I learned the HARD way, NEVER feel guilty about making a business decision for your career. Companies don't care when the story is flipped. Be polite, do your best for any transitions, but do what is best for you. Good advice, Ken.

How is it disrespectful for him to give a 2 week notice? He didn't have to give her any notice. If she gets rid of him before the 2 weeks, she just hurts herself. The 2 week notice is for the company, not the employee. This lady is a piece of work.

Question: Why is it professional that we give our employers 2 week notice when we end our employment, but our employers can terminate us on the spot and its okay?

Best of luck to this young man. If the restaurant wanted to dump him for whatever reason they would in a heartbeat. The manager's response to his announcement is exactly why people aren't loyal anymore. No one trusts anyone anymore and we live in a world where greed is running rampant and it is everyone for themselves. It's a sad state of affairs.

  • @Matt-cr4vv

You learn a lot about an employer when you turn in a notice. It’s a harsh reality when you learn young tnat companies have no loyalty or care about you at all. But once you know that you can move forward knowing just be respectful and do what’s best for your home. Can’t control what they’re gonna do

I never had any problems at all with my job. I put in my two weeks and my boss started pointing out things that he didn’t like about my work ethic. He said they have gone out of their way to accommodate my request.? I was so confused. He said you need to work really hard the next two weeks and don’t slack, you have put us in a bind. I was so confused I have worked my ass off since day 1. Screw character, I left so I hope they enjoy their bind! It was such a shocking interaction. I could not believe what had happened. It has made me think my boss was fake with me the whole time. The reason I didn’t go back is because I thought it would be a weird environment to be in after the things he said. It was better for me and my integrity 😁

No necessarily. Some companies don’t counter offer. I worked for a manufacturing company for 5 years and no person who left was given a counter offer the entire time I was there. Counter offers weren’t even given to key people who were a big loss to the company at the time.

I gave two weeks notice on my last two jobs. Both employers responded by just removing me from the schedule they had posted on the computer. Neither of the two even tried to get me to stay by offering me more money. Both times I left each employer, I went to a new job with even more pay. I left my last employer due to an inexperienced manager who was creating a toxic work environment, and was targeting me. The last manager thought she could retaliate by just removing me from the schedule. However I was able to start the new position right away. The managers attempt was unsuccessful. There are jobs out there that employers are having difficulty filling.

I work for a office that employees less than 50 people. I told a coworker that I had a job interview. My office manager confronted; asked if I was actively looking for a position. I told her the truth. That this job offer popped up in my news feed and I applied for it. I found out that she posted my job that day! I live paycheck to paycheck. It really upset me that she was going to terminate me for looking for another job. Yet, when the 20 something year old turned in her notice they offered her more money to stay. Plus, they listed my job for four dollars more per hour than what I make. Why was I looking for another job? We were told that due to the IT removing software from the managers computer that they could not complete annual reviews or give raises. A few weeks later, they promoted about five people including the office manager and gave those people raises.

Also, as a general rule If the strong negativity is coming from them it's really more about them. If it's coming from you it's really about you. God bless guys.

In my previous job, I gave my boss a 4 month notice and he didn't belive me. I told him I would work until the end of April and at the time it was December. When April came around I reminded him that this was April and I would be gone at months end. He arranged for my vacation and final pay check ten days later almost in the middle of April. So I guess, so much for being courteous and professional?

Stick to two weeks. Unless its some kind of executive position and you have a long personal history. If you don't need the reference, I wouldn't even give two weeks. If its under a 40k job no notice.

  • @thecommonsensecapricorn
    @thecommonsensecapricorn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

My only long term job that I really excelled at and got a raise, I gave A MONTH’s notice and my boss (the owner) flipped out on me. Now I can’t use her as a reference because she thinks I let her down. She said “Sydney don’t do this to me, I can’t afford to train new employees right now, I need you to stay. You can’t do this.” She doesn’t like me anymore in general, because she took it personally. It’s such a shame. Because of her immaturity and lack of professionalism, I don’t have a positive job reference.

I agree. I get being stressed out if an employee gives no notice, but a 2 week notice is much more than most employees give. Many just don't show up at their next shift. That has happened many times at my job. We didn't know that they left until they just stopped showing up.

    • @ericknoblauch9195
      @ericknoblauch9195 ปีที่แล้ว

When you are an at will employee with no contract, employment can be terminated by either party at any time with or without notice. When your hours are cut, and you cannot live on what they are paying you, you have to seek other employment. When a company you work for cuts your hours, they do not always tell you. They just do it without notice. That is because they have an agenda. On my last job, my hours were cut, and I started receiving paychecks for $0.00. All of my earnings were being taken for benefit deductions, and taxes. The company was trying to smoke me out through an agenda. I was offered another job, and gave my two week notice. They responded by just removing me from the schedule. During my career, I have seen other people who just walked out when the $0.00 paychecks started coming, and they gave no notice.

It just happened to me. I gave 2 weeks and they said no, you can be done today. Welcome to the trades. Similar to food service. Old guys in the trade told me, When you find a new job, just turn in your truck. 2 weeks is an outdated thing to do for most industries these days. All you can do is be the bigger person and know you left professionally.

You should never feel guilty for putting your interests or your family’s interests first. Sure, if the job was good to you, be polite and give a notice. But I can tell you that the minute your it becomes counter to your employer’s interests, you will be out. Oftentimes, they won’t even give you a notice. So if it is perfectly fine for your employer to put their financial interests first, why is it wrong for you to do the same?

You do not have to go back to get your paychecks. At my last two jobs, I asked human resources to do direct deposit. That was the way I was paid all along. One of the two said there would be a corporate check sent to my residence by overnight mail, and it did arrive. If they want you out immediately after giving notice, then why would they want you to come back to get paid? Some people who leave end up coming back, and recruit other former co-workers to come and work at their new employer.

I was at a job for five years. The last two years were ridiculous... pettiness overload. One night it was too much. I formulated my two weeks notice letter, waiting until everything was done for the next day and slipped it under the owners door.
They, the owner and the managers avoided me... which was smart on their part. I came in and clocked in with a minute to spare and clocked out on time. All the extra work that I had had dumped on me for years, I started shirking it. Sometimes I just said no.
I worked non stop so I could leave within minutes...boy, were they annoyed. At one point someone said that they didn't like that I was doing things like that; I was now picking and choosing what I wanted to do, to just saying no.
When they try to threaten me, I was like, " Or... what? Fire me? "
They were stuck like a deer in the headlights.
My last night there, my manager nor the owner said good luck, let alone look at me.
The owner started suffering from dementia, so the manager ran things until the owner died. The owner left the business to the manager.
They are still mad that I quit, they wanted me to be fired. Many of them are still there.

I had to find another job while my main job was under a remodel. The new job at the very least offered me a better position than expo. I only took the expo job because I knew I'd have my serving job back soon. An easy hire to get on a payroll during offseason.
A month goes by and They asked me if I wanted to serve and I said no because I didn't feel like sitting an hour and a half in traffic to get there and pay for parking when my other job is 10 minutes away and no pay for parking. They let me work out my whole 2 weeks.
It's unfortunate that restaurant got destroyed last year by Hurricane Ian. Good people man.

It would be great if we could move on from this old and tiresome 2020 insult. It’s misogynistic and ageist. It was also my mother’s name and she was the best person I ever knew.

Technically you don’t have to give two weeks notice away, but the employer can fire you on the spot

Being a bit of a devil's advocate, I think this conversation is one-sided. Was this his first job in F&b? Was he trained in house? Did he apply for the new job or was he headhunted? The fact that he called, in my opinion, is that he wanted to get some guilt of his chest... It's a free country and glad he's growing professionally, just think that both POV should be considered.
    Cheers ✌️

Who cares? None of what you mentioned matters. He doesn’t owe that place anything. You have to do what’s best for you. Just like the restaurant will do what’s best for their business. He wanted better pay and opportunity for growth/advancement. He found that and gave the standard 2 week notice.
The fact that he called means that he wants to know if he did the respectful and right thing. Doesn’t sound guilty

Two weeks notice is outdated like a paper application.

When an employee gives their 2 week notice, it’s best they go ahead & leave. The employer isn’t going to get much out of that employee as they have ‘I’m leaving in x days’ attitude. It’s not rude to let them go early- it’s just business.

@Wyatt Borden 6 weeks notice is a lot different than a 2 week notice. Good for you for still pounding away at your job- I wish more people had that work ethic.

It depends on the employee. Some just stop working once they are almost out, but others still bust their butts and do a great job. It's all about work ethic with people. If someone has always been a good worker, they will keep working well till the end.

Some employees call out after giving their 2 week notice. They use their sick pay, and accrued PTO days to ride out the last two weeks. I've seen people do it.

Down side he won’t have that place to fall back on later on , but sounds like he won’t need that if he is high demand

I don't he will ever have trouble finding jobs in a restaurant. If this one doesn't work out, there are a hundred other restaurant jobs that are needing people.
