Hey man, any ideas on how to locate/diagnose a noise coming from my engine? I have a 02 Tundra (2uz-fe). I recently replaced the radiator, and then several days later, the engine developed what sounds to be to be a "dry" metallic noise... like maybe a dry bearing somewhere. I removed the serpentine belt and spun the pulleys and tapped on them with a tool to hear them ring... the idler pulley sounded nasty so i replaced it, as well as a new serpentine belt. The noise is still there. Any tips on what next steps i should take? The noise goes up with the RPMs (like a blower whine, almost). Something definitely sounds dry and not lubricated properly to me 🤷
Did you start the vehicle with the serpentine belt off and see if noise was still there? Make sure nothing under the vehicle is making noise, also listen near the oil pan for noise with a mechanic stethoscope for connecting rod noise
@@motorcarnut just pulled the belt off and started her up. She sounds so much better. I checked the pulleys again while the belt was off. The ac compressor pulley will kinda make an audible *clunk* when I try and wiggle the pulley... the tensioner sounds a little nasty... the power steering pump pulley also kinda will wiggle like the AC compressor if I really tweak on it. The alternator pulley doesn't spin freely, but I think that's normal, right? Like, I can turn it by hand, but it won't continue to spin freely for a while like some of the others. You think I should just change the tensioner and see what happens? Like, how would a shop test to see which pulleys need replacing? Do I really need to get a stethoscope or something or do I just keep replacing pulleys?
@Laredo-c7g You can start with the tensioner and if the belt is worn that too. But I wouldn’t want you to keep replacing parts. The stethoscope is cheap on Amazon and can really pinpoint the noise. That’s what I do.
Usually when there is a problem because the chain should last the life of the engine. But if you don’t maintain the oil it can fail especially the timing chain tensioner and VTC actuator
@@motorcarnut I have a bit of noise ONLY on cold startup on my 2015 Honda Cr-V that lasts for a second and then it sounds normal. Mostly in cold weather and never on restart if car was driven recently. Is this something that is needed to be replaced for just that split second noise?
Hey I bought a motor for my gti and I took a video of it running but the people looked like they just ripped it out now the shop saying it’s out of timing they said the cams don’t match up when you spin the crank shaft to the point to be able to do the timing not sure what is called I just don’t no if it is really out of timimg

@@motorcarnut oh no 😭 I will try running it without the belt first 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 thank you for your speedy response 🙏 I really appreciate it
@Laredo-c7g No problem

Bent valve can be replaced. Its called a valve job. Sure its easier to just replace it but we fix not replace
What are you talking about? The short is timing chain tensioners??
How to check?
Was explained. Also if you hear loud noise from the front cover area

When is tine to replace a timing chain on a K 24 Honda vtec engine? Is maintenance to replace or only if there symptoms of a bad chain?
Only if a bad chain/chain noise
