I genuinely gotta respect the fact that Nintendo woke up and basically said”Hey, why don’t we please all the fans of each of the Mario rpgs “, probably one of their best recent decisions.
One thing I liked about the game is that the title screen and the title screen music changes depending on how far in the game you are. When you make it to the part where you meet Reclusa and he makes the Solitree, if you stay on the title screen for a few seconds, Reclusa shows up, starts taunting you and then he gets in your face and starts laughing at you. This game is peak.
I thought you would at least mention that but... There is a timed side quest that has "chippy" visiting bowser to check on him after bowser jr. was kidnapped. I love how this recognizes how bowsers inside story is part of the lore now and this scene ist ultra funny xD
It reminded me of the scene at the end of Bowser's Inside Story where "Chippy" visits Bowser just to make sure that he doesn't have any plans of causing trouble ... and also to deliver the cake to him. Gotta love Starlow.
A detail I adore is that Zokkets entire comedic gimmick (Constantly forgetting everyone's names) isn't just comedic, it just further reinforces Zokkets hatred of forming relationships with anyone.
In the past year we've gotten... The mario RPG remake. The thousand year door remake. AND a new mario and luigi game. The fact that we got all 3 of those in the span of a YEAR is insane. This really is the mario RPG comeback era.
brothership to me is the definition of a slow burn. it takes a while getting in but if you hold out for long enough and give it a chance you’re in for one of the best m&l experiences. aquire has this series in good hands personally
That's honestly my biggest problem with Brothership, the pacing. I'm only about 10 hours into the game and I am struggling to want to even continue the game. It's just so SLOW and BORING. I want to like it, but I am not having fun with how I feel so limited in the combat, even with the Battle Plugs. At least Paper Jam didn't have such a bad pacing issue.
Honestly? It's the opposite for me. The start didn't feel as dragging as people made it out to be, I wish you could get the first bros attack way earlier but besides that I found that to be fine. What I actually dislike was the endgame, it drags for far too long and feels like the game overstated it's welcome. (Spoilers) Reclusa is a boring villain that makes puns about loneliness non-stop and honestly his boss battle didn't feel as memorable nor as good as the previous entries. We have to go through an annoying backtracking (the rematch against gorumbla was great but everything else is boring), the soil tree is an annoying area with an annoying gimmick (I get the whole separate the brothers gimmick fits but it's done in such an annoying way that I wish it wasn't there at all) the story gets TOO in the nose with the whole "bonds are important". And there's more stuff I could point out.
@zacharylandrum4789 Same here. It's the same problem as Dream Team has. The pacing is awful in both games. Though I think Dream Team is worst because at least the padsing stuff & other side fetch in Brothership are optional and isn't handholding.
Probably because they happened while he blinked. I didn’t even realize the reference to Jr.’s Journey until another video pointed it out to me cause I never played that mode. Appreciated, to be sure, but not really changing the video substantially.
My favorite sidequest in the game is the one where Starlow goes to visit Bowser after he's inujured, casually revealing that they've stayed in touch ever since BiS and have enough of a weird friendship dynamic going on that Bowser still calls her Chippy and she brings him a spicy drumstick from BiS to heal up. I just thought that whole sequence was incredible.
Anthony: "the whimsy nature of past games doesn't appear here much, such as weird body alteration" Mario and Luigi turning into a UFO just to collect coins down a vent doesn't count as whimsical?
Fair enough. It took me around 20 hours to realize I hadn’t laughed a single time, and after that I started poking holes in the thing left and right. But up until then? Yeah it was just nice to be back.
I'll admit I did things hella slow, but that was only until the first bros moves were acquired Cause man it felt like I was stuck with single target moves for a looooong time in the beginning
Same for me here. I usually take multiple months to finish a game, because I want to relish 'em. I'm still in the first half of Brothership, so I didn't really feel the slow pacing at the beginning.
Honestly, the final goodbye sequence is one of the most amazing of it's kind I've ever seen in a video game. It ties EVERYTHING together, and really makes you feel like you left a huge impact on the world. One of my favorite parts about it has got to be niche characters that only show up in side quests coming back here as well. For example, there's one side quest where you're tasked with giving a "ultra-sweet super-rich cake" to a kid on Desolatt Island, which you get from Lottacoins Island. It's a simple side quest, and it's over shortly, but during the final goodbye, the kid comes back and tells you that your one kind deed led him to becoming a successful food critic. It's such a small thing, and you probably don't even remember the side quest the kid is from by the end of the game, but it goes to show how much you've really connected everyone around Concordia, even the lives of people you barely know having been changed for the better thanks to the bros' actions.
Brothership is basically the Skyward Sword of M&L (maybe even Mario RPGs in general). Painfully slow beginning. Really solid middle once it hits its stride. Endgame that drags on for way too long. A finale that bangs so hard it almost makes you forget about all the pacing issues.
I'm going to be absolutely honest I LOVED the slow pacing, it made me appreciate everything the game offered much more and enjoy my time, it felt so good to progress higher and higher levels of quality This is my #1 in the series idc
My friends and I keep talking about how perfect a Wario & Waluigi game would be, especially after Brothership and its themes of companionship and unity. A game with Wario & Waluigi acting as the complete antithesis of that theme, with these two failing to work together and getting more aggressively angry, is ripe for comedic potential.
Wario and Waluigi don't have a game, Wario has his own personal game "aka" WarioWare Waluigi's only put in Mario games unless it's: Mario party Mario strikers or any other sport As well as the Olympic games
@@benjaminschmitt1562 Honestly, I would love to see a Mario and Luigi game with Wario and Waluigi after Brothership. A game starring the 4 plumber bros is long overdue
ehh … The thing is, Nintendo really doesn’t tend to do comedy well. Individual series will sometimes hit on something (EarthBound, Paper Mario) but most of their games aren’t well written enough to make more than the simplest jokes land. “He’s right behind me isn’t he” is actually MORE advanced humor than The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which plays the original “she’s behind me!” joke straight. Mario & Luigi humor is probably the weakest of any Mario RPG series, so it falls more in that second category. WarioWare, especially current WarioWare, is the same thing. A Wario RPG would probably feel obnoxious and way too proud of itself for coming up with that gimmick.
I think the thought process behind the less prevalent comedic style the series is known for, as well as the deeper exploration of character AND the less cynical tone of brothership, is a push to shake off the overly mean-spirited and uncomfortable tone of Paper Jam, with is not only the weakest game in the series because of it's lack of personality in the world and story, but also with fact it was way too harsh towards Luigi, and went way too far in the cynicism. So in this game, there's a far more hopeful and optimistic tone, and characters show genuine respect towards Luigi.
I think the cynicism went hand in hand with Paper Jam’s forced unoriginality. “Generic Mario is great! Bowser sure is bad! Luigi sure is a loser! Mario-but-paper sure is interesting! All these characters and ideas are only allowed to be one thing and you’re sure going to like it, because we said so!”
@thatdanjamesguy.330 exactly, it's like Luigi was constantly punished for being the most genuine and endearing character. Paper jam also has the worst version of Starlow, who just started completely mocking Luigi, even when he was right or did nothing to warrant her mockery.
The Mario & Luigi series have always put focus on the bros working together, but with the exception of a couple of moments in like Superstar Saga or Dream Team, this is like the first time I felt that theme was part of the STORY. This game's plot really shows up fantastically how much the brothers care for one another and how important that is, together through thick and thin. It was never something I questioned but they did such a good job on just showing us how much that is important. As a younger brother myself it truly spoke to me
Me during the first half of Mario & Luigi Brothership: “Okay. This is kinda mid, but I like it.” Me at various points throughout the second half of Mario & Luigi Brothership: “I owe you an apology-I was NOT familiar with your game!”
This comment alone has me wanting to continue, I’m nearly half way through the game and the “mid but I like it” has definitely worn off, knowing it gets much more interesting is great to hear
One of my favorite things about this game is how human Mario and Luigi are in it. They're gods who defy power scaling, sure, but stuff like Glohm or the endgame shows that they're as vulnerable to these things as the people they constantly help and care for. It really supports the idea that they're ordinary people who keep defying the odds no matter how extraordinary the situation and I love that about them.
One of the most compelling things about the oldest Mario RPGs, especially the first Paper Mario, is how they depict Mario as just this guy who can be relied upon to do the right thing. In trouble? He’s got you. But there’s nothing pretentious about him. He’s like classic Superman if everyone knew him as Clark Kent.
I’m really excited to see what’s next for the series (if there is anything). Acquire’s first attempt was really good, but there’s obviously room for improvement. So I’m definitely hoping they listen to the criticisms and make the best game they can. And I hope they decide to bring in more AlphaDream veterans next time.
20:52 to be fair, mario did see his brother disappear entirely, and being in an entirely new world, Luigi could be anywhere. I'm pretty sure anyone would be worried at that point.
This is a REALLY confusing point to me, especially Antdude calling it "uncharacteristic." Wasn't there an entire movie about Mario being separated from Luigi and being worried about him and trying to save him?
@@theivoryguy2476 Wouldn't be the first time he's said something that was either flat out wrong or didn't make any sense. In his Dream Team video he literally played footage of the one single bat attack Antasma does twice and didn't show any of his other attacks, claiming that the fight was the same as the tutorial one at the start of the game.
Yeah that was without a doubt his worst video. I hate how he blindly praises Bowsers inside story and ignores its flaws while looking at dream team through the angriest lens imaginable
For a first try at a new developer for the Mario and Luigi series they did a really good job. The game isn’t perfect by any means but what Brothership offers is a really solid foundation for the future of the series. If Acquire just listens to the feedback from Brothership then it’s only getting better from here.
Thanks for giving this game a 100% authentic full review. Everyone talks about the performance, the hand-holding, but very few actually play through the whole story before they review a game. Thanks for the review
I'm not sure if that's really the Bros' ideal reality, though. I see it as Reclusa's idea of what the Bros' ideal reality is. And it seems to me like Reclusa got it wrong, since the Bros fight to get out of it as soon as they're in it.
@@Jayseypoo My take away was that it actually is their ideal reality, but they know Bowser would never decide to play nice. Reclusa just didn't know how deep the rivalry ran and when he tried to fix it, the Bros were already determined to get out
7:06 you need to learn about the development of that game,ILCA was put in a very bad position because they were only given a year of development time that started in the middle of the pandemic and the game wasn't allowed to be delayed.
Less. BDSP was developed in like 8 months and was rushed more than you can ever believe. Illca are good developers. While still a gacha game, Pokemon Masters EX is not only one of the most ambitious non-hoyoverse gachas, but also one of the most ambitious Pokemon games. Amazing original songs and remixes, amazing graphics (for a mobile game), and actually gave most if not all of the silent protagonists canon personalities. It's also the ONLY Pokemon game with voice acting and gave official voices to many of the characters who didn't have a voice beforehand! I'm not that familiar with Illca's other works, but honestly GameFreak itself has a much more iffy record with disasters like Little Town Hero and nearly every Pokemon game released since BW2. Arzest would honestly be the worst devs to make the new Mario and Luigi, not Illca. Besides BDSP, Illca has a pretty good track record, unlike Arzest who'a developed almost exclusively crap, most of which being Nintendo's all time worst games. New Yoshi's Island, Chibi Robo Zip Lash, Hey Pikmin, Balan Wonderworld, and most recently Sonic Superstars. Arzest developing new Mario and Luigi would be a DISASTER.
36:03 I can explain the snaptors, actually. For that specific attack, the snaptor will look at one of the brothers and then either attack him or the other based on how its head moves. If it just winds its head up straight back, it'll hit whichever brother it's looking at. If it shakes its head while winding up, it'll hit the _other_ brother. For example, if it's looking at Mario and winds up without shaking, it'll hit Mario. If it shakes its head "no" while looking at Mario, it'll hit Luigi, and vice versa.
51:00 (This is part of the spoiler, so I'll give it some space..) When I reached this part, my first thought was that Reculsa sent us back so we wouldn't deal with its plan. When I saw Peach, I literally went, "OH NO WE'RE IN THE LOTUS EATERS!"
20:50 Dude, Mario watched Luigi disappear out of the inside of a portal, and woke up on a remote island in the middle of nowhere. If Mario didn’t care where Luigi was then he would not be human. I’d be freaking out if I was in that kind of situation. I for one- welcome this new age where Nintendo allows Mario to have a personality and show that he loves and cares/worries about his brother. U.U
Are we not gonna talk about the fake out Idle death right before the second great lighthouse? That was shocking and hilarious, I had just started telling some other people playing the game that I was really starting to like them. Then right afterwards the game made it seem like they were blown up.
Wait, are they actually decanonizing generic Mario? Implying it’s a sterile illusion of the real thing? That’s actually incredible, way more interesting than I would expect Nintendo to even allow a Mario game to be.
22:17 I absolutely love that he’s using spoilers: Chase down Reclusa! It’s one of my favorite songs from the game, and that phase is one of my favorites as well, good job!
It’s very obvious to say that we’re so back. Honestly the only thing they could do to make us RPG fans even happier is putting the characters from those games into other spin-offs like Mario Kart. 4:37 What the hell was with Europe and their renaming of certain titles anyways?
My assumption in terms of the localisation was that Nintendo of Europe was the main head for localisations and then Nintendo America would tweak the localisations so they were more faithful to American English. I think nowadays, though, they’re two separate localisation divisions. I’m fairly certain NoE is usually more faithful to the Japanese, with NoA being more liberal with its translations. In most cases, its actually America that is changing the titles, hence why brothership is not Brothership bros (in Japan, it’s also just brothership, yet paper jam bros, in Japan is Paper Mario mix so it makes sense).
I think it’s because for some European countries with laws against homosexuality, they want to make sure everyone knows Mario & Luigi are brothers and not gay. As stupid as that idea sounds, I can see that being a concern for them.
I'm fairly new to Mario and Luigi, and the only game I played before this was Superstar Saga. While I definitely liked it, Brothership in my opinion was WAY better. It definitely takes a while to get going, but even in those slower moments at the beginning of the game, I kind of enjoyed them. And man, once it picks up, it REALLY picks up. I loved how every character felt important to the story. Even ones that I didn't expect, like Chilliam and Burnadette. The battle system was really fun as were the boss fights, Luigi Logic is an excellent mechanic, and the endgame was probably one of my favorites in the entire franchise. Overall, I think Mario & Luigi: Brothership is a great game. It's got pacing issues, but I loved it all the same.
Curious to hear if there are specific things you think Brothership does better than Superstar (I probably won’t agree, but that’s okay cause opinions are cool).
@@BlueDragoon97 I think Brothership's battle system was way more fun, with the Battle Plugs adding so much to the combat. It was fun to experiment with all kinds of combinations to see how I could quickly take out even the toughest enemies. SuperStar Saga's combat was great too, but I think what Brothership offered made them even more fun. I especially found the boss fights to be better than SuperStar Saga's, especially the final boss. I feel like I connected with Brothership's NPCs more as I genuinely wanted to learn more about them and help them with their problems. I don't need to feel attached to the NPCs for me to enjoy the story, especially in a Mario RPG, but Brothership did a really good job of that, even if it took a bit. I still love SuperStar Saga though (I might replay it after Brothership), and I think it does some things better than Brothership, such as better pacing and humor, more memorable music, and I think I prefer Cackletta to Zokket, even if I liked Zokket a fair bit. Either way, I loved both games, and they made me excited to play the other ones. Maybe my opinion on Brothership will change a bit once I do, but who knows.
I love reclusa. He reminds me of bill cipher from gravity falls. One of the reasons why is because they can be so expressive despite their simplistic designs. I also love his design. It’s a like a hybrid between a god and a maniacal jester.
Considering that this game was developed during the covid epidemic, do you think the developers tried to tell a heartful story of forming bonds with the people you care for and not to isolate yourself fully from a small disease that doesn't really mean a lot in the long run?
You're underestimating how dangerous COVID was in the early years. By late 2022 the virus has evolved to only be about as dangerous as the common flu, but before then COVID was super dangerous. It could easily kill you if you were old, young, or already sick. Millions died. Viruses don't evolve to become more dangerous, they evolve to become more contagious, often times sacrificing their potency for increased sustainability, since a host dying is actually the opposite of what a virus has to do to survive. So by late 2022 COVID wasn't dangerous anymore and we could all return to normal. The only reason why pandemic season lasted 2 years in America rather than the 6 months of lockdown seen in countries like Japan, Germany, and Australia is because of stupid people refusing to wear masks or take vaccines. Heck, the pandemic practically supercharged the anti-vaxx movement in America turning it from a fringe conspiracy theory to a mainstream right wing political stance talked about on national TV. Americans are freaking stupid.
49:30 It was kind of implied that he did have a depressing backstory. When he said that 'connections and being bound to others is a pain' sort of implied that he's had a connection before (that's why he knows what it's like) and was possibly hurt by it, being the reason that he hates bonds now and went crazy because of it. But yeah he's basically a psychopath lol
Yesterday I just wasn't feeling the game, I'm about 25 hours in, and thought about dropping it, but I think I may give it another push to see it through thanks to you, I'm stopping the video before the spoiler section and will come back when I finish.
(SPOILERS) One thing to note is that the Glohm debuff also completely disables combo attacks on the enemy side; Zokket and Bowser enemies are build around attacking alongside each other, but when they have the glohm debuff, they're only ever attack solo (or even create clones to attack with)
@FelisImpurrator it gets better! Certain enemies that can support their allies (like Hydro Seedlings healing others) will never happen when they're Glohmed
@@OriginalGameteer That's some good attention to detail since once you get past the point of no return where all of Concordia gets Glohmed you have no real reason to go back where you can find those enemies.
...it took me watching this video to realise that the ocean is just a big ol' circuit board with multiple CURRENTS running through it. the puns in this game run deep. (like the ocean)
ant: mentions luigi's italian gibberish me: but can you actually do it yet? ant immediately after: attempts and fails AGAIN me: falls out of chair laughing
It kinda feel underwhelming that at the final battle (SPOILERS) . . . . . . You never use the Luigi Logic as the final gimmick to finish Reclusa, instead you just press the button to hit it with the hammers. Missed potential right there
To be fair I think they can make Luigi Logic work as a tandem move for a final attack where its Luigi's idea but he needs Mario to do it this time (although some Luigi Logic attacks do need Mario to make them work to be fair).
59:38 Yeah, when you really think about it, the Switch actually now has probably the best and biggest lineup of Mario RPGs with not a single objectively bad or mid entry (Origami King was good and I will forever die on this hill).
Usually I prefer having original enemies over the staple Mario enemies that we already know, but in Brothership I loved how Bowser's Minions have been a late game enemy type, allowing them to shine much more than being placed in the beginning and being forgettable fodder
THIS. At first I was worried we weren't gonna get "interesting" versions of Bowser's troops like the sick Thwomps, the Chuboombas, etc, but now that I've beaten the game I can say I love the way Bowser's troops were integrated into the story. Not just enemies, but people
The next thing we need to complain about is getting a good Sonic RPG with the same amount of love, polish and whimsy that these Mario RPGs have. If Mario can do it, so can Sonic. Also, thanks for convincing me to buy the game. I wasn't sure before, but now I want this game on my shelf.
Man, I just finished playing brothership the other day and I was completely blown away. It just goes to show you how much they care about these series since I didn't think we'd ever see another Mario and Luigi game again ever since alphadream went bankrupt and the 3ds died but after playing this I was wrong, and I can't wait to see what they'll come up with next
Hell yeah, dude! I'm glad you're talking about this game. I honestly love the writing and characters here. I got emotional at the end as well! I feel like people will do a HUGE disservice to themselves if they don't play this game. Honestly, it does drag a bit at first, but the latter half of the game is so so SO worth it.
I remember as soon as i saw the characters, i knew it was going to be about forming connections. Using electrical equipment as a metaphor for making friendships... and they did that... in such a puntastic way
I'm pretty sure the performance issues aren't related to "just Shipshape" as you mentioned, but the fact the game has severe input lag spikes at critical moments, even in battle.
Man, the story in Brothership is so PEAK! I get the sense that it was probably being conceptualized in 2020, when the pandemic had EVERYONE feeling so miserable and isolated, so the themes that they put in here really hit home, because the writers genuinely felt it! They realized how important connections are and how detrimental isolation can be, and they were able to write a fantasy story that perfectly illustrates those concepts! I agree when you say that this is probably the strongest story in the ENTIRE Mario franchise! Heck, it might even be up there with the best in the Zelda series, in terms of the impact its story had on my psyche!
@@mscup8814 I mean, neither of them would be my first choice, but I guess that’s fair. But if Ant can diss the series for dunking on Luigi, we can diss him for dunking on ILCA.
7:03 fun fact: ILCA can actually makes good games, it just so happens that when you ask someone to make a remake of pokemon diamond and pearl and not platinum, you get a crappy game
There’s that, but I’ve also heard rumors about when they made BDSP. The rumors in question were that they only made it under the most firm of leashes from game freak. In essence, it was just another rushed game freak Pokémon game.
This is the only Nintendo game I returned before finishing, I was 30h in and I just couldn't continue. The pacing is the simplest way to describe the issues, but it's another way to say everything is so slow. The battles, the traversal. Everything is molasses. Thanks for the video though, I've been eagerly waiting to hear your thoughts and see the ending
Where did you figure that out? Must’ve pulled it out of thin air, because I can think of a plentiful bosses across the series which do exactly that. Giant piranha plant, giant wiggler, giant pokey, king boo (if it counts), giant goomba, giant bowser (at a stretch) and all the giant papercrafts if we want to get technical…
20:56 *Is* it uncharacteristic of him tho? The last thing he saw was his brother literally *disintegrating* right in front of him. For all he knew, Luigi could’ve been DEAD. It would've been way more uncharacteristic of Mario to NOT worry about his brother’s safety and fate in this situation.
I never gotten the opportunity to play a legit Mario & Luigi game, and after so long and awaited patience, I am excited. Seems like the game looks and sounds great! Maybe not so much in pacing, but I probably won't care as much. I feel like Nintendo is starting to really listen to their fans, and I like it already, and even Acquire also cares. Everyone's got their personal preference when it comes to video games, or things they enjoy doing, and I'm okay with that!
The more i played Brothership, the more i fell in love with it It has everything i wanted and more for a M&L game Intriguing story, fun gameplay, unique characters, spotlight for Luigi, little screentime for Starlow, retconning of Paper Jam, Everything i wanted of M&L
Short Answer: Nothing is significantly original or noteworthy from Paper Jam so it’s easy to act like it doesn’t exist in the continuity; whether or not it actually was retconned can be easily said for either argument because PJ has nothing important to claim to fame about, and thus contribute to the M&L continuity Paper Jam was just “another day in the Mushroom Kingdom of Peach getting captured by Bowser go save her (oh but this time half of everything is Paper)” compared to the themes and plots of Dream Team, Bowser’s Inside Story, Partners in Time, or Super Star Saga
Hard disagree on the sea navigation. Aside from the early game when there were not a lot of islands to backtrack, I never found myself waiting to reach the next island. Once a new current was discovered, I set course for it and started doing whatever side content was available. Once I was on a current with an undiscovered island, I just stayed on the current until I was done with the side content available. You don’t need to be at the telescope when an island is detected.
Playing this game is almost like watching One Piece. It moves at a snail's pace, but at least you know that every main island you visit is unique in its own way. The side characters are also intriguing: Technikki, the IDLE Group, Buddy and his friendship with Bowser Jr., Burnadetta and Chilliam.
Is it just me or has anyone else notice they've been giving Bowser Jr a lot more character development lately? First Mario + Rabbids, then the side mode of the Bowser's Inside Story remake, and now Brothership. It felt like after Sunshine, Bowser Jr just existed as a glorified Koopaling who also had the privilege of appearing in spin off games
I'm glad that Nintendo is FINALLY starting to listen to us Mario RPG fans what we've wanted in a long time! Interesting characters instead of generic Toads & enemies, new places that don't feel like a NSMB, stories that don't feel bare bones, & a true RPG battle system! How is this real!?!
Yeah… this game is just simply amazing. I would do anything just to be able to get the feeling of playing the game for the first time again. Simply a masterpiece.
Aaah yeah, It’s about the time again guys, We’re finally back reviewing the Mario and Luigi series after all these years. You know it’s REALLY unfortunate that the Remakes didn’t get the sales they deserved, albeit they WERE unfortunately stuck on The 3DS.
Honestly love how this game has a sense of continuity. Though older adventures only had small throwaway references, such as Bowser's Inside Story and Paper Jam, I appreciate Starlow being there and sort of a mainstay now while also THANKFULLY not being a partner, as well as Bowser's Minions and especially Bowser Jr.'s story being referenced in a way that adds to the story imo. Weird omissions of the Koopalings or the specific minions though
I feel like most of it is surface-level at best though. When I did Starlow’s side quest, I thought it was gonna be a really cool emotional beat, but less than 5 minutes later it was over and I was like “that’s it?”
As someone who has spent a total of over 800 hours on the Xenoblade Chronicles games. And happily may I add. I found Brothership's pacing completely fine :v
@doubleasworkshop1692 There's a difference gameplay style between Xenoblade & Mario & Luigi and while Xenoblade can be a excuse as to why they pacing is there; for better or for worst, Mario & Luigi has no business having a pacing being a slog.
I really could not get the same excitement out of the story as you did, i was so fed up with it that by the time it started to get good i became hyper critical about it
Fun fact about the Red and Green shell you might have not noticed on your first playtrough (or late in the game). While the Green Shell is multi hit, the attack is grounded, while the Red Shell can also hits single enemies but also hit airborn ones
I fail to understand why Beans don't make sense past the first game. That's like saying Mushrooms don't make sense in any areas besides the Mushroom Kingdom. Yet it's not seen as abnormal to see Mushrooms in the Beanbean Kingdom or Pi'illo Island, so Beans make just as much sense to be present as Mushrooms. On a side note, technically by that logic, neither would make sense to be in Brothership considering they're in a whole other world without Toads or Beanish people. There's no Mushroom area or Bean area, but we just kinda accept it.
There are a couple of moment where I was: "wow it sure is great that in this totally different dimension they use the same type of items as in our dimension, what a coincidence" 😅
as an RPG stan who loved the Mario RPG series, it really has felt like a dream... like an ALPHADREAM that this series has been resurrected from the grave outta nowhere. we fans have talked our collective heads off, wanting to see these games Remastered as well as to give us new Mario RPGs and suddenly it has happened.
19:52 HOLY SHIT how to get me instantly interested in an OST. Dialga's Fight to the Finish is, in my opinion, Pokemon's equivalent of "in the final." Just so damn dramatic and climactic in a game where you really dont expect it.
I genuinely gotta respect the fact that Nintendo woke up and basically said”Hey, why don’t we please all the fans of each of the Mario rpgs “, probably one of their best recent decisions.
Now if only they would bring back Wario Land. At least we have Pizza Tower and Antonblast

It reminded me of the scene at the end of Bowser's Inside Story where "Chippy" visits Bowser just to make sure that he doesn't have any plans of causing trouble ... and also to deliver the cake to him. Gotta love Starlow.
i love that as well
A detail I adore is that Zokkets entire comedic gimmick (Constantly forgetting everyone's names) isn't just comedic, it just further reinforces Zokkets hatred of forming relationships with anyone.
In the past year we've gotten...
The mario RPG remake.
The thousand year door remake.

brothership to me is the definition of a slow burn. it takes a while getting in but if you hold out for long enough and give it a chance you’re in for one of the best m&l experiences.
aquire has this series in good hands personally
That's honestly my biggest problem with Brothership, the pacing. I'm only about 10 hours into the game and I am struggling to want to even continue the game. It's just so SLOW and BORING. I want to like it, but I am not having fun with how I feel so limited in the combat, even with the Battle Plugs. At least Paper Jam didn't have such a bad pacing issue.
Unless Sony buys them then Mario and Luigi is maybe dead
@@zacharylandrum4789That’s unfortunate. I hope you find something that you like.
Honestly? It's the opposite for me.
The start didn't feel as dragging as people made it out to be, I wish you could get the first bros attack way earlier but besides that I found that to be fine.
What I actually dislike was the endgame, it drags for far too long and feels like the game overstated it's welcome.
(Spoilers)
Reclusa is a boring villain that makes puns about loneliness non-stop and honestly his boss battle didn't feel as memorable nor as good as the previous entries.
14:50 you forgot to mention that Starlow does a reference to BiS in the late game, and Kamek also mentions something he said in Bowser Jr's Journey

Mario and Luigi turning into a UFO just to collect coins down a vent doesn't count as whimsical?
There's a literal guy who is a walking TV who turns into a seed
Yeah, brothership literally AMPED UP the cartoony body alteration compared to past games
What’s crazy is that I didn’t even notice the slow pacing in the beginning. I was just enjoying having a new Mario and Luigi game to play 😂
Fair enough. It took me around 20 hours to realize I hadn’t laughed a single time, and after that I started poking holes in the thing left and right. But up until then? Yeah it was just nice to be back.
Patience is a virtue. Dream Team taught us that valuable lesson
@@BlueDragoon97 That's honestly a you problem lmao
I'll admit I did things hella slow, but that was only until the first bros moves were acquired
Cause man it felt like I was stuck with single target moves for a looooong time in the beginning
A Renaissance has begun. Let us revive the legends. Once again, we are hooked on the brothers...
"Swing Your Arms From Side to Side, Do The Mario! All Together Now! Take One Step And Back Again, Do The Mario!"
Considering next year is Mario's 40th anniversary, we really are only just getting started.
Brothership is basically the Skyward Sword of M&L (maybe even Mario RPGs in general).
Painfully slow beginning. Really solid middle once it hits its stride. Endgame that drags on for way too long. A finale that bangs so hard it almost makes you forget about all the pacing issues.
I would also add Wind Waker since the game also involved sailing and that could be a slog.
Though Brothership doesn't have the imprisoned so it's automatically better
@autismandgaming4532 Instead it has the Dyode rhythm minigames.
I'm going to be absolutely honest
I LOVED the slow pacing, it made me appreciate everything the game offered much more and enjoy my time, it felt so good to progress higher and higher levels of quality
This is my #1 in the series idc
My friends and I keep talking about how perfect a Wario & Waluigi game would be, especially after Brothership and its themes of companionship and unity. A game with Wario & Waluigi acting as the complete antithesis of that theme, with these two failing to work together and getting more aggressively angry, is ripe for comedic potential.
released on aprils fools of course
The crutch of the game being wario abusing walugi using his lanky body for javelin toss
Wario and Waluigi don't have a game, Wario has his own personal game "aka" WarioWare Waluigi's only put in Mario games unless it's:
Mario party
Mario strikers or any other sport
As well as the Olympic games
As a younger brother myself it truly spoke to me
Me during the first half of Mario & Luigi Brothership:
“Okay. This is kinda mid, but I like it.”
Me at various points throughout the second half of Mario & Luigi Brothership:
“I owe you an apology-I was NOT familiar with your game!”
This comment alone has me wanting to continue, I’m nearly half way through the game and the “mid but I like it” has definitely worn off, knowing it gets much more interesting is great to hear
@BayleafMoon the final act of the game leading up to the final boss is actually peak mario and luigi ngl
Potonotunanasanatunakananalanasananasaradinanarapatanitiniti
definitely starts slow, maybe a bit too slow, but again they kinda had a lotta new things going on.
@@BayleafMoonimo it does not get better as you play. It’s just more of the same.
No spoilers but the final chunk of this game (and ESPECIALLY the ending omg) are genuinely the best of any Mario game
That's interesting I feel it starts to drag towards the end.
@ I mainly mean the final dungeon + boss and ending
I’m really excited to see what’s next for the series (if there is anything). Acquire’s first attempt was really good, but there’s obviously room for improvement. So I’m definitely hoping they listen to the criticisms and make the best game they can. And I hope they decide to bring in more AlphaDream veterans next time.
20:52 to be fair, mario did see his brother disappear entirely, and being in an entirely new world, Luigi could be anywhere. I'm pretty sure anyone would be worried at that point.
This is a REALLY confusing point to me, especially Antdude calling it "uncharacteristic."
Wasn't there an entire movie about Mario being separated from Luigi and being worried about him and trying to save him?
@@theivoryguy2476 Wouldn't be the first time he's said something that was either flat out wrong or didn't make any sense. I think it's interesting that the Mario Bros ideal reality is the Mushroom Kingdom and Bowser's Kingdom living in peace.
It is really cool but remember when mario melted off bowsers skin
These things happen :)
51:00 (This is part of the spoiler, so I'll give it some space..)
When I reached this part, my first thought was that Reculsa sent us back so we wouldn't deal with its plan.
I may be the only one who noticed that the Mushroom kingdom in the post-credit cutscene is the same as Mario Odyssey.
And the fake/Reclusa variant of the Mushroom Kingdom is the safe, sterile New Super Mario Bros. version.
@@scopicaplays Oh my god
That's such a meta part of this story but it works so well
Wait, are they actually decanonizing generic Mario? Implying it’s a sterile illusion of the real thing? That’s actually incredible, way more interesting than I would expect Nintendo to even allow a Mario game to be.
I noticed it immediately from the fountain + bridges and squealed with delight at inter-series continuity!

It’s very obvious to say that we’re so back. Honestly the only thing they could do to make us RPG fans even happier is putting the characters from those games into other spin-offs like Mario Kart.
4:37 What the hell was with Europe and their renaming of certain titles anyways?
Agreed with hoping they bring back these characters, because man do I need more Technikki in my life
My assumption in terms of the localisation was that Nintendo of Europe was the main head for localisations and then Nintendo America would tweak the localisations so they were more faithful to American English.
Don't forget Luigi's Mansion 2 was originally only a Europe title.
I was not expecting the new big bad of Mario & Luigi to be the freak child of Kefka & Wheatley
Man it feels oh so good to finally have this series back once again.
Considering that this game was developed during the covid epidemic, do you think the developers tried to tell a heartful story of forming bonds with the people you care for and not to isolate yourself fully from a small disease that doesn't really mean a lot in the long run?
So, it's Mario and Luigi: Death Stranding?
Absolutely, we did say at some point that games developed during that specific time frame would be impacted in more ways than one.
@@FelisImpurratorEven has the same pacing issues lmao.

One thing to note is that the Glohm debuff also completely disables combo attacks on the enemy side; Zokket and Bowser enemies are build around attacking alongside each other, but when they have the glohm debuff, they're only ever attack solo (or even create clones to attack with)

It's not underwhelming at all, it's way more fitting that they both finish him off instead of just having Luigi get the idea.
Nah, I’d say what they did is better since it’s both of them finishing off Reclusa than Luigi being the one who mainly did it
To be fair I think they can make Luigi Logic work as a tandem move for a final attack where its Luigi's idea but he needs Mario to do it this time (although some Luigi Logic attacks do need Mario to make them work to be fair).
59:38 Yeah, when you really think about it, the Switch actually now has probably the best and biggest lineup of Mario RPGs with not a single objectively bad or mid entry (Origami King was good and I will forever die on this hill).
One hour of M&L Antdude goodness we are SO BACK BROS

There’s that, but I’ve also heard rumors about when they made BDSP. The rumors in question were that they only made it under the most firm of leashes from game freak. In essence, it was just another rushed game freak Pokémon game.
@@TrinityCore60yeah, the concept art for BDSP shows that ILCA had a much grander vision of what they wanted to do, they just weren’t given enough time
Well 2
This is the only Nintendo game I returned before finishing, I was 30h in and I just couldn't continue. The pacing is the simplest way to describe the issues, but it's another way to say everything is so slow. The battles, the traversal. Everything is molasses.
Thanks for the video though, I've been eagerly waiting to hear your thoughts and see the ending
Fun fact:
Aside from the scutlet boss from bis, mega snaptor is the only boss in the series where it's mega variantion of a normal enemy
@Just_Shaun all those don't count because they all had special mechanics that make it more than just an beeeeeg enemy.
Not sure I would really say that since Mega Snaptor's design is a fair bit different than the average snaptor.
So happy to have an early Christmas present in this review :')
Antdude Advertisement: “chances are you like food.”
Me, actually licking my plate: “Ah, an ad for me!”
The more i played Brothership, the more i fell in love with it
It has everything i wanted and more for a M&L game
Intriguing story, fun gameplay, unique characters, spotlight for Luigi, little screentime for Starlow, retconning of Paper Jam,
Everything i wanted of M&L
How did they retcon paper jam
Short Answer: Nothing is significantly original or noteworthy from Paper Jam so it’s easy to act like it doesn’t exist in the continuity; whether or not it actually was retconned can be easily said for either argument because PJ has nothing important to claim to fame about, and thus contribute to the M&L continuity
Paper Jam was just “another day in the Mushroom Kingdom of Peach getting captured by Bowser go save her (oh but this time half of everything is Paper)” compared to the themes and plots of Dream Team, Bowser’s Inside Story, Partners in Time, or Super Star Saga
Brothership is really good.
Still feel like Dream Team is getting some undeserved hate though...
Dream Team isn't bad. But it ain't good either.
@@jaretco6423they music is good and 3d grx otherwise its just endless padding
1:08 Sorry Ant, but Kingdom Battle came out on august 29th 2017
Oops
I still can't believe that, in the span of a year, Nintendo put out 2 different classic/beloved Mario RPG Remakes and the revival of a third.
And to think only a few years earlier we thought Mario RPG was forgotten, Paper Mario was ruined, and M&L was dead.
Your computer background genuinely made me laugh for like a solid 30-45 seconds.
Makes sense, I’ve played a lot of the Xenoblade games, especially 2
@doubleasworkshop1692 There's a difference gameplay style between Xenoblade & Mario & Luigi and while Xenoblade can be a excuse as to why they pacing is there; for better or for worst, Mario & Luigi has no business having a pacing being a slog.
Weird
I think Brothership is by far the funniest Mario and Luigi game
Can you give examples?
Huh??
@@BlueDragoon97 Luigi of course, hee hee
@@mariajimenafigueroa233But remember when they put Luigi in a dress in Superstar Saga? That was WAY funnier than anything I’ve seen in this game.
@BlueDragoon97 Anything Luigi does is funny
I really could not get the same excitement out of the story as you did, i was so fed up with it that by the time it started to get good i became hyper critical about it
Would be cool if they did a remake of Partners in Time next, with the same 3D artstyle as Brothership. I want me some HD Shroobs
The very first thing I always remember when PiT is brought up:
"BABIES!"
For example, the bros. Attacks made by Technikki… how would she know how to build an attack that was found inside Bowser’s guts?
as an RPG stan who loved the Mario RPG series, it really has felt like a dream... like an ALPHADREAM that this series has been resurrected from the grave outta nowhere. we fans have talked our collective heads off, wanting to see these games Remastered as well as to give us new Mario RPGs and suddenly it has happened.
Antdude not getting to the story until 40 mins into an hour-long video is a pretty good analogy for the game's pacing.
19:52 HOLY SHIT how to get me instantly interested in an OST. Dialga's Fight to the Finish is, in my opinion, Pokemon's equivalent of "in the final." Just so damn dramatic and climactic in a game where you really dont expect it.
