    For a trip to Alaska in 2015, I had a set of Heidenau K60s mounted on my R1200GSA. They rode well, handled moderate off-road scenarios such small rocks in creek beds or the Dalton Highway just fine, and gave good mileage. After 6K miles they still had considerable tread depth. However, I found that the rear tire will hydroplane on even slightly wet pavement above 65 mph. I would certainly consider putting another set on my bike, if I did a similar trip again.

    Y'all missed the Shinko 804/805. Probably the best 50/50 tire for the money, bar none. Drag pegs in the twisties, serious off road prowess and easy on the wallet. Pretty decent mileage is just the icing on the cake!

    I have the K60 Scout on my 1290SA. They’re a great all round tire, capable enough in the dirt and gravel...unless it’s wet, then that continuous centre line really hampers the ability to churn through wet dirt and grass, and it’s difficult to get traction. I actually got pretty badly bogged when riding remotely solo, not a great experience, and I’m sure the TKC80, Mitas EO7 & up, or the big block tires would have ploughed through

  • @dalehunt1383
    @dalehunt1383 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've used several sets of TKC80's on a R1200GSA and a set of Scouts. The Scouts front tire is by far the loudest tire I had on my bike. 40-45 mph and it howl's like crazy where as TKC 80's are a little bumpy but relatively quite. Both types are great tires for on and off. Getting ready to mount Motoz Tractionator next.....

    • @JeffinTD
      @JeffinTD 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I have scouts on now and I was surprised how loud they are. They also loose grip on wet roads more abruptly. Liked TKC 80’s better, except their short life. May try Mitas E07+ next time.

    I'm not a Spurg, but I'm running Conti Trail Attack II (3rd set) on my 2014 BMW R1200GS (currently 66,000+ miles) and getting 20,000+ miles on both the front and rear. Yes, 20,000+. The OEM tire, Michelin Anakee III had over 13,000 at replacement and had about another 4,000 miles remaining.

  • @23DuDe
    @23DuDe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    There are heaps of more off road biased tyres that are knobbies and DOT legal. TKCs are definitely not the most dirt orientated ADV tyre available. One example is the Dunlop D606 - they are also half the price of the TKCs (at least!)

    • @Lifeisawheelie
      @Lifeisawheelie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Duane Dempster in Denmark, d606 costs twice what pirelli mt21 costs. I guess prices fluctuate depending on location and accesibility

    • @23DuDe
      @23DuDe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! That's a surprise in some ways, but yeah you are probably right about location and accessibility. Most European tyres are expensive in Australia compared to Asian sourced tyres, but here they are sold as 'premium' tyres too, so that contributes to the prices we pay. Dunlop are just considered a cheap, but reliable, option for us, in my opinion.

    • @Lifeisawheelie
      @Lifeisawheelie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@23DuDe i think dunlop d606 just got popular in my region, that made them hard to come by which makes them suddenly worth more money :)
      I know that my go-to german vendor started importing the popular maxxis tyres for honda groms and such.
      Its considered a rare exotic delicacy over here :) from new anglia hehe. Hence prices are a tad higher than they ought to be. I'm getting Mitas tyres because they're exceptionally cheap, being situated in an almost neighbouring country to the Czech Republic :))

    • @Iamfirebird360

      Oliver Allen I tried them on a Triumph 1200 Explorer and didn't like them. They were pretty ordinary on wet bitumen and definitely not good on wet clay as I put the big girl down riding on that. Lucky I was only going slow and there wasn't much damage but I wouldn't put them on again. It's really hard to find an adventure tyre that hooks up well and gives acceptable life

  • @ian2958
    @ian2958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Heidenau almost as good offroad as the TKC ? Maybe on solid dry ground... But don't adventure your K60 equipped bike into humid muddy environments, the Heidenau WILL fail you because of the continuous center line. You need those spaces described on the TKC80 to keep going. If you just roll through some mud it's still ok with the Heidenau. But come to a wet climb or, worse, to a stop on a rising slope. You will struggle like hell (and most probably fail) to get moving again - exept for going back downhill. The Heidenau will last longer, but it comes at the price of not being good in all offroad situations.

    I hate it when people say "ADV" instead of "Adventure." They're both 3 syllables, both just as easy to say, but "Adventure" sounds better, doesn't sound like ATV, and isn't a pretentious not-quite-an-acronym. Shortening Adventure to "ADV" makes no sense to me.

    Any good suggestions for a 50/50 or 70/30 (street/dirt) tube type tire for a 2005 BMW F650gs single? Seems like all I can find that take a tube are really aggressive...like the TKC80. I think the Bridgestone Trailwings came on some of these bikes stock but I've seen mixed reviews. I really wanted something like the K60s or MEFOs but they're tubeless.

    • @someguynamedglen
      @someguynamedglen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably got your answer already, but you can run tubeless tires on tube-type wheels. As long as you still use a tube in there, you'll be fine.

      18-21 is common for dirt bikes and dual sports, but most adventure bikes with a 21 inch front tend to use a 17 inch rear: mainly the popular BMW F800GS, Triumph Tiger 800XC, KLR650, and DR650. I grant you that the Africa Twin and some of the KTMs use an 18 inch rear. -DrewZilla
