I love how The Law and Order's writers thought having the Blue's clues guy as a delusional character would be funny and unknowledgeably opened Pandora's box.
Even the progressions of the hosts makes sense if you see it as Kevin losing his sense of self due to his trauma. First itself someone who looks exactly like him (Steve), then a character directly related to the last host who looks similar (Joe), and finally someone distantly related who looks completely different (Josh). Everytime Kevin comes back to the care center he loses a piece of himself, until he dies
Ah man, I was so close. I had concluded that Joe and Josh were visually inspired by other patients that Kevin/‘Steve’ must’ve met prior to his death. Considering that they are sometimes shown sharing the same screen, and Kevin does have a younger brother just like ‘Steve’ has ‘Joe’ as a little brother, I say it’s more than adequate to consider that Kevin likely had close friends before his death, which is really sad cause for them to be so prominent in his mind, they either died because of the abuse or were separated from him and he was desperate to cling onto their memory by going to the theater. That just makes things a way lot sadder..
I think it's also safe to say part of it is due to the literal brain damage brought on by the helmet. that part kinda got glossed over for some reason, but it's literally why he died in the first place lol him replacing himself with new versions that are more and more "distorted" (ie start to look less and less like himself) makes total sense when you factor in the literal physical brain damage on top of all the severe autism and trauma/PTSD from the abuse.
i could be wrong but i think the show starts like we already know steve, so that could imply there are different versions prior, like he was called kevin before because it was originally him
I just noticed that when kevin’s imagination of Josh, the newest main character, wakes up and leaves the first thing we see is crowds. (Josh gets overwhelmed aka Kevin) then a close up shot of a cop, just like the law and order episode. Just something I thought you would bring up, but theres only so much time and research a person can do, great vid!
Oh yeah, that whole sequence of getting overwhelmed by lots of noise and all the busy-ness is definitely an Autistic trait. I know he's supposed to be a person that kids will like and relate to, so he's written very childish, but man he is a full grown adult, Josh irrefutably has autism. Also for my own experiences having difficulty with bus routes and huge difficulty when I don't have specifics, Josh not knowing how to get to the theater or what specific theater it is actually hits home 😳
I was ready to be like "Okay, then why is he 'Steve' in the fantasy when his name's Kevin." but then you got to the part with Blue and it makes perfect sense. A lot of people with autism don't feel like humans, especially if they have trouble relating to them. Of course Kevin isn't some human named Steve, he imagines himself as Blue, the real main character of the show, an animal struggling to be understood. He imagined an animal character for himself just like I do. Both Blue and Steve are almost like parts of himself.
THIS. There doesn't need to be a physical representation of Blue in the real world, because Blue is just another way that Kevin has found to express himself. The connection with people on the autism spectrum struggling to communicate fully hooked me. And by that I mean, it's so silly but actually so on point too? 😅
Either that, or he always wanted to be british. Hence why british Blues Clues got 'Kevin' (side note: as an english person this video was so confusing because I always forget different countries had different Blue's Clues hosts... and another character being called Kevin really took the cake)
I don't think he's blue. The chair, mentions of time, and the presence of many elements in Kevin's life like drawing make it too clear he's Steve. Blue represents both his inability to communicate well as well as his difficulty interpreting others. But Blue is man's best friend, his closest individual in his life, which feeds back into these dissociative fantasies because being quiet and retreating inward to his mind is the only place things make sense for him.

yep makes sense. one looks like him but can communicate effectively, something Kevin wishes he could do, and the other is his inner self, how he truly sees himself because he struggles with communicating.
“Mail time” is a common occurrence in facilities like this. Having a repeating fantasy delivering mail would go along with a daily mail time. And being that it would likely occur during group time this might be the reason the others become his mail

Speaking as someone on the spectrum who grew up with Blue's Clues (and only a little Law & Order) I'd like to think of it as Kevin/Steve getting a second chance in another world. Especially seeing how he becomes a Detective in NYC, and tells the audience how proud he is of how far we've come! Well made, well informed video. Thank you very much!
I actually DO remember hearing about Steve's role in Law and Order, mostly because of an urban legend of Steve dying of a drug overdose because kids got him confused with his role in L&O. I was surprised to learn the L&O Steve wasn't a drug addict, but something even more tragic.
Can you imagine parents that was annoyed with steve from blues clues finding that L&O episode and just started talking and hyping up about how Steve is finally dead (Similar to how people talked about how they were happy that Edward from Twilight was dead (When Robert played that dude from Harry Potter and died), or even when Justin Beiber died in Law and Order as well and people rejoiced). Mail time seems to be very very similar to hospital visiting hours, the little girl saying “this is where we play with our blocks” sounds like another patient showing their brother or sister around. Also having a specific time for contact with people who aren’t “in the universe” is basically what visiting hours are for. Having parents come visit and get an update on their kid and have the siblings play blocks or tic tac toe with them.
For someone like Kevin who is traumatized and has had to retreat inward, "mail time" could actually represent one of the few times he's appreciated or shown positive attention, like when you're a kid and you get mail it's exciting.
AHHHHH OKAY I'm so glad you pointed out BD Wong, bc yes he's also in Law and Order, but most importantly, HE'S A PSYCHOLOGIST. So in the instance that maybe Kevin didn't die, Dr. Huang could have very possibly talked to Kevin about his experiences at the behavioral clinic. The gentle tone he uses with Josh in the film is the same understanding tone that Dr. Huang would have used in speaking to a victim. (although this is probably the flimsiest connection, as BD Wong's first appearance in Law and Order SVU is in 2001, 6 years after the Kevin Jeffries episode)
This theory fucking broke me man. I grew up watching blue's clues and it was my number 1 comfort show. Looking at it through the lens that it's the manic imagination of an abuse Autistic child who ends up literally dying by the end of the episode really hurt me on another level. Hans Asperger was a not-see scientist whose whole thing was finding the ones worth keeping around, hence Asperger's ending up being the name for it... psychologists have stopped using that name for this diagnosis so better to just say you're on the autism spectrum. Those formerly diagnosed with Asperger's currently tend to sit in level one autism spectrum disorder. I know that's where I'm at 👍

This theory made me cry so hard even if that wasn't your intention. I have autism just like Kevin and how you described his perspective is so accurate because of the sensory overload of New York and how he doesn't understand social cues. The cherry on top was the ending of the movie because it feels like Kevin was having one final hurrah before he died, the Everywhere at the End of Time music tugged at my heart strings too. Idea: The mail videos are actually a coping mechanism for his inability to communicate, by imagining him taking to actual people and being able to communicate what he wants to say.
And to think, MatPat had only 2-3 years ago made a theory about Blue being an alien back when he was still onboard as host. I’m still going for Alex’s theory cause I realized that I absolutely love psychological horror and he’s the guy responsible for awakening that primal beast in me that seeks justice for tortured souls. @@unatortejathat’s his point theorizer has said it numerous times he likes to ride the line of obscurity, he wants to see how deranged, insane and farfetched his theories can get with evidence. the whole point of the Mort theory was exactly that make absurd claims and somehow the show will perfectly back them up 100% making it seem like it was put there for that intent. even his monsters inc theory was crazy until he showed the deleted scene of one of Boo’s toys becoming sentient and leave her room entering the monster world, literally proving half of his claims. theorizer is a fun guy to watch for those crazy theories that could possibly be true.
13:38 - OR you realise that a Greyhound, which is a blue bus, is also a type of dog. Truth is, they probably made that episode with all of those Easter-egg hints because the actor was already so well known for his involvement in Blue's Clues. It was a hidden homage.

Could it make sense that instead of the host changing due to steve attempting to leave the hospital, it could instead be interpreted that Kevin see's himself as blue, trying to communicate with Steve (Kevin, himself) and every time the host changes it's Blue (Kevin) trying to communicate with the doctors (Joe and Josh) but is simply unable to express himself. So kevin sees himself as blue trying to connect/communicate with himself as steve and the outside world and that is why the host changes.
3:40 before I get any further into this I’d like to say these “fake” vibes you get from the show, as a kid, always just felt like I was getting to play pretend with a grownup. It was exciting and engaging and I really enjoyed it, honestly I think I’d still at least be *entertained* as adult. Additionally, Steve was never alone as a human, all of us watching are there too. I always interpreted the audience as part of the show.

If this is TRULY Kevin's fantasy, then the outside world/ reality in Law and Order is breaking into it and directly addressing Kevin's condition. > This one's a stretch, but if you look at the clothes Steve and Kevin wear, they are almost the identical. The same pair of Kakis and the same Green sweater (I know that color of Kevin's sweater looks grey, but its still a sweater. Either way it's the same type of clothing to make the same outfit they wear). Alex, if you're reading this, hopefully this concrete and helps solidify the theory. But hey, that's just a theory... A FILM THEORY!!! Aaaaand, CUT!

@@ye2437, no. My childhood was already ruined by my ex-stepfather who tried to accuse my mother of abuse and kicked me, her, and the older of my two younger brothers out of the house. I also have a massive guilt complex and Eldest daughter syndrome probably from having to deal with emotional abuse from him as basically the third parent to my two youngest siblings. A childhood ruining theory is scary sure but not as bad as the emotional trauma. If anything, Alex Bale’s theories have only awakened my love for psychological horror..

Fun fact: Steven burns appeared on another police drama show called homicide life on the streets. In season six episode, he plays a student that kills his bully and his acting is really good in that episode and that came out long before Law and Order and Blue’s Clues.

I don't think these coincidences are nods to blues clues considering blues clues came out in 96 and this law and order episode came out in 95, the pilot was only filmed around this time. All of this just fits together really, REALLY well.
Ahhhhhhh, you see thats whats called "The Matpat affect". in which a host is so charismatic and convincing, as well as talks about a vagualy nostalgic thing. which causes the "ruining your childhood" symptom
I didn't take much convincing after you brought up the thinking chair. I'm autistic myself, so I know what it's like to have a vivid imagination and the idea that Kevin being strapped to a chair and forced to wear a sensory helmet, the only thing he can do at that point is... Think. Think about anything. Think about being anywhere else, doing anything else, being anyone else. Kevin has trauma, he's abused, he's neglected, but Steve doesn't have to worry about all that-- Steve's life is regimented, simple, and everyone is happy to see him. During a time I was depressed I actually used Animal Crossing Wild World for a similar escape, everyone in my town wanted to see me whilst in real life I'd felt like nobody wanted me... I imagine if Kevin gets to be Steve when he closes his eyes and lives with a dog he solves simple mysteries with, it's a safe place that he doesn't have in real life. It's one big coping mechanism through an active imagination and heavy disassociation. Despite the dramatisation, and even if these two fitting together is a coincidence, this resonates in a way to my own personal experience that makes complete sense.
Side note: when Kevin says, "what time" this is most likely an example of echolalia not about routines. Echolalia is the involuntary repetition of words or phrases that someone else says. For example, an autistic child might repeat the word ice to refer to something being clear or might repeat a noise that they hear from another person and then use to refer to that person. So it is different than how Joe from Blue Clues is using what time.
I work with a couple autistic people who are definitely time keepers and compulsively check their timepieces and are particular about routine (or possibly quite anxious about being late to things).
@@nezuminora9528oh yes it is a pretty common autistic trait which is why it is mentioned on the DSM-V-TR. This is known as restrictive routines which just means an adherence to a routine and experience negative effects whenever a particular routine is not followed exactly. Another reason why a lot of autistic people are anxious about being late is due black and white thinking or restrictive rule following. Basically, the idea is once a rule is established the person rarely allows expectations to the said rule. For example, once the notion of being on time is the correct thing to do then it is hard for an autistic person to create deviation for that rule even when those deviations are okay such as being late due to traffic. Most non autistic people would agree that being on time is a good thing and try to follow that rule but recognize that there are expectations that are socially acceptable such as late from traffic. However, for autistic people those expectations are not seen as allowed either due to not having it explicitly said to them or their own mind not allowing deviation. This causes anxiety due to the inability to prevent uncontrollable scenarios.

Most of his recent projects were about something we see actually being a real life TV show (Magic Schoolbus, Pixar, his own short movie) while there was a section in the Muse ARG depicting it as a filmed project (which never was brought up again). Now we have a theme of media being connected even if it doesn't seem like that at first. Especially with this theory being completely based on the same actor being part of different projects. It feels like Alex is telling us that his projects are connected and that there is something bigger behind them. I am not crazy I swear! 😭😂 What do you think friends?

The every at the end of time song near the end is so deep, it's about the brain crumbling to bits after a fight with dementia, and the same was happening as he died, except it's blood cloth. I love the attention to detail.

Setting your alarm after you wake up is probably the weirdest part to me. Like, everything on there is weird because of how long they take, but what type of alarm clock needs you to set it every day? Not even old alarm clocks needed that. Plus, going to work and then meditating only an hour later either means that they're working one hour a day, or their job lets them meditate at work, and I'm not sure which is weirder.
One hour of brushing teeth (or just like a 45 minute break from that tough task) then only one hour of work that starts at 5 don’t get dress till 3 don’t eat breakfast till 4 (don’t even get ready to leave the house till 4) eat breakfast and dinner an hour apart being 8 and 9 WTF is this schedule now that you mention it
I've been watching MatPat since 2017 and I do truly believe that Alex is the soul benefit of TH-cam theory man and hold him higher than the entire team Mat lined up Alex just has this thing about the way he goes about presenting talking about stuff and find information that makes it so entertaining and believable that he truly is that great of a researcher and theorist

I love how The Law and Order's writers thought having the Blue's clues guy as a delusional character would be funny and unknowledgeably opened Pandora's box.
Even the progressions of the hosts makes sense if you see it as Kevin losing his sense of self due to his trauma. First itself someone who looks exactly like him (Steve), then a character directly related to the last host who looks similar (Joe), and finally someone distantly related who looks completely different (Josh). Everytime Kevin comes back to the care center he loses a piece of himself, until he dies

Ah man, I was so close. I had concluded that Joe and Josh were visually inspired by other patients that Kevin/‘Steve’ must’ve met prior to his death. Considering that they are sometimes shown sharing the same screen, and Kevin does have a younger brother just like ‘Steve’ has ‘Joe’ as a little brother, I say it’s more than adequate to consider that Kevin likely had close friends before his death, which is really sad cause for them to be so prominent in his mind, they either died because of the abuse or were separated from him and he was desperate to cling onto their memory by going to the theater. That just makes things a way lot sadder..

I think it's also safe to say part of it is due to the literal brain damage brought on by the helmet. that part kinda got glossed over for some reason, but it's literally why he died in the first place lol
him replacing himself with new versions that are more and more "distorted" (ie start to look less and less like himself) makes total sense when you factor in the literal physical brain damage on top of all the severe autism and trauma/PTSD from the abuse.

I just noticed that when kevin’s imagination of Josh, the newest main character, wakes up and leaves the first thing we see is crowds. (Josh gets overwhelmed aka Kevin) then a close up shot of a cop, just like the law and order episode.

Oh yeah, that whole sequence of getting overwhelmed by lots of noise and all the busy-ness is definitely an Autistic trait. I was ready to be like "Okay, then why is he 'Steve' in the fantasy when his name's Kevin." but then you got to the part with Blue and it makes perfect sense. A lot of people with autism don't feel like humans, especially if they have trouble relating to them. Of course Kevin isn't some human named Steve, he imagines himself as Blue, the real main character of the show, an animal struggling to be understood. He imagined an animal character for himself just like I do.
Both Blue and Steve are almost like parts of himself.
THIS. There doesn't need to be a physical representation of Blue in the real world, because Blue is just another way that Kevin has found to express himself. The connection with people on the autism spectrum struggling to communicate fully hooked me.
And by that I mean, it's so silly but actually so on point too? 😅

I don't think he's blue. The chair, mentions of time, and the presence of many elements in Kevin's life like drawing make it too clear he's Steve. Blue represents both his inability to communicate well as well as his difficulty interpreting others. But Blue is man's best friend, his closest individual in his life, which feeds back into these dissociative fantasies because being quiet and retreating inward to his mind is the only place things make sense for him.

“Mail time” is a common occurrence in facilities like this. Having a repeating fantasy delivering mail would go along with a daily mail time. And being that it would likely occur during group time this might be the reason the others become his mail

Mail time seems to be very very similar to hospital visiting hours, the little girl saying “this is where we play with our blocks” sounds like another patient showing their brother or sister around. Also having a specific time for contact with people who aren’t “in the universe” is basically what visiting hours are for. Having parents come visit and get an update on their kid and have the siblings play blocks or tic tac toe with them.
For someone like Kevin who is traumatized and has had to retreat inward, "mail time" could actually represent one of the few times he's appreciated or shown positive attention, like when you're a kid and you get mail it's exciting.
AHHHHH OKAY I'm so glad you pointed out BD Wong, bc yes he's also in Law and Order, but most importantly, HE'S A PSYCHOLOGIST. So in the instance that maybe Kevin didn't die, Dr. Huang could have very possibly talked to Kevin about his experiences at the behavioral clinic. The gentle tone he uses with Josh in the film is the same understanding tone that Dr. Huang would have used in speaking to a victim. (although this is probably the flimsiest connection, as BD Wong's first appearance in Law and Order SVU is in 2001, 6 years after the Kevin Jeffries episode)
This theory fucking broke me man. I grew up watching blue's clues and it was my number 1 comfort show. Looking at it through the lens that it's the manic imagination of an abuse Autistic child who ends up literally dying by the end of the episode really hurt me on another level. Hans Asperger was a not-see scientist whose whole thing was finding the ones worth keeping around, hence Asperger's ending up being the name for it... psychologists have stopped using that name for this diagnosis so better to just say you're on the autism spectrum. Those formerly diagnosed with Asperger's currently tend to sit in level one autism spectrum disorder. I know that's where I'm at 👍

Could it make sense that instead of the host changing due to steve attempting to leave the hospital, it could instead be interpreted that Kevin see's himself as blue, trying to communicate with Steve (Kevin, himself) and every time the host changes it's Blue (Kevin) trying to communicate with the doctors (Joe and Josh) but is simply unable to express himself. So kevin sees himself as blue trying to connect/communicate with himself as steve and the outside world and that is why the host changes.
Considering the conditions of not being able to talk and being easily upset maybe blue is all we have left of Kevin as the world falls apart

I also have a massive guilt complex and Eldest daughter syndrome probably from having to deal with emotional abuse from him as basically the third parent to my two youngest siblings. A childhood ruining theory is scary sure but not as bad as the emotional trauma. If anything, Alex Bale’s theories have only awakened my love for psychological horror..

I don't think these coincidences are nods to blues clues considering blues clues came out in 96 and this law and order episode came out in 95, the pilot was only filmed around this time. All of this just fits together really, REALLY well.

I didn't take much convincing after you brought up the thinking chair. I'm autistic myself, so I know what it's like to have a vivid imagination and the idea that Kevin being strapped to a chair and forced to wear a sensory helmet, the only thing he can do at that point is... Think. Think about anything. Think about being anywhere else, doing anything else, being anyone else. Kevin has trauma, he's abused, he's neglected, but Steve doesn't have to worry about all that-- Steve's life is regimented, simple, and everyone is happy to see him. During a time I was depressed I actually used Animal Crossing Wild World for a similar escape, everyone in my town wanted to see me whilst in real life I'd felt like nobody wanted me... I imagine if Kevin gets to be Steve when he closes his eyes and lives with a dog he solves simple mysteries with, it's a safe place that he doesn't have in real life. It's one big coping mechanism through an active imagination and heavy disassociation. Despite the dramatisation, and even if these two fitting together is a coincidence, this resonates in a way to my own personal experience that makes complete sense.
Side note: when Kevin says, "what time" this is most likely an example of echolalia not about routines. Echolalia is the involuntary repetition of words or phrases that someone else says. For example, an autistic child might repeat the word ice to refer to something being clear or might repeat a noise that they hear from another person and then use to refer to that person. So it is different than how Joe from Blue Clues is using what time.
That said, he was grabbing for their wrists, as though looking for watches.
I work with a couple autistic people who are definitely time keepers and compulsively check their timepieces and are particular about routine (or possibly quite anxious about being late to things).

@@nezuminora9528oh yes it is a pretty common autistic trait which is why it is mentioned on the DSM-V-TR. This is known as restrictive routines which just means an adherence to a routine and experience negative effects whenever a particular routine is not followed exactly. Another reason why a lot of autistic people are anxious about being late is due black and white thinking or restrictive rule following. Basically, the idea is once a rule is established the person rarely allows expectations to the said rule. For example, once the notion of being on time is the correct thing to do then it is hard for an autistic person to create deviation for that rule even when those deviations are okay such as being late due to traffic. Most non autistic people would agree that being on time is a good thing and try to follow that rule but recognize that there are expectations that are socially acceptable such as late from traffic. However, for autistic people those expectations are not seen as allowed either due to not having it explicitly said to them or their own mind not allowing deviation. This causes anxiety due to the inability to prevent uncontrollable scenarios.

Most of his recent projects were about something we see actually being a real life TV show (Magic Schoolbus, Pixar, his own short movie) while there was a section in the Muse ARG depicting it as a filmed project (which never was brought up again).
Now we have a theme of media being connected even if it doesn't seem like that at first. Especially with this theory being completely based on the same actor being part of different projects.
It feels like Alex is telling us that his projects are connected and that there is something bigger behind them. I am not crazy I swear! 😭😂

The every at the end of time song near the end is so deep, it's about the brain crumbling to bits after a fight with dementia, and the same was happening as he died, except it's blood cloth. I love the attention to detail.

Setting your alarm after you wake up is probably the weirdest part to me. Like, everything on there is weird because of how long they take, but what type of alarm clock needs you to set it every day? Not even old alarm clocks needed that. Plus, going to work and then meditating only an hour later either means that they're working one hour a day, or their job lets them meditate at work, and I'm not sure which is weirder.
