In the fairground scene, in the original Dark Knight Returns comic, there's a part where, Joker gave cotton candy to those cub scouts who were unaware that it was laced with cyanide (Joker gets a good laugh out of it). When Batman and Robin swoop down to the fairgrounds, Robin was horrified, seeing hundreds of dead kids with bloody foam coming out of their mouths littering the floor. Unfortunately, that scene was removed because it was deemed too "graphic" by the executives.

I will say I fully understand Superman's position. Everyone knows he is the most powerful entity on the planet, everyone fears him because of it (except those who know him). Superman has to be under the law of his home to make his home feel safe, otherwise he get percieved as a danger. Superman's story has always been that of an immigrant's, he has to abide by the laws and culture of his adoptive home or he will be ostracized and (potentially abused), which is the last thing he wants.
Unfortunately, his attempts to avoid that have trapped him in a kind of abuse that he is unable to recognise, one where his power is used by those he wants to protect. One that forces him to turn on his friends to uphold the "laws" of the home he feels indebted to. When he says "their" world, he thinks he is talking about the un-superpowered, he isn't even aware that it comes across as corruptive because he feels its not his place to decide.

I think my only real complaint about the animated adaptations are that they remove some of Bruce's inner narration. At the beginning of the comic, when he saves himself from the car crash, he thinks 'This would be a good death but not good enough.' I love how this is bookended by the final line of 'This will be a good life. Good enough.'

I mean Bats didn't really kill him, he just twisted Jokers neck in a way that if the Joker moved his neck too much he would die. In the end Joker killed himself because as far as he was concerned his goal was acomplished. He made Bats snap in a way that made the people hate him and want him gone.

    • @garmisra7841

    • @Cooplander
      @Cooplander 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

@@garmisra7841 I wouldn't say it's a theory, it is strongly suggested in the graphic novel, as Joker's font becomes the exact same as Batman's after his neck is snapped. It's the only explanation that makes sense for the change in font and is completely in character for the Batman that Frank Miller has created here. It would have been very difficult to do in a similarly subtle manner in the film however, so it was cut out, which is inevitable with transitions from page to screen. Similarly, I would have loved for them to include Batman's narration throughout or Superman's narration after the nuke explodes, but they were obviously trying to cut out as much of the narration as possible, while still maintaining the core story. Narration just doesn't work as well in film/tv as it does in comics, sad to lose some great character moments, but it is what it is.

So, an electromagnetic pulse is one of the secondary effects of nuclear weapons (not to mention all sorts of other things like from the sun or lightning) basically will fry anything electrical or at least knock it out, unless it's inside a Faraday cage. One of the major fears of astronomers and the like are that the sun sends them out due to sunspots and the like, normally they aren't a big deal, but every so often a major smack hits the planet. Historically it wasn't an issue since, no electronics, last one happened in the late 1800s though and telegraph lines just shut down and routing stations started catching on fire. Today though, it would be catastrophic, satellites all over would just fry right out, electronics all over the planets like cell phones, all the systems we use for banking, stock trade, government communications...all the wiring in your cars or transit lines. Everything would just shut off or straight up catch fire. We'd, instantly, go into a state of having no electricity anywhere possibly worldwide...scary thing is it's not a question of if, it IS going to happen again, does once every hundred or so years, and we frankly have nothing set up to deal with it.

maybe a super duper super computer that holds all the worlds data housed in a massive faraday cage. with a sensor that tells when a nova is about to hit then absorbs all data (with pure privacy) while also turning everything off. and after a orecalculated amount of time. it turns everything back on and sends all the data out to the proper devices and clocks off until its needed again. to be fair taking all the data in the world into a central location might make a super computer.

Superman's actions are unlikeable from Batman's perspective, but in the larger picture he was keeping the world from falling apart, without him taking out that nuke, the world would have an all-out nuclear war.

But when it comes to this final conflict with Joker, he doesn't take that last step. Instead he paralyzed Joker, who in his own twisted last act of vengeance, uses what little strength is left to finish the job, thereby framing Batman for the murder of his greatest enemy.

2 things you asked about that I thought I'd answer. The most common conclusion by fans is that Batman did kill Joker, and Joker talking was really an inner monologue from Batman given that Batman realizes that breaking his code will put more people after him than ever before. The second thing is that Superman didn't expand from the water, he was absorbing the residual sunlight from all of the plants in the nearby environment since Superman gets his strength from the sun, among other types of large stars, and plants need sunlight to grow, so he was able to absorb the left over solar energy from the plants. That's why all of the nearby plants and trees died after he touched the first sunflower.

as everyone says: batman didn't kill Joker, only paralsysed him from the neck down. JOKER is the one who killed himself to make everyone THINK, Batman killed him, as his final last ditch joke.
THat's kinda what his whole dying speech was about, saying "they'll never know you didn't have the guts" and such. It's...kinda why he was still able to talk.
Some people wanna theorise that was in batman's head but that's dumb.
And yeah, sadly a LOT of elseworlds stories (which is the colelctive terms for these sorts of alternate universe stories in the DC universe) REALLY do superman dirty, most likely due to influence from this story. Ordinarily,Superman isn't this much of an unquistioning soldier who trusts the government. There's actually a LOT of stories where superman opposes government officials whoa re corrupt (hell, lex luthor was president at one point, you think SUperman would jsut be OKAY with that?). Hell one cmic even has him tell the american government to fuck off because he isn't just fighting for america, he's fighting for all human beings.

Superman has always answered to the world as a whole but having him be under management from the US government and fighting their wars is fucking stupid, Supes would never do that, he would try to prevent the war by any means necessary. He always has the world interest in mind. The one thing I hate about the graphic novels & these films are what they did to Superman.

TBf it's only really this one lol and Frank Millers stuff
Supermans own graphic novels understand him.

@@vishall8246 and what will u say about Injustice?what will u say about Red son? The newbies watch these type of stories and starts saying Supes is weak minded , a man can defeat him with a green rock. Like really? Thats why Grant Morrison never liked these type of stories about Supes. Every Bats defeat Supes stories are ridiculous af .Even Bullseye breaking glass with a piece of paper is much better than that.I would like these stories if the characters were grey af. Both Supes and Bats . They both should have been in the wrong somewhat and the result should have ended in a draw. That would be much better. Make stories about difference in their ideologies ( tho both are nearly same) and their friendship. They are great friends

Batman did break Joker's neck, but only enough to paralyze him. Joker finished the job, break his own neck to frame Batman. So in the end, Joker got the last laugh.

I really never liked Frank Miller's portrayal of Superman as a tool of the government. While this was *technically* true throughout the 50s and 60s, it was true of *all* superheroes, Batman included.
Superman's earliest stories showed him frequently breaking the law and acting as a revolutionary for social justice and change during the Great Depression, not only beating up your average criminal but also beating up dirty cops, corrupt officials, landlords, abusive husbands, wealthy elite, etc.
Dark Knight Returns was meant to show a Silver Age law-bound Batman return to his vigilante roots. If that's the case, then Superman should have done the same thing and flipped the bird at the government too.

The Dark Knight returns is the inspiration for Tim Burton's BATMAN movie. He even read The Killing Joke as a reference.
