I just hope Nintendo gives this team more chances to improve with making Mario and Luigi games. It’s hard to live up to AlphaDream. The game isn’t selling incredibly well right now, so let’s just hope Nintendo keeps the series alive afterwards. At least it’s a better long awaited return than Strikers Battle League was.
Probably because Nintendo rushed the game, they gave the same development time for M&L as the 3DS games, the switch is a massive leap in development time and power from 3DS.
I'll have to check out how people really feel about this game in a couple weeks when the honeymoon phase is over, there are wayyy to many polarising views about this game going around right now
finally a review from someone who - has played the game for over 2 hours - didnt just make a video to dunk on IGN - seems to actually know what theyre talking about
I honestly think that this game, even with his fair share of problems, is a very good game and exactly what we needed: what i mean by this is that for a revival of the Mario and Luigi series we didn't need the best game, but a solid game that can prove that this series has the potential to continue and expand. A lot of the mechanics introduced in this game can become the best the franchise has ever saw if they were tweaked: -the combat of itself is very satisfying and good, with every main attack and enemy attack being the most varied the series has, so fixing the loading times and unlocking more options sooner is probably the only solution i can think of; -the interactability of the objects in the overworld is also a solid plus for me, being able to manipulate the environment ouside of the simple use of bros moves is, in my opinion, one of the best decisions that the team could do, from the spin-jumping flowers of Florall Island to the ability to pick up objects and toss them between the bros, the fact that the single press of the A botton can do much more than jump, hammer and talk is a breath of fresh hair. The only solution i can think of is having more interactible objects outside of Bros Moves; -can i also mention that i also really like Luigi Logic as a whole? Outside of his very whacky ideas and the fact that it shows just how much the Green Stache has grown, the ability to automatically send Luigi to do certain tasks that he does by himself has been proven quite useful in my journey. This thing alone makes me think that AI Luigi isn't worst than the classic controlled Luigi (i honestly think that they are equal). If we really wanted to improve this it should definetly be a best of both worlds, were you have full Luigi control while still being able to separate him with Luigi Logic to do other stuff. (also don't tell me that one of the problems is platforming because outside of Florall Island's bouncy flowers you can just move and jump with both bros at the same time with any Bros Move) -the tutorials... oh man the tutorials of this game are almost perfect!! Even of the tutorial boxes are pretty common and you can't refuse them, i really appreciate that they are just some small lines with a short video and being able easly skip them by some A mashing. Less cutscenes is the only solution i can imagine
Im genuinely confused about the load time compaints. I have a OLED Switch and I downloaded the game from the E-Shop. The load into a fight and out of a fight takes an average of 3 seconds. I am also not experiencing any stutter that reviewers keep mentioning. Switch Stop, did you play the phyisical version or was your downloaded?
I have my own issues with that review outside of the pacing and performance issues but most of the other complaints i saw with that review boiled down to it being nitpicky at best.
@@e1iteyoshi998 The worst part is, many issues weren't even nitpicking, they were just outright lies from someone who clearly didn't even play the game! Like, how the heck can you say a game with an entire island that's a city, or an island with a jellyfish nightclub is GENERIC?! And how can you say the story is lame? Like, did they play the first 2 hours and then write their review? There's no way they made it to the final boss!
Counterarguments: Tutorials: They're very brief. It's 4 quick A presses without even having to read it. It's not NEARLY as bad as BiS or Dream Team, where it's an unskippable cutscene. Slow start: I agree, I was going "where the heck are the bros attacks?" Luigi AI: Luigi literally never did anything stupid on my playthrough and I'm 20 hours in. Performance: I legit had no lag spikes. Like, at all. And my switch is very old. The loading screens are frequent, but aren't too long and never stuttered, which is something noteworthy. Luigi's button being reversed: Yeah, that's probably my biggest issue in this game. Item usage: This has been a thing in every game. I've healed the wrong bro in every game. Sail toggle: It's not when you leave an island. It's when you encounter a new island, which can be annoying.
I agree with pretty much everything said here besides the tutorials. Those weren’t really a problem, a good 60%-70% of the game just had Flashing Text boxes on screen which you can skip through in less then a second or 2 and don’t force you into doing it. For example the in battle Hammer Tutorial and the Bros Attack Tutorial, You can choose to ignore those and do your own thing or figure it out for yourself. There only 4-5 instances in the beginning of the game where the game forces you to do things for a Tutorial, First time opening the menu, The first Luigi logic, The Toads in Rayn Forest, The passing tutorial in Rayn Forest can be skipped if you do Twisty first (it’s just Text Boxes again), Learning the Bros Moves if you want to count that, And the battle plug tutorial. The rest is left up to you to figure out. I Think it’s not the Tutorials that slow the start of the game down it’s the Dialog or the Luigi Logic Cutscenes that are causing the problem, at least form what you were saying. Also the example you used with the Key I get the first half panning to the key and the keyhole but the cutscene happening right after you get the key is more convenient to me personally, saves time from having you walk back put the key in and load the cutscene, that’s more of a nitpick then anything. I would take these kinds of tutorials than the ones in Paper Jam or Dream Team any day.
I beat the game took me 55 hrs biggest complaints were it dragged on a bit long towards the end. I played in handheld and never really had a problem with performance. Enjoyed some of the more challenging side quests towards the end.
I'm a bit surprised because I don't have any issue with the load times. Even tho I have a normal switch. I think Nintendo needs to do a new console because of the 30 fps tho Yeah I agree with the select attack with Luigi... In the first battles.. I instinctively pressed b... And it did nothing... Now I have to press a to select with Luigi yay... At least I get used to it. For the Ai Luigi... I don't mind the idea i think it's handy for luigi to help Mario doing things like smashing created. but i would loved to control mario and luigi for jumping at least... That's how it feels to play a m and l game. To play as mario and luigi The healing thing tho... I personally Never noticed... I think it's more a you problem.
Honestly why IGN gets constantly shat is due to the publications' reputation. So when they do have a competent reviewer for a game it's hard to take cause again... it's IGN.
The game is great, as a fan of the series there can be some nitpicks but I am 20 hours in and it's fantastic. As an entry to the series it will be fun no worries
1:24 I know you want to keep things spoiler free but I will say the game’s surprising twist and final battle might be a little scary to some fans, including some younger ones. So to those fans that are nearing the final act, do prepare for a psychological horror ride.
The GREAT news is: the first 8 hours are probably the slowest part of the game, and the pacing is basically perfect after that, so if you like it now, you're gonna LOVE it after this!
The insanely high loading times seems to be a poor decision in the part of programming. I am no game designer, but what seems to be happening is that the battle "map" is completely separate from the main map you are walking around. What they could do instead was to make the battle area be on the same place as the map you are in, just "out of bounds". Once you get into a battle, all the game had to do was teleport both Mario and Luigi's models there, move the camera to focus the battle system and load the enemy properties / stats. All the enemies could be already pre-loaded once you get into a map, since it seems enemy variety is a little scarce in this game. By doing these changes, the loading times could have been severely reduced, I believe.
Sometimes I feel that we are more worried about the reviews, scores and what other people think about a game than actually playing the game by ourselves and making our own opinion. How many games havent we tried because of a bad review/comment? I undestand though, the game market/catalog is huge and exhausting, theres no enough time to play every game, and everyone of us wants to make the best decision when buying a game. Thats the big win and loss of having the internet as a metric scale for "worhtyness" when considering trying out a game... Sometimes too much info is paralyzing
Hot take: after finishing the game, I can confidently say that Brothership has the absolute BEST story out of ANY Mario RPG! I was struck in the feels several times and the ending actually made me tear up a little. That has never happened to me in a Mario game before! I have little complaints regarding the slow pacing in the beginning hours, and a couple odd control changes, but if those complaints were addressed, this game might even surpass BIS as my favorite game in the series! This game was an absolute BLAST!
People focusing on Luigi’s b button as the worst thing amuses me while there is: 1. almost no enemy variety 2. lackluster music (especially later bosses) 3. no story for the first 15 hours or something 4. no attack variety until after the 2nd lighthouse 5. a pacing so bad I sometimes fall asleep in 10 min dialogue scenes about „you are connecting islands ? That’s crazy, I guess it’s super difficult connecting islands, have fun connecting islands…. I mean are people ignoring all that ?
3, 4 and 5 is the same problem pacing and the boss battle theme was not the best but the music of the islands and different moments that the music comes out is one of the best
This is definitely better than Dream Team and Partners in Time but not as good as Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story, although this game doesn't have that good first week sales, Christmas is next month so it will probably sell at least 2 million copies. if they fix the performance and the tutorials and improve the ideas of this game in the next game then we have something special. Side note: the performance will probably be fixed in the next game thanks to the Switch 2 so that's a good thing for the future
@crowmaster9652 Dragon Quest is super popular, don't get me wrong but it is Mario we are talking about, and most people who buy games during Christmas are parents who buy games for their children and the best franchise that you know is child friendly is Mario
@@joopvanhedel1372 I mean 60k sales on its first week is a tenth of the expected initial sales if dragon quest sells more than 200k sales on its first week it means rpg enthusiasts will be three times more enticed to pick up dragon quest unless by some chance that the game receives backlash due to some random insertion of something brothership would stand a chance
The performance maybe, but can't you mash through basically all the tutorials in this game since they're given almost exclusively via text prompts? it's not like BIS, PIT, or DT where you have to actually play a mini section ON top of text coming from an npc that completely kills any and all momentum the game might have had especially on replays. But I suppose stuff like the key just contributes to worse pacing so I suppose I can understand that(although can't you speed up/skip cutscenes in this game?).
Technically this isn't the first Mario & Luigi game you can play on your TV, the first game became available to play on Switch when GBA games were added to NSO
I’m pretty sure you could play superstar saga on the TV as well all the way back in the 2000s with the little game boy thing you could stick on the bottom of your GameCube
I don’t consider the key sequence handholding or a tutorial. Just a cool scenimatic sequence. The pacing wasn’t a problem to me bc you usually always had something to do. The loading times are literally my only complaint about this game. Every other issue, is either simply a nitpick, or I got used to it. 9/10 easily for me. It helps that it has points in its favor that the other games in the series were lacking.
I mean you compared a turn based rpg to an action adventure rpg (wind waker). And lemme tell yaaa. I LOVE wind waker lol. But is it fair to compare those two? I also think some things we could’ve gone without- like showing the keyhole. And then that’s it. You go find the key yourself you know? I enjoy the sea map. I think they did it this way because it would be really boring waiting to get to the next island in a non adventure game. While your ship makes its way to the next current I think the intention is for you to go do side quests and or find some more sprite bulbs so you can create more plugs. You have complete control of what to do while you wait for the ship to reach its destination.
I have also played every game since i was a child however i believe Luigi's menu was not that bad i adapted to it almost immediately would i prefer b for the menus? Absolutely in a heart beat but it honestly isn't that bad
Having finished the game only have a few complaints. (Spoilers ahead) I feel the final big bad arc part should have been dragged a little longer or they should have showed up sooner. It feels like you got flicked with a rubber band and sped through to the ending. Which is a shame, Reclusa seemed like a fun antagonist and stuff could have been made interestic with the virtual reality thematic it seemed to have. Second, I feel the final boss fight was a little too easy and dare I say lacking. The dodge patterns were a lot easier to dodge than even enemies mid way through the game and even previous bosses. Heck I had more of a problem witn Pipegunk and Glohm Bowser.
I have not played the game at all but that key example of bad tutorial just doesn't even seem like a tutorial. it is just them picking up the key and the game having cutscenes, at least the way you edited them here. Was the game actually teaching you to pick up objects there? Were there text boxes stopping you at every point of that one section telling you that you can pick up the item?
In some instances there are text boxes but your point is correct, it's mostly cutscenes at the start. The issue is that the cutscenes are in most cases not very interesting and kinda cheaply made. Usually I don't mind cutscenes but the ones at the start of the game definitely feel like they're just wasting your time which is what I got really annoyed with
Of course I feel sorry for the developers if a game gets a 5. Especially if its a returning series that I want to see in the future improve. But if the game is worth a 5, people should stop complaining and accept it. Nintendo should take the L and work hard to improve. You cant constantly accept everything they do because critics are exactly what pushes brands to improve themselves.
Its not worth a 5 lmao, a 5 out of 10 should be for games with good ideas here and there dragged down by something so much that it ends up being mediocre at best, this game is FAR from mediocre. The gameplay is the best the series ever had, the antagonist and story beats towards the end are incredible and the game is beautiful, most of the issues are mostly from the beginning of the game wich is slow, but if we were to give a 5 out of 10 to every games with a slow beginning then some of the most beloved games out there are just mid then ( the xenoblade trilogy for example ). The game is not perfect, far from it but its not a 5, its a 7.5 or 8/10, really good ideas and solid gameplay coupled with some rough edges here and there.
You're speaking as if nintendo has any obligation to improve. If they make a game worth an 8, but people only want to give it a 5, and that leads to it not selling well, they're just gonna stop fucking making those games. The whole point of criticism is to be fair and point out what does and doesn't work. A review doing nothing but whining about nitpicks pretending theyre all prominent game ruining systems will not send the right message and leave nintendo completely unsure whats even actually wrong.
I agree with everything here. I got the game today, and i have these same issues!! I dont like that you don't have full control over Luigi anymore, but having him act on his own is kinda cute if it's not screwing up your parkour (he messes up and mario is dragged back to join him), and I also made the same mistakes with using A for Luigi and accidentally attacking as a result with A Also please, I HATE the soundtrack. It lacks complete originality/uniqueness compared to the masterpieces that were the original. Every soundtrack sounds the same cause the composer spams those trumpets every single song, it loses originality fast and gets annoying as hell. I had to turn off the music just to tolerate playing this game. I'm so disappointed, the soundtrack was a huge part of these games and this one sucks that it only angers me.
I gotta be honest... I feel a little conflicted when it comes to M&L Brothership. All the mixed reviews i've seen is kinda making it hard weather I wanna play the game or not.
Play it. The game is genuinely really good. Most of the issues are just nitpicks or slight annoyances. I know it's scary, but the negativity is causing people to actively look for issues they would have otherwise overlooked
@Nando75549 not sure that will happen for a while, but if you're looking for cheap, might be worth checking for second hand cartridges. The mixed reception might even make it cheaper for you ;)
EVERYBODY BIG NEWS… Supposedly the n64 is coming back in 2025 with 4k graphics and it was supposed to come out this year…. Switch stop, if you see this and you guys make a vid about it then can you please give me a shoutout?
I went into this game expecting it be be a kids game (as a fan who previously grew up with the series) and as somebody whose ~4 hours in, I’m very let down by the writing. It’s not cheesy or bland, just… too convenient?? Immediately you are thrown into this world that has been divided for how many ever years, you immediately meet a mother who hasn’t seen either of her children in what seems like an INCREDIBLY long time, and then right away once you visit Twistee / Raynforst you IMMEDIATELY meet her children and instead of any background development they tell you they will help you if you connect the island… something that’s NEVER been done until now?? BORING!!! I could go even deeper with my nitpicking but this is what the dialogue has been like the entire time. I’m really hoping it’s just the tutorial stage of the game that eases the player in but it’s been like this the entire time and it feels like the “story” is just delivering objective after objective without incorporating any real narrative. A huge let down compared to titles like Bowsers Inside Story and Dream Team.
Its fun but enemies having too many turns, the "hints" about dodging or counterattacking from the enemies is unfair and ridiculous, there should have been a boss at almost every island, etc etc.
Hmmm idr fast sailing turning off going in and out of islands it only turns off when you discovered new islands i always left it on and go do a side quest and I was on a small current keept getting your apporching so and so island alot cuz fast was on lol either way good break down mostly agree with you B always should been Luigi confrimed i highly enjoyed the game i give it at least a 9 the charm the battles great boss amazing hopefully we get a new one where they can keep on improoveing not a bad first try it was an enjoyable ride but yeah loading did suck but when your in tune kinda of gels could be worse sonic 06 loads yikes and idr to much frame rate drop i notice it like stutter for a split secound going back to game play after cutscene time to time but jumping olatforming was alwats butter smooth except the bomb animation killingnalot on screen lol
15:15 The ONLY possible reason for this is "muh brodaship" which is corny and unnecessary if true Also can't agree with the "slowing down when approaching an island" thing. The islands ZOOM BY with fast travel on.
the biggest gripes are the repetitive cutscene for linking, and the tree cutscene, if you aren't doing anything different, don't repeat it. Luigi requiring A to confirm. And it feels like the game is super frugal about bros attacks. I have heard there are 10 in the game, and am currently at a point after the 3rd great lighthouse and still only have 6, which has me scratching my head why the game is so against giving you fun bros attacks. As while the plug mechanic is fun, it seems that it interferes with the bros attacks in some areas. and more bosses please. It really takes the piss when you go through an island to have nothing at the end...
This game doesn’t feel real. I definitely have problems with it. Enemy turns can go on for way too long, I hated the final area before the final boss, you don’t have invincibility frames when you leave a battle so you can go right back into another one and it’s pretty annoying, the first few hours are way too slow, Luigi‘s battle menu being controlled with A instead of B sucks ass, there is some annoying padding in the game and Most importantly the game probably has the weakest final boss theme in the entire series😭. All of that aside there is still plenty to enjoy. The battle system is good as always, there are plenty of interesting locations to explore, I actually really enjoyed the sailing and sea theme despite the fact that I hate boats and the ocean and the story is actually interesting. This is the best Mario story we’ve gotten in a long time (since Bowser jrs journey but no one played that so for most people it’s longer). I was actually invested The last few hours especially are insane. there are some fucked up stuff in the game too that I was not expecting. The villain of brothership might be my favorite Mario villain. He might overthrow the shroobs, i’m not entirely sure since recency bias is a thing so I’ll have to think more on it, but he was really good. The story ain’t perfect. They’re definitely could be some tweaks but overall, it was very good. The games whole life lesson was also really cute. Tutorials were also pretty good. Nothing on dream teams level. Sometimes the characters can chat for a bit too long, but it’s not usually too bad. I am so grateful that they didn’t retcon the entire series for no reason. I love all the nods to previous games and even like how they directly acknowledge previous games sometimes. They directly mention the events of Bowser Junior’s journey of all things which is insane. That is the last thing I thought would ever reference Something that I do find weird is that all of the traditional Mario stuff in the game is a very generic. You are not getting any elite trio type characters in this game. No unique toad characters either. No Toadsworth or Toadbert. Not even the Captains from Bowser minions make an appearance, and they’re literally just generic enemies with flags. Was the reason this game was able to have unique characters in different locations because it takes place in a different dimension? I guess that’s the skeptic in me. Also the extension corpse are literally just worse versions of the BFFs from Bowser Junior’s journey. I know I’ve mentioned Bowser Junior‘s journey way more in this “review” no one’s gonna read then any sane person should but I’m one of the 10 people that actually play that and there is clearly inspiration from that mode with stuff implemented into brothership. Anyway Altogether I’d say it’s a good game with some annoying problems, but it has some absolutely stand out moments that are worth seeing. I’m very glad I wasn’t spoiled
Honestly the Elite Trio not being in the game shocked me but that might be because of mandates. If you notice any new games the Mario species can’t look too different from normal nowadays and it sucks…
@ I’m also a pokemon fan but I feel like 15-20 hours is perfect for a Mario and Luigi game. Bowser’s Inside Story is around 16 hours long and I find that to be the perfect length
@@JGr2000As someone who plays alot I dont care how long a video game is. The longer the better for me. Can spend more time exploring and upgrading my shit.
The problem isn't being long, but taking long to get good, the first like, 10 hours are suuuuch a drag, it's criminal you take so long to get hammers and bros moves, very annoying
ive been playing brothership off and on since it leaked last month and my biggest issue with it is that outside legend of the seven stars and bowsers inside story its just another boring generic mario rpg if anything this has been a bad year for nintendo exclusives showtime was bad echoes was trash and brothership is just bland and boring
I’m so done with every critic on the internet when it comes to this game. I have no issues with this game. The tutorials are not bad or annoying. I only noticed the frame rate drop because I was looking for it. I have played every game in the series and I will boldly say that this is the best one.
I don’t like the fact that Action Commands are still present in this game 💀 They’re annoying and ruin the combat system for me. They really need to be retired. They’ve been overused at this point, and Mario RPGs should start using Pokémon’s combat system
It's great but it's boring as in story and no voice I'm shocked that still do this with no real voice but it's a good game but only thing I can say story goes find a island and go over and over till end I think it's grat looking but why mack them gay look man I'm in my 40s and love mario but UFO all looks gay I see people play with them hand in hand just a kiss away but glad it's on unreal it's good just not for old fans to new kids weard gen z
What i don't like 1. Loading times 💤 2. Random enemy encounters too many useless battles 3. Dialogue should be skippable not fast forward 4. Frame rate this game can't hold 30fps properly 5. Too long unnecessary long 20h would be enough 6. AI Luigi wasn't needed the formula was already great in previous games 7. Handholding this stop & go gameplay is just bad, feels like it made for 6 year olds
There is one thing that I don't agree with, it's that you said that the gameplay is bad, it's totally incorrect, it's more like it's one of the best gameplays in the saga, you probably only say that because of the beginning of the game and the tutorial.
@@carloslabrador1432the gameplay isn't bad. I said the stop and go gameplay is very bad because you are getting stopped every couple of minutes for a dialogue which can be fast forward but not skipped. The actual gameplay is good but you are getting interrupted every time especially in the first 4 hours.
omg what was that ugly section? That was nitpicking at it's worst. 1. Frame drops are not a big deal in this game, most people won't notice them. 2. The load time could be better, but you literally put as an example a load time that took only a little over a second more than in this game. It's not that bad. Could it be better? Of course! Is it a deal breaker? Nah 3. The B button is definitly annoying. But come on man, it's not an ''ugly'' thing. 4. Come one man. That's a you problem dude. I haven't had a problem with the item stuff. I didn't even know it was a thing. It's a you problem. Pure nitpicking man. I would put the first 5 hours slow start as an ugly thing and not these
I actually agree with Switch Stop. These problems did not exist in previous entries. And long loading times between battles make the whole thing more tedious.
a switch game switch wii level assets (in terms of the low poly count) struggling to hit 30 fps is embarrassing. it’s not excusable for a $60 release. that’s the problem. the loading screens are also unbearable. unlike older M&L games, battles take upwards of 5-10 seconds to load, then after the battles takes another 10 seconds of a black loading screen to take you back to the overworks. in an rpg with essentially random encounters, it drags the entire game down.
This dude is massively exaggerating the load times, I'm halfway through the game (on a gen 1 switch mind you) and the enemies take about 5 seconds to load in and out. the longest loading screen I've sat through was about 15 seconds for a new area.
@@carloslabrador1432a better final boss doesn't make a better game. I made another comment on this video explaining why it's my least favorite m&l game.

I honestly think that this game, even with his fair share of problems, is a very good game and exactly what we needed: what i mean by this is that for a revival of the Mario and Luigi series we didn't need the best game, but a solid game that can prove that this series has the potential to continue and expand.
A lot of the mechanics introduced in this game can become the best the franchise has ever saw if they were tweaked:
-the combat of itself is very satisfying and good, with every main attack and enemy attack being the most varied the series has, so fixing the loading times and unlocking more options sooner is probably the only solution i can think of;
-the interactability of the objects in the overworld is also a solid plus for me, being able to manipulate the environment ouside of the simple use of bros moves is, in my opinion, one of the best decisions that the team could do, from the spin-jumping flowers of Florall Island to the ability to pick up objects and toss them between the bros, the fact that the single press of the A botton can do much more than jump, hammer and talk is a breath of fresh hair. The only solution i can think of is having more interactible objects outside of Bros Moves;
-can i also mention that i also really like Luigi Logic as a whole? Outside of his very whacky ideas and the fact that it shows just how much the Green Stache has grown, the ability to automatically send Luigi to do certain tasks that he does by himself has been proven quite useful in my journey. This thing alone makes me think that AI Luigi isn't worst than the classic controlled Luigi (i honestly think that they are equal). If we really wanted to improve this it should definetly be a best of both worlds, were you have full Luigi control while still being able to separate him with Luigi Logic to do other stuff.
(also don't tell me that one of the problems is platforming because outside of Florall Island's bouncy flowers you can just move and jump with both bros at the same time with any Bros Move)
-the tutorials... oh man the tutorials of this game are almost perfect!!
IGN was wrong because this game did NOT have a "slow generic story" it had one of the best stories in the game once you complete it
I have my own issues with that review outside of the pacing and performance issues but most of the other complaints i saw with that review boiled down to it being nitpicky at best.
@@e1iteyoshi998 I think nitpicking is fine as these issue can add up. I just don't see how any issue was big enough to sink the game completely.
@@e1iteyoshi998
The worst part is, many issues weren't even nitpicking, they were just outright lies from someone who clearly didn't even play the game! Like, how the heck can you say a game with an entire island that's a city, or an island with a jellyfish nightclub is GENERIC?! And how can you say the story is lame? Like, did they play the first 2 hours and then write their review? There's no way they made it to the final boss!
That's completely subjective though.
Counterarguments:
Tutorials: They're very brief. It's 4 quick A presses without even having to read it. It's not NEARLY as bad as BiS or Dream Team, where it's an unskippable cutscene.
Slow start: I agree, I was going "where the heck are the bros attacks?"
Luigi AI: Luigi literally never did anything stupid on my playthrough and I'm 20 hours in.
Exactly. Seems kinda hypocritical at the least to say they're worse than in Dream Team and Paper Jam.
Something that could and would make the game so much better is being able to freely switch between who is in the front/ the computer
The times i fumbled luigis attacks by pressing a because I had to choose a to attack
I beat the game took me 55 hrs biggest complaints were it dragged on a bit long towards the end. I played in handheld and never really had a problem with performance. Enjoyed some of the more challenging side quests towards the end.
I think the main issue i have with the game is the hand holding within the first 4 hours of the game, other than that it’s solid
am I weird for getting the digital version💀
5:15 “Because you can have 2 at once”
Hmm wonder when he recorded this
lol
I'm a bit surprised because I don't have any issue with the load times. Even tho I have a normal switch. I think Nintendo needs to do a new console because of the 30 fps tho
Yeah I agree with the select attack with Luigi...
To play as mario and luigi
The healing thing tho... I personally Never noticed... I think it's more a you problem.
Honestly why IGN gets constantly shat is due to the publications' reputation. So when they do have a competent reviewer for a game it's hard to take cause again... it's IGN.
i'm not sure how i will feel about it, it is my first Mario & Luigi game, i asked for it for christmas, but im still excited for it.
I am 8 hours in brothership, and so far I'm loving the game
People focusing on Luigi’s b button as the worst thing amuses me while there is:
1. almost no enemy variety
2. lackluster music (especially later bosses)
3. no story for the first 15 hours or something
4. no attack variety until after the 2nd lighthouse
5. a pacing so bad I sometimes fall asleep in 10 min dialogue scenes about „you are connecting islands ?
Side note: the performance will probably be fixed in the next game thanks to the Switch 2 so that's a good thing for the future
enter dragon quest remake to challenge this rpg straightforward
@crowmaster9652 Dragon Quest is super popular, don't get me wrong but it is Mario we are talking about, and most people who buy games during Christmas are parents who buy games for their children and the best franchise that you know is child friendly is Mario
@@joopvanhedel1372 I mean 60k sales on its first week is a tenth of the expected initial sales
if dragon quest sells more than 200k sales on its first week it means rpg enthusiasts will be three times more enticed to pick up dragon quest
unless by some chance that the game receives backlash due to some random insertion of something
brothership would stand a chance
The performance maybe, but can't you mash through basically all the tutorials in this game since they're given almost exclusively via text prompts? it's not like BIS, PIT, or DT where you have to actually play a mini section ON top of text coming from an npc that completely kills any and all momentum the game might have had especially on replays. But I suppose stuff like the key just contributes to worse pacing so I suppose I can understand that(although can't you speed up/skip cutscenes in this game?).
I just beat the game and my complaints are performance, the pacing in the beginning, and luigis button mapping and ai
@@shades4313 yes, you can. I've had the GBA-GC attachment for more than a decade. Also, you could purchase it on the Wii U
@@shades4313yep, the game boy player?
I don’t consider the key sequence handholding or a tutorial. Just a cool scenimatic sequence. The pacing wasn’t a problem to me bc you usually always had something to do. The loading times are literally my only complaint about this game. Every other issue, is either simply a nitpick, or I got used to it. 9/10 easily for me. It helps that it has points in its favor that the other games in the series were lacking.
switch hardware is so dated, we needed a refresh years ago.
Okay you had some actual valid criticisms I agree I'm hoping they do listen to fans criticisms to make the next game even better.
Frame rate barely hitting 30fps in 2024 is pretty pathetic. it studders SO MUCH
Facts
Maybe it just me, but I didn't really had this issue personnally
I have also played every game since i was a child however i believe Luigi's menu was not that bad i adapted to it almost immediately would i prefer b for the menus? Absolutely in a heart beat but it honestly isn't that bad
I still didn't get the chance to play it yet 😔
Having finished the game only have a few complaints.
(Spoilers ahead)
I feel the final big bad arc part should have been dragged a little longer or they should have showed up sooner.
This game has its problems but I think a lot of the problems are similar to Dream Team. However, I think Dream Team is a fantastic game
11:52 that's seaside
I have not played the game at all but that key example of bad tutorial just doesn't even seem like a tutorial. it is just them picking up the key and the game having cutscenes, at least the way you edited them here. Was the game actually teaching you to pick up objects there? Were there text boxes stopping you at every point of that one section telling you that you can pick up the item?
In some instances there are text boxes but your point is correct, it's mostly cutscenes at the start. The issue is that the cutscenes are in most cases not very interesting and kinda cheaply made. Usually I don't mind cutscenes but the ones at the start of the game definitely feel like they're just wasting your time which is what I got really annoyed with
D-1 crashout, the game isnt even bad its fun asf, switch stop buggin
I dont like that you don't have full control over Luigi anymore, but having him act on his own is kinda cute if it's not screwing up your parkour (he messes up and mario is dragged back to join him), and I also made the same mistakes with using A for Luigi and accidentally attacking as a result with A
Also please, I HATE the soundtrack.
Many of the issues mentioned are a hard no for me, thank you for saving me $60+
Just let the fans mod it be like the originals. They will fix it.

EVERYBODY BIG NEWS…
Supposedly the n64 is coming back in 2025 with 4k graphics and it was supposed to come out this year….
I think this game is goty worthy.
15:15 The ONLY possible reason for this is "muh brodaship" which is corny and unnecessary if true
Also can't agree with the "slowing down when approaching an island" thing. The islands ZOOM BY with fast travel on.
I've never actually noticed frame drops. I've also played most the series, but Dream team is the only one I managed to finish and not fall off.
the biggest gripes are the repetitive cutscene for linking, and the tree cutscene, if you aren't doing anything different, don't repeat it.
That you can skip
I was actually invested
The last few hours especially are insane. there are some fucked up stuff in the game too that I was not expecting. That is the last thing I thought would ever reference
Something that I do find weird is that all of the traditional Mario stuff in the game is a very generic.
Does anyone else feel like this game is too long?
As a fan of RPGs like persona and pokemon
I don't mind it honestly
@ I’m also a pokemon fan but I feel like 15-20 hours is perfect for a Mario and Luigi game. Bowser’s Inside Story is around 16 hours long and I find that to be the perfect length
I love Dream Team so I don’t think it’s too long. Granted I’m definitely not finished with the game.
IGN IS BAD
METACRITTIC IS GOOD
I don’t like the fact that Action Commands are still present in this game 💀 They’re annoying and ruin the combat system for me. They really need to be retired. They’ve been overused at this point, and Mario RPGs should start using Pokémon’s combat system
They are the whole point of the combat in Mario RPGs. Removing them is like removing the jump from the main series games

John cena: Are you sure about that?
I completely lost you at the tutorial part-
I’ll wait to play this on switch2 for better frame rates 🤗
Just saying. I would’ve preferred a partners in time remake over brothership 😭
We have already had 2 remakes and 9 years without new games
What i don't like
1. Loading times 💤
2. Random enemy encounters too many useless battles
3. Dialogue should be skippable not fast forward
4. Frame rate this game can't hold 30fps properly
5. Too long unnecessary long 20h would be enough
6. AI Luigi wasn't needed the formula was already great in previous games
Nah
Yeah it's definitely nitpicking imo cause not everyone is experiencing the same issue.
The loading time is an absolute deal breaker for me
It is honestly not that bad. It’s got some moments where it takes a while to load but it really shouldn’t be a deal breaker
This dude is massively exaggerating the load times, I'm halfway through the game (on a gen 1 switch mind you) and the enemies take about 5 seconds to load in and out. the longest loading screen I've sat through was about 15 seconds for a new area.
Sonic is doing better
