One of the biggest hindrance to adoption of folding phones is the lack of app compatibility with the square aspect ratio. Great to see a proper 16:9 and it'll be interesting to see what becomes of it
Exactly my fold 3 rarely get full screen use when using apps or streaming films.
100% I went through 2 version of the Galaxy Fold and loved it until the apps started driving me crazy. It actually pushed me from Android to iPhone for the first time in my life. Will just wait for Apple to create the revolutionary folding phone. :-)
The creases look awful tbf
Tbh it really isnt that big of a deal for most users. Its not really about the number of apps that support 4:3, but the number of apps you actually use that supports it, and a lot of the biggest, most popular apps can handle it just fine
Imo the much bigger problem is how bad a 4:3 screen is for watching 16:9 video, and of course price
To me it's the price lol... That, and probably the absolute nonresistance to dust and debris. I would love something like this that has a 6.4-6.7 in screen on the outside, then you flip it out like this for maximum screen... However, it needs to be at least 1/3rd the price for me to even consider, and then have slightly more resistance to dust and debris from absolutely destroying the thing... Bonus points for a tougher "flexible glass" that doesn't just scratch at a level 3 moes pick and maybe some semblance of water resistance.
Seems like Huawei is really stepping up their game. That phone looks amazing.
An amazingly bad and expensive product. Basically you shouldn't go to the beach with it or sand and water will kill it. Oh, and don't put it down on a couch or you will accidentally sit on and break the weak hinges. Don't drop it, or tap it too hard either.

@@mike0six yes, and where is the Samsung tri-fold? Or Samsung is just good at making patents and that's it?
This feels like the end state for folding phones. So much about it makes so much sense. It means you one needs one screen, not a big screen and a "cover" screen, like most foldables. And fully unfolded, it gives you a tablet sized screen with an appropriate aspect ratio, not some weird square screen like most foldables.
tech isnt there yet for durabilty a few more years
Add a keyboard and you got a basic computer to send email and edit documents. China is living in the future, NIO cars have swappable batteries instead of charging them, Tri fold phones while here we are still stuck with iphone and tesla old technology.
There is a next step...
A 5 or 6 inch tube like a cigar cylinder where the screen pulls-out and stays flat. The battery (etc.) is in the cylinder, which what you hold it by. Will fit easily in breast pockets etc. Companies are working on that form factor.
@@johnpublicprofile6261 Im picturing a phone like that and it's making me think it could work, especially if the materials science for the screen aren't there yet, instead of needing to replace a full phone, it would just be the screen itself and the rest of it would be intact hopefully making repairs cheaper.
That’s exactly what I thought. I always found the book-type foldables wasteful because they have two fully functional screens that you do not use simultaniously. Huawei has previously experimented with the monoscreen foldable but the durability was always a weakness. This looks like a good next step.
I had a Huawei once, and I loved the camera. However, I was worried of Australia banning it because of USA. As soon as I have an opportunity, I will purchase a Huawei again.
My Honor got rejected to join the celluer network since the 3G network switched off, because of it uses 3G for emergency calls. what a damn reason

Imagine how much better the iPhone 16 Pro, Galaxy S24U, and Pixel 9 would've been today if Huawei wasn't banned and lost access to chips for 5 years.
They said market freedom, then they shut down Cuba. Nothing new under the sun
All three would literally be the same because no one buys Huawei's in those three companies biggest markets. Paired with the fact innovation is dead at Apple and Samsung, with it rapidly draining out of Google's Pixel team, I doubt much would be different. Was just in China and visited Huawei/Xiaomi/Oppo retail stores dotted in major malls, they are out with so many bifold and trifold phones with much improved creases than those early generation models. It’s now a serious consideration for the compactness of an EDC smartphone. Quality wise, they are not differentiated with those from Apple. The only significant factor is with Huawei’s own HarmonyOS. Played with v4.2.0 and it’s really smooth and has many interface improvements over Android. By my real life assessment, this trade war on China by the US administrations really has backfired on the US. The sooner the US learns that it’ll be displaced to be world #2, and at some point #3 by India, the better it is. Screwing with a strategy that expects an unrealistic #1 is completely counterproductive and is just accelerating the downfall. Much wiser to strategise for a realistic solid #2 and try to extract maximum national interest in that position.

iPhone in 2024: We've added a camera button and now all your photos will have slight motion blur!
I mean, one of the phones you're comparing *is* a USD$3,500 phone being sold *in China*. If Apple were to sell a base for 3 grand, they'd be laughed to death no matter what they do, and I'm not even talking about factoring Huawei's pricing in American consumer prices to get a real reference to how much this would cost in North America.

This is the most exciting phone I've seen in YEARS. As for the weaknesses, I never actually use phone speakers except for ringtone and notifications so it doesn't matter that they're bad. If I want good audio I use headphones or a speaker anyway. And the price is steep. But that's something that can come down with time. Along with scratch resistance on the screen and how prominent the fold lines are. This form factor should be the new standard for folding phones. It's actually amazing for video and gaming content.

Getting pretty close to having an useable office computer in a pocket.
I have dual opinion about this phone, it's impressive and in many use cases it's perfect phone where all my needs are fulfilled by this one device, but on the other hand having 2 devices, standard phone and tablet with thicker bezels is just more comfortable and I don't have to make tradeoffs in screen durability, visible crises, and battery size, so my opinion is 50:50, great concept device but still needs a lot of work and tech advancements.
Always great to see your balanced reviews and so glad that you didn't tear down the phone just for the sake of it - considering I just saw a couple of videos do just that. It really is a marvel of technology.
This is exactly what I want. Incredible product.
incredible on the outside ,inside it use weak 7nm chip and a buggy OS ,got the look but not much use
And Jerryrigeverythings durability test just proved exactly why you don't want it.
Good luck with $3000 junk after couple months
An incredibly bad product.
Two things:
1) the second I saw the first foldables, I wanted this to happen. It's the next logical step, and it's so much closer to "no compromises" than current foldables. Not perfect, of course, but I kinda hate square screens. It's literally all in one, I freaking love it.
2) When you open it the "wrong" way, why not just auto-open the camera in that mode that uses the main cameras for selfies? Kills two birds with one stone: it makes it obvious that you've opened the phone the other way, and it speeds up the process of switching to that camera mode if you want to use it regularly.
Huawei in 2024: adding 2 extra screens.
Apple in 2024: adding 2 extra buttons.
Feeds two birds with one scone
i have to say the first part of your argument. its a great device dont get me wrong. ill give it an 8
- because its china only, they cant use Snapdragon (qualcomm chip) so its slower (about the same as 2020 chip snap 888)
- the reason samsung doesnt do folding outward like this is because when you put it in your pocket, the flexible display is EXPOSED (unlike the book-like fold samsung use). so there will be a time where one of the 3 screen that is exposed 24/7 will be scratched VERY easily in pocket (compared to when you pocket Samsung Z fold and the outside is a proper gorilla glass phone) because we cant control a little grain of sand/gravel got into your pocket
its a good attempt at inovation but until we find a material that is flexible and scratch around the same level as glass, folding outwards isnt practical in the slightest
Thin screens and one fold the wrong way, kaput your phone is just an expensive brick, it also costs a lot to fix the screen. Y'all not familiar with the Chinese market won't understand the issues this phone has.
@@canthandlethetruth-djioh no, if i break it - it breaks??
I dailied a Huawei phone in the US for 3 years. It was the P30 Pro, making it the last before the Google/US ban, meaning I could get all the normal apps. It was missing a few radios, so sometimes reception was a little worse, but most times it was fine. I ultimately switched because all the US carriers now require you to have an iPhone, Samsung, or Pixel (or one of the cheap phones they sell you directly) to use features like WiFi calling, even if the phone supports this natively (which the P30 does).
The thing I miss most about it was that it is the only phone I have ever used that basically had no battery worries. I just never thought about it, and in the 3 years I had it, only twice did it get near to running out: once, when taking several hundred (a thousand?) pictures at a show, and once towards the end when the battery was getting weaker, and I used it for an hour long video conference while taking hundreds more pics at a show. Huawei does pretty aggressively close apps in the background, but this really works to extend battery life to last 2 days or more. I wish more manufacturers would copy this bit.
Another cool feature (before AI became the latest trend) was the camera's AI subject/scene identification. It could literally tell a bicycle from a motorcycle, and would tell you what the item was on screen. It would then optimize the settings for that scene. Also, the night-mode beat all other brands, as it could see in almost total darkness due to the RYYB sensor (versus the standard RGGB sensor in pretty much every phone), and super-sampling. It was one of the first phones with periscope zoom built in as well, long before Samsung.

I am still daily driving my P30 Pro and the only issue I have had is the fact the the screen broke a month ago. Had to have it replaced fast, so I went for a knockoff brand the next day. The screen quality is not the same and the fingerprint reader has some issues now. That said, it still supports everything I need it to do, the responsiveness is the same as ever and the camera quality is still amazing. Huawei does indeed make some amazing flagship phones, but the sanctions make people forget how good they still are.

I loved my P30 Pro, then I fell in love with foldables and bought a Galaxy Z Fold3. That died (the infamous flex cable defect), and in between phones I went back to the Huawei. Since then I gave Samsung another shot with the Fold5, but I still feel the P30 Pro was hands down the best all-rounder phone I've ever had. I do hope that now that Huawei has managed to produce a tri-fold, this will propel others manufacturers to try it, as a visually impaired user, i adore the idea of being able to look at something on my phone sized screen and if i want to see more detail I can open the phone up to full screen, this would be wonderful for instagram.
I doubt it will push anybody, apple got people clapping for adding another button, that's where we are at man. I doubt there is people out there who even noticed
@@kaydend5192 Apple isn't at the cutting edge of screen technology though, they're software based, Samsung, even Google are doing foldables because they recognise that we are hitting maximum brick phone, people aren't changing phone every year as there isn't anything new on the hardware side.
Or wonderful for Minecraft 😎
This is amazing. It looks like it will be really fun to use. If I am fortunate enough, I would like to own this some day in the future.
Outstanding job, Huawei! What a brilliant feat of engineering. Totally deserves a smartphone award!

That's a really impressive piece of tech. As an early adopter of the foldables, I would love to take one for a spin.
Huawei in 2024: adding 2 extra screens.
Apple in 2024: adding 2 extra buttons.
This format is actually really cool. I’d buy one
The cases and screen protectors are gonna be fun to put on

Even the official case is hideous.
If these were still available in australia i would 100% get one, my biggest gripe with the folds is that the aspect ratio is always funky, this solves that issue
At least Melbourne still has Huawei store, saw one in the Glen Shopping centre
do u have any idea how expensive it is? Good thing about stated sponsored company is they can do burn any amount of cash they want to push out tech, but the downfall is if they fail it's after their head

As an Aussie, I bought a Huawei P30 Pro in Nov 2019 and it is still going strong. It was the last Huawei phone in Australia to be Android & Google Play compatible. I definitely understand the embargo 🕵️🇨🇳🕵️, but appreciate the technology and competition of Huawei products.
I have the lite version (since 2019). Had to do a battery replacement as I was gaming with fast charger back during corona. Now it's kinda slow compared to my new flagship, but it still works fine except for the camera
The embargo was like 'wait, only us are allowed to spy on people!'
I have one still going strong. Not planning to replace it anytime soon.
@@noticiasinmundicias I feel ya on that one. I was like, I am pretty sure Google & Meta have more data on me than Huawei.
At the time Huawei were pretty much the fastest selling phone in the world ,they surpassed Samsung and they were on a trajectory to surpass iPhone too , Huwei is technically the only phone that was competing against iPhone even in the US,that would have been good for consumers as iPhone was force to innovate in order to sell but with the ban of Huawai, iPhone has just a monopoly over the US market which means that it is bad for the consumers since they are not force to innovate
That looks absolutely insane!

A good piece of tech makes this man happy
WOW, It's really quite impressive, Quality piece of Engineering on both the Hardware and Software
I've been using Huawei Mate xs2 for a year ( a phone with screens on the outside) no case and still no scratches. Impressive tbh
Apple 16 innovation: new action button
Huawei innovation: 3 foldable screens
A lovely piece of tech. Thanks for introducing and peace. ❤
This is the only fold that I actually approve of. 16:9 aspect ratio is the way to consume content in over 90% of SM and media consumption platforms; this just makes sense. The other folding (dual folding - no pun intended) phones are just a fancy way to see bigger bezels on videos.
This thing is also a dual fold (🫤), so any aspect ratio works fine on this. Too bad it’s not global.
Agree 100%. The Fold 5 is a great daily driver but the way people defend the square drives me bananas. We're barely half way through figuring out the best design.

Apple claims that it has tri-fold, too. Just get 3x iphone 16, duct-tape them together to make an Apple tri-fold . . . . magic, right?
Granulation! It is your best review so far. Because you don't have any reference Favourite for it. So it is a real objective view. 😉
Can I try folding it?
No Zack, leave that baby alone.
HUAWEI watch D2 also deserves your review and appreciation, what a technology inside
Thank you Marques for such a wonderful review!
love the tech!... phone is awesome, super thin! But not something you can just throw in your purse or pocket. The screen is plastic and scratches even with fingernails, and a bit of dust / dirt in hinges or low temperatures impede folding. Idea of having a huge foldable screen in such a small form factor is amazing, even if only in theory, since it is a chore to fold and unfold, and when closed it is just a thick heavy 6 inch phone. still amazing first generation idea.
I can't wait to tri it.
I'll see myself out.
lol
🤣ok this was epic.

Man, I wish Huawei has the colors of the iPhone 16
They literally have 2 freaking folds on the OLED and is the bleeding edge of technology and this guy is still stuck at iphone colours. I understand how Apple is still in business after selling the same thing over and over again. It's because of people like these. @@BrunoDias1234
That’s nuts… and awesome… thank you for going to the trouble of getting one and sharing the experience!
And then you have Apple thinking that moving icons in your homescreen is revolutionary XD
Ye and this dude in the video did not say anything about the outdated chip in this Z fold, and poor quality of stolen from Samsung technology of folding screen. A lot of people complain that screen stops working after using it for a while.

I have had a Huawei phone in Australia for a couple of years. I bought because it had the best camera at the time, a Leica lens and genuine mechanical plus optical zoom. It has been great so far. Google works fine in this part of the world. The US really needs to get over its fear of China.
Absolutely, competition is always good for the customers
An in South Africa and we have the entire range of Huawei products including their new PURA 70 ultra6
@@noticiasinmundiciasthat’s also one of the reasons why iPhone literally stopped innovating simply because they don’t need to innovate anymore since most young people in the US just buy iPhone and there is no actual competition .Before Huawai was banned ,Huawai was the fastest selling phone on the market , it was selling more then Samsung and they were on track to actually take market share from Apple In the US market which it is insane since Huawai is technically the only phone that was actually starting to compete with Apple in the North American market at the time I was recommending Huawai to a lot of people since it was the best android device out there .
