This game is phenomenal. The graphics, the animations, the music, the battle system, the character customization, the side quests, the island themes and puzzles, the humor, just everything, I love it.
Heck yeah! Everything you said is amazing in this game. I feel like people aren't really giving the game a chance. They're getting stuck on one or two little things and missing out on one of the best in the series.
@@AustinSalyer Absolutely they are. And again, that combat, hoo boy! I'm at the last like 10% or so and haven't found any type of Savage Labyrinth area in this game but would LOVE if there was DLC that gave us maybe 50 floors to battle through. Either way, great video, even better game, gonna get back to playing!
@@rileylederer8800 Lottsacoins really stood out, loved that one and the picture puzzles, Twistee has awesome music and fairly funny characters (my kids really liked the dancers), Heatfreeze's island had great puzzles with the fire and ice powers, also, the guardians going through their whole speech about reconnecting before giving Mario and Luigi their powers only to find out M&L had solved the islands issues was funny, Merrygo felt much different than the others with its large rotating puzzle, Jellyfish was unique and beautiful, Allsand with those sharks was awesome and trying to challenge them throughout different points in the game was always fun, Offandon with it's castle and boss were fun. My favorite joke was the recurring one where Shun kept getting interrupted, the way someone else's speech bubble covered his always got a laugh. First off, regarding side quests, overhearing characters gossip about them is a neat idea. The Sand shark side quest was fun, the rematches with the glohm bosses were good challenges, I liked IDLE's brooch side quest, finding the brother on the small island was fun, loved the secret code on Lottsacoins, the monster mania ones are fun, there's a whole bunch.
Phenomenal it is not. Whats good about the game is what has already worked before. The puzzles are okayish, the island themes are as generic as in Paper Jam, grass, ice, lava, sewer etc., the humor boils down to mostly unfunny puns, the sidequests are mostly boring fetch quests that have you travel inbetween islands with long loading screens each time. Have you played older games in the series? Because this is not its high point Im afraid.
THE CAMERA PANNING TO SHOW YOUR OBJECTIVE IS LITERALLY A MARIO SERIES STAPLE THAT HAS BEEN IN EVERY 3D PLATFORMER IN THE SERIES SINCE SUNSHINE, AND EVERY KART GAME SINCE MK64. WHY WOULD IT HAPPENING IN AN RPG BE A BAD THING? DO IT MORE IN MORE SPINOFF SERIES.
Hot take: The little imperfections of Luigi's AI actually add even more charm to this game, leading to some really funny situations at times, and personally I enjoy it! I've also encountered very few performance issues so far, and heard that some people haven't encountered any, so I guess it varies? Dunno what exactly it depends on, but at least my copy of the game on my Switch console runs pretty smoothly. I just encountered the first bad hiccup yesterday and I'm already half through the game if not more, I think. As for the Luigi Logic animations, to me they only got annoying at the beginning because they were a bit too frequent, used for the simplest of things like Luigi figuring out that he'd collect the green coins. Later on they got much better, done a bit less often in more appropriate places.
IGN's review is interesting, because I do think it brings up some valid points here and there but is overly harsh about it. Plus, a lot of the points made, such as the characters ,dialogue, or story being bad, is very subjective. Like, honestly, when I hear people saying the dialogue or story of this game is bad, all I can really think is "Did we play the same game?" The story is much more in depth than any of the previous games in the series, and I did find the dialogue entertaining at several points. I will say, in certain ways, these aspects do feel a bit different from the previous games, probably as a result of studio changes, but I don't think they're necessarily different in a bad way. Also, generic locations? Like, okay sure, a handful of them are pretty standard stuff, but you can't tell me islands like Lottacoins, Bulbfish, Offandon, and Jellyfish are things we've seen dozens of times. The rest of his points are valid, but also exaggerated, in my opinion. The perfomance could be better in certain places, but honestly, I never felt it was nearly as terrible as he makes it out to be. He treats it as if the game is constantly lagging at an unbearable speed or something, but no, it just has some occasional hiccups, which isn't ideal, but not horrendous either. Luigi is certainly different in this game, which could be off-putting for some players, but honestly... I actually came to like it over time. Luigi feels like his own character now, rather than just an extension of Mario. In the other games, he mostly just vacantly follows behind Mario, doing very little on his own. Also, I like being able to have him help out with things that otherwise would have to be done with only Mario, such as hammering crates and plucking turnips. Makes interacting with elements in the overworld more efficient. The A.I. could maybe be polished up a bit in a few areas, but for the most part, it seems to work well. Also, yeah, the examples he used don't make sense. Can you imagine having to constantly switch between Mario and Luigi manually for those red and green platform sections he brought up? That would be a slog, especially if you fail and have to start over. This new system makes it a lot more feasible to include stuff like that. I do agree that the pacing could be better, but weirdly, it's not the later parts of the game that bothered me. It's the early parts, where you don't have access to a lot of the game's coolest features yet, such as the Battle Plugs. After completing the first sea, the game only gets better. I have no disrespect for the guy who wrote that IGN review. The game just didn't click with him, and that's fine. However, it's just such a shame that this one review has greatly harmed the discourse surrounding this game. I really wish people wouldn't put so much stock into what big publications like IGN say, because I honestly feel like a lot of people are just assuming the game's going to be bad as a result, and as such, end up struggling to enjoy it. I honestly think this game is one of the better ones in the series, even if it does have some flaws here and there.
Very well said. To your point about the IGN reviewer Logan Plant I completely agree. I respect him for having a strong opinion, and he's entitled to that opinion. The issue is the IMPACT that his specific opinion has. I considered taking a very different approach on this video because I didn't want to dogpile on the guy. However, I felt the need to directly counter that review because it has tainted the reputation of what is a great game. If fans just give this thing a chance they'll love it.
I think most people who say "the story was bad" about video games mean "the story exists too much I should be able to literally just play the game." It's a way too common attitude in gamers that I know.
Okay the “first baby’s rpg” criticism for brothership to me seems to weird cuz the Mario RPGs in general is suppose to be a baby’s first rpg and you can’t say I’m wrong when a lot of people’s first game to the genre is usually these games lmao. The whole Mario and Luigi series same with paper Mario is made to be an entry point to the genre I hate to break it to the IGN guy lmao
Since brothership dropped appearantly. It's not a 5. It's a solid 7.5 at worst. And they rated it low because it didn't have dei bs. So i'll take their opinion for what it is (trash) and just enjoy the game until the end.
What hurts the most, is that IGN have greasily slithered their way onto Page One of Google over the years, and any rating that is below 50% is usually a Death Scentence for New and Original games like this that were made by a smaller studio with a relatively large budget.
IGN always sucks. It’s a pathetic company that doesn’t know anything about games. Look at cuphead, alien isolation. And now this… Frankly, I recommend that you don’t listen to IGN, and to NOT let it affect your decision on giving a game a shot
I don’t understand why people are hating on this game. I personally enjoyed it. First of all the characters were phenomenal. The things they say and the way they interact with the other characters were so funny. Especially snoutlet. Some of the side quests were really funny too, like the dude who didn’t know which of his girlfriends to propose to, or the old guy who ordered an.. interesting statue of willma. The Luigi logic was really funny. Other things I liked was the relationship between buddy and bowser jr. and how loyal all of bowsers minions were. Second thing I liked were the graphics. I loved the cartoony, silly vibe, and it was executed really well. The battle system was good, and I liked the battle plugs, but I’m not sure why they made Luigi’s UI use A when selecting. My only two gripes is that bowser, glohm bowser, and zokket didn’t receive their own battle themes, and the very last part of the game is in an apocalyptic state; making it really hard, boring, and sad if you want to 100% the game before the final boss.
No other Mario and Luigi game compares to the characters. Buddy and Bowser Jr were awesome lol. Probably the most likable Bowser Jr has been in a game. I was also disappointed at Bowser and other bosses not getting unique battle themes. We have been spoiled. I had pretty much everything wrapped up before I got to the end game so I didn't experience too much side-questing in it. I definitely can imagine it killing the vibe though lol.
It is 100% a great game, and since this was the first on the new 3D engine and and all, it would only get better! Still no clue why some people 1. Give bad reviews 2. Brush it off without even trying it out. In my opinion, this was basically the beta game for the engine to see if it is good and i think the gameplay was really fun. The story was great too, not on Bowsers inside story levels, but its still a way better story than a lot of games. Props to thegamebase for voicing out what a lot of people are thinking 👍
Thank you! I really hope they get to build on this engine because you're right about this being more of a transition game. The game isn't selling as well as TTYD and Mario RPG Remake, likely due to oversaturation of Mario RPG's. Plus, Sony is about to potentially buy out the company that owns Aquire. I think the series is in jeopardy due to all of this. That's why I'll continue to be vocal about how great it is.
@@insanerick2321 took me about 40 to finish it while completing everything. I thought the pacing wasn’t bad at all given the run time! The side quests especially were more interesting than I would have thought.
@AustinSalyer agreed. I think I have some many hours because I leave it on while I do other things. But I just got to the part where to reach the final boss with M n L at lvl 42. I did grind them a bit.
I really hope Nintendo doesn’t bail from making another MAL game I really hope they try and make a new one for Switch 2 and improve from the *real but minor* issues brothership had
2:29 Perhaps one of the most infuriating aspects of IGNs Brothership review is how a lot of the reviewers complaints essentially boil down to "This game was designed more with kids in mind and I don't like that." The first few hours are likely meant to be slow in order to keep younger less experienced players from feeling too overwhelmed from the outset which is a fairly understandable design choice given accessibility has been a key cornerstone of Nintendo's modern game design philosophy. Its so wild with Brotherships story that he claims that you don't get attached to any characters even though this is probably the most fleshed out supporting cast I have seen in a Mario game to date where NPCs don't feel like just another tutorial for tutorials, plot exposition, or funny dialogue.
Whatever you think of the game i hope we can all agree that it was super scummy of IGN to post a link to this review FOUR different times on Twitter. Like they need the money that badly that they said this game was average :(
TH-cam is annoying. It isn't notifying me whenever you upload. Really appreciate you covering this. IGN is a joke (7/10 Concord) but admittedly it had me gonna pass on this. Really align with a lot of your game opinions so I'm planning on picking it up this weekend. Hoping for a good time!
@@teal7652 Idk why TH-cam does that! Once you get through the admittedly slow start it takes off big time. Took me from mixed to a hard recommend. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
I can't believe they said the character desings look bad because they look too different to mushroom kingdom characters. OF COURSE THEY DON'T LOOK LIKE THEY ARE FROM A DIFFERENT WORLD, BECAUSE THEY ARE. The only bad things I can say about this game are that the game starts too slow, the finnal boss was cool but very easy and attacks where kinda underwhelming. The biggest and worst thing is they don't have post game content like beating all bosses with higher difficulty like in paper jam. There are so many enemies that I haven't seen all of their attacks because I killed them so fast. It is sad beating the game with all of these cool gear and lots of items and not get the chance to use them because all bosses are easy. If they add post game content with an update, I would give it a 8.5/10. If they don't, a 7.5/10. If they listen to the criticts. I assure yall next game can easily be the best M&L game ever because they dis so many things right with this game.
I was a bit underwhelmed with the final battle as well. The final sequence itself was great though. Would love to see more content added. I'd be all over it!
that's where the no gear run(includes no run down boots/hammer) comes in, it actually makes brothership pretty difficult. and the level scaling's surprisingly well-balanced for a no gear run. I deff suggest giving that a try, as even when around even level or a few under, the bros will get 1-2 shot, maybe 3 for luigi if he's lucky enough. even w/plugs a no gear run's deff still difficult, but this's the most fair challenge. even normal enemies surprisingly can pose a threat in a no gear run, esp w/their high hp, which I think's kinda refreshing. the games actually are interestingly, mainly easy because we're usin all of the tools and gear given out to us. yet the mario and luigi games actually do have some pretty hard fights when purposefully banning stuff like bros attacks for example, cept where required. I think you may deff be surprised by some bosses that were easy due to all the equips and bros attacks, who become a harder challenge when those tools aren't available. I'd also like to try to suggest doing a Jump/Hammer only run w/no bros attacks or gear, which's the hardest challenge the series has to offer. as next to DS Bowser's inside Story, I can confirm Brothership's the only other game where this's completely possible w/2-3 exceptions(Great conductor and the goomba+Koopa infinite wave. Sharpcask needs spiked ball plug til its enraged, where it abandons healing)
@MLmaster135 The bad thing about that is that this game is pretty long and I don't want to go through all of the story and puzzles again just to do that. If I knew the game was going to be this easy because of the gear and the beans I would have done it without them 😔. I really hope they add a boss rush mode or something like that but I doubt it. But you are right, a lot of enemies have creative, cool and hard attacks but having all of these gears and stats makes them easy to fight.
@@Jeijard supah valid, that's no prob. I'd deff say try it at a later date to avoid burnout👍 I deff wish there was a boss rush too I really liked the glohm enemies and how unique some of the enemies are like the zok troopers. and while the faster timing of glohm enemies is deff easier in a sense to counter, some're deff tricky 🤔
Personaly im hoping for a mix of the old and new luigi platforming styles, allowing you to control luigi with the b button and jumping across gaps with your input like the older games, but then having luigi logic built in aswell that you can activate and allow luigi to seperate from mario and do his own ai pathing, i feel like thatd allow it to be less awkward feeling especially to previous players of the series, something i feel like would be a good idea also is to have a setting that you can switch between the brothership luigi pathing when following mario and a "Veteran" or "classic" mode for if you prefer to have luigi follow and be controlled by your input as some will differ between which style works for them
I agree with mostly everything their review mentioned. Slow pace, weird control. Weird AI Luigi. But all of these doesnt make it 5/10. The game has moments where it's a 5 and moments where it's a 9. So it's at least a 7/10 for me.
My review for this games is as follows. The game is good but not great. It's very repetitive, especially with the jump and / or hammer attacks. You either do A/B/A or B/A/B. After doing that about 2000 literally. It's gets too repetitive. Same with the Bros attacks. Even though the animations at first were super cool. After seeing it hundreds of times, it just gets boring. I wish they had included the advance move set that after achieving 100 times the excellent rating, luigi thinks, and you get the advance move set. Something like that would keep it interesting. I also hated Connie. Her world literally collapsed, and she always runs ahead when about to fight the boss of the lighthouses. Also, the games always forces you play it in a linear way. I would say too linear. To the point were Snoutlet doesn't even let you find reefs unless you do what Snoutlet says first. The story was good and got better towards the end but progression is really slow paced. Battle plugs were good also but needed more variety. The art style is good, reminds me a lot of the original superstar saga. Mario right now is level 55 and im about to fight the final boss. Luigi is the same at 55 and I can get 1 bro move to give 3000 attack. Overall this is a good game but not a great one. This one won't be remembered like superstar saga or Bowers inside story. I give it a 7.5/10. Hope there is DLC down the line that at least give us the advanced move set to keep things interesting.
Man, I kind of hate IGN. They gave my goat KH 2 a 7.6 out of ten, the lowest of all of the Kingdom Hearts series. KH2 is probably the most loved game in the while series, but I guess they disagreed
I've always stood up for IGN and liked Logan Plant. But his review is so off the mark is genuinely baffling. From missing the point of some of the gameplay, puzzles and visual design to downright coming across as if he didn't play any more than 5-7 hours. His review is truly appalling
This game became my all time favorite game to date. Been playing this game every day. My gaming PC is collecting dust because of this one. Especially the special bro attacks.
Well I guess ign doesn’t like the fetch quests in Mario and Luigi games. If paper Mario did that and was completely optional (in most cases except super paper Mario) then I guess that don’t like that idea because how it involves backtracking and that defeats the purpose of exploration in a Mario and Luigi game since this is the first to push beyond the limit that the previous game has which it sections with u can’t do anything exploration to find items. I don’t see any wrong with the fetch quests since that’s optional unless u want to be overpowered plus I don’t see a problem with back tracking unless people can’t stand backtracking in Mario RPGs
My wife played Super Mario RPG remake, loved it and wanted more. Asked for this game for Christmas, but I heard it was bad because of the IGN. I picked up Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door instead. Can’t go wrong with a classic. I can always get this game for her birthday if she still wants it.
Lol, I’m 23 years old and I found the script funny. The ending of the game was super heartfelt and the boss area was awesome. I loved all 60 hours I played of it.
IGN needs second thoughts before reviewing the game when it hasn’t been released since they have uploaded the video they don’t realize of how this series was developed its a great omen since the very first game in 2003 like seriously who reviews a game when it hasn’t been released its very discouraging ☠️👎🏻
Your review is way more hands-on and player-realistic. I always hated how IGN hires idiotic and biased reviewers who clearly don't even know how to play a videogame, they just button mash like idiots, like they did with Zelda Skyward Sword, Pokémon OR/AS, to name a few from an otherwise lengthy list of erratic reviews that missed the point of the games. Thanks to you, I am determined to getting this game and it is exactly what I expected it to be: A Mario & Luigi game, with a new concept and ideas implemented. No game is perfect, there is always areas of opportunity, but that is true even in our all-time favorite games. This will be a nice Christmas gift to myself!
I went into this strongly knowing it was gonna be great but still wouldn’t top my favorite in the series; Dream Team. One big reason I loved dream team was because of the giant bosses being in 3D.. so to make the entire game 3D was a literal dream come true for me. I have always wanted a fully rendered 3D game in the series and this game fully delivers on that ! I’m 2/3rds through it and to me it blows dream team out of the water in every way.. I love the battle plug 🔌 feature so much that was ingenious.. the switch to 3D.. mainly the gameplay.. for me so far it blows dream team away.. it was still nice to see a small handful of dream team enemies in it too it has the perfect mix of Concordia and mushroom kingdom enemies in it ! My ONLY critique is the lack of giant battles in it and that beans are no longer unlimited as far as I heard.. Love this game so far though !
The complaint about the residents of Concordia looking different than those of the Mushroom Kingdoms rings very similar to a complaint about Super Paper Mario. Which. Weird that this has happened twice, right? Like. Two Mario RPGs (using that term insanely loosely for Super but u know what i mean!!), where the Mario Cast end up in an alternate world with blocky people who are under threat by a spooky guy in a top hat who wants to destroy the world, with major plot twists (that I won't get into) and the power of love is required to save the day. Like. I will not understand why this is a complaint about either game?? This is the POINT of going to an ALTERNATE WORLD!!!! Even if you do not like the design, don't act like the design being different is some weird freak accident. IT'S VERY INTENTIONAL. I love this game to death it made me sob my eyes out at the ending (it took me 10 days to beat, which is rare for me, as i tend to beat games in like 2 days). I have played every MNL game and this one is tied with PiT as my personal favorite. And I read this review to my partner, and they were losing their mind over some of what he was saying, despite the fact they are new to the series. We have turned "baby's first rpg" into a bit because it's silly. Like. The simplest mario RPG is like, the original one. Battle wise MnL has always been the most complex because you have to pay attention to both bros, the enemies attacks, dodging, and managing items and stuff. Regardless I adore this game to death as I said. I love it so much. It reminded me so much of SPM which is my comfort game, and MNL is my favorite Mario spinoff, so I am very happy that it exists.
tbh without playing, but watching a lets play of this for an hour or two I found myself agreeing with most of what the IGN reviewer said. the NPCs of concordia, the dialogue I also did not like one bit. Found the music, and the environment seemed incredibly bland. I don't think the game is necesarily awful(even the review score says "mediocre"), but really with the amount of games out there, I just couldn't find a single reason to justify putting my resources ($$ and time that would go into it) on this game versus any others. I would rather just play(or replay) Mario RPG or one of the first two Paper Marios. 😅 I suspect part of it is because I personally have no prior history in the Mario/Luigi series and nostalgia tends to plays a big role in most peoples gaming tastes. however The IGN reviewer stated he was a big fan of the series, and still didn't click with it.
My only complaints with the game are some questionable sound design choices, such as the horrendous tune used for the music note challenges (also lil PSA, btw: If you're going for a STACHE build and youre wearing headphones, dont first strike an enemy; your eardrums will thank you), and that Luigi Logic wasnt utilised _enough_ . Like, itd be cool if you could trigger it in regular fights by meeting certains conditions or something, idk Any other complaints Ive read/heard I just dont get. This game feels like Superstar Saga 2
I'm a huge Mario RPG fan. Haven't played all the mario and luigi games but I have a lot of respect for the early ones. I knew the moment I saw a 5/10 from IGN that there was no way that was correct. The game feels rushed and could be better. But that doesn't mean it's a bad game. Keep fightin' the good fight and keep IGN in their place.
I know these games were reviewed by two different people, but the fact that Brothership got a lower score than Paper Jam, the most boring game in the series, on the same site is baffling to me. Despite having a great combat system and Yoko Shimomura, Paper Jam definitely suffers from lacking any variety in its characters, world, and having an interesting story. It's even more unfortunate that it was a crossover of sorts with Paper Mario, but was full of wasted potential. It's basically just New Super Mario Bros. RPG. Brothership, despite it's slow start and not having Shimomura, excels over everything else Paper Jam lacked. A great story, tons of interesting and original characters, and a unique setting and world. And heck, I like Brothership's music. I respect Logan's opinion and the score he gives the game, but that doesn't mean I agree with him. He raises some valid points, but the rest of them feels overly exaggerated at best.
I do believe that Brothership is worse than these two games, but that's because Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario TTYD are just one of my top favorites rpgs in general, Brothership is still an very excellent game tho, it's the second best game of this franchise after Bowser inside's story imo.
9:11 yeah i don't get this complaint either. Like...that's what makes the puzzle semi challenging and rewarding? You're supposed to have good reaction times and observations for this game and the satisfaction comes from beating the puzzle, not making it hold your hand.
Ok I'm watching your video and will comment on your points, but at First I would like to note that I agree with IGN points, though I see the game more like 7/10. I liked art style and gameplay a lot, with great enjoyable boss fights as well. Here we go: - Sailing does not need to be like wind waker? Fair enough, but ny system in any game must serve a purpose, a FUN purpose. I always go through main story only in any game and sailing was a hindrance to that. It is just an animated loading screen in a way, circling around an island, missing it sometimes was not fun either, just padding to tell you that "Go do some side quests while dinner is getting ready" type of thing. I am sure that you cannot tell me you had FUN sailing, and "DIDN'T Bother me much" is not a a valid argument for it as it's the way for the whole game. if it was a temp measurement I would agree, but that waiting thing is a tedious mechanism without a purpose to the player to have fun out of it. And yes, FUN must be the point in almost everything the game introduces. - The game is too handholding, I cannot compare it to the other M&L games as I haven't played them, but when a note is valid it is valid regardless of whom done what. Because other games did it (I'm taking your word for it) does not make it ok. - Holding the B button: I did hold the B button, especially through the boring and padding chats between characters and it was still a pace killer. I would much preferred a skip button for the whole convos the same one as in cutscenes, that might helped pacing a bit. Let alone the non-funny old turnip that was made on purpose to be not funny, also with no reward or incentive. I keep sighing every single time I pulled it that I tried to avoid turnips later on. - I totally agree with IGN dude, story issss BAAAD, and you do not objectively say why it is not, you say just do not know what and how's. I read Technikky, IDOL and CHilliam Burnie story (bcuz I had to due to my previous point) and no, ZERO attachment and script couldn't be worse. To be fair, MAYBE there is no way to say what is a good story and was is not, you enjoy it good for you, you do not that's allowed to, but you can never say "HE is WRONG" about not liking it. It is his (and my) opinion. - Different looks, yes, unique? hell no. I can tell them apart, but a child of 5 yo can design better ones. Nintendo can do much better than blocky characters, it's their job not mine. - Locations are not bad but not good either, level design wise as well. Other than being theme red, they are not memorable in the slightest... while I can remember many Mario wonder locations or PM Ttyd after playing it for years. Levels were so safe, so for me not a complain but nothing to praise either. - Performance, I agree with you. - Luigi, I agree with you as well. - Old system: actually didn't understand this point from IGN guy, leaning to your opinion about it. Although I hated those M&L jumping pads. - Not supposed to work: I agree %100 with you, noticed that as well and thought that he didn't understand how it works. - Luigi Logic Animation, yeah boring padding. - Battle system was really good, like reaaallyy good. - Keeping wondering why IGN hated it does not go anywhere, he hated it because it is annoying, things take too long to have the good stuff. Plugs is about 10 hours into the game which is too much. And while hating characters is part of it, but the game's design doesn't make it better. Take this scenario, Connie (I think?) goes to the island, you must go after her, - Loading Screen+Pipes animations, you run slowly to find her, found her, an uninteresting thing remembered (yes I know what happens, still too forced), she thanks you, goes back to the ship, you run after her, loading screen+ pipes animations, you go to next island.... This alone is a mere example of padding and hindering pacing for a boring story, at least to us. - Score: 5 I think is going from frustration of the game rather than objective rating. I found two reviews that shows my opinion about it and rate it about 7-8, which I stand by 7/10 would be more appropriate. 5 is for games that had less than half of the effort put into this game. Didn't like it that much, but I had to admit that some parts of it were pretty good AKA battle system. I hope you read this and reply, thank you.
Thanks for taking the time to write all of that. Really enjoyed reading it. You made some very insightful and critical points. I obviously disagree with some of them, but I can see why you feel the way you do on everything. I HATED the turnip guy as well even as someone how liked the writing lol. The story is definitely our biggest disagreement. I know you said you haven't played other M&L games, but I think it's hard to say any of them have a better plot in my opinion. I hope you play more of the series! Seems like you'd enjoy some of the other games. I'd recommend Superstar Saga, Partners in Time, and Bowsers Inside Story. Definitely avoid Dream Team if the pacing bothered you in Brothership because the pacing is even worse in that one. Paper Jam is just mediocre. It has it's moments but how "nothing" that game is makes it baffling for me to see anyone call Brothership the worst in the series.
@@AustinSalyer Thank you for reading my comment and your kind reply. About the plot, as you noticed in my comment, I rated the story for what it is, I liked paper Mario Ttyd plot, Mario RPG simplistic plot but this one was not there. I am glad that you enjoyed reading my points as well. I might try other games in the series, but actually I got humongous backlog full with top quality RPGs that wait for me, Baldur's Gate 3 is one that I'm starting with soon lol. Thus I cannot rank it as best or worst as M&L series, but I totally believe it is below Paper Mario games (the good ones) and Mario RPG; as Mario RPG remake gives more time and focus towards more gameplay and fun, and less talking and padding which I appreciate a lot.
And you're wrong about IGN being wrong. They just didn't care enough to elaborate their points. 🤷 Anyone who's played Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story knows just how much Brothership leaves to desire in comparison. The performance in native hardware is gross (which is super annoying considering a slight overclock solves the issue), the progression is super slow (taking a ridiculous amount of time to unlock skills and spells), battle animations are slow, there's way too much handholding, and the isekai setting makes the worldbuilding irrelevant and uninteresting, something Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story handles much, much better.
i don’t get when nintendo stan channels get so upset over singular negative reviews. it’s one person’s subjective opinion, it can’t be wrong. every single point the IGN reviewer makes is based off of his experience and personal preferences. if you like the game, that’s fine; but if someone else doesn’t like the game because of its genuine glaring issues, then that’s okay too. their negative take doesn’t make it any less valid than the ones coming from nintendo fans who literally only play nintendo games, giving this a 9/10. for a turn based RPG, the fact there’s like 5-10 second loading screens to go in and out of battles is not only tedious and annoying, it’s embarrassing in 2024. the game being THIS handholdy, babified and constantly stopping you to give you unnecessary dialogue that doesn’t add anything is just annoying and gets old fast when the game is almost 40 hours long. if you like that, it’s fine, but it’s literally the biggest criticism with the game. opinions are fine.
Because a lot of his oppinions are blatantly wrong. Take his complaint about the platforming and tile puzzles. You don't, just stand waiting for Luigi to finish his part. You often times need use his platform to reach you next one. So he's following you. Then you follow him Or him saying luigi doesn't wait for you on the tile puzzles. He does.l uigi gives you a few seconds to reach your panel before he starts moving. The footage they use has them intentionally standing around like an idiot for the purpose of building that strawman of a point.
Yes. 1000% yes. Honestly, I feel at this point that people seem to ignore glaring issues with this game just to attack IGN. Like, there's several other sites that actually have bad credibility, but no, let's target the same old, same old. (Seriously though, 10 second load times for every single fight? Like... how do people find that okay?)
honestly, what do you expect from ign? ign is mostly wrong for the most part, to the point where most people who actually know doesn't take them serious anymore. it's been like this for years. i just feel bad for people who take ign seriously though
I agree with what they said but disagree with the 5 I would give it a 6/half maybe 7, I give partners in time a 7 superstar saga 8 and inside story a 9.5 this game feels new like a new mario spinoff series it did not feel like mario and luigi to me. Like I said in other comments this was a great mario game but a terrible mario and luigi I like the game but I can not as a fan of the first 3 call it a mario and luigi game
I mean they had some good points but they clearly didn’t care for the story yet complain about the people of CONCORDIA not looking like they are from the mushroom kingdom
You're making a big deal about pressing the A Button in battle for Luigi like come on it wasn't a big deal for me at all and it because you can't adapt to a tiny change.
@TheSpaghettGamer no you don't understand those are the only problems I have with the game that doesn't mean I don't like it hell I'm just excited that there is a new Mario and Luigi game
@@TheVirtualBlobfish That great glad to but I play through the entire game, and I didn't encounter problems besides one glitch in the final world where I get SoftLock when placing the lantern in wrong, but overall, I love this game.
Some ppl overly praise this game, particularly those who are unfamiliar with the series. As a Mario and Luigi game its not amazing. And mechanically, Luigi is handled kind of poorly. I stopped counting how many times he has held me up bc he couldnt manage to keep up, causing you to walk back towards him, often enough right off of the platforms you just traversed. Luigi ideas barely count as a mechanic, they just happen at scripted points. Locations are super generic, ice, lava, grass, sewers. The great conductor is just another version of the bird from dream team, with the exact same joke that they appear as these grand, important figures at first but turn out to be super chill. Has a small number of memorable characters tho, particularly the villains I really enjoyed and the final boss fight is awesome aswell as the ending, showing a newly planted unitree in the mushroom kingdom, even made me tear up just a little. But, most of what makes this game good is what already worked before. The majority of original ideas arent so great. The sidequests are padding for the most part, sending you on fetch quests and a bunch of long loading screens traveling between islands, the plot consists of mostly "please reconnect our world" and thats it. Calling the game fantastic, amazing or phenomenal really just hurts the meaning of those words and disrespects the actually phenomenal games in the series, particularly Bowsers Inside Story. The complete package is none of those things, its a mixed bag to end all mixed bags so IGNs review did not entirely miss the mark. Subjectively I like the game a lot more than I described, love the presentation and a return to the thick outlines artstyle the first three games had and its still a huge amount of fun. Its just that I have always had an objective, as well as a subjective opinion on games. Its a decent game and certainly not the worst in the series, better than paper jam without a doubt and on par with Dream Team. Frankly Im just happy that my favourite franchise is back and Im hopeful for the future.
A new not to watch that dumbass review until i finished the game lol. The game is great. Its obviously not superstar saga or inside story but you will probbaly never top those games.
for me i dont wanna play brothership when brothership got announced i got hyped i played thru the series loved superstar saga for the relationship between the bros and the creative attacks thought inside story was better on a gameplay front but sidelined the bros especially with starlow and strongly did not like dream team due to it feeling so long and dragged out and when this released i realized it was just dream team again snoutlet is still annoying and now theres only 10 bros attacks for a 30 hour game when nearly every other game has 16 5 out of 10 is harsh but i feel where the reviewer is coming from due to them having so long and not only falling into the same pitfalls but creating new ones to the point that a game boy advance game from over 20 years ago has more variety
I will give you that the bros attacks aren't the best they've been, but the battles as a whole are probably the best in the series due to the plugs. IGN couldn't have been more wrong about the characters/story. They are possibly the best in the series. The pacing, while not perfect, is much better than Dream Team's. I definitely wouldn't write Brothership off. It REALLY won me over in the end after going in somewhat pessimistic.
I'm 3/4 the way through brothership and the IGN review is very accurate. The characters are not interestingly written or designed. The game is a never ending onslaught of mostly uncompelling text and meandering busywork padding. History will not look favourably on this game.
@@elliotsturtplus340 Ok The characters are not interestingly written or designed. The game is a never ending onslaught of mostly uncompelling text and meandering busywork padding.
You know, it would be really nice if all the people making these kinds of hate bait comments would actually talk about the game in a more respectful and constructive manner, instead of going around just trashing on it for no real reason.
The Last Year of Mario RPG's RANKED - Out now!
th-cam.com/video/tnDLuB51Wls/w-d-xo.html
Tell me then. What island themes did you find compelling? What about it? What was your favourite joke? What were the best side quests?
If fans just give this thing a chance they'll love it.
nice review and profile picture screw IGN
Couldn't have said it any better myself.
I think most people who say "the story was bad" about video games mean "the story exists too much I should be able to literally just play the game." It's a way too common attitude in gamers that I know.
@@Lheticus it gets annoying when people say that sometimes
Okay the “first baby’s rpg” criticism for brothership to me seems to weird cuz the Mario RPGs in general is suppose to be a baby’s first rpg and you can’t say I’m wrong when a lot of people’s first game to the genre is usually these games lmao. The whole Mario and Luigi series same with paper Mario is made to be an entry point to the genre I hate to break it to the IGN guy lmao
"IGN is wrong"
Since when they are never wrong?
Since brothership dropped appearantly. It's not a 5. It's a solid 7.5 at worst. And they rated it low because it didn't have dei bs. So i'll take their opinion for what it is (trash) and just enjoy the game until the end.
*TOO MUCH WATER*

EXCUSE ME??
Is that Shy Guy attacking base on Mario Party? The Shy Guy Says minigame?
Brothership, 100/10
same guy gave paper jam and sticker star a good score
He’s talking out his ass for sure
Brothership is great
What hurts the most, is that IGN have greasily slithered their way onto Page One of Google over the years, and any rating that is below 50% is usually a Death Scentence for New and Original games like this that were made by a smaller studio with a relatively large budget.
IGN always sucks. It’s a pathetic company that doesn’t know anything about games. Look at cuphead, alien isolation. And now this…
Frankly, I recommend that you don’t listen to IGN, and to NOT let it affect your decision on giving a game a shot
Props to thegamebase for voicing out what a lot of people are thinking 👍
its really great i love it
@AustinSalyer it's a great i just hope it can continue more in the future
IGN gave Veilguard a 9.0 outta 5. That should say a lot
I got like 50 hours in this game.
IGN reviewers favorite M&L game has to be Paper Jam
I really hope Nintendo doesn’t bail from making another MAL game I really hope they try and make a new one for Switch 2 and improve from the *real but minor* issues brothership had
UNREALENGINES FAULT.
NOT THE GAME ITSELF
This game is wrestling with bowsers inside story for my favorite in the series.
Like they need the money that badly that they said this game was average :(
Uh, playing in portable in OLED doesn’t even have performance issues.
Sonic fans: “First time?”
I assure yall next game can easily be the best M&L game ever because they dis so many things right with this game.
ye ign is dum
I think you may deff be surprised by some bosses that were easy due to all the equips and bros attacks,
who become a harder challenge when those tools aren't available.
I'd also like to try to suggest doing a Jump/Hammer only run w/no bros attacks or gear, which's the hardest challenge the series has to offer.
as next to DS Bowser's inside Story, I can confirm Brothership's the only other game where this's completely possible
w/2-3 exceptions(Great conductor and the goomba+Koopa infinite wave.
I'd deff say try it at a later date to avoid burnout👍
I deff wish there was a boss rush too
I really liked the glohm enemies and how unique some of the enemies are like the zok troopers.
and while the faster timing of glohm enemies is deff easier in a sense to counter, some're deff tricky 🤔
Personaly im hoping for a mix of the old and new luigi platforming styles, allowing you to control luigi with the b button and jumping across gaps with your input like the older games, but then having luigi logic built in aswell that you can activate and allow luigi to seperate from mario and do his own ai pathing, i feel like thatd allow it to be less awkward feeling especially to previous players of the series, something i feel like would be a good idea also is to have a setting that you can switch between the brothership luigi pathing when following mario and a "Veteran" or "classic" mode for if you prefer to have luigi follow and be controlled by your input as some will differ between which style works for them
I can’t believe people still think IGN is even remotely credible. They haven’t been credible for the last 17 years, possibly longer.
they were wrong but the sales weren't
I hope the frame rate issues are fixed on the next Nintendo console
5/5 game.
I agree with mostly everything their review mentioned. Slow pace, weird control. Weird AI Luigi. But all of these doesnt make it 5/10. The game has moments where it's a 5 and moments where it's a 9. So it's at least a 7/10 for me.
This game is amazing, but it's one biggest flaw is having to press A for Luigi in battle menus
Now Mario fans know how sonic fans feel when sonic unleashed got reviewed.
Man, I kind of hate IGN. They gave my goat KH 2 a 7.6 out of ten, the lowest of all of the Kingdom Hearts series. KH2 is probably the most loved game in the while series, but I guess they disagreed
Wait who said Switch 2 will run Switch 1 games better? That's not necessarily true
The uh. CEO of Nintendo of Japan said that.
@@CassiusStelar I don't think he said anything except being backwards compatible
I never listen to anything IGN says, im hoping to get this game for christmas, otherwise I would have picked this game up already
I'm having a ball with this game. IGN blew it on this review, imo.
I've always stood up for IGN and liked Logan Plant. But his review is so off the mark is genuinely baffling. From missing the point of some of the gameplay, puzzles and visual design to downright coming across as if he didn't play any more than 5-7 hours. His review is truly appalling
For reference bal in wonderworld is a 5. This game is not bal that much i can assure.
For me the final part of the game honestly felt like a creepypasta and i loved it
This game became my all time favorite game to date.
Been playing this game every day. My gaming PC is collecting dust because of this one. Especially the special bro attacks.
I'm sorry they didn't like your horrible reboot of a game.
Wh wh wh whaaaaaattt???!!! IGN was wrong??? The same one that gave veilguard a 9 and concord a 7, that one???? Who would have seen that coming?????
Like, itd be cool if you could trigger it in regular fights by meeting certains conditions or something, idk
Any other complaints Ive read/heard I just dont get. This game feels like Superstar Saga 2
Yesterday 100% the game to , it is worth it and cool , idk why ign just are like this :/
Bonded to this game alot
Here we go:
- Sailing does not need to be like wind waker?
Anyone who's played Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story knows just how much Brothership leaves to desire in comparison.
He did tho, he is a person who played all of them and they have done iseakai with paper jam so they taking it another stab at it.
I personally love this game, and it far exceeded my expectations! I'm so glad there's others out there who love it as much as me!
He’s a boomer. Please man!! Roast this man and tell him that boomers should review activistion and ea reviews
i don’t get when nintendo stan channels get so upset over singular negative reviews.
it’s one person’s subjective opinion, it can’t be wrong. every single point the IGN reviewer makes is based off of his experience and personal preferences.
if you like the game, that’s fine; but if someone else doesn’t like the game because of its genuine glaring issues, then that’s okay too. their negative take doesn’t make it any less valid than the ones coming from nintendo fans who literally only play nintendo games, giving this a 9/10.
for a turn based RPG, the fact there’s like 5-10 second loading screens to go in and out of battles is not only tedious and annoying, it’s embarrassing in 2024.
the game being THIS handholdy, babified and constantly stopping you to give you unnecessary dialogue that doesn’t add anything is just annoying and gets old fast when the game is almost 40 hours long. if you like that, it’s fine, but it’s literally the biggest criticism with the game.
opinions are fine.
Did you play it?
Because a lot of his oppinions are blatantly wrong. Take his complaint about the platforming and tile puzzles.
You don't, just stand waiting for Luigi to finish his part. You often times need use his platform to reach you next one. So he's following you. Then you follow him
Or him saying luigi doesn't wait for you on the tile puzzles. He does.l uigi gives you a few seconds to reach your panel before he starts moving. The footage they use has them intentionally standing around like an idiot for the purpose of building that strawman of a point.
@@yeembusit sounds like they didn't
Yes. 1000% yes.
Honestly, I feel at this point that people seem to ignore glaring issues with this game just to attack IGN. Like, there's several other sites that actually have bad credibility, but no, let's target the same old, same old.
(Seriously though, 10 second load times for every single fight? Like... how do people find that okay?)
Because their opinion is based of things like the people of Concordia not looking like mushroom kingdom residents
ign is stupid, now tell me something thats new
You are speaking everything i was thinking when i was listening to the ign review well done man 👍
honestly, what do you expect from ign? ign is mostly wrong for the most part, to the point where most people who actually know doesn't take them serious anymore. it's been like this for years. i just feel bad for people who take ign seriously though
"IGN was wrong"
always has been
7:48 this point is one of the things I slightly dislike the other thing is that you have to press the A button to select things as Luigi in battles
Bro what frame rate issues??? I havent seen shit
I've seen some but I can't fault the game for it cause imaynotbeplayinonanintendoswitchnowhutimsayin?
Unrealengines is the Blame@@CassiusStelar
I would give this game 4 out of 10 personally
Its my favorite game!!
It's because the game wasn;t DEI enough, so they made it crappy on purpose
Literal soft spot on your head.
@CassiusStelar it's true though

I'm 3/4 the way through brothership and the IGN review is very accurate. The characters are not interestingly written or designed. The game is a never ending onslaught of mostly uncompelling text and meandering busywork padding. History will not look favourably on this game.
