Director's Note: Did you notice that Silver is holding the boat with the treasure with his mechanical arm and reaching out to save Jim with his organic side. It is a visual metaphor of the character himself and the moral choice between his two sides. He is a character that has literally sacrificed parts of his humanity in pursuit of the treasure, but when it matters he chooses otherwise.😀
@@felixhenson9926 not quite, its not the amputation itself, the arm and his other modifications are the consequences of his greed, and therefore a representation of his greed itself. you can have an amputation through no fault of your own and overwhelmingly that's the majority case, it just so happens that for specifically Silver, he got injured chasing after treasure.
@@itspice8737 In this movie specifically Silver has a line when talking about the cybernetics where he says that he sacrificed some things chasing a dream. (dream is implied as the treasure from knowledge the viewer has, and it is also delivered in a way that makes it seem that the arm and leg werent all that was sacrificed)
Captain Amelia was really inspiring to me as a kid because I think she was the first female character I'd seen that was a leader and everyone just accepted that she was the captain without her gender being a barrier. The pirates didn't turn against her because she was female, they just wanted the treasure. Like, her ability was never in question, she was strong and assertive and proud of herself, but also pretty and kind... and none of it got questioned. She didn't have to defend who she was. It meant so much to me as a kid.
Yes! I love Amelia! I've also always loved how sassy and quick-witted she is. I'm also pretty certain I learned several larger fancy words from her. I love when kids movies don't dumb things down and use more complex vocabulary.

Disney's experimental era is, to this day, my favorite. Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Brother Bear, and Dinosaurs were/are a pivotal moment to me, and anytime I'm feeling like life has kicked me to the ground, these movies help inspire me to get up. 15/10 great movie.
Brother "godt damn" Bear is an underrated gem of the highest order. I will die on that hill, it knows what it's core lesson is, makes that point marvelously, and has great humor for good measure. And Phil Collins. I like that soundtrack almost just as much as Tarzan.
I was about 4 years old when I saw Dinosaur the first time on VHS and it was my introduction to dinosaurs and I loved dinosaurs ever since. I had dinosaur themed birthday parties twice in a row when I was 5 and 6.
Yes! This! And the fact that they're all kind of looked down on by most critics as some of the lower ranking Disney films is INSANE to me. They're so unique! And beautiful!
They didn't mention that Jim's father didn't die. He abandoned his wife and child. It was really important to Jim to find a father figure who wouldn't abandon him. That's why it meant so much to him when John chose to save him at the end.

If a sequel ever happened I would have it take place years later Jim is grown up & he sees his father again & his dad now wants to be a part of his life but Jim is furious & tells his dad where to step off. His dad's excuse is he wasn't ready to be a father & he regrets marrying too soon which angers Jim even more but Jim tells him he had a father figure who helped him become the man he is today. At the end of the movie Jim's dad dies & Jim has made peace with it he goes on to do great things (Jim's mom is still alive by the way & she too is angry her husband left her).
Growing up, this was one of my piviol childhood movies. And I always appreciated the decision to just have Jim's real dad flat out walk out on them. He didn't die or mysteriously vanished, he just...left. Felt far more relatable as a character background, something a lot of kids themselves may have sadly experienced.
@@matthewbaker1300 I feel it makes the impact stronger. because of this change wasn't simply alone because of a tragedy he has issues with having been abandoned too. this fear of someone consciously leaving you when you love them can definitely get someone to grow cynical about developing relationships since you wouldn't want to be betrayed again like that. it makes his relationship with the captain also constantly mirror this with when he finally finds someone he feels won't abandon him he gets stabbed in the back like that but despite all that he learns that people make mistakes as we are vulnerable and thus he still manages to forgive and the relationship grows deeper and more honest because of it. making it not only about not having a father figure but also about trauma from being abandoned makes me love the movie so so much more.
This gem of a movie did not deserve to be buried by Disney the way it was. Was so happy to hear David talk about his ace experiences and be able to relate, thank you guys for this lovely episode
Atlantis and Treasure Planet were criminally underrated! It was honestly ironic that Disney didn't believe in them since they were both coming of age style movies about characters trying to prove themselves to the world. They'll always hold a place in so many hearts!
@Grim_Bud I hope we get more movies in that style. I'm sure the writers of those movies would love to do it. Those stories were simple but they had so much heart.
This movie shouldn't have flopped. It was so freaking good and it was a beautiful film. A lot of kids could relate to Jim because a lot of us have had parents walk out on us. I love how Jim learns to care and to love the people he has in his life, rather than hang onto resentment and his fear of getting close to someone.
Bit of a tinfoil hat here, but I believe it was sabotaged because the big brains behind this movie were also behind the black cauldron, which was arguably Disney's biggest failure
Unfortunately Disney purposefully engineered that flop. It was the director's pet project that he had been hounding Disney to let him make for YEARS and then to prove a point they set its release date at the worst possible time so that it would flop and they could keep the director and lead artist under their heel... they also then used the technology used to make this movie to make Tarzan.
@@samwilde8311 and Black Cauldron didn't have to be a failure, it was another instance of far too much meddling that pretty much ruined an adaptation of one of my favourite book series. That said it still had some incredible work in it. Disney in the 80s and aughts sucked.
Guys I unfortunately grew up with an absent father who was always present. I grew up with low confidence. This movie, specifically when John silver says:”you’re gonna rattle the stars”. I always cry. I never understood why but I realize that these movies made me feel like I can do anything. The things my dad never told me growing up was said in this movie and that’s why I love it so much. I felt David when he covered that.
My dad was always there but hardly ever related. Hardly ever made an effort to. Growing up there was always some level of angst between us. He tried to provide but just didn't know how to connect. Yeah, I get that always-present but feels absent thing. It was only when I got older that I started to notice that the gap in connection was as frustrating to him as it was to me. I'm a dad now and it took that for me and him to finally get along. I don't know the full context of your case but I hope you get that moment one day, man.
That's exactly how I feel. Not only from having an absent father/parent... but just the absence of being encouraged and beleived in.. whether that's from the people who you wish would support you or from yourself... I tell myself what Silver tells Jim.. I beleive I can do anything because I have it in me if I keep at it.
“Just because you know where it’s going, doesn’t mean it’s not true and doesn’t mean it’s not powerful to watch.” I really like that. Also David is a lot of fun and just feels so sincere, please have him join you again.
There are so many things I love about this film. The top two I love are the main character has a parent who didn’t die, but just up and left him and his mother alone for twelve years. We’ve never seen that in Disney: both parents are either alive or dead. It really helps build Jim’s character because not only is he going through a typical teen rebellious phase but he doesn’t have a father figure to guide him, even though Doppler is often present but he’s more of a guide to Sarah. It’s not until Jim meets John Silver, who’s my second favorite part because yea he’s the villain and he and his crew destroy Jim’s house but he’s also the first disabled character we really see in animation. They address it really maturely and show while it can be difficult for him at times he’s still perfectly able to do things, especially using his mechanical arm to cook. Also he and Jim have their differences but he really comes through for him, practically giving up a fortune to save him, providing him with the funds to rebuild his home, and giving him advice no one’s ever given him. Their relationship is truly believable and so touching and I just cry seeing a kid who’s one mistake away from juvenile hall and who’s trying to prove himself to everyone really grow and become a man while there’s representation for the disabled community and single parent community and difficult adolescence
This is a thing I've always wondered: how exactly do characters with cyborg prosthetics represent the disabled community? John Silver has a peg-leg, sure, but his robot arm seems significantly more capable than a human's. To the point that, if it wasn't for his leg, John would be straight-up physically superior to a baseline human. Which hardly seems like it represents the experience of disabled people.
@@tbotalpha8133 I agree his disability is more sci-fi than normal disabilities but still to have a character that doesn’t have both arms is unique. Silver may be judged because people put cyborgs in the enemy section of humanity and don’t take a chance to get to know them. Jim judges him at first but later warms to him because he shows a kindness he’s never been given by an older male, at least outside of his family
As a person who grew up without a dad because he abandoned me, I always appreciated it finally shown in a Disney movie. Yes, there were lots of absent dads, but they always died. It was never their choice to leave.
I had an animator teacher who worked on this movie, and I remember seeing some of his pencil tests and being in awe of the emotional depth of the characters. This one is forever on my favorites list. 😊

Johns speech to Jim makes me cry as an adult, I’m currently taking a course on storyboarding and one of the assignments was to take a scene from a movie or show and break down the shots and what they convey to the audience. This is the scene I chose and it has seriously enlightened my understanding of how film communicates what isn’t said out loud in the story.
One thing that no one seems to mention is that after Jim got brought home by the cops and his mom is chewing him out, Jim just starts doing the dishes. It's a subtle thing, but it shows that he doesn't rebel over literally everything like a lot of Hollywood delinquents do. There's still a caring person underneath all of his...Jim-ness.
Yes, that, and what I also think, distraction for both himself and his mom. At least I have done that, there is some uncomfortable subject that needs addressing, but I don't feel like addressing it right then and there. So I avoid eye contact, also to hide my face and feelings I might show to the other person, and try to be like, "I'm doing something else right now, can we continue later, or never?" I wished they would have said something about that, and I'm glad someone else noticed it, too.
I always loved Scroop. Not only for his design and deep voice, but the way he is a challenge to Jim. I always saw that the agressive, bored and goalless way Jim is at the beginning of the movie is the same as Scroop behaves as an adult. It was that scene where Arrow (and later Silver) puts him to his place. The way he avoids eye contact and just pretends to not care for the person talking to him and when he is forced to, he goes on the offensive to push back. I felt, that Scroop is probably an abandoned kid like Jim. He just grew up with his mistrust and “me against the world” attitude. So for me, he shows Jim the person he can become if he does not build trust and friendships. By defeating him, Jim symbolically defeats his darker, selfish and agressive self.
Oh wow, I’d never thought of it like that before. I acknowledged that Scroop was an essential in creating conflict but I never found him that interesting till now. Whether the writers intended the symbolism or not, that’s a really insightful evaluation of the characters that creates an extra layer of depth to Jim’s development. This is one of my favourite films and it’s so cool to find more things to appreciate about it 😊
I loved this movie so much as a kid. I need to rewatch it again now as an adult. I agree with David. Sometimes all you need is someone to say "You'll make a difference."
I love that the scene is completely based in reality. I think that must be why it's so very well done and nails the emotions. From the IMDB trivia section: Animator Glen Keane drew from real life inspiration when animating Silver's "You've got the makings of greatness in you" speech to Jim. In his words, "I was seventeen years old and I had been fighting for a starting position on the football team as a halfback. And there was another player who was competing for the same position and he was a heck of a lot bigger and the head coach's favorite guy. I worked really hard and I got the starting position on this game and I was very proud of it. The game started and I played three plays and got the ball once. Then the head coach took me out and put the other guy in for the rest of the game. I never played again and I was crushed. As a seventeen-year-old, that's your life. You want your chance to shine. I had it but the coach took it away. "Afterwards in the parking lot, the assistant coach, Mickey Ryan, a great guy who spoke with his heart and always had a twinkle in his eye, put his hand on my shoulder and said, 'Glen, you're gonna do great things. You're gonna get that starting position. That wasn't right what happened.' And I could see that he really cared. There were tears in his eyes and I started to cry too. I lived that scene with Jim and Silver on the boat when Silver encourages Jim after a big setback. It was one of those things where you try to animate what you lived through and hope you can even get close to it."
This actually happened to me when I was twenty, I met a complete stranger while on jury duty and when that was over we had a conversation where he told me that “you be great no matter what you apply yourself to” and it shocked me so much that I froze in the parking lot. After that, I’ve gotten my associates degree and I’m just a few credits away from my bachelors (and making plans for my doctorate) and I’ve got a full time job in my field of study. All it needs is that one person to believe in you and say it with conviction to your face for you to believe it yourself.
This. I got this right before trying to apply to jobs right after having made a decision to specialize in something the school wasn't teaching, from a stranger at a job fair who didn't _need_ to say anything particularly nice to me. He just said that, while he didn't know much about this field, he could see that I had great potential in it. Those words were all I clung to for the next five months while I searched for a job, failing test after test and wondering if I really did pick a field I liked. I certainly wasn't as good as I "should" be, for someone looking for a job in that field. And then I got a job by someone who saw the same thing, the same potential. Its been almost two years now and I've been breaking through new skill ceilings in this art field every few months since the start and I've reached heights I could never even have dreamed of reaching before. There's still so much more to learn. There's still so much fun to be had in challenging myself against myself and coming out on top. And I don't think I would be where I am today if some random stranger hadn't been kind and said not only that I could do it, but that I could be someone great. (For context, I make VFX for video games :) At the time, my school didn't give any classes what-so-ever on this, everything I have today is self taught, and almost all technical knowledge that _should_ exist and have tutorial out there is not available on the internet. Everything I know to do now, every trick and loophole I've found in the node graphs I use to make what I need to is things I figured out on my own. Its terrifying and fun and I love it dearly)

This was my favorite movie next to Anastasia. Mainly cause I saw it with my dad and we geeked out at the sci fi pirate aesthetic. My mom was against taking me because it was a “boys” movie but my dad pushed to take me because Treasure Island was his favorite book growing up and he wanted to share that with me. He always encouraged my interests even when my mom didn’t understand them.
This movie is an absolute masterpiece and means SO MUCH to me. I was a 14 year old girl into goth fashion and I was heavily bullied. My mom was a cheerleader in high-school so she really didnt understand or approve of my likes and interests, so i related to Jim on feeling like a disappointment and an outcast. I also credit this movie with me deciding to take risks in life so that I can look back at life amd say I always took chances. Dont get me wrong, I had to learn when it was smart to take chances and what would lead to good things, but it lead me to not miss the chance to tell the man who became my husband that I was interested in him. Take chances and seek adventure, kids!
I absolutely love silver's line " I hope I'm there catching some light..." because that's exactly what Jim thinks his father didn't want and that he will never gonna get that support 🥺this movie always had hit in my heart, after studying animation hits harder 😭♥️.... Also :hi David🖤🤍💜✨

I didn’t watch the movie in English as a kid, and the English voice a lot higher and with unexpected accent. I guess I am just used to something different however, but I don’t know how his villain scenes worked

I love how when John Silver is deciding between saving the treasure or saving Jim, his robot/mechanical side is hanging onto the treasure, and his human side is reaching for Jim. I only just noticed the significance of that detail as Jono was describing how he was tapping into his humanity and that relationships are one of the things that make us human.
Disney really was trying to experiment during the late 90s to the early 2000s with their films, and it's a shame it didn't work out for them because this era was surprisingly good in a storytelling sense. Treasure Planet and Atlantis are among my absolute favorites, especially since they went that action/adventure direction. I really love the father/son relationship between Silver and Jim in this movie.
I’m a teacher and because this is my fav movie so obviously, I showed it to my group of kids over the summer. The first time that I watched it with them, a little boy was sitting in my lap and it got to the part where we find out that Jims dad left him. I looked down at the little boy, and he was silently crying in my arms which he has never done before. Later I asked him why that scene touched him so much and he said “well, Jim’s just like me…my dad left me too and I knew how sad he must have felt…” that was over 3 years ago now and I will never forget it. This just goes to show that not only physical representation of characters matters in media, situation representation, really fucking matters as well. That was the first time that little boy saw his situation, acknowledged in a movie that was made for him, and it was the first time that he didn’t feel alone. Not only that, but by the end of the film he got to watch Jim, not only overcome that situation that he was put in but thrive in spite of it which is so powerful especially for kids.
I'd say that situation representation might even matter more than physical representation. A character can be different from me in so many different ways, but if their struggle is similar to something I've once experienced, the story hits so much harder. It connects like two poles of a magnet, rather than like dust to a vacuum cleaner.
I really like how LJS is caught off guard when Jim just kinda slumps onto him. He's not really prepared for physical affection, but he reluctantly rolls with it and gives him a real hug. Nice characterization, showing his tender side for a moment.
I don't know how you guys always manage to put out a video that relates to my current struggles at the perfect time, but I'm not complaining. This movie hits me in the soul. My entirety growing up was wanting a place to fit amidst the trauma, bullying and negligence. Still afraid of being alone or abandoned in some way. This movie still rings true for me.
I love this film! I love how silver literally gave many pieces of himself for the treasure and still chooses to abandon it and save Jim. Also love how petty flint is, by trying to destroy anyone who would try to eventually take his treasure
This movie does hit so differently as an adult. Treasure Planet is like a reminder that you create your moment for greatness by being present not avoidant.
My husband's life and even his appearance is exactly of Jim Hawkin's (He even was very much into skateboarding in places he shouldn't like Jim lol). Growing up his father abandoned them for drugs and his second dad in his life betrayed him as well. This movie has always been one of my favorites but after meeting my husband and learning his story it hits so much deeper whenever I watch it. I love that you guys did a video on this bc it really touches on some real life hurts that people go through. Being abandoned and betrayed by your father is something very difficult to go through and I pray for anyone else out there who is struggling to feel like they matter bc of their fathers not caring for them. You matter very much and deserve to find happiness and deserve a loving family that stays by your side.
Too bad Disney 'forgot' this movie at the barbecue, see? It's so beautiful, so incredible, so futuristic. Certainly one of the best animations ever made. A space adventure far from the standards. It is wonderful in many ways. Classic Disney formula in one of the most beautiful animations. Inspiring and full of great messages, it has a fun beginning, middle and end. Fantasy most of the time and with beautiful songs.
I have two tattoos dedicated to this movie. Working with children in group homes and alternative schools and working with children on the spectrum, with a multitude of physical and mental disabilities and impairments, I honestly believe in growing up watching movies like this one, it lends to a deeper understanding that life is such a grey area, and it's the person on the inside, after being pushed away by society, that needs the help the most when they are at their lowest point, and this movie is an incredible representation of that ☺️❤️ I'm so glad you guys covered this one!!
I'm forever going to be mad at Disney for putting this up again HARRY FREAKING POTTER. This movie deserved to be seen, not forgotten. It's beautiful to look at, the world is rather intriguing. And the characters are so charming.
The fact that this came out the same time as the *second* Harry Potter movie blows my mind. Somehow, Treasure Planet feels like it was way earlier than HP. My sense of time is now in shambles.

and don't forget that also around that same time, lotr: the two towers (another immensely popular fantasy movie) premiered almost 2 weeks after treasure planet. sadly, treasure planet (a beautiful and revolutionary film) never had a chance. i can't believe disney marketinf was so naive thinking they could go against both lotr and hp. but i guess in the end it doesn't matter. what makes a film truly special isn't how much money it makes, but how it truly touches a person inside and the loved ones who they share the film with
This is one of my favorite movies, let alone Disney movies. I think it is a perfect movie for young men and boys specifically. Every young man wants adventure and glory, but not having a father figure to encourage you can put you on the wrong path. Jim’s theme, “I’m Still Here” perfectly captures that sentiment. Everyone may think you’re a nobody, but all you need is one person to see the worth in you and you can “rattle the stars.”
So very well said. And the song, "I'm Still Here" always gives me goosebumps because of its anthemic nature. This movie was so incredibly impactful for so many, many reasons. So glad it continues to be recognized for the great movie that it is!
@@rojaws1183 one reason it is so important for young men is that it is one of the only coming of age stories for men that doesn't include a romantic interest for the male lead. At no point does Jim tie his worth to having a partner.
While your not wrong, As a girl who grew up with this movie, rewatching it over and over, I loved it more than my brothers. I wanted adventure and someone to encourage me like that. I didn't really have much of anyone seeing me like that, and this movie made me feel special. Sure, the main story may have male characters, but i feel like it speaks to anyone who needs to hear that. All kids need a good Parental figure who sees worth in you.
As an animation student im amazed by the fact: Long John has that gear near to his ear always spinning. Like... ALWAYS. And it keeps its speed in every angle... Its fantastic. Also, when i was a little girl, i was really impressed by Amielia's character. A female lied, who knows, how to get things done. She was kind of a role model of mine for years.
I literally watched this movie 2 days before this came out with my friends. Not one of us didn't cry when he told Jim he'd rattle the stars. I've loved Treasure Planet since I was 6 years old and I'm so glad you guys did it justice. Special thanks to David from a fellow ace person. You made me cry with Alan with that last message. This is one of my favourite Disney movies (together with “Atlantis”) that doesn't have classic princess tale as its inspiration. They are both so underrated! 😩 David is so funny! 🤗
I think it is so important that David is able to share his story with his sexuality! As another asexual biromantic person who also has grown up in a very religious house hold it really means something to hear similar experiences from other people like you. Especially with Asexuality you can often feel so alone but knowing there are other people like you really is a comfort. I really admire that he is able to share his experience and share it with the world, thank you! Hearing that really brightens my day!
I was so happy David was here. I didn´t know you had someone on your team who is ace. I am genderfluid, ace and panromantic and people have such a hard time understanding that, so him talking about his experience made me stupidly happy. And the remark about the genuine compliment is very true. Considering this, Nimona would be a great film to react to. That movie have me so much joy the last few weeks. And there are so many more important messages in there next to the queer ones - mostly about changing and challenging the system that upholds oppression instead of the "we have a few bad apples" argument. And I loved Treasure Planet as a teenager. I had read Treasure Island as a kid and really liked it but I preferred this version because I am a sucker for it. The other version I loved was the Muppets "Treasure Island" because....well, Tim Curry was one of my first crushes. Clue, Rocky Horror and Treasure Island made me love him so much.
My kid identifies as all the same things (although they are still unsure about the gender fluid). They are doing pretty well with it but as a demisexual myself, I know it is going to be tough at times in a culture that is obsessed with sexualizing every relationship. I am glad I had a friend in college that I suspect was ace and arrow, so I could know that this is not an impossibility. I really wish it wasn't so popular to change ace characters and historical figures into gay characters. While gay representation is important, so is asexual representation and it ends up feeling like asexual erasure. Have you heard of The Deed of Paksenarrion? If you are into reading and fantasy, it is a trilogy about an all around well developed female hero who is ace.

The score is just devastatingly beautiful. The themes are in a word, perfect. The marriage of that with brilliant delivery from the voice actors and great detail in the animation makes it one of the best films Disney ever released.
YES! This is my favorite Disney movie because I relate to Jim so much. My father left our family when I was quite young, so his situation resonates with me. And the song "I'm Still Here" is a banger! This film is so underappreciated! I'm very thrilled to watch this episode!
Treasure Planet is the most underrated Disney film of history. That is what I’ve been thinking since I was kid, although I know a lot of people share the love. This, however, marks another great moment for Cinema Therapy, and me. As always, keep up the good job, people!
This is one of my favorite films. The scene where Jim and John Silver are talking after Jim thought he was at fault for losing a crew member and John is telling him about how amazing he is and could be, I always cry because as a first generation son of an immigrant family, I never really heard my father say anything to the like to me. Hearing those words was something I needed growing up and even now when I'm almost 30.
This movie deserves to be celebrated. Has so many wish fulfilling moments but doesn’t shy away from harsh realities. Great representation and genuine emotion. Love it so much.
Dont forget jims theme in the opening surfing scene. Not just a banger song but really lays out jims feeling of being an outcast and need of a father figure. That scene really resonated with a misunderstood younger me.
Its been a very long time since I watched this movie for the first time. Getting to hear "You're gonna rattle the stars." and finding myself tearing up was a wild moment. Thanks you guys for being awesome and putting out content on some of the best animated movies in my childhood.
I wanted you guys to do it FOR SO LONG. Jim and Long John are such interesting duo and characters respectively to pick apart. Jim is this lost, angsty teenager but you can see he is still a good person whose first instinct when faced with danger and people being hurt is to help them and do the right thing. I also applaud the writers for breaking the mold with Jim's father actually, honest to god WALKING OUT ON HIS FAMILY instead of like being a perfect father, who just died like all other Disney parents. Like...Jim's issues aren't 'it was nobodies fault. it was out of anyone's control'. Because while sometimes it is the case, other times people are left behind and abandoned by choice. Sometimes people have absent parents who don't really want a family. and I'm happy that this movie acknowleged that.

This film was my early childhood. Back when VHS tapes still existed this was the one I watched the most. I never replaced it on DVD or anything and so 15 or so years later when I rewatched it I can't explain the overwhelming level of emotion it hit me with. I think I resonated with it without realising as a child because of Jim's character also having his father walk out on him. Luckily I had a great step father who stepped in to fill that gap, that isn't to say I made things easy for him as an angsty and sometimes distant teenager. It's a really heart warming tale and I think very healthy film with regards to masculinity. One of the few films I think would benefit from a modern remake. It's a message that is more important than ever for boys.
The thing David said at the end about telling someone something they need to hear/compliment in a uniquely true way is so absolutely true. My love language is words of affirmation, and i see when the words i say makes a person sit up taller and starts to see their worth through my eyes as something that is real.
This movie did very well in Sweden when it came out. It seems like the rest of the world really slept on it. Milennials my age (early 90's) mostly have fond thoughts of this movie. The voice acting of John Silver in Swedish just pierces your heart.

I’m going to be honest a few years ago(~2015-17) I thought nonbinary aromantic and asexual were just people wanting to be unique in the dumbest way possible. mainly I lumped them in with people trying to cosplay/larp a sexual orientation that was just nonsensical. like the memed i sexual identify as an apache helicopters un-ironically. Now I know a good deal more about both and understand what they are thanks to following and watching a few lgbt creators like not so average fan girl. So a few years ago I would have likely thought you were just an uninteresting nobody who wanted to be unique co-opting the lgbt community. now it’s no longer relevant or proper to believe that sentiment
@@officialmilkman491 for me my brain is fucked in a way that i have to be able to understand a subject that goes against what i know. and as you might've guessed from my comment they were basically never properly explained/defined until i started watching elijah aka nsafg react to the owl house(believe it was her grom reaction because i remembered that she started reacting late season 1 onward. i was wrong she started reacting the episode after enchanting grom fright the grom reaction happened 2 years later). with her being a natural lgbt dictionary during the videos helped give merit to the explanation of non-binary(though i still do not have a full grasp of the term) and aromantic/asexual. though biromantic is a new one but thanks to said human dictionary i have a general idea what it could mean so that helps
I adore that when Silver is struggling to choose between the treasure and saving Jim, his two halves represent who he could be. The treasure is closest to his cold and distant robotic parts, while what's left of his humanity and love is closest to Jim. Like, he's not just choosing who/what to save, but he's deciding once and for all what kind of person he is and what really matters to him. I'm not wording this well, but I just adore this movie and how it shows Silver and Jim grow together.
My favorite touch to this animation is Silver's eyes. When he's acting out of self-interest, lying or scheming to cause harm to others, his robot eye is front and center. When he's being sincere and caring for Jim, his human eye is more prominent. Just one of the many brilliant touches that make this the most inexplicable bomb in recent Disney memory. It's better than most of the Renaissance films, but is widely forgotten. One of my favorite movies, period. Also, "Dang it, Jim. I'm an astronomer, not a doctor! I mean, I am a doctor, but I'm not that kind of doctor. I have a doctorate, it's not the same thing. You can't help people with a doctorate. You just sit there and you're useless!"
This movie makes me grin, laugh and cry every time I watch it. Definitely a lifetime favorite. My ear caught when Alan said 'Tiberius', so I double checked Jim's middle name and found 'Pleiades' which winds up being a constellation. Makes sense!
This movie is criminally underrated, it's easily in my top 5 favourite movies! 😀I never noticed the subtle changes in Jims character, it's mind blowing what the animators did.
This movie has never gotten the recognition is so rightly deserves. It's such a beautiful adaptation of 'Treasure Island' with such a deep heart to it. The writing, the music (both score and pop/contemporary by 'The Googoo Dolls') was so perfect.
I LOVED this movie as a kid. I wanted a morph of my own, I wanted to have that solar surfboard from the original scene and looking back on it now brings me to tears. It makes me realize this movie shaped my eagerness for adventure and the friends I have now. My friends emulate these characters so damn much it's crazy.

It deserves all of the praise for being such a timeless story about growth, and it's such a tragedy how Disney higher ups had zero faith in it from pretty much the very start. Also, "I'm Still Here" by the Goo Goo Dolls is low-key one of my favorite Disney songs of all time alongside all of the Tarzan's ones.
When I was a kid, my grandmother told me she had literal dreams of me doing amazing things and meeting good people, didn’t know when or how but I was successful somewhat. However the main thing is that she saw me in her dream helping people no matter what happen and it made me happy. In reality I do love helping people, it makes me feel good even when I’m feel like I’m at my lowest and just wanna break down. It makes me wanna keep going.She said I was going to do great things one day. Sadly she passed, but I still think about her to this day. My name is also James and everytime I see this movie or any Disney movie growing up it always found someway to make me cry. Hearing those same words, “ I see greatness in you”, hearing it from someone else hits different from yourself believing it. To this day, I live to see her dream come true and make her proud❤

Gasped and said 'oh my gosh!' aloud when I saw this video pop up. Absolutely so excited to see y'all dig into this absolute gem. Jim and Silver are such fantastic and flawed and believable characters and I love this movie so so much.
This movie really melts my heart on a different level... especially because I've been in Jim's shoes, abandoned by my father, and found a parent figure in a friend just like Silver, who sadly passed away a few years ago... I cry everytime I hear that song.

I hadn't ever seen this movie until just a few months ago when my husband insisted i watch it. I fell in love with it immediately! So many sweet relationships, and an absolutely amazing story!

I've not clicked on one of these videos faster! This was one of my favorite movies growing up and it always a shock to me that it was mostly ignored and forgotten. The animation, the framing, the story, all so wonderful.
This is one of my FAVORITE movies all time. It’s visuals are amazing, the soundtrack is fantastic, the story is brilliant, and the writing and messages in this film is just a perfect example of how to implement morality into cinema. Fantastic film
Yes I have been waiting for this one to come out because I have always liked this movie. I especially love the found father/son dynamic of Silver and Jim in the movie.
I’m sure I speak for soooo many others when I say thank you for your constant and consistent acknowledgement of the asexual and aromantic communities. This is one of the few channels (and places in general) that I feel seen and heard. Love you Jono for bringing us into the light constantly and love you David for being such a positive force that you inspired him to do so!

I had the exact same reaction to Silver's line at the very end of the movie, I find myself tearing up every time I think about the emotion in Silver's voice and the look on Jim's face 😭
I watched this movie so much growing up. Jim’s character spoke to me so much, especially his relationship with John. Never really felt there was anyone on my side growing up, and my father wasn’t really around. The idea of having someone at my back no matter what, always encouraging me and spurring me toward my dreams, became a constant fantasy of mine, but Iittle kid me was also terrified that no one would support me for a reason that wasn’t selfish. This movie may have instilled that warning in me, but at the same time, it helped me to see the possibility of redemption in everyone, no matter how messed up they are. No matter how many mistakes they’ve made. Flash forward to now, I have a pretty good relationship with my dad, and his promise to me is that he’ll support me in anything I choose to do as long as it makes me happy. So far, so good :)
This is such an underrated film. I'm always shocked it didn't do well in the box office because I remember seeing it three times in theatres. Also, David's "you have to be you, loudly, wherever you are" is beautiful!
"I will make this as mono-syllabic as possible; I do not much care for the crew YOU hired." It's such a good line. This movie is so under-rated, I saw it in theatres and mourn the loss of traditional animation from Disney.
I know Disney didn't make this movie easy for the creators, but I hope they know how loved it is by so many. There are so many different ways this movie can hit you hard.
Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver, both developed a special connection! Silver became like the father, which Jim had lost. Jim of course became like the son, which Silver had never had. Loved that surrogate dynamic in this movie!❤
It took me several weeks to watch this episode because I knew I'd get so emotional. Sure enough! Everything you all touched on I connected with so much. This movie resonated with me so much as a kid. The I'm Still Here part of the movie always made me ugly cry as a kid, still does. The "rattle the stars moment" is one of the most poignant, vulnerable moments I've ever seen in a movie. The music, the expressions on the characters...it just gets me every time. All the awesome facts about the visuals were amazing!! I'm in awe of how much they got across through those alone! That was so cool!! Thank you so much for bringing attention to one of my favorite Disney movies. This is such an underrated gem of a film.

I was OBSESSED with this film when I was a kid. I had the art book that I looked at every day and studied all the designs of the monsters and worlds. It's such a special film that helped kindle my love of adventure as a child. ❤

Director's Note: Did you notice that Silver is holding the boat with the treasure with his mechanical arm and reaching out to save Jim with his organic side. It is a visual metaphor of the character himself and the moral choice between his two sides. He is a character that has literally sacrificed parts of his humanity in pursuit of the treasure, but when it matters he chooses otherwise.😀

@@felixhenson9926 not quite, its not the amputation itself, the arm and his other modifications are the consequences of his greed, and therefore a representation of his greed itself. you can have an amputation through no fault of your own and overwhelmingly that's the majority case, it just so happens that for specifically Silver, he got injured chasing after treasure.
@@itspice8737 In this movie specifically Silver has a line when talking about the cybernetics where he says that he sacrificed some things chasing a dream. (dream is implied as the treasure from knowledge the viewer has, and it is also delivered in a way that makes it seem that the arm and leg werent all that was sacrificed)

Captain Amelia was really inspiring to me as a kid because I think she was the first female character I'd seen that was a leader and everyone just accepted that she was the captain without her gender being a barrier. The pirates didn't turn against her because she was female, they just wanted the treasure. Like, her ability was never in question, she was strong and assertive and proud of herself, but also pretty and kind... and none of it got questioned. She didn't have to defend who she was. It meant so much to me as a kid.
Yes! I love Amelia! I've also always loved how sassy and quick-witted she is. I'm also pretty certain I learned several larger fancy words from her. I love when kids movies don't dumb things down and use more complex vocabulary.

Disney's experimental era is, to this day, my favorite. Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Brother Bear, and Dinosaurs were/are a pivotal moment to me, and anytime I'm feeling like life has kicked me to the ground, these movies help inspire me to get up. 15/10 great movie.

Brother "godt damn" Bear is an underrated gem of the highest order. I will die on that hill, it knows what it's core lesson is, makes that point marvelously, and has great humor for good measure. And Phil Collins. I like that soundtrack almost just as much as Tarzan.
I was about 4 years old when I saw Dinosaur the first time on VHS and it was my introduction to dinosaurs and I loved dinosaurs ever since. I had dinosaur themed birthday parties twice in a row when I was 5 and 6.

Yes! This! And the fact that they're all kind of looked down on by most critics as some of the lower ranking Disney films is INSANE to me. They're so unique! And beautiful!
They didn't mention that Jim's father didn't die. He abandoned his wife and child. It was really important to Jim to find a father figure who wouldn't abandon him. That's why it meant so much to him when John chose to save him at the end.

If a sequel ever happened I would have it take place years later Jim is grown up & he sees his father again & his dad now wants to be a part of his life but Jim is furious & tells his dad where to step off. His dad's excuse is he wasn't ready to be a father & he regrets marrying too soon which angers Jim even more but Jim tells him he had a father figure who helped him become the man he is today. At the end of the movie Jim's dad dies & Jim has made peace with it he goes on to do great things (Jim's mom is still alive by the way & she too is angry her husband left her).

Growing up, this was one of my piviol childhood movies. And I always appreciated the decision to just have Jim's real dad flat out walk out on them. He didn't die or mysteriously vanished, he just...left. Felt far more relatable as a character background, something a lot of kids themselves may have sadly experienced.
My dad did that emotionally after my mum left him (and took us with her)

@@matthewbaker1300 I feel it makes the impact stronger. because of this change wasn't simply alone because of a tragedy he has issues with having been abandoned too. this fear of someone consciously leaving you when you love them can definitely get someone to grow cynical about developing relationships since you wouldn't want to be betrayed again like that. it makes his relationship with the captain also constantly mirror this with when he finally finds someone he feels won't abandon him he gets stabbed in the back like that but despite all that he learns that people make mistakes as we are vulnerable and thus he still manages to forgive and the relationship grows deeper and more honest because of it. making it not only about not having a father figure but also about trauma from being abandoned makes me love the movie so so much more.
This gem of a movie did not deserve to be buried by Disney the way it was. Was so happy to hear David talk about his ace experiences and be able to relate, thank you guys for this lovely episode
Atlantis and Treasure Planet were criminally underrated! It was honestly ironic that Disney didn't believe in them since they were both coming of age style movies about characters trying to prove themselves to the world. They'll always hold a place in so many hearts!

This movie shouldn't have flopped. It was so freaking good and it was a beautiful film.
A lot of kids could relate to Jim because a lot of us have had parents walk out on us. I love how Jim learns to care and to love the people he has in his life, rather than hang onto resentment and his fear of getting close to someone.
Bit of a tinfoil hat here, but I believe it was sabotaged because the big brains behind this movie were also behind the black cauldron, which was arguably Disney's biggest failure
@@samwilde8311 No tinfoil here. It was confirmed that the movie was used as a scapegoat to shut down Disneys 2D animations studios.
Unfortunately Disney purposefully engineered that flop. It was the director's pet project that he had been hounding Disney to let him make for YEARS and then to prove a point they set its release date at the worst possible time so that it would flop and they could keep the director and lead artist under their heel... they also then used the technology used to make this movie to make Tarzan.

Guys I unfortunately grew up with an absent father who was always present. I grew up with low confidence. This movie, specifically when John silver says:”you’re gonna rattle the stars”. I always cry. I never understood why but I realize that these movies made me feel like I can do anything. The things my dad never told me growing up was said in this movie and that’s why I love it so much. I felt David when he covered that.

My dad was always there but hardly ever related. Hardly ever made an effort to. Growing up there was always some level of angst between us. He tried to provide but just didn't know how to connect. Yeah, I get that always-present but feels absent thing.
It was only when I got older that I started to notice that the gap in connection was as frustrating to him as it was to me.
I'm a dad now and it took that for me and him to finally get along.
I don't know the full context of your case but I hope you get that moment one day, man.
That's exactly how I feel. Not only from having an absent father/parent... but just the absence of being encouraged and beleived in.. whether that's from the people who you wish would support you or from yourself... I tell myself what Silver tells Jim.. I beleive I can do anything because I have it in me if I keep at it.

There are so many things I love about this film. The top two I love are the main character has a parent who didn’t die, but just up and left him and his mother alone for twelve years. We’ve never seen that in Disney: both parents are either alive or dead. It really helps build Jim’s character because not only is he going through a typical teen rebellious phase but he doesn’t have a father figure to guide him, even though Doppler is often present but he’s more of a guide to Sarah. It’s not until Jim meets John Silver, who’s my second favorite part because yea he’s the villain and he and his crew destroy Jim’s house but he’s also the first disabled character we really see in animation. They address it really maturely and show while it can be difficult for him at times he’s still perfectly able to do things, especially using his mechanical arm to cook. Also he and Jim have their differences but he really comes through for him, practically giving up a fortune to save him, providing him with the funds to rebuild his home, and giving him advice no one’s ever given him. Their relationship is truly believable and so touching and I just cry seeing a kid who’s one mistake away from juvenile hall and who’s trying to prove himself to everyone really grow and become a man while there’s representation for the disabled community and single parent community and difficult adolescence
This is a thing I've always wondered: how exactly do characters with cyborg prosthetics represent the disabled community? John Silver has a peg-leg, sure, but his robot arm seems significantly more capable than a human's. To the point that, if it wasn't for his leg, John would be straight-up physically superior to a baseline human. Which hardly seems like it represents the experience of disabled people.
@@tbotalpha8133 I agree his disability is more sci-fi than normal disabilities but still to have a character that doesn’t have both arms is unique. Silver may be judged because people put cyborgs in the enemy section of humanity and don’t take a chance to get to know them. Jim judges him at first but later warms to him because he shows a kindness he’s never been given by an older male, at least outside of his family
As a person who grew up without a dad because he abandoned me, I always appreciated it finally shown in a Disney movie. Yes, there were lots of absent dads, but they always died. It was never their choice to leave.

Johns speech to Jim makes me cry as an adult, I’m currently taking a course on storyboarding and one of the assignments was to take a scene from a movie or show and break down the shots and what they convey to the audience. This is the scene I chose and it has seriously enlightened my understanding of how film communicates what isn’t said out loud in the story.
One thing that no one seems to mention is that after Jim got brought home by the cops and his mom is chewing him out, Jim just starts doing the dishes. It's a subtle thing, but it shows that he doesn't rebel over literally everything like a lot of Hollywood delinquents do. There's still a caring person underneath all of his...Jim-ness.
Yes, that, and what I also think, distraction for both himself and his mom. At least I have done that, there is some uncomfortable subject that needs addressing, but I don't feel like addressing it right then and there. So I avoid eye contact, also to hide my face and feelings I might show to the other person, and try to be like, "I'm doing something else right now, can we continue later, or never?" I wished they would have said something about that, and I'm glad someone else noticed it, too.
I always loved Scroop.
Not only for his design and deep voice, but the way he is a challenge to Jim.
I always saw that the agressive, bored and goalless way Jim is at the beginning of the movie is the same as Scroop behaves as an adult. It was that scene where Arrow (and later Silver) puts him to his place. The way he avoids eye contact and just pretends to not care for the person talking to him and when he is forced to, he goes on the offensive to push back. I felt, that Scroop is probably an abandoned kid like Jim. He just grew up with his mistrust and “me against the world” attitude.
So for me, he shows Jim the person he can become if he does not build trust and friendships. By defeating him, Jim symbolically defeats his darker, selfish and agressive self.
Oh wow, I’d never thought of it like that before. I acknowledged that Scroop was an essential in creating conflict but I never found him that interesting till now. Whether the writers intended the symbolism or not, that’s a really insightful evaluation of the characters that creates an extra layer of depth to Jim’s development. This is one of my favourite films and it’s so cool to find more things to appreciate about it 😊
Btw the guy who played Scroop is also Death in Darksiders 2

I loved this movie so much as a kid. I need to rewatch it again now as an adult. I agree with David. Sometimes all you need is someone to say "You'll make a difference."
I love that the scene is completely based in reality. I think that must be why it's so very well done and nails the emotions.

In his words, "I was seventeen years old and I had been fighting for a starting position on the football team as a halfback. And there was another player who was competing for the same position and he was a heck of a lot bigger and the head coach's favorite guy. I worked really hard and I got the starting position on this game and I was very proud of it. The game started and I played three plays and got the ball once. Then the head coach took me out and put the other guy in for the rest of the game. I never played again and I was crushed. As a seventeen-year-old, that's your life. You want your chance to shine. I had it but the coach took it away.
"Afterwards in the parking lot, the assistant coach, Mickey Ryan, a great guy who spoke with his heart and always had a twinkle in his eye, put his hand on my shoulder and said, 'Glen, you're gonna do great things. I lived that scene with Jim and Silver on the boat when Silver encourages Jim after a big setback. It was one of those things where you try to animate what you lived through and hope you can even get close to it."

This actually happened to me when I was twenty, I met a complete stranger while on jury duty and when that was over we had a conversation where he told me that “you be great no matter what you apply yourself to” and it shocked me so much that I froze in the parking lot. After that, I’ve gotten my associates degree and I’m just a few credits away from my bachelors (and making plans for my doctorate) and I’ve got a full time job in my field of study. All it needs is that one person to believe in you and say it with conviction to your face for you to believe it yourself.
This. I got this right before trying to apply to jobs right after having made a decision to specialize in something the school wasn't teaching, from a stranger at a job fair who didn't _need_ to say anything particularly nice to me. He just said that, while he didn't know much about this field, he could see that I had great potential in it.
Those words were all I clung to for the next five months while I searched for a job, failing test after test and wondering if I really did pick a field I liked. I certainly wasn't as good as I "should" be, for someone looking for a job in that field. And then I got a job by someone who saw the same thing, the same potential.
Its been almost two years now and I've been breaking through new skill ceilings in this art field every few months since the start and I've reached heights I could never even have dreamed of reaching before. There's still so much more to learn. There's still so much fun to be had in challenging myself against myself and coming out on top.
And I don't think I would be where I am today if some random stranger hadn't been kind and said not only that I could do it, but that I could be someone great.
(For context, I make VFX for video games :) At the time, my school didn't give any classes what-so-ever on this, everything I have today is self taught, and almost all technical knowledge that _should_ exist and have tutorial out there is not available on the internet. Everything I know to do now, every trick and loophole I've found in the node graphs I use to make what I need to is things I figured out on my own. Its terrifying and fun and I love it dearly)

This was my favorite movie next to Anastasia. Mainly cause I saw it with my dad and we geeked out at the sci fi pirate aesthetic. My mom was against taking me because it was a “boys” movie but my dad pushed to take me because Treasure Island was his favorite book growing up and he wanted to share that with me. He always encouraged my interests even when my mom didn’t understand them.

This movie is an absolute masterpiece and means SO MUCH to me. I was a 14 year old girl into goth fashion and I was heavily bullied. My mom was a cheerleader in high-school so she really didnt understand or approve of my likes and interests, so i related to Jim on feeling like a disappointment and an outcast. I also credit this movie with me deciding to take risks in life so that I can look back at life amd say I always took chances. Dont get me wrong, I had to learn when it was smart to take chances and what would lead to good things, but it lead me to not miss the chance to tell the man who became my husband that I was interested in him. Take chances and seek adventure, kids!

I love how when John Silver is deciding between saving the treasure or saving Jim, his robot/mechanical side is hanging onto the treasure, and his human side is reaching for Jim. I only just noticed the significance of that detail as Jono was describing how he was tapping into his humanity and that relationships are one of the things that make us human.
Disney really was trying to experiment during the late 90s to the early 2000s with their films, and it's a shame it didn't work out for them because this era was surprisingly good in a storytelling sense. Treasure Planet and Atlantis are among my absolute favorites, especially since they went that action/adventure direction. I really love the father/son relationship between Silver and Jim in this movie.
I’m a teacher and because this is my fav movie so obviously, I showed it to my group of kids over the summer. The first time that I watched it with them, a little boy was sitting in my lap and it got to the part where we find out that Jims dad left him. I looked down at the little boy, and he was silently crying in my arms which he has never done before. Later I asked him why that scene touched him so much and he said “well, Jim’s just like me…my dad left me too and I knew how sad he must have felt…” that was over 3 years ago now and I will never forget it. This just goes to show that not only physical representation of characters matters in media, situation representation, really fucking matters as well. That was the first time that little boy saw his situation, acknowledged in a movie that was made for him, and it was the first time that he didn’t feel alone. Not only that, but by the end of the film he got to watch Jim, not only overcome that situation that he was put in but thrive in spite of it which is so powerful especially for kids.
I'd say that situation representation might even matter more than physical representation. A character can be different from me in so many different ways, but if their struggle is similar to something I've once experienced, the story hits so much harder. It connects like two poles of a magnet, rather than like dust to a vacuum cleaner.
I really like how LJS is caught off guard when Jim just kinda slumps onto him. He's not really prepared for physical affection, but he reluctantly rolls with it and gives him a real hug. Nice characterization, showing his tender side for a moment.
I don't know how you guys always manage to put out a video that relates to my current struggles at the perfect time, but I'm not complaining. Thank you for these reactions, they are literal therapy for me when I need it most. Keep doing what you're doing! PS. Treasure Planet is so criminally underrated and is one of my fave Disney movies! This movie hits me in the soul. My entirety growing up was wanting a place to fit amidst the trauma, bullying and negligence. Still afraid of being alone or abandoned in some way. This movie still rings true for me.

This movie does hit so differently as an adult. Treasure Planet is like a reminder that you create your moment for greatness by being present not avoidant.
My husband's life and even his appearance is exactly of Jim Hawkin's (He even was very much into skateboarding in places he shouldn't like Jim lol). Growing up his father abandoned them for drugs and his second dad in his life betrayed him as well. This movie has always been one of my favorites but after meeting my husband and learning his story it hits so much deeper whenever I watch it. I love that you guys did a video on this bc it really touches on some real life hurts that people go through. Being abandoned and betrayed by your father is something very difficult to go through and I pray for anyone else out there who is struggling to feel like they matter bc of their fathers not caring for them. You matter very much and deserve to find happiness and deserve a loving family that stays by your side.

Too bad Disney 'forgot' this movie at the barbecue, see? It's so beautiful, so incredible, so futuristic. Certainly one of the best animations ever made. A space adventure far from the standards.
It is wonderful in many ways. Classic Disney formula in one of the most beautiful animations. Inspiring and full of great messages, it has a fun beginning, middle and end. Fantasy most of the time and with beautiful songs.
Let's hope they never make a live action remake

I have two tattoos dedicated to this movie. Working with children in group homes and alternative schools and working with children on the spectrum, with a multitude of physical and mental disabilities and impairments, I honestly believe in growing up watching movies like this one, it lends to a deeper understanding that life is such a grey area, and it's the person on the inside, after being pushed away by society, that needs the help the most when they are at their lowest point, and this movie is an incredible representation of that ☺️❤️ I'm so glad you guys covered this one!!

The fact that this came out the same time as the *second* Harry Potter movie blows my mind. Somehow, Treasure Planet feels like it was way earlier than HP. My sense of time is now in shambles.

and don't forget that also around that same time, lotr: the two towers (another immensely popular fantasy movie) premiered almost 2 weeks after treasure planet. sadly, treasure planet (a beautiful and revolutionary film) never had a chance. i can't believe disney marketinf was so naive thinking they could go against both lotr and hp. but i guess in the end it doesn't matter. what makes a film truly special isn't how much money it makes, but how it truly touches a person inside and the loved ones who they share the film with
This is one of my favorite movies, let alone Disney movies. I think it is a perfect movie for young men and boys specifically. Every young man wants adventure and glory, but not having a father figure to encourage you can put you on the wrong path. Jim’s theme, “I’m Still Here” perfectly captures that sentiment. Everyone may think you’re a nobody, but all you need is one person to see the worth in you and you can “rattle the stars.”
So very well said. And the song, "I'm Still Here" always gives me goosebumps because of its anthemic nature. This movie was so incredibly impactful for so many, many reasons. So glad it continues to be recognized for the great movie that it is!

While your not wrong, As a girl who grew up with this movie, rewatching it over and over, I loved it more than my brothers. I wanted adventure and someone to encourage me like that. I didn't really have much of anyone seeing me like that, and this movie made me feel special. Sure, the main story may have male characters, but i feel like it speaks to anyone who needs to hear that. All kids need a good Parental figure who sees worth in you.
Silver's speech to Jim is the only fatherly disney moment to compete with Mufasa's heart to heart with Simba.
As an animation student im amazed by the fact: Long John has that gear near to his ear always spinning. Like... ALWAYS. And it keeps its speed in every angle... Its fantastic.
Also, when i was a little girl, i was really impressed by Amielia's character. A female lied, who knows, how to get things done. She was kind of a role model of mine for years.
I literally watched this movie 2 days before this came out with my friends. Not one of us didn't cry when he told Jim he'd rattle the stars. I think it is so important that David is able to share his story with his sexuality! As another asexual biromantic person who also has grown up in a very religious house hold it really means something to hear similar experiences from other people like you. Especially with Asexuality you can often feel so alone but knowing there are other people like you really is a comfort. I really admire that he is able to share his experience and share it with the world, thank you! Hearing that really brightens my day!
I was so happy David was here. I didn´t know you had someone on your team who is ace. I am genderfluid, ace and panromantic and people have such a hard time understanding that, so him talking about his experience made me stupidly happy. And the remark about the genuine compliment is very true.
Considering this, Nimona would be a great film to react to. That movie have me so much joy the last few weeks. And there are so many more important messages in there next to the queer ones - mostly about changing and challenging the system that upholds oppression instead of the "we have a few bad apples" argument.
And I loved Treasure Planet as a teenager. I had read Treasure Island as a kid and really liked it but I preferred this version because I am a sucker for it. The other version I loved was the Muppets "Treasure Island" because....well, Tim Curry was one of my first crushes. Clue, Rocky Horror and Treasure Island made me love him so much.

My kid identifies as all the same things (although they are still unsure about the gender fluid). They are doing pretty well with it but as a demisexual myself, I know it is going to be tough at times in a culture that is obsessed with sexualizing every relationship. I am glad I had a friend in college that I suspect was ace and arrow, so I could know that this is not an impossibility.
I really wish it wasn't so popular to change ace characters and historical figures into gay characters. While gay representation is important, so is asexual representation and it ends up feeling like asexual erasure.
Have you heard of The Deed of Paksenarrion? If you are into reading and fantasy, it is a trilogy about an all around well developed female hero who is ace.

The score is just devastatingly beautiful. The themes are in a word, perfect. The marriage of that with brilliant delivery from the voice actors and great detail in the animation makes it one of the best films Disney ever released.
YES! This is my favorite Disney movie because I relate to Jim so much. My father left our family when I was quite young, so his situation resonates with me. And the song "I'm Still Here" is a banger! This film is so underappreciated! I'm very thrilled to watch this episode!

This is one of my favorite films. The scene where Jim and John Silver are talking after Jim thought he was at fault for losing a crew member and John is telling him about how amazing he is and could be, I always cry because as a first generation son of an immigrant family, I never really heard my father say anything to the like to me. Hearing those words was something I needed growing up and even now when I'm almost 30.
This movie deserves to be celebrated. Has so many wish fulfilling moments but doesn’t shy away from harsh realities. Great representation and genuine emotion. Love it so much.
Dont forget jims theme in the opening surfing scene. Not just a banger song but really lays out jims feeling of being an outcast and need of a father figure. That scene really resonated with a misunderstood younger me.

Its been a very long time since I watched this movie for the first time. Getting to hear "You're gonna rattle the stars." and finding myself tearing up was a wild moment. Thanks you guys for being awesome and putting out content on some of the best animated movies in my childhood.
I wanted you guys to do it FOR SO LONG. Jim and Long John are such interesting duo and characters respectively to pick apart. Jim is this lost, angsty teenager but you can see he is still a good person whose first instinct when faced with danger and people being hurt is to help them and do the right thing. I also applaud the writers for breaking the mold with Jim's father actually, honest to god WALKING OUT ON HIS FAMILY instead of like being a perfect father, who just died like all other Disney parents. Like...Jim's issues aren't 'it was nobodies fault. it was out of anyone's control'. Because while sometimes it is the case, other times people are left behind and abandoned by choice. Sometimes people have absent parents who don't really want a family. and I'm happy that this movie acknowleged that.

Ugh, I love that you guys covered a largely underrated movie. This is such a wonderful experience thank you so much you three.
Seriously, one of Disney's best but they never gave it the love it deserved to really shine in the public eye.
This film was my early childhood. Back when VHS tapes still existed this was the one I watched the most. I never replaced it on DVD or anything and so 15 or so years later when I rewatched it I can't explain the overwhelming level of emotion it hit me with. I think I resonated with it without realising as a child because of Jim's character also having his father walk out on him. Luckily I had a great step father who stepped in to fill that gap, that isn't to say I made things easy for him as an angsty and sometimes distant teenager.
It's a really heart warming tale and I think very healthy film with regards to masculinity. One of the few films I think would benefit from a modern remake. It's a message that is more important than ever for boys.
The thing David said at the end about telling someone something they need to hear/compliment in a uniquely true way is so absolutely true. My love language is words of affirmation, and i see when the words i say makes a person sit up taller and starts to see their worth through my eyes as something that is real.
This movie did very well in Sweden when it came out. It seems like the rest of the world really slept on it. Milennials my age (early 90's) mostly have fond thoughts of this movie. The voice acting of John Silver in Swedish just pierces your heart.

I’m going to be honest a few years ago(~2015-17) I thought nonbinary aromantic and asexual were just people wanting to be unique in the dumbest way possible. mainly I lumped them in with people trying to cosplay/larp a sexual orientation that was just nonsensical.
like the memed i sexual identify as an apache helicopters un-ironically. Now I know a good deal more about both and understand what they are thanks to following and watching a few lgbt creators like not so average fan girl.

with her being a natural lgbt dictionary during the videos helped give merit to the explanation of non-binary(though i still do not have a full grasp of the term) and aromantic/asexual. though biromantic is a new one but thanks to said human dictionary i have a general idea what it could mean so that helps
I adore that when Silver is struggling to choose between the treasure and saving Jim, his two halves represent who he could be. The treasure is closest to his cold and distant robotic parts, while what's left of his humanity and love is closest to Jim. Like, he's not just choosing who/what to save, but he's deciding once and for all what kind of person he is and what really matters to him. I'm not wording this well, but I just adore this movie and how it shows Silver and Jim grow together.
My favorite touch to this animation is Silver's eyes. When he's acting out of self-interest, lying or scheming to cause harm to others, his robot eye is front and center. When he's being sincere and caring for Jim, his human eye is more prominent. Just one of the many brilliant touches that make this the most inexplicable bomb in recent Disney memory. It's better than most of the Renaissance films, but is widely forgotten. One of my favorite movies, period.
Also, "Dang it, Jim. I'm an astronomer, not a doctor! I mean, I am a doctor, but I'm not that kind of doctor. I have a doctorate, it's not the same thing. You can't help people with a doctorate. You just sit there and you're useless!"
This movie makes me grin, laugh and cry every time I watch it. Definitely a lifetime favorite.
My ear caught when Alan said 'Tiberius', so I double checked Jim's middle name and found 'Pleiades' which winds up being a constellation. Makes sense!
This movie is criminally underrated, it's easily in my top 5 favourite movies! 😀I never noticed the subtle changes in Jims character, it's mind blowing what the animators did.
This movie has never gotten the recognition is so rightly deserves. It's such a beautiful adaptation of 'Treasure Island' with such a deep heart to it. The writing, the music (both score and pop/contemporary by 'The Googoo Dolls') was so perfect.
I LOVED this movie as a kid. I wanted a morph of my own, I wanted to have that solar surfboard from the original scene and looking back on it now brings me to tears. It makes me realize this movie shaped my eagerness for adventure and the friends I have now. My friends emulate these characters so damn much it's crazy.

Thank you for featuring this movie, guys! It deserves all of the praise for being such a timeless story about growth, and it's such a tragedy how Disney higher ups had zero faith in it from pretty much the very start.
Also, "I'm Still Here" by the Goo Goo Dolls is low-key one of my favorite Disney songs of all time alongside all of the Tarzan's ones.
Treasure Planet is so underrated disney movie. And I loved it back when it came out and I love it now too. It's just hitting where it's suppose to.
When I was a kid, my grandmother told me she had literal dreams of me doing amazing things and meeting good people, didn’t know when or how but I was successful somewhat. However the main thing is that she saw me in her dream helping people no matter what happen and it made me happy. In reality I do love helping people, it makes me feel good even when I’m feel like I’m at my lowest and just wanna break down. It makes me wanna keep going.She said I was going to do great things one day. Sadly she passed, but I still think about her to this day. My name is also James and everytime I see this movie or any Disney movie growing up it always found someway to make me cry. Hearing those same words, “ I see greatness in you”, hearing it from someone else hits different from yourself believing it. To this day, I live to see her dream come true and make her proud❤

This movie really melts my heart on a different level... especially because I've been in Jim's shoes, abandoned by my father, and found a parent figure in a friend just like Silver, who sadly passed away a few years ago... I cry everytime I hear that song.

I hadn't ever seen this movie until just a few months ago when my husband insisted i watch it. I fell in love with it immediately! So many sweet relationships, and an absolutely amazing story!

I've not clicked on one of these videos faster! This was one of my favorite movies growing up and it always a shock to me that it was mostly ignored and forgotten. The animation, the framing, the story, all so wonderful.

This is one of my FAVORITE movies all time. It’s visuals are amazing, the soundtrack is fantastic, the story is brilliant, and the writing and messages in this film is just a perfect example of how to implement morality into cinema. Fantastic film
Yes I have been waiting for this one to come out because I have always liked this movie. I especially love the found father/son dynamic of Silver and Jim in the movie.
I’m sure I speak for soooo many others when I say thank you for your constant and consistent acknowledgement of the asexual and aromantic communities. This is one of the few channels (and places in general) that I feel seen and heard. Love you Jono for bringing us into the light constantly and love you David for being such a positive force that you inspired him to do so!

I had the exact same reaction to Silver's line at the very end of the movie, I find myself tearing up every time I think about the emotion in Silver's voice and the look on Jim's face 😭
I watched this movie so much growing up. Jim’s character spoke to me so much, especially his relationship with John. Never really felt there was anyone on my side growing up, and my father wasn’t really around. The idea of having someone at my back no matter what, always encouraging me and spurring me toward my dreams, became a constant fantasy of mine, but Iittle kid me was also terrified that no one would support me for a reason that wasn’t selfish. This movie may have instilled that warning in me, but at the same time, it helped me to see the possibility of redemption in everyone, no matter how messed up they are. No matter how many mistakes they’ve made.
Flash forward to now, I have a pretty good relationship with my dad, and his promise to me is that he’ll support me in anything I choose to do as long as it makes me happy. So far, so good :)
This is such an underrated film. I'm always shocked it didn't do well in the box office because I remember seeing it three times in theatres.
Also, David's "you have to be you, loudly, wherever you are" is beautiful!
I believe it came out at same time as a Harry potter movie which led to being pulled out of threaters quickly. Just a theory
"I will make this as mono-syllabic as possible; I do not much care for the crew YOU hired." It's such a good line. This movie is so under-rated, I saw it in theatres and mourn the loss of traditional animation from Disney.
I know Disney didn't make this movie easy for the creators, but I hope they know how loved it is by so many. There are so many different ways this movie can hit you hard.
Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver, both developed a special connection! Silver became like the father, which Jim had lost. Jim of course became like the son, which Silver had never had. Loved that surrogate dynamic in this movie!❤
It took me several weeks to watch this episode because I knew I'd get so emotional. Sure enough! Everything you all touched on I connected with so much. This movie resonated with me so much as a kid. The I'm Still Here part of the movie always made me ugly cry as a kid, still does. The "rattle the stars moment" is one of the most poignant, vulnerable moments I've ever seen in a movie. The music, the expressions on the characters...it just gets me every time.
All the awesome facts about the visuals were amazing!! I'm in awe of how much they got across through those alone! That was so cool!!

I was OBSESSED with this film when I was a kid. I had the art book that I looked at every day and studied all the designs of the monsters and worlds. It's such a special film that helped kindle my love of adventure as a child. ❤
