Indrojit is a batchmate and room mate and friend from TISS and he।has done a brilliant work, sadly this brilliance is misdirected and misplaced. I believe this book is more pandering to his UK peer academic community rather than make any serious dent in India. I wish that he came to India , stayed for a few years and then produce a book that is nuanced and truely reflective of current times. I don't want to comment on the other two folks in the discussion

@@Aashutosh_Payaal28 the fact of the matter is that the Hindu nationalists, who considered this land as sacred, were against partition even if they did think that the Muslims formed their own ghettos in this country.
My point about Ambedkar's book is precisely to point out the selective appropriation of Ambedkar (who wanted a complete transfer of population) by people like Tharoor.

Muslims of present day India led the movement for Pakistan. They got what they wanted in 1947. They should have migrated after partition. Hindus/Sikhs moved to India. A near complete exchange of populations would have solved these tensions permanently.

One of the goals of Islam, clearly stated and repeatedly, is to create a caliphate which is basically a theocracy with sharia as it's law. If people still as naive questions like you do even after the fact that all most all Muslim countries in the world are openly Islamic (even countries like bangladesh and malaysia have Islam as their official religion) except for the ones who are under military rule (which turn Islamic the moment they come out of dictatorship) or formerly communist countries, where Islam is kept out of politics, I am not sure if there is any answer that can be given. Turkey was one clear exception, but it's pretty clear the direction that it is taking.

Treating others with respect is not a tenet the minority religions are meant to practice! They believe and treat others with a sense of superiority, exclusivity and in some instances with contempt. You can spin it in any which way but the fact will remain! Bharat is what she is , only because the majority still are Hindus who are, in spite of their sense of inclusivity, still are made to feel apologetic! People like Dr Tharoor, a faithful to a family party, is not in a position to preach decency in democracy!

BTW Who is this Bengali from Sandeshvalli (representative of what’s going on in Bengal in the name of Democracy)? Never heard of him or seen him before - give introductions / biographies before starting so people can establish “qualifications” of speakers? Couldn’t even wait till the end - first few minutes of this program was enough.

    Elections are only one indicator.
Compliance with constitutional values; respect for Rule of Law, and Institutions, which need to work sincerely and fairly for all the diverse communities and ethnic identities without bias or prejudices.
If politicians are elected because of their appeal to religious vote banks ftom majority community. Then is that democracy or majoritarianism?
And if the minorities are abused, stigmatized and targets of hate speech, then the country has gone over the brink into majoritarianism.
And if people still call themselves democracy, those people need education.
Indian concept of democracy? What are Indian traditions of electoral democracy, and when was it practised⁹?

@shashitharoor - by what mechanism should the people keep their elected member accountable in between elections? Anyhow, monitoring accountability is a fulltime effort, which the citizen that is consumed with living and providing for themselves and their family does not have the luxury of time to spare. The first responsibility of accountability starts with ethical party leadership, and then by watchdog institutions such as legal fraternity, judiciary, civil service, journalists that are not partisan. Lastly, put aside all the pontication, and rush to claim relevance even when not seen to be relevant, and talk about well thought out action plans that inspire confidence and energy.
