This era of DC Animation was amazing. And all thanks to Dwayne McDuffie, this guy was literally a genius. He left us with incredible classics such as Green Lantern: First Flight, Crisis in Two Earths, All Star Superman.
Green Lantern: first flight was actually written by Alan Burnett, Dwayne Mcduffie wrote Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, All-star Superman and Justice League: Doom, and don't forget Bruce Timm was good friends with Dwayne Mcduffie and in a documentary he said: "when we were in the writing room, I would always want to hear what Dwayne wanted to write" and I think that's one of the reasons why he chosen Dwayne Mcduffie to write the screenplay for All-star Superman cause he 's a fan of the All-star Superman graphic novel with Dwayne Mcduffie. So in honesty Bruce Timm is also a genius that's my opinion And yes Dwayne Mcduffie was a genius I'm a fan on his writing. Seeing this bein young, I felt so amazed from the artistic level they went to perfectly capture what the comic had in environment and character designing, and even they did BETTER with The Dark Knight Returns. Gotham was meant to be the stand in for the seedier parts of New York, hence the similar tone. I'm kind of glad you chose this movie relatively shortly after you watched Batman Hush. When you reacted to that, you pondered how Falcone (The Roman) got those face scars. In Batman Year One, Selina scratched his face, so I kind of viewed Year One as an unofficial prequel to Hush. And as you'll notice Batman is still doesn't have all of his signature gadgets and methods yet as this is still very early in his career.
I think you mistook The long Halloween for Hush, but you're right about the rest and I'm even pretty sure that TLH the film was intended to be year two. :)

Just so you know, in some versions of Barbara Gordon, Jim's daughter, she's adopted and was, I think, his brother's daughter, but, I think, Jim's brother and his wife were in a car accident, and that left young Barbara Gordon an orphan, who Jim took in as his own. I think this version was more based on that story.

Written back in the day when this level of police brutality and corruption was considered a massive exaggeration. Maybe it's my love of Batman Begins talking but I feel like this initial 'era' is the best ground for Batman stories, giving us a Batman who's still working all the flaws out of his routine, not yet invincible, and a Gordon who's still trying to figure out if he can really ally with a vigilante against the overwhelming power and influence of the GCPD's paymasters.
I agree on that. His early years when people either didn't trust Batman or believed him to be an urban legend, Carmine Falcone and Salvatore Maroni had their hands around Gothams throat, the city was swimming in corruption, Harvey Dent was an up and coming DA and Gordon was one of the few good cops made for amazing stories. The Long Halloween is one of my absolute favourite stories

I highly suggest Justice League: Doom it's a fantastic movie also Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub Zero it has Dick Grayson aka Nightwing as Robin and he has a thing with Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl I love their relationship in the movie and the comics
I agree that Justice League: Doom and Batman: Subzero are very underrated DC films, in addition to other great DC animated films like Superman vs The Elite or Green Lantern First Flight. Especially Green Lantern First Flight and Batman: Subzero, I love Mr Freeze so much as a complex character and I honestly don't see him as a villain at all and when written well he such a tragic victim with such an empathetic motivation to simply save his dying wife. Btw I am also a fan of Dick and Barbara's relationship in the film and in general, and they are on my list of my top 5 DC couples. I'm also glad the two are back together again in the most recent Tom Taylor Nightwing comic book run.
