@danielmouatt5570 that's kind of my argument in Cthulhu settings like Delta Green. If we are ultimately doomed and our choices don't matter, then our choices are the ONLY thing that matter.

Glad to see this pop up right as I'm painting up the man himself for a game this Saturday. I think that the strongest argument for why Dorn is the best primarch isn't that he did something that nobody else could do, but that he did something that nobody else WOULD do. His skill in defense is less about his (admittedly very formidable) tactical and strategic skill and more that he and his legion were uniquely willing to suborn their will to the Emperor's. They care nothing for honor, admiration, glory, or any other personal gain. Every other primarch, even those most loyal, showed that the Emperor and humanity came second to their own designs. Only Rogal would sit out the entire Heresy with his legion, biding their time and their strength until it mattered most. Only Rogal would watch his brothers earn glory after glory while he sat in a fortress and watched data feeds. Only Rogal would reject the temptation to seek an alternative or easy victory and instead hold the Throneworld at all costs. Only Rogal would do all this while stifling his urge to fight and never giving in to the bitterness and hatred that saw Perturabo betray the Imperium. The Emperor knew this and knew that there could be no other primarch and legion trusted to that task. In fact, this may well have been exactly why Dorn was created. The primarchs are demigods created to defy reality and achieve the impossible, yet Dorn alone could and would bury those instincts and fight the war that the way that the Emperor required, no matter the cost and no matter the personal strain.
A lot is made of the Iron Cage, but that was really just Dorn allowing himself the freedom that every other primarch had exercised throughout the entire war - who else hadn't thrown themselves and their legion into insane situations just to take the fight to the enemy? The Khan abandoned the walls to fight the way he and his legion wanted; Russ abandoned Terra and Guilliman even left the Imperium behind when he thought that it was lost. The fact that Dorn held himself, his legion, and the Imperium together throughout the entire Heresy and only surrendered to his primarch instincts after there was nothing left to defend shows his character. He didn't choose his role and his duty, he was just the only man willing to perform it.

In regards to the fight with Fulgrim, if Fulgrim thought he could kill Rogal, he would have stayed. How could he resist the pleasure of killing another brother? Fulgrim left because he knew better. Rogal spent his entire time after the heresy began no doubt strategizing how to beat every single one of his brothers. He knew their weakness and strength compared to his and formulated strategies to overcome every single one of them. He is unrelentingly thorough, stoic in his duties, and loyal until the end of time. His test by khorne proved this, Rogal will never quit, never falter, and never submit to defeat as long as he lives. TO THE PRAETORIAN OF TERRA! FOR THE EMPEROR!

Whether you are a RD/IF fan or not, Dorn is arguably the greatest Primarch throughout the Heresy. He wasn't just defending Terra against traitor legions, but endless hordes of Warp Entities...Terra itself was falling into the Warp. The fact he held out as long as he did. I always wondered how would things have ended had the Ultramarines reached Terra before the boarding of the Vengeful Spirit.

Top reasons why Dorn was the praetorian of Terra*.
    1. Absolute loyalty without hesitation or greed.
    2. His actual ability in defence being his specialty
    3. He was capable of not being involved, humanity was meant to be lead by Humans not Demi gods. Would Gilliman try and force his will on Terror like he does Ultrama, yes he would. Perturabo even though he grew up on Olympia was still fragile to insults and snubs, something that would be common on Terra.

The Emperor could have simply taken both of them to Terra and the Sol system would have been truly impenetrable, making them work together to build something would also have healed some fairly deep resentment and loathing on both sides.

He got the right recognition for his achievements, was built with the right personality, and was assigned less than his fair share of nasty missions. How could Konrad have turned out if put under the oversight of Magnus rather than Vulkan to learn the truth of his sight? What about if Mortarion or Angron had been given more support from the Emperor upon their discovery? Another Rogal Dorn, probably not, but also probably remain loyal.

The Emperor with valor fought the Dark Gods with his faith, conquering within himself the last pure light that still shone in the Warp, becoming in fact the devout and just God of Humanity.
How does the Emperor, during the Council of Nikea, convince his sons of the importance of Librarians?
Using as example Sanguinius and Lorgar Aurelian!
Plus, to help Leman Russ and Corvus Corax understand.
Since the Emperor is the God of Humanity, thanks to Lorgar Aurelian all of Colchis is freed and purified from the cult of Chaos (thanks to his colchisian crusaders led by the true and pious Erebus: Truth Bearers).
Lorgar Aurelian is the one who then founds the Ecclesiarchy with his Crusader Order: the Frateris Militaris.
Lorgar Aurelian is like Ascalon Troyes, equal to Rogal Dorn and Sanguinius!
(Illuminarum is not a maul but a mace)
If Rogal Dorn is the Latin Catholic then Lorgar Aurelian is the Greek Orthodox.
And that's why the name of his Legion, the Word Bringers (Word Bearers + Truth Bringers).
    (Byzantine Crusader type)
Primarch Ulysses II Legion Iron Snakes Homeworld Ithaka; Primarch Casmero XI Legion Silver Skulls Homeworld Varsavia.
The Emperor uses the Traitors's Gene Seed to recreate the fallen Legions:
The new III Legion are the Red Scorpions (Primarch Devortus Gault, Homeworld Zaebus), the new IV Legion are the Minotaurs (Primarch Theseus, Homeworld Artherion), the new VIII Legion are the Black Dragons (Primarch Murad Agha, Homeworld Burso), the new XIV Legion are the Doom Eagles (Primarch Severin, Homeworld Cailleach), the new XV Legion are the Blood Ravens (Primarch Mikael Corveda, Homeworld Aurelia), the new XVI Legion are the Scythes of the Emperor (Primarch Kaius Krav, Homeworld Sotha), the new XX Legion are the Mortifactors (Primarch Arpaza, Homeworld Posul).

I love Rogal Dorn and the Fists. The other legions are very glorious, very this, very that. The fact remains the Fists and Dorn were the ones who held Terra, alone, for years. They held the palace and they were the ones who never broke. It was only in the Iron Cage that they and Dorn finally snapped. I still think that, if the Ultramarines had not come, the Fists would have annihilated the Iron Warriors. Rogal would have died with his sword in Perturabo's neck. The last Imperial Fist would die on a hill of gunmetal.

It was always a matter of time with Pert. His psychology just wasn't stable enough to not continue to be self doubting and neurotic. Once the crusade was far enough along he was too far gone to ever return.

I would say that it would be very unlikely, it may have delayed it enough that instead of joining Horus he and his legion would instead opt to go their own way instead of picking a side. The guy was just too maladjusted.

Dorn's biggest problem is his death. He was killed by mooks. Not a greater demon, demon primarch, ork warlord, or necron tombking. Not even a named chaos space marine. Just some randos. It sucks because otherwise he's pretty rad.

I'm still at the start of the video I just have to say something.
Rogal Dorn is actually, one of the best candidates for best Primarch in just about every way, I'm not here to contest that.
But to say that it was throughout the Horus Heresy that, that was shown is simply not true.
He had next to no character development before the siege.
I knew more about Ferus Manus than Dorn before the siege.
I don't for a second believe you intended to deceive anyone with that, But I do feel that it is an important distinction to make for those who have not read all of the books.

Dorn is one of the few Primarchs who do deserve to be in the discussion. He might even deserve it.
But... nah, man. Dorn did NOT win against Perturabo. He might have eventually won, but Perturabo was driven from the field by the Traitors self-sabotage (including Perturabo's own nature, he's not a blameless victim here) before it was over. If Perturabo had been leading the siege in the final days and then had been unable to crack the defenses before the 13th showed up, it would be fair to say he lost to Dorn. That didn't happen, tho.

      Perturabo quit. Dorn never quits.
Not only that, Dorn walked in to Perturabo’s own house where the Iron Warriors had EVERY advantage, and the Iron Warriors couldn’t defeat them. If Perturabo didn’t have the entire might of chaos on his side, he wouldn’t have even come close to breaching the palace.

It's hard to call it a win for Pert when the warp did all the heavy lifting. Every single major defeat at Terra was due to the planet sliding into the warp and daemons killing everyone. Pert never outplayed Dorn. Not one time. It's one of the reasons he left. He knew he would never get his fair win on Dorn at the siege and Mort and Fulgy were ruining his fun.

You have to ✋️ it to Rogal Dorn. No better HANDy man to build the defense of TERRA with a HANDful of marines. Chaos HANDED him a full FIST of force even with a win with one HAND tied behind his back militarily. In one HAND he defeated fulgrim while in the Other HAND alpharious. So lets give the man a HAND and with that standing 👏, by realizing this man had his HAND in all things that make him the greatest primarch.
. Because the primarch of the iron HANDS may have given his head, but rogal gave his fap HAND.😂

Other than my head canon being that Alex Jones is the lost 2nd primarch, and that I would follow that man into the Eye of Terror, regarding the official lore and unofficial non-head canon lore, Dorn is my favorite by quite a bit. If I had to be in a chapter, it would be the sons of Vulkan, but the Fists still take my respect to another level. A mobile, sentient, and very angry Great Wall of China that gets deployed in the way of almost every truly serious problem, its too cool, and Dorn is too commendable to not adore.
