It’s Time To End Two Weeks Notice | Robert Glazer | TEDxKenmoreSquare

  • So much of how we do business has changed in recent decades, but giving two weeks notice is still the most common way employees exit companies. It’s a broken paradigm that is detrimental to both companies and employees, and it’s time to try something new. Openly acknowledging that your company might not be the best fit for everyone long-term allows you to completely change the dialogue and relationships with your team members. Robert Glazer, founder and CEO of Acceleration Partners, introduces the Mindful Transition concept, a transparent, compassionate system that is proven to handle employee departures in a mutually beneficial way and solve employee dissatisfaction before it leads to disengagement and turnover. Robert Glazer is the founder and CEO of Acceleration Partners, a global performance marketing agency and the recipient of numerous industry and company culture awards, including Glassdoor’s Employees’ Choice Awards two years in a row. He is the author of the motivational newsletter Friday Forward, which reaches over 100,000 people each week across the world and inspired his upcoming book Elevate, coming out October 1. Robert is also the author of the international bestselling book, Performance Partnerships and is a sought-after speaker by companies and organizations around the world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      Some bridges just don't deserve to be left standing. Others do. It depends from job to job and from situation to situation. In Europe, almost any job contract has a notice period in writing that most of the times goes both ways (the ones who don't are low balls, so stay away), so it's already known. Usually it's between 2 to 4 weeks.

    • @Keenangoal
      @Keenangoal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well in the UK your breaking your contract of employment if you don’t serve your notice which can be up to 3 months
      You also risk not getting a reference which some new employers will class as essential before making you an offer.
      I cannot understand the big fuss when you have such a small notice period of 2 weeks

    This is coming from the stand point that management is always impartial, dignified and honest. Issue is that this is NOT always the case. As it holds true that not all employees hold up to established standards, the same can be with management. Work place bullying is a real phenomenon, where incompetent management works to derail and sabotage promising employees that threaten their sense of power. These are often undiagnosed, malignant, cluster B personality disordered individuals that have snaked their way to higher ranks. These kind of people dont deserve hard working employees, and in fact should be fired themselves, but typically wont as too many people turn a blind eye or are just not aware enough of these personalities disorders.

    Great talk. I don't want to lose any single one of my employees (and I really hope they never want to leave, either), but it's good to be thinking about this as the business grows. Practically, though, I had a bit of a light-bulb moment watching this, and I think I'm going to do away with "performance reviews," which have always felt cold and artificial to me. Instead, I'll set up quarterly meetings to talk to my team members and ask them how satisfied they are with their jobs and what we as a company can do better to support them.

      As an employee, and manager in past jobs, try try try to make it personal. I just had a "quarterly mtg" with a manager, who is nice, and it was completely form-driven. He let it slip in the "meeting" that recently one of the locations was 1 vote away from becoming a union shop, and that corporate was really trying to keep away from that....so I gathered that the actual reason for the new initiative was not a ground-swell, but a corporate directive that HAD TO BE done. Box checked, send the minions back out to minion. It felt quite impersonal, and if the managers are to be of help, that needs to change.

I got hired by a local state grocery store five minutes away from my house. I put in my two weeks at Albertsons but they ignored me. After telling them once more, they became petty and took all my hours away and only gave me one day. My current job is the best with managers that treat you like a brother. Big corporations typically don't care for thier employees.

      Big corporations are the worst. I just got hired at a privately own business in insurance and I have so much support there. My previous job was with Target, but the environment got toxic 4 month into being hired. My coworkers began slacking off, I was insulted one day by my boss for working slower than normal after having a miscarriage earlier in the morning and still showing up to work at night. Management needs to be better trained, they don't assume the role of leaders instead they are dictators using fear to control employees. My biggest concern is that some employees suffer depression and a managers bullying can cause an employee to potentially self harm or worse.

We're seen as replaceable, and if companies can cut corners to make an extra buck at the expense of their employees, you better believe they will. With that type of mentality, that we the employees are highly disposable, it's foolish to expect loyalty.

    If a manager or owner says the words family or team, RUN!!! A family doesn't cut ties until they have to. A team that never cuts a player over bad performance, is not a team. Too many owners allow managers to make personal terminations and not enough performance related terminations. If an employer says that business is down, but we are going to carry everyone through this, don't believe them. Truth is, the only people that carry anyone, are the people doing the work. As a manager, you got to get it right. If you must make cuts, you must get the low performers.

    Great talk "meaninfull work" really resognated with me, as recent graduate. I got three raises in my current job, but i suspect it was because in the time i have been here. There has been constant turnover in employees. Within 1 year they hired and fired 8 people. I left to a firm with same pay, but much more modern life /work balance

    We can be kind and give a 3 week notice and then they tell you not to come back right then and there despite them desperately needing a replacement. This happened to my mom AND my step dad.
    They’d been at their old job for years and were very loyal, when they decided to switch jobs due to a better income they were both told not to come back. This is both in the banking market and industrial market. I can not feel “bad” for giving a longer notice because if I get fired,
    I am not getting a two week notice for this.
    I understand and respect your point of view but not everyone has a heart like yours.

    It depends on the situation, if you want to leave a company on good terms, then you should give notice before leaving. This will give them time to plan for the work and in return, they should provide you with a good reference. Leaving immediately should be done only in an extreme circumstance imo. But ultimately the choice is yours.

I’ve literally been looking for a second job for about 5 months now got hired at more than 10 places and have quit all of them including no showing, interviews and first or second days. I don’t think businesses are ready for gen z.

    The example of a relationship is simply not right. In a relationship you and your partner are equal. If you own 0% of the company you work for, and have an employer who decides for you, you are simply not equal and do not owe that degree of openness.

    Interesting approach to a difficult situation Robert. I've always believed that you should be good to people when they leave, because you never know when your paths may cross again. This takes it a step further. Towards the end you comment on the general decline in civility in society. I think it could be fascinating to explore this topic more broadly in the context of other opportunity areas for businesses in their relationships with employees, customers and other stakeholders.
    A final note to whoever manages the staging of these events. You could tell from the audience reactions that there were a decent number people in attendance, but whenever the camera was flipped to the audience, they showed a largely empty section of the room, which leaves a poor impression.

    I just wonder, is there some law in USA that forbids to add longer termination periods to employment contracts ? the periods themself are symetrical - which is good. if you as employer propose to contract to leavefire at will, why are you dissatisfied when this contract is used by other side ?

  • @rustirab3465

    Depends on the job. If it's a throwaway factory job or something that fires everyone than obviously no. But if it's a smaller place and you were treated even half decent than just tough it out and do the two weeks if they let you, even if the pay is low. This is especially important in smaller towns where word of mouth goes around.

    If it’s a bigger organization with tons of people like a call center or a warehouse then I get it. But on a construction site, or if you’re in management or play a key role then notice is pretty important.

    • @missladygray
      @missladygray 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I understand what you're saying and communication is important and it's nice to give notice. However, in management, construction or any place where you play a key role, God forbid if you were to die tomorrow, they would quickly pivot and do what they needed to in order to cover your work or get in a replacement. The sooner you realize this, the better off you'll be in protecting yourself in workplace situations. Give notice if you want to maintain relationship or decorum with your previous employer. If you do not, move forward quickly and keep in mind you are always replaceable.

    I have mixed feelings about what this guy is selling.
    If a person works in a hostile, unsafe or toxic environment I'm sympathetic to those who quit on the spot.
    However I've experienced many people who quit without notice not even slightly concerned about the ripple effects their decision caused. The rest of us who stick around end up having to pick up the slack you left.
    I believe in the long run, the best policy is to provide a 2 week notice and leave the job with respect and dignity even is even if your supervisor or the job culture doesn't necessarily deserve it.
    Character matters.
