Wow, traffic on this video is way up this month. Thanks BREADSWORD, I guess. If I could try to clear up a few details though: I don't dislike Treasure Planet, despite the impression a lot of people have gotten from watching this. It's actually one of my favorite Disney movies, which I thought I had communicated effectively enough in this review, but a lot of people got tripped up on me constantly checking the science. I know there's a lot of nitpicking in this video. I even knew it when I originally posted it in 2011, but rather than shy away from it, I leaned into it and tried to make it a joke on myself and other audiences who might have done the same, hence this line at 9:43. I probably could have done more to make my opinions clearer, but I still had a lot to learn about film criticism and content creation in general. I still think Treasure Planet suffers from the occasional tonal dissonance, and BEN will forever be the movie's lowest point, but I enjoy it nonetheless.
No one is saying that you had no point. But you DEFINITIVELY kept throwing the negatives into our face over and making them sound worse than they ever should've been but REMEMBER that it's based off of a story/ novel/ animated story (based off the novel) but they're trying to stay true to the source material while imrpoving on it. I love this film, yes, but this review is too negative towards it. This movie IS GOOD.
Il Neige i actually enjoyed this movie for what it was and i still do, i even have it on dvd! I also saw it when it was in the theaters and i thought it was great despite it's flaws. Plus i was a kid when I saw it, just s few years younger than you.
Ngl Jim Hawkins is probably the most attractive thing to come out of disney EVER Also Silver's speeches are some of the best dialogue in any disney film
Are people really distracted by the whole "pirate ship in space"? they said in this universe its called Etherium or something. Its a sort of magical atmosphere I guess. dont think of it as space. Think of it as its own thing. Its not about reason but more about the joys of imagination really.
It must have been created by the ancient gods outside their universe, and they must have been around long before the creation of the Treasure Planet universe
Honestly, the whole "Air in Space" doesn't bother me. While it can be distracting, I don't really need to turn off my brain to enjoy it. Mostly because I've read pulp sci-fi stories that treat scientific fact as merely a backdrop. Honestly, I think this is truly an underrated gem.
eastwing329 plus, you don't see the doctor wear a helmet when he opens the TARDIS door to look outside. maybe there's tech in those ships that do the same job.
I mean they set their rules pretty clear here. it isn't "space" its the aetherium which is a low/zero gravity zone between planet(oid)s that does contain an atmosphere.
Space in Treasure Planet is based on the theory that was popular in Robert Louis Stevenson's time-that outer space was not a vacuum, but filled with a substance called aether. Hence its name: the Etherium. The sizes of the various celestial bodies in the movie are also severely disproportionate.
I love this movie and think it is one of the all time most underrated disney movies. i would like to point out that at the beginning of the video when you mention how whenever disney has tried to do their own original idea for a story and how they don't usually work out, you use a clip from The Emperor's New Groove, which actually isn't an original story. it's a spin on The Emperor's New Clothes. the movie still didn't do that great (though i personally love it) but it's not one of their attempts at an original idea.
10:41 This entire sequence gets me every time and it strangely parallels my life.. My dad left my mom when I was little. I remember him walking out the door. As a response, I went in search for my mother. The sequence of Jim's mother crying into her hands while sitting is EXACTLY how I found my mother. Considering that this movie came out a couple years after my dad left my mom you could imagine how I was affected by this moment in the movie.
I was so afraid you were going to be mostly negative about my favorite movie of all time and I'm glad you weren't. And all you're negatives were fairly justified, although for some reason the unrealistic-ness never bothered me and although I don't like BEN now I know I loved him when I was younger and this is a kids movie after all. I hate how ridiculously unappreciated this movie is and I hope this review gives it a bit more positive attention.
In reality, it's a movie for everyone, because Animation (which isn't a genre, but a technique), isn't only addressed to a single category, but to all 😉👍
This is such an underraded movie and it deserves much more love! There's a book about the work behind this movie and it explains evrything about the whole - air in space thing - and why the animators didn't created "real spaceships" and all that. They where inspired by the story treasure island written by Robert Louis Stevenson and they wanted there movie to look like one of Stevenson's adventures as well (like he had written it like a space adventure) that means the future like it would have bin in the 18 Century. That's why there's holografic Lockets but no tv and they are flying in old ships instead of spaceships. Don't criticizes something you don't know enything about! (Just my opinion)
Man, it's no wonder Captain Amelia was easily POed when Silver almost succeeded at dethroning her and threatening to kill her, whereas Silver somehow percieved Amelia as an oppressive tyrant.
I genuinely think this is one of their best. As for Ben yeah he's annoying, But needed for it to be an adaptation if you remember the book there is an old man that was marooned on the island. It's still a good movie with it's flaws.
+PeanutButterBrony Ben is like the mandatory annoying comic relief. It's like a tradition now. You had Timon and Pumba from the Lion King, the Gargoyles from Hunchback of Notre Dame....I'm sure there are others.
I love this movie so damn much. This, Notre Dame and Atlantis are my favorite Disney movies. The soundtracks in all three of them are 10/10, too. I love the setting in this movie. In no other movie would you see a sailship fly through space.
Tresure Planet is the most beautiful Disney film to date, in my opinion. The story line and character development is extremely well thought through. Just amazing.
I love this movie I remember watching this in theaters and it's my favorite Disney movie of all time that isn't a Marvel movie and I want this to be a world in Kingdom Hearts so badly
Mygingerguy source? I know it was an unfinished world in DDD but as of now it's not confirmed I'm not saying your wrong but don't jinx it plz.... or are you from the future 0-0
Laura Schlieselhuber I completely agree, the movie is ment for kids that's why there isn't any logic in it. which is why I love it, it makes me feel like a kid with some of imagination left.
2:23 Notice how when Doug talked about this movie on Disneycember, that very portion was something that took him out of the experience but Neige, being at about the right age this movie was for when it came out, actually likes it . . . as do I.
This movie has all the most awesome reality inspirations crammed into, who doesn't dream of belonging somewhere, who doesn't dream of exploring the unknown, who hasn't wondered about the beautiful awesome possibilities of adventure outside the world we live in. Also combine that with Jim's story and throw some future modern Disney omnipotent magic in there and you have a classic that...ends on a emo-wrenching full circle cliff hanger like all damn Disney movies.
Yeah. The little engineer inside of me DESPISES this movie. The wooden spaceships with no pressure vessels, Silver's bottomless arm, B.E.N.'s eyebrows. But the artist and the man inside of me LOVE this movie. The character development, the visual effects, the pacing, the plot, everything was awesome. I would recommend this movie to most anybody. But dang it! They could easily have made the spaceship more spaceship-like.
+Cody Martinson Nothing says anything *has* to involve anything. In this fictional universe there's air in space. That's all the explanation anyone needs.
Super late to the party here but Treasure Planet has been my favorite movie since it's release date, and has been a consistent obsession of mine for the last 15 years. I wanted to address your gripe with the physics involving space and air. Firstly, this movie doesn't technically take place in traditional space. Though physically impossible, Treasure Planet takes place in a galaxy/celestial pocket known as the "Etherium" which somehow does indeed have it's own constant atmosphere and breathable air throughout the entire containment of the Etherium, which explains why there's are crazy space whales and, yes, winds of the Etherium, not technically space. The night and day cycle could just be chalked up to some kind of dispersed ambient lighting on the ship or just possibly they conveniently pass into the stronger lighting radius of a star for sake of plot convenience. Keep in mind this is also taking place during a several month long journey so it's entirely possible that there were long legs of the trip that resembled day or night for upwards of weeks at a time. That is all for now.
It was a very experimental time for Disney. Some managed to pull off decency, like this and Emperor's New Groove. And particularly Lilo & Stitch. And then you've got Atlantis and Brother Bear, which didn't fare too well.
I love how people freak out over "pirateships in space" but wholeheartedly accept talking animals. Plus, those ships did look futuristic, so they probably had something that gave tgem oxygen.
This was a passion project of the directors 10 years in the making and it shows. This story is so completely underrated and many little details connect to tell a great, emotionally charged adaptation of a classic story. Granted, it could have been just fine without "Jar Jar 3PO" as you called him, but he does have a parallel in the original story that's just as uncalled for. This is one of the most underrated movies because Disney didn't want it to succeed when it was released. Most people who've seen it recognize it as a classic.
Another piece of brilliance that I never noticed until another youtuber pointed it out was that you can tell Silver's mood by the pants he's wearing. Striped equals friendly and kind, Red equals treacherous and conniving.
I just stumbled over your video on 'accident' almost but I am more than happy about it. I completely and utterly enjoyed your style of critique. The parts with Frollo and the references to red shirts actually made me laugh out loud (other parts, too, for example the door of irony, but all these scenes would be too many to mention) and although I'm quite sure I'd have enjoyed your video either way, I am happy that you liked the movie for all the things I love about it. This really took me back and I am happy that you appreciate the little and great moments that captured my heart years ago (and still do). You just gained a subscriber and I am looking forward to clicking through your archives. :D
I applaude this review, funny, relatable and very informative. and i'm usually quite skeptical when it comes to these kinds of youtubers. Well done, man : )
For what I remember, the "Aetherium" referenced in the very beginning of the film is that substance allowing the freedom of space breathing. This could *theoretically* be a thing, considering part of our real view of the Milky way is actually obscured by a super-giant hydrogen cloud. However, the directors allowed only that single throwaway reference in the film. Its not your - nor anyone else's - fault for perceiving Disney pulled that out of absolutely nowhere. I was saddened by this film's failure years ago. There were FAR worse films that people were flocking to at that time. I actually blame the ad campaign. I distinctly remember it not being good AT ALL.
It's "the Etherium" (ether from the greek αιθερ, which means air) the opening scene serves to establish that this is a world where space is breathable and hence things work differently. While the movie doesn't have an expository scene to establish what would be a in-movie-universe fact, I still think the space criticisms of the movie are a bit off, like everyone gets it and knows that "this isn't how real space works" , will agree that BEN though is this movie's Jar Jar Binks, thankfully he is not in it for long. BTW Great comedy in this video
For the thing that Jim is animated people shiping him with others cartoon or life action character is 100% TRUE. Like they ship him with Ariel (the little mermaid) - my otp for life; with Melody (Arile's daughter) ; Alice and even more..... THIS IS NUTS!!!!
Idk why, but the way the crab guy says 'Cabin boy...' while standing menacingly in the doorway and opening his claw threateningly always makes me laugh a little, not because it's funny, but because of how awesome it is.
Well in Ben's defense, he is based on Ben Gunn who was marooned on the island and since everyone from the book had to be there, Ben had to be there. Still doesn't make Ben good but the creators didn't really have a choice.
And Disney probably made them make the character way overboard because there weren't enough jokes (for the studio) without it. And it was just incredibly unfunny
The Etherium is probably a reference to Aether. In the 19th century scientists believed aether was the medium by which light traveled through space. At the time it was not believed that light could travel through a vacuum so they assumed that space was not a vacuum. This fits with the steampunk aesthetics fairly well.
The part with all the inaccuracies in space did bug me a little too when I first watched it, but then I realized something. This movie, with all of those space inaccuracies, is extremely consistent in that regard. It doesn't give a problem about oxygen tanks when there were known, it doesn't ever have a problem of not being able to tell time in space, the lack of burning up upon leaving or reentry or other ones of the sort. I guess that's why I can attach myself to this universe so much and look over the mistakes: the fact that it is consistent....or I'm biased and I just can't get enough of this movie. *shrugs* Take your pick ;)
My theory for breathing on that ship is tardis logic. It has some sort of force field or whatever and if you watch Doctor Who's The Runaway Bride, question answered.

Malohn etherium was actually based on an old Victorian era idea about Space.
The winds of the Aetherium could be so calm and peaceful that they could make one's spirit soar
It must have been created by the ancient gods outside their universe, and they must have been around long before the creation of the Treasure Planet universe
So it's not actually the vacuum of space, more of a different kind of space where there is breathable oxygen just zero gravity?
@@tjjordan4207 yes.

Treasure planet is awesome, one of my favorites.
Other than the fantastical settings, this is actually an extremely faithful adaptation of the source material.
LMAO "I'm damaged...ship me!" XD
This is was my second film that I have ever watched when I was little.
In BEN's defense, he was based on a crazy marooned for years sailor that was pretty much loosing his mind...yeah, he and BEN are pretty much the same
Idk why, but the way the crab guy says 'Cabin boy...' while standing menacingly in the doorway and opening his claw threateningly always makes me laugh a little, not because it's funny, but because of how awesome it is.
You are by far one of the most hilarious people on the internet and you are as funny as Smosh, don't stop making videos
Fun fact: Flint is voiced by Peter Cullen and Onus is voiced by Corey Burton.
The Pagemaster was what inspired me to read the book. That movie and this movie's Long John Silvers are all my favorite versions.
Are you going to review Hunchback and Anastasia?
5400 subs? That's criminal. You deserve more!
I love this movie I'll never forget watching it at 7 years old in that theather in phoenix!
This together with Atlantis the lost empire was so big parts of my childhood that you wouldtn believe it.
my favourite movie of all time
epic movie. i watched this when i was 13 and came back to it 9 years later..i am more than satisfied
This movie is beyond incredible.
Jim's scar can't decide which eye it wants to be under.
PLEASE DO HOW TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 1 AND 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (:
YES
Really good movie. The robot is just slightly over the top, making it rather exhausting on the third act.
The internet just wants to see Jim's mom be happy and settle down with someone nice.
Oh god XD 8:15 minutes in and you have officially become my favourite movie channel ever. Holy shit Kyle it's Man-bear-pig
on the subject of disney movies. I think it'd be awesome if you did a review of Recess: Schools Out
That Frollo bit in the beginning absolutely killed me. Great timing on that one!
It's great to see you can post uncut reviews on youtube again. This was one of my favorites, along with Titan AE and Atlantis.
To be fair, most of the things that 'mature adults' say 'build character' involve intense physical risk in a controlled setting, so.
Zachary Vargas exactly. After watching doctor who, I went like, so that's how it worked in Treasure Planet
