When we gutted our GMC in order to have a clean slate to work with, we chased out a mother rat and two babies from inside the vehicle. The vehicle is now a mobile science lab that has a roll off back section in order to expose a telescope which is installed inside the vehicle. The vehicle is used to bring STEM education to schools up and down the front range of Colorado. Happy to send you photos of the completed vehicle is you wish. Good luck on your GMC RV.

Not Sure it is too late or not but it would be best if you take a cardboard template of some of the cabinet sides so you you will have the radius. That way you dont have to guess and it will go back up against the wall and fit great without any gaps. Then you can throw all the old wood away so it can be be built to your liking and have the radius.

Similarly, I hope they saved all of the flooring pieces to use as templates for the new carpeting.

My late wife and I had an old '78 Allegro motor home with that 454 engine. VERY strong engine that pulled a tow dolly with my late wife's car on it. Since you have kids, one word of warning, NO CARPET! Put down a vinyl or faux wood floor as you are going to be getting a ton of sand and dirt being brought in. Just a natural fact if you have kids.

Taking out the grungy carpet was the most joyful thing to see. I could almost smell that gross mold and rat dirt in it, ugh. Great job removing all that gunk from engine too. I learned a lot watching you. Cleaning an engine should be done, but what to cover up? This was helpful.
Disassembly is so easy on these rigs. In today's Class C crappy builds, wood framing is stapled onto other parts. Taking anything out destroys it. This was beautiful to watch. This is how assembly should be done. What was super useful to see also was what was behind all the cabinets, the type of spray foam insulation, the substrate on floors, how they were assembled.
INGENUITIVE - a new word you created which is a combination of INGENIOUS and INVENTIVE. I like it.
Great video, so informative and I love your positive energy. Thank you for a very educational and enjoyable video. The music was nice, but prefer no music for these longer videos as they hurt the ears after a while. Too much sound.
fyi - Don't work without a dust mask and gloves and even an apron. Your child should not be in there without PPE gear. There is mold, dust mites, rat poop diseases, bacteria, fungus floating around - a hotbed of disease and parasites. Please don't let children into a construction zone without full lung protection. That stuff could be deadly for their sensitive lungs. She has no goggles, no mask, no gloves, and a bare dress. Full clothing, mask up, goggles, shoes not sandals, hard hat for little kids please. My stupid brother took his toddlers to a construction zone on his house remodel and they were inhaling that dust and rolling in it much to my horror. Next thing I hear is that both of them have lead poisoning. Good luck getting that out of their bodies. Doomed for life by an irresponsible father. Take this very seriously. There are so many chemicals hurting us all the time, that we don't need to actively put any more inside us.
    1. How is hantavirus spread?
Hantavirus is spread from wild rodents, particularly mice and rats, to people. The virus, which is found in rodent urine, saliva, and feces (poop), can be easily released in the air in confined spaces when disturbed by rodents or human activities, such as sweeping or vacuuming.
    2. What are the symptoms of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome?
Symptoms begin one to eight weeks after inhaling the virus and typically start with 3-5 days of illness including fever, sore muscles, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. As the disease gets worse, it causes shortness of breath due to fluid filled lungs.
    3. How harmful is rat feces?
Contamination of stored foods with rodent feces and urine may transmit disease to both humans and pets. These contaminated foods may carry diseases such as cryptosporidiosis, toxoplasmosis, leptospirosis, salmonellosis, and listeriosis.

Brilliant. I’m loving the build. I watched a YT video on the design and engineering that went into these campers and it’s truly amazing the ideas they came up with. Things like the front wheel drive and the odd rear suspension were all done to save space.
There’s nothing wrong with a modern fit out, a lot of homes get that and even old cars dropped onto modern frames and mechanicals is common. There’s plenty of restored GMC’s getting around so personally I wouldn’t worry much about keeping the interior original.
You’ve already come up with some very good ideas so keep up the great work and watch out for random turds😂. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺

Some friends own a 76 GMC motorhome and they decided to ditch the on board rear pneumatic system and is was slow to adjust, Firestone had discontinued the bags, and so they added a after market pumping systems, added turn valves when the rv was parked, and used stepped air bleed pneumatic dump valves, adjust the speed of air bleed/fill etc.

Voice of Experience calls- you have kids and wife you MUST have storage! Idea; I have seen new RVs that use EV batterys to run the RV 'things'. Two, these same campers have soft, formed fabrick 'cabinets' in place of hard built ones. They are cheaper, weight less, and if you bang your head on it, you will not be impaled on a sharp corner. See the videos on the Tesla Takeover event, the EV trailers were there, one brand is the "Lightning", I think. In all your going to be OUT a bucket of cash just to fix this, never mind running it. AAHH! Memory clicks on; these same EV trailers have a collapsible shower/toilet- the top half drops down into a hip high cabinet. Good Video and project

I restored my abandonded 75 eleganza.i left as much 1975 in it as I could. It outperformed my friends sprinter based airstream on every count other than gas mileage. Make sure you check the oil pan for timing chain tooth nylon and crusty oil remnants. They will clog the oil pick up and scatter the motor. Best to pull the motor and go through it while the interior is out. I know from experience.

There is one of these not far from me that has been sitting for at least 20 years at a RV campground up against a fence. Has a broken window and grafitti on it. But I'd still like to tow it back to my shop and do what I am seeing on this channel. I'd like a comfortable 'travel car' where we have a fridge, bathroom, lots of comfy seating, and a place to lay down. We have a travel trailer, and as others have said, camping with carpet is a challenge to keep clean. You can get sound-deadening material to lay under some synthetic flooring. Save the shag for accent pieces on the wall or ceiling to tie back to when this was new. But things changed for good reason. I'd also reconsider the gas lines. Use it for the water heater and the fridge, and the heater. Hook up to a twin 20 lb tank set up that you can switch. Those are easy and cheap to refill.

No messing about here. That thing is totally torn apart. On the basis it’s only original once I’d think long and hard before taking anything to the tip and would try to reinstate as much of the original cabinetry as possible albeit with updated underpinnings. I’d probably also keep the main bedroom at the back for privacy if I was considering taking long road trips with young kids. Fresh shag pile (preferably orange😂) is a must!

Hi Michael, that brand of Chow Chow was made less than a 1/4 mile from my mom's house out in suburbs of Winston Salem NC. As for a heat pump, I have a Carrier 15k heat pump for my 26 ft Airstream and 30ft Avion trailer. I do not think they are still being made in 2023. Noisy interior fan. Keeping GMC's cool is a problem with all of the windows. The front ac will not cool the rear down at all. But, you stated no lp generator, then you can't run the ac without shore power. such as traveling. Regarding the rear air suspension, I think you are stuck keeping that system and buying reproduction parts. The poo in the loo was something I've never seen in a used unit. Needs a new potty anyway. Greg from NC.

I dig what you're doing with this RV, I think it's going to be a sweet camper when you're done. Maybe Bus Grease Monkey can steer you in the right direction for airbags and solar power, and might I suggest, when you install the fresh shag carpeting, that you spend a little more and have your logo woven in? Just a custom touch, because I know just about the whole family is going to have a hand in this retrofit. 👍

We removed the propane and the generator on our GMC. This allowed us to move the fresh water tank to the driver’s side of the GMC. I rescued the fresh tank that cane with the GMC. If I had to do it again, I would get a a different tank that is shorter allowing for the seating in the back to be lower. This may mean that storage on the drivers’ s side would be limited. With the propane tank on the passenger side gone, we made a box that matched up nicely and we split the storage for 1/2 exterior and 1/2 interior storage below the seat.
We purposely kept the sattee seating in the back specifically so there could be a space for our sons.
You are going good work. Wishing you all the best.

Might look into a pioneer RV under bench heat pump system for your heating and cooling.

I would say... Modernize everything. Heating, Storage, Septic and maybe the wiring?

Love the look of these RVs.... just so different, really want to see what you do with it. I would keep in mind storage, the draws that were in there could of stored a lot of stuff but, I can see the reason why you want to get rid of it. And places to sleep. Over all, looking forward to seeing what you do here...

I don't want to scare you but being that was built in the early 70's there may have been some asbestos under that kitchen linoleum. Love the build.

Coleman Mach makes a heatpump A/C unit for RV's also stay away from shag to hard to keep clean, consider a rubber backed carpet or wood flooring. Thanks for another great video.

Also, there's an Advent Air RV Air Conditioner System available with Heat Strip - 15,000 Btu

@GaryWeeks-ts7tb you can do it that way with the Coleman as well, I like the Coleman Mach because there made here in USA 🇺🇸 Kansas. They seem to be better made than the other ones. I just replaced one of mine it was 25 years old.

L.E.D's would make a good lighting system across the top.
Lincoln MK 7's had airbag suspensions that might work well.

For the floors, having kids, I would go with something else beside carpet. Much cleaner and less dust in case you have asthma. I would go with vinyl flooring( click on wood look type) or the boat deck material that looks like teak. Like I said, much easier to clean and no worries about making a mess.

TH-camrs - buying and fixing up stuff no one else in their right mind would. And for that we thank you, this is a cool rig. Someone gave me a old camper before and i eventually just junked it and made a car trailer out of it due to the amount of work it needed

I'm always amazed at the things people do in flip flops.
Open space inside RV's goes a LONG way to making them feel more spacious than they actually are. Slimmer is better.

I totally had to laugh at this video, I’ve subscribed ever since you brought the Porsche home from the salvage yard, and the reason I laughed was because of dad. Anyone who’s subscribed as long as I have will know how much he hated being on camera back then, so much so you’d hear oops as he backed out of frame, now look at him, he gets on camera and it’s no biggie. Glad to see him coming out of his shell, and his attitude about the dookie in the crapper ( eh shit happens) was hilarious. Can’t wait to see this one completed and yes you can get the rooftop A/C’s with a heat pump, they’re not the greatest the do exist, I’d opt for putting another new style of propane heater in, they can warm that and the water heater up in no time at all.

I am loving this. Definitely agree with you re keeping the 70’s look - shag carpet, woodgrain etc and original seats. Maybe even paint the refrigerator like a 70’s colour so it looks retro but operates as an efficient new appliance.

What a great camper! Hope you can keep the original interior, that cabinet with the drawers is an iconic piece for it.
Gas is great for the fridge, stove and water heater. If you plan any off-grid camping like state parks I would keep it. Solar will not be enough.
We have carpet in our 66 Avion, the kids drag tons of dirt in and it gets hard to clean. Shack would fit great but all the dirt will sit in it.

I would check a habitat resale store and find some laminate hardwood flooring easy to install and easy clean up and check into diesel heaters from what I have read and seen they work great

Gittn' er done! I love it, bringing the Olds back around (I drive a Oldsmobile every day) they are built so well, and have never let me down, not Once!, And I have owned 4 of them in my 52 years, and kicking myself for selling 3 of them. You got a real Gem in the rough, but a true gem no less! Thank you for this guys! ❤
