Amazing video, ihave a mapped audi TT, i had it serviced just 1 week ago, the garage empty the old oil and then dont top up the new oil, the oil light came on 3 days later, now its got engine warning light and they claim its the chain, would lack of oil do that please x
Thank you so much, the garage didnt put oil in after the service, now the chain is jumping and they want to charge me 1000 for their mistake! Thank goodness for good people like you explaining these things ❤
Older video but I have a 2014 accord that oddly enough, runs great. Just bought it for my daughter for Xmas and come to find out, has the known issue of tensioner causing slapping noise of the belt til engine warms up. Anyway, went to change it and discovered the timing from crank to cams is about 4 teeth off on both cams. No CEL and, like I said, surprisingly runs fine. Any potentially negative things I should look for before letting daughter have it on the road?
You have to follow the repair procedure for timing belt installation, but should also make sure the valves didn't get damaged before installing the belt.
i have a 1988 honda crx that someone wants me to see if i can get running. i found that it has jumped time. not exactly sure why it jumped yet but that is my question. how do i diagnose weather it is the tensioner or not. and how would i know if it messed other things up ? should i just try to fix timing and see if it runs?
That's the easiest thing to do, readjust timing, changed tensioner and belt and see if it starts. Could of bent valves but if it runs good it didn't. Good luck!
Thank you for the explanation. I changed the tensioner on my sons 2009 Corolla. I believe during this process I made the chain jump a tooth. We are now getting a P0017 code. My question is, car seems to run fine, is it drivable for a few days? Seems to run fine. I just don't want to cause issues. In fixing this issue, can I just open the valve cover and loosen/remove the tensioner. Put at tdc and make sure the cams are aligned and to correct the timing or am I going to have to remove the entire cover? Can I adjust timing from the top with only the valve cover off? Thank you.
@@motorcarnut . Thank you for responding! That's the plan put the crank at tdc and timing mark. Open valve cover and see where it is. Undo tensioner and move cams to correct position. Put tensioner back on and manually inject the tension with a long pic. Then turn the crank a few revolutions clockwise and verify timing marks are correct on cams. I really don't want to open it all up. Hopefully this will work.
I got my timing chain fixed , but its still rattling really loud on start up. But after its reaching full operating temperature it runs withoutnnoise or other issues. My car was still behaving odd and jerking but after i changed the spark plugs and coils it was alot better . Still does a chain "slap" at the time of start up though. Wondering how am i supposed to fix that....its a 2011 vw tiguan 4 motion 2.0T SEL
Did they replace the timing chain tensioner? Uselly these engines don't have a start up rattle unless chain is stretched or the tensioner is going bad. These engines have a bad older design tensioner that must be replaced to updated version. I have many videos on this issue .
@motorcarnut I'm not sure, but I did have to buy the part myself before he did the job so I'm going to attach the photo and/or link go the exact part I bought , so that should help find that out. Another mechanic asked me if he only changed the chain and that could be an issue because there's a "malfunction on startup" showing. I also had the camshaft position sensor changed a few months before the chain got fixed , however the code for that came up again (p0341) it think it was , so they said they just cleared the codes and that helped with it constantly saying "service engine now!" Everytime the RPMS were too low while driving. However the check engine light came back on and they said it's because the vvt solenoid is soaked in coolant since I previously had a coolant leak and because of the "malfunction at start up".
Yes do that so I can take a look. Also I have many videos on these engines with valve train code like the cam bridge and oil control valve you might want the mechanic to look at or you too to help be informed.
Is it just as expensive to correct timing after a new chain and tensioners installed as it is to correct the timing after? Just had the job done and I think timing is off a little
My car wouldn't start one morning , mechanic said it has very low compression (10) across all 4 cylinders on my bk1 2.0t , they said the timing went out on start up (the starter) and not while driving , so maybe a few hundred RPMS , do u think it would've done alot of damage or is the engine salvagable?
I had my 2011 hhr timing chain put in my car . It has a engine vibration in the motor. Showing no codes. Runs good has power. And the vibration is worse when it's cold in the cold mornings. Could the timing be off a notch?
My 2002 Mitsubishi eclipse I believe jumped timing. My car over heated because I didn’t have enough coolant in it and I had it flushed and then it was refilled with coolant a couple times later fown the road it completely just stopped and I couldn’t push the gas or break and I pulled over and hit the emergency break and then cut the car off!! It will crank but not start and the mechanic said that is a good sign!! Does that sound like a jumped timing belt?

Hello, I got a 2015 jaguar xf premium, and whenever I’m on the freeway I can’t go over 70, and when I stop at a light my car doesn’t wanna accelerate, the brakes and steering wheel turns hard, I have to turn off my car and turn it back on for it to work again, what do you think it could be?
I do have a question. I drove back from a 2hr drive. Parked my HEMI and next morning it was as though the battery was dead until after a few attempts to crank it finally started cranking. Now, no compression in at least 4 cylinders. No symptoms, no noises. Just parked and next morning. DOA. any thoughts?
I was driving on the freeway got off exit starting idling bad then i had to keep my foot on the gas or it would die and when i was stop and went to go again hardly any power but once it got goin it go but wouldnt go past 70 changed spark plugs coils camshaft sensor crankshaft sensor fuel injectors still missfiring no compression in 2 cylinders gas smell on a couple spark plugs mechanic said i think ur timing jumped will it do that now it wont start at all trys to just wont turn over
Please help. So my car serpentine belt broke, and i replaced it, soon after i started hearing a slight rattling noise, but now that noise is getting louder, is it possible that the rattling noise ( only comes when accelerating, sometimes on sometimes not) is caused by a failing timing chain...? 🤔
hi, what is a lot a money?? 800?? 1000?? I have a 2016 jeep grand Cherokee that it might need time realignment. how much would that cost in your experience.
I have an 2004 bmw e 46, 318ci I have removed the head because of blown head gasket and now realized that I have messed up the timing when I was dismantling it. I have forgotten to lock the flywheel and mark the chain. What would you advise when I am assembling it back? I got the locking set from amazing and have locked the camshafts when I was removing it but because of lack of patience I missed the step of locking the flywheel and now my concern is that, the chain may slipped and the crankshaft to move a few teethes.
You have to get the service information for your specific engine online try your library they have great repair manuals free of charge. You have to make sure timing is 100% or you will get codes and have to do it again.
Dam I think my lack of oil in engine made my tensioner malfunction. Timing chain is jumping and car wont start. Checked and cleaned all sensors with crank and camshaft timing then noticed my oil was low and chamged it then tried starting and already had engine cover off too see valves and the chain guide was broken and timing chain was jumping causing the crank no start . That’s a dead miss. Just to rule out a sticking valve I would compression test that cylinder to make sure it has at least 120psi cold. Also can be fuel related on that cylinder as well. If you have spark compression and fuel it should not miss fire. A vacuum leak on that cylinder can cause that too

My 2015 Toyota Sienna has p0012 and p0015, but it has clean oil at the right level and no symptoms. Is it my timing chain? It seems odd that i would have two different codes for one bad sensor. Then again, i feel like a timing chain would produce symptoms. I would also expect a timing chain issue to cause more than just those two codes
I jumped timing on my 2014 Chrysler Town and Country with a V6 3.6 L pentastar engine. I was an idiot and did not get the marks lined up. Any suggestions? Do you think I could tackle re-timing the valves and everything? Also do you think I would need to pull the whole engine?
Well I took it all apart and got the timing right but now the vehicle will not start. I'm wondering if one of my valves is stuck open or I messed something up. Any ideas? I just took the cam phasers off and readjusted them so they were lined up with the timing marks. I didn't take the whole front cover off. Do I need to do that??
I have issue with engine so carry out overhaul work but after overhaul complete engine not starting so, i check deeply and found if i drain oil from chamber vehicle starts and if pour even 1 liter oil it stremble and stops, what should be causes?
Hi, I have a 2004 Honda Accord. Changed Serpentine belt. Drove for 2 minutes, shut car off, crunk it back up.. the battery light and oil light came on. Shut it back off and it wouldn’t crank back up. Used OBD2 scanner and no codes detected. It cranks but won’t start. Just keeps spinning, what could it be?
Idk, but those problems are related to the serpentine belt being broken but you replaced it, seems odd that after the belt change you have these issues. Check cylinder compression to see if the engine is mechanically healthy. And take it from there.
@@motorcarnut the belt never broke. It was shredding so I changed it. I took it back off and retraced the steps to make sure it was on correctly, still nothing. Also, the battery is continuously going dead. I have to give the car a jump. Replaced the starter, still nothing.
@@motorcarnutI have this same engine for my 2020 Forte GT-Line a few months ago. I can’t get this thing to start for shit. 😂! I did realign the camshafts and crank shafts and it has a smoother crank like it should but man I can’t get it to find that compression stroke. I’ve even changed my head gasket which was in perfect condition as well as checked my valves (both intake and exhaust). My chain stretched just a little but enough for it to throw the entire engine off.
Hi I have an 2020 Hyundai Elantra 4 cylinder 2.0l I have the p0017 code. Changed the exhaust and intake solenoids I was told it might be the engine before it was seen. No knock. Chain is still intake hasn’t been driven since the code popped up. Is there any way that it’s not the engine and just the chain and sprockets maybe?
Yes, These vehicles are known for timing chain stretch and that will cause that code. I would replace the chain and tensioner at a minimum to be ok again.
I know this exact engine. I’m trying to figure out my situation as we speak. My chain slipped or jumped. I replaced the head gasket and checked the valves which are all in tact but I still have no compression. I’ll probably have to redo the timing procedure itself. It could just be a simple error on my behalf.
how do you tell the difference between a Broken and a Jumped Chain?, and if a chain is broken is it a costly fix ( labor time not the actual part of the engine )
You have to gain access to the chain depending on vehicle the easiest way is to remove the valve cover. If it’s broken you’ll see it right away. Again, depending on vehicle it’s a big job but prices vary greatly so I can’t just give a dollar amount and be accurate.
My car sounds like it wants to start but it don’t and it don’t sound like shitty when you try to turn over it just sounds like the battery is dead but it’s not ? It’s those are my sensors?
Can try with a long pipe and braker bar on crankshaft bolt or drop pan if that don't work and remove rod bearing caps more time consuming but sometimes you have no choice.
Chysler 300 v6 3.5 08 well maintenance kept very well with everything everything still original I lost power yesterday driving on highway and it sounds lik it wants to turn over but it won’t
Was same , but I have to rev it high right after turn on engine for idle , sometimes goes to 0rpm but have my foot close to the Gas Pedal 2003 DIAMANTE MITSUBISHI 3.5 V6 6G74
Bought a 2011 Cadillac SRX, a few days later a code popped up saying crank shaft/ camshaft coalition or something like that. My mechanic changed them all but said I still may need to replace the timing chain. Is there any other way around that, to at least by me some time? The car drives good except there’s a little loss of power going up hills but no rattle at all.
@BigpapaPapa-ud6qm The one in the video is not a Nissan and I wouldn’t know why you can’t get the water pump out?? I don’t know what you did or didn’t do?
Great explanation. Please check out my recorded noise of possible timing chain/tensioner related issues in my channel under Shorts. Is that noise at idling/slow rpm caused by bad timing? Or is it just the piston slap? Thank you.

Almost because you have to take everything a part again.
Is it possible that the timing chain tightened. Because my engine is slow cranking and not turning over it seems to needs more power to the starter
No it’s not. If your battery is good and fully charged it might be the starter motor starting to fail or the engine jumped timing or engine is seized.

I have a hyundai i20 with vvt can not drive it starts but rpms are not stable , system code p0014 , have checked the solenoids for vvt but thy r gud , the camshaft and crankshaft timingchain markings are not coming up on the tdc position together where thy shud be , how can i check if camlobes or camshaft intake or exhaust are not in timing
You have to find the procedure for your particular vehicle and reset crankshaft marks along with both camshaft marks. I don’t have info on an i20
I have a 2002 Hyundai sonata 2.7 liter v6 i just bought it deove it 164 miles parked it went outside the next morning wouldn’t crank just flooded itself out I replaced coils wires and plugs no change I think it might be a timing belt issue but I’ve never her of one jumping like that help
Also it threw the po340 code which is camshaft sensor
Could be, that is a timing code
It was I finally got past the motor mount and got the inspection cover off the belt had cracks all in it It was old and worn out and jumped some teeth. Thank you for the video really helped me.
Great to hear that, sure no problem!
The solenoids are probably going bad if you don’t hear and timing chain noises
@@motorcarnutthank you!!
@mycoffee2654 welcome
I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra and the timing chain is loose. Do you recommend fixing it and what would be the cost?
Yes because it will jump and cause more damage. You have to check with local mechanics for prices
i have a 3sfe 2.0 engine on my toyota caldina. i replaced my timing belt at it broke in less than 1000km later. what could be the reason?
thanks
Too tight, worn sprockets or defective belt.
You don’t have to pull the engine and if you did it before why wouldn’t you be able to do it again?
Well I took it all apart and got the timing right but now the vehicle will not start. I'm wondering if one of my valves is stuck open or I messed something up. Any ideas? I just took the cam phasers off and readjusted them so they were lined up with the timing marks. I didn't take the whole front cover off. Do I need to do that??
And just so you know I started the engine with the timing off and it ran for a little while then died.
Do you think I need to pull the heads off and replace the valves?
Try doing a compression check first, if compression is good on all cylinders the timing and valve should be fine.
I have issue with engine so carry out overhaul work but after overhaul complete engine not starting so, i check deeply and found if i drain oil from chamber vehicle starts and if pour even 1 liter oil it stremble and stops, what should be causes?
Sounds like you messed something up and have a head gasket problem or valve timing is off.
.
Sounds like you have a short somewhere. I have a video on parasitic draw you might want to check out
If the chain is stretched ,will the engine still be able to start?
Depends if if jumped a tooth or more, so yes or no
@@motorcarnutI have this same engine for my 2020 Forte GT-Line a few months ago.
@@motorcarnut thank you I really needed to hear that
No problem!
Mazda zy always missfire after few distance ichanged plags fuel pump air filter no change help me please
Could be a bad coil
Ok thanks
I know this exact engine. I’m trying to figure out my situation as we speak. My chain slipped or jumped. I replaced the head gasket and checked the valves which are all in tact but I still have no compression. I’ll probably have to redo the timing procedure itself. It could just be a simple error on my behalf.
Chain is known to stretch but that won't cause no compression in all cylinders.
@@motorcarnutso I’ve heard. So what should I do next? I just want to save as much money as possible before taking it to a mechanic.
My isuzu 250 De teq Don't want to start it showing that the camshaft sensor is the problem but i did change them but still i get the same results
Probably the timing is off and not the sensors
What problem in this engine?
Bad timing chain tensioner.
how do you tell the difference between a Broken and a Jumped Chain?, and if a chain is broken is it a costly fix ( labor time not the actual part of the engine )
Hard to tell just by your description but make sure battery is fully charged. Ignition, fuel and compression should be checked.
I just did my time if chain and when I let go of the clutch I hear something what could it be
Idk, don’t sound related? Was the noise there before timing change?
It was not I think I didn’t lock the vct acuator idk if that could cause the sound ?
@delapaloma6934 what vehicle?
@@motorcarnut Honda according to 2008 2.4
Do you have the start up rattle? I have a video on that fix too
Amazing video!!!
Glad you liked it!!
Would you engine be tight?
It could be if it’s hitting the valves
My 4.0 ford engine out of time valves hit locked up trying to remove cant rotate to access the flywheel bolts what can I do need to remove the engine
Can try with a long pipe and braker bar on crankshaft bolt or drop pan if that don't work and remove rod bearing caps more time consuming but sometimes you have no choice.
Code p0016 popped up what is that ?
Timing code
@@motorcarnut so that’s the belt ?
Don’t know what vehicle you have but either belt or chain. But also can be a sensor
Chysler 300 v6 3.5 08 well maintenance kept very well with everything everything still original I lost power yesterday driving on highway and it sounds lik it wants to turn over but it won’t
If you have a bad timing chain, will your engine still run
Yes and no depends on how bad it is but it can run
@@motorcarnut my radio, and dash lights keeps coming on and off, but it still got me to work, the RPM was at 0
Was same , but I have to rev it high right after turn on engine for idle , sometimes goes to 0rpm but have my foot close to the Gas Pedal 2003 DIAMANTE MITSUBISHI 3.5 V6 6G74
If it breaks, you're F****d.
No, if it jumped it will again and leave you stranded.
My timing chain was fixed with new starter but still won’t stay started
I don’t understand what you mean?
What i absolutely love is how detailed and informed your video is. Well worth a sub and looking forward to more informative content!

I tried to replace my water pump and I couldn't get the timing chain off of it
Don’t know what vehicle you are referring too?

The same 05 maxima 3 2
@BigpapaPapa-ud6qm The one in the video is not a Nissan and I wouldn’t know why you can’t get the water pump out?? I don’t know what you did or didn’t do?
It that a dodge motor cause I think I'm having that issue
No Toyota
Nice job!! Well explained. scribed!

Greetings for u from Iraq
Hello and Thank you!
Nice video!
Thanks!
Great explanation. Please check out my recorded noise of possible timing chain/tensioner related issues in my channel under Shorts. Is that noise at idling/slow rpm caused by bad timing? Or is it just the piston slap? Thank you.
I just heard them, so from the speed of the noise i'm pretty sure it's a rod knock.
@@motorcarnut is that mean timing chain system would not fix the problem?
@gotsu21 correct.
@@motorcarnut Hello, could you check #2 and #3 under "Videos"(longer than 1 min)?
2. Cold Start - Idle - Drive - Rev - Idle
3. Warmed Idle - Rev (The idling sounds like diesel engine while no noise at revving?)
I actually think the belt is better. The chain seems like it's planned obsolescence.
No belt is rubber chain is steel, no comparison
