form factor? It’s expensive, but can’t say it’s overpriced looking at the competition. It has all the features I’m looking for in a keyboard but others might not care about the wireless and won’t want to pay extra for it. Hopefully Razer releases a wired one too!

I use the Drevo Caliber V2 Pro wireless a budget Bluetooth 65% keyboard had it for a year and man it's so nice, may not have the best switches rocking Outemu browns but this board has all the navigation buttons so more button then the Razer BlackWidow V3 Mini. For only $79CAD this board is great for people just getting into the mechanical keyboard scene, you can buy the Drevo board and get better keycaps (the ABS keycaps it comes with are crap), a custom cable and still be under the $180USD price. Small sized keyboard should be way more affordable then TKL or fullsize, you are getting less features but paying for a price for a TKL sized board, there are a lot of more affordable and even better feature wise 65% boards out there you can get like from Drevo, RK or even Keychron.

  • @vaudou_

I actually didn't see the review until this video popped up on my inbox. People do overuse the term "overpriced" without thinking about all the aspects that go into that. Boardzy had a really good point about the Orochi and why it's overpriced compared to the G305. After you replace the mouse feet with something comparable and decent mod the G305 you're essentially paying a similar price and the Orochi might have a preferable shape.
I would have said that the Huntsman Mini was overpriced since it's not a good out of the box experience compared to other cheaper keyboard like the Durgod Venus which I own thanks to your review. But if the BlackWidow gives you features out of the box to comparable products and has a good user experience, it's not overpriced

Honestly I think the 180 price is justified alone by the features and hardware that is packed in the mini hyperspeed. Just like you said in the video, custom keyboards can cost up to or even more than 200 usd. Other brands may cost the same or a little less but minus some the of the features or hardware included in the blackwidow. I'd get it for sure.

  • @K-----
    @K----- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Great video. Honestly agree with all of your points.
For me, I purchased a complete layout Corsair board for I think around $150. It has served me well and I use the Num pad and passthrough quite a bit. That said, the Numpad does get in my way when I am not working and just want to game. That puts me in the market to "upgrade" to the Razer I think. From this aspect, I have to compare what I have and the features I may be giving up for more space on my desk and wireless.
The first thing that I notice on the keyboard is the lack of the three features I use the most. Number pad (which is what I want to be missing) the lack of media controls, and the lack of a pass-through (understandable). I feel though like directly missing these things subsequentially adds onto the price overall that I will have to pay to replace my current board. Needing to get media controls, hub/dock for device passthrough, and a number pad. I think right there disqualifies me from choosing this board as the price does exponentially increase and does get to custom territory when adding in all the extras I need, and personally, I am fine with the wire coming from a keyboard. So that tradeoff and real selling point doesn't stick to me.
I do think however that your idea for a wired version around $100 would be perfect for people like me. I would switch then. After purchasing the needed extras for my setup I would be around $180 which I feel is a fair upgrade as I spent $150 for what I have now. The feature of wireless isn't the draw for me as much as the overall layout and feel. Wireless is cool, but for my uses, it doesn't justify the price (For me).
So in short I think it's expensive but rightfully priced. I think for my needs it doesn't fit them so it would be "overpriced" but just because my values don't line up with what the board is trying to do. But, if they were to release a wired version (maybe with media keys and USB pass-through... plz Razer) at that lower price point it would justify the price for my needs and I would more than likely end up replacing my current board with it and a number pad.
If you read through my essay of a comment thank you lol. I am more than happy to explain something if a part didn't make sense.

    • @TheTechne

I really have wanted to get a setup like that and get better audio quality headsets, but I honestly use the mic on my headsets so much that I would have to find a decent mic setup to fit in the little room I have on my desk. Also its nice to be able to go walk away from my keyboard and still be able to chat with someone on discord with a wireless headset, which a mounted mic wouldn't give me.
I know if you ever review any wireless (non gaming) more premium/ audiophile headset if they even make those and a third party detachable wireless mic I will be switching ASAP if they are stinkin cozy and have great audio.

So nice to see more wireless keyboards (2.4) in the market. I hate my corsair K65 rapidfire's extra thick cable, it was a pain to route and it needed 2 usb ports as well to operate both the keyboard and pass through. My 2.1 speaker made it even harder to route because it was placed right in fron of the keyboard (under the monitor) so the thick cable had to bend so the cable would kind of push back the speakers.
The Asus Falchion seems like a very good option for me, the only thing i dont like about it is the font they use. The razer one though looked a lot better but it didnt have as much features as the asus falchion with its touch bar and plastic cover while being more expensive. I might buy the falchion instead

I wish more people who thought it was overpriced like me could see this because you totally changed my mind on this keyboard.
