    Jeremy, I purchased my Yamaha PSREW310 keyboard and it works AMAZINGLY well. And it compliments my Yamaha DGX205 Grand Piano and my Korg EK50. I have the ability to combine all 3 at one time and that is a BIG advantage for gigs and playing in church. Thank you for your input. I made my choice and my choice is clear. The Yamaha PSREW310 is well worth the money for me.

      Jeremy, you hit the nail on the head about the difference in keyboard size, and how it affects you, and Shelly had the same problem I would at times, especially on the low end for some music examples tonrun out of keys, even though you could use the octave shift.
      I noticed that on my Roland Fantom X 61 key workstation.
      The mini key Yamaha Reface CP with the 37 keys can shift octaves on the fly, but that's still impractical on more traditional type piano playing, regardless of musical stylings or genre, compared to more contemporary phrased based playing styles.
      So yes, a very fluid and proficient keyboardist that is playing music with lighting fast runs, cross hand playing,or jumps, are going to run out of keys, at times even with 76 keys, depending on the music being played.
      I have a lot of sheet music that runs out of keys for a 61 key keyboard, but for the time being, the 61 keys are sufficient until I get more proficient.
      I can read difficult music, but have become so rusty from not playing so long, it's almost like starting all over again, and so much to learn and retain in memory regarding more advances scales, chords, improvisation, and all that jazz... or other styles. These two keyboard are a great bargain for the price, as is the Casio CT-S300. I just went for the more expensive Roland Go:Keys because it suits me better, yet lacjs some common features more other keyboards have. But for now, it works for me.
      Other than the Reface CP, when I am more advanced and proficient, the Roland V Combo VR 09, or the newer RD 88 stage pianos woukd be what I would want.
      But the loop jam feature of my keyboard, and the built in bluetooth compatible speakers, and other features suit me fine.

      I'd like to get an EW310 76er (sounds like a mountain bike wheel size) for my children to start out on. The reason being is not just the versatility either end, but the intention of playing keys in split mode for bass frequencies and more fun. A low freqency barking dog on the left and a high meowing cat on the right. Or two players side by side. The use of USB midi is important to make learning more fun and creative and having that key range particulsrly in split mode appeals more to what I would expect from it. So yes, it's worth the extra carrots.

    • @Ozzcaddy
      @Ozzcaddy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree with Shelley with having 61 keys, that you run out of keys at the low end, which in turn changes the sound of the song you are playing as you need to use the higher end keys, no matter what voices you may use.
      I currently have the Casio CT-S300 which JJacob mentioned, I have had for about 9 months now, having insufficient keys in the middle to low end to me is holding me back in progressing my learning.
      An 88 key keyboard is too long for storage and playing purposes for me, where the Yamaha PSR-EW310 is approx. 9.5 inches longer than the Casio-CT300. Appreciate the reviews that you do and make for us to make a sound decision when purchasing a keyboard.

    I feel the new Yamaha PSR E-373 and EW - 310 are excellent keyboards with really great features and functions. But if the Yamaha PSR E - 373 comes with the same sound engine, amplification system and features that are found on the EW - 310, then it is a good choice for beginners rather than paying $70 more. But, for classical playing the EW - 310 will be useful.

      @@ksu3849 its been a month so i hope you've found the answer but really its personal choice intermediate and above piano songs may ask you to play a low bass note and high notes at the same time in that case a full 88 keys would be necessary but.. That being said most songs don't do that and if your more concerned about playing piano than learning specific songs then you really could get away with say 49 keys especially if you want it too be portable lol you cant really drag around a full 88 keys that well

    Many classics need you to have 88 (!) keys as they are written to be played on the actual piano (which has 88 keys). Another GIANT batch of songs (modern ones too!) need you to have these 70+ keys, they just don't fit on 61 at all (missing low-end keys mainly). So YES, do DO need the 76 keys!

    When comparing the Casio CTX 700 with the EW 310, think of it this way: the going price of the Casio is $199 USD; the price of the Yamaha is $249 USD. It's better to buy as much as you can afford. If you have the physical space and room in the budget, go with more keys. 8 inches is significant when trying to fit in a small space. I like the cleaner interface of the Casio and the box style keys. The Yamaha has organ style keys. That's not readily apparent from images and websites or in videos.

    I tend to agree with you. However, my next keyboard will be a 76 key version. Why? I haven't learned to play bass clef, I can't read it. I want to learn. There are some things that really rewrite you to play a bass pattern that is unique, the Theme from Peter Gunn or The Pink Panther theme come to mind. Sure, I can create a style that has that bass line, and that would be helpful in some cases, but being able to play it and having the notes to play it is, IMHO, a better choice.
    Plus, there are times when I'm trying to play a certain chord and playing it in its root position instead of an inversion is desirable, but you run out of notes on a 61 key device.
    Just my opinion.

    Hi again, Jeremy...Interesting that, based on the sound from your video - the new PSR E373 and the 76 key version - seem to suffer from that old 'YAMAHA illness' of a 'mushy-sounding' middle register. The upper register is nice and bright (really acoustic-piano sounding!) and the lower register is solid...but the middle is - well...muffled (to my ears) Are you taking the sound directly from the instrument into the video, or are you using the ambient sound from the keyboard's own speakers into a 'room' mic?. I've written to Yamaha for years regarding this shortcoming. I have an REALLY old twenty-something year old keyboard (PSR-740) formerly the 'top of the line' for Yamaha's 61 key 'synth action' keyboards - and it sounds awfully close to my current PSR-S710 in that its 'sampled grand' sound is mushy 'in the middle'!! I run all my keys through stereo keyboard amplifiers - but even when the sound is listened to through decent earphones - the same problem is there. Perhaps YOU being a 'Yamaha influencer', you could ask them about this. I've tried and got the 'stock answers'...like, you need a better amplification system etc etc etc.

  • @michelmorin1937
    @michelmorin1937 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If you intend to buy one of these keyboards to use as a multitimbral synth with a DAW software, forget it. I bought one and the only patches that I can use with my DAW are the ones in the GM compatible 128 patches sound bank. Forget about using the nicer sounds in the other banks. The reason is that these low end keyboards are firmware crippled and won't accept MIDI bank select messages sent by a computer. These bank select messages are used internally but they are not accepted externally. When you look at the MIDI implementation chart, it is clearly written that these messages are accepted by the keyboard, which is why I bought it. To complement the Yamaha, I have to use a 20 years old module made by Roland, that accepts every MIDI message and surprisingly, has much better sounds than the Yamaha. Yamaha should correct the manual because it's not accurate. Or they simply could modify the firmware to make it more useful. Frankly, I regret buying it but can't bring it back to the store. As a standalone keyboard, it's nice but as a MIDI expander, it really sucks.

    • @michelmorin1937
      @michelmorin1937 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well, I finally found the solution to this problem, with absolutely no help from Yamaha. When I contacted them about this problem, they told me that the PSR-E373 keyboard was only good for beginners and that the possibilities were very limited. In fact, the solution to the acceptance of the bank access messages, was simply not doing what they mentioned in the manual. In the manual, they say that you have to put the keyboard in GM mode by sending a SYSEX message. In fact, if you do that, you have access only to the basic XG presets and even then, you can't access the variations. If you don't put it in GM mode or you send a XG reset message, then you can access all the voices in the keyboard with your DAW software. Most of the time, the voices in the other banks are a lot nicer that the basic presets. If you want to get the most of this keyboqrd with a DAW software, just don't do what Yamaha says in the manual and everything will be fine. Another benefit of this bank access is that you can play the thousands of MIDI files that were made for XG synths because it will respond nicely to them. I hope this can help someone here.

    Hi Jeremy, Gymnopédie nº1 is lovely 😊 Nice music for Christmas time.
    That said, I’d go for the E373 for portability and the EW310 for piano playing.
    Also, do not forget that the extra keys will be very convenient when you split the keyboard or to give more room to play the chords for auto-accompaniment. It might also come handy for organ players who can share the keyboard between two different organ sounds and play pieces which are meant for organs with a double keyboard or two different organ registers. Of course the EW310 doesn’t have a pedalboard but for the first two years of organ playing it might be a nice compromise.

    Dear Jeremy
    I've bought the new PSR-EW310, It realy is a fantastic electronic piano. However, what kind of stand are you using it on ? - can't seem to find the right one... can I use an universial one ?

    Jeremy, I like the PSR-E373 but I would like to be able to record more than two tracks. But it seems that the PSR-E373 has better sound than the previous models that have more than two track recording. It also has the lesson functions that the more expensive models. do not have. I guess I would hook the PSR-E373 up to a laptop via the USB cable and use something like Audacity to do multi track recordings. Also, is there a way to show the keyboard's display on a larger separate screen?

    • @JeremySee
      @JeremySee  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, there is no external output for the display unlike the higher end PSR-SX models.

    These are still good, if not better in some ways compared to the newer successor model now. Something with the midi on the newer successor model is an issue from memory.

      Do you have piano or instruments shop near you? If yes, try it out yourself. There's a personal connection a musician feels, which can't be explained.

    I think another key difference between the two is that EW410 has the leftmost key as an E while E373 has the leftmost key as a C. Although it won't be a huge issue. Usually Pianos have leftmost key as a C , it can be something to consider for someone eventually wanting to play a piano.

    General question. I'm helping my niece to purchase a keyboard. I've played piano for 50 years on a grand so am not very familiar with electronics and small keyboards. Is there such a thing as a 61 key keyboard with weighted, or semi-weighted keys? Thanks

  • @imogendunstan3603
    @imogendunstan3603 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would like to learn ludovico einaudi music I think I could get away with the 61 but I’m going to go with the 76 just to be safe with the promise of actually getting good at piano…I really hope you agree :)

  • @pascuba

    Would you still say that this is the best - as you did 3 months ago when you first got it? If you were looking for a keyboard (and definitely need speakers) that would be your last one you buy (I’m 68, so I don’t want to buy another one) - would you choose the E-373 EW-310, or the SX-600, SX-700. Is the SX worth paying $1,000 more?

      Yes it has MIDI in/out via USB. There are many, many apps that can add sound sample libraries to replace this instrument's on-board voices.
