      I'm 'about' the same age and one of my many jobs was working in a garage where H & S never existed!! I would reline brakes and sand them (what asbestos?), rebore engines, replace bearings etc - and my least favourite was spraying the underside of a car with underseal!! But in fairness Vauxhalls in 1960 would disappear in rust before the engine !!

    A brilliant video which shows a fully skilled mechanic who knows how to do the replacement of a cam belt in 4 hours. Unbelievable but that is why the charge of £1100 is such a realistic price - less than 2p per mile. Rather more complicated than when I used to change my Austin A35 timing chain at the roadside!!

    • @gasgas2689

      £1100 is the price before adding 20% VAT which for those watching overseas is a tax added to anything we in the UK buy. Including the tax we pay on fuel. I.E. we pay fuel duty tax, and then on top of that we pay 20% on top of the fuel duty tax. They are taxing our tax payments. Don't you just love it?

    I'd never have believed it till i saw it, a rubber timing belt immersed in hot oil 😮 we've gone from chains to belts, belts are best simply because you've got a service interval determined by age/mileage, simple and easy to change, back to chain, no service interval, maintenance free philosophy, till your tensioner fails or chain slips through wear/stretch......to this, £1100 as it stands now to change, I'd bet all the parts from Ford are £500, it wouldn't shock me if they more, it really wouldn't 👍

    • @558vulcanxh
      @558vulcanxh 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +16

      I'm aged 79 now and changed many cambelts with our kids, but it was regarded as a crime to get oiley fingerprints even on the new belt .
      Changing the belts was a fairly pleasant interesting job in the 1980/90s and only cost about £80inc the water pump . One volvo, several Vauxhalls ,and Leyland cars . Made a rule to change them at 40 000 miles. We thought Ford's were bad then but now, they and their likes are criminally badly designed.

      @5084204 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      @558vulcanxh I would say, rather accountants. More failures=more money on spares. But, they have made a mistake in their calculations-those engines fail BEFORE the warranty expires-there is like 3 months wait at the dealers for the warranty repair. Ford's response-theyvwant to shorten the warranties AfTER the car sale!!

    Spent two years working for Ford and did a lot of these wet belts and saw a lot of failing and failed belts way before the recommended replacement interval of around 140k!!! Everything you say is bang on. Only thing I would’ve done differently is remove the starter motor to lock the crank to undo and torque the crank pulley bolt. Personally i’d use a vacuum bleeder to fill the cooling system other than that your work methods in this video are top notch

    Great informative video with a good balance of banter! Would love to know the system you use for tracking the job times etc as I run a garage aswell!

    I've a 2015 Transit Custom owned from new. Don't think mine has the wet belt nonsense, but if it had, you look to have the skills required.
    Nicely made video

    What a complete ball ache of a job. I was looking at a few Transit Custom campers a while ago and a fair few had new engines. I wondered why - guess I've found out now!
    Great video 😊

    Great vid , most garages don't even know about wet belts even ford main dealers ... would like to see the procedure for a 2011 connect if you get a chance
    .... must be easier than that transit .
    . Thanks

    I hate wet belts I grew up with the early york 2.4 engines one drop of oil on that belt and it was good night Irene nice clear shotds of how its done fully explined out why you change the timing cover crank pully and sump

    Another brilliant Ford product. They did not wish to be outdone by the fuckery GM can muster. Your prices are very good. I'd like to pay "only" about $1500USD for a repair of this nature. Obviously a favorable exchange rate, but this job would easily run north of $2k at most US shops. That's a comprehensive job. Well done.
