This debate is enlightening. As a human being, horrified by what's happening in Gaza and what Palestinians have been subjected to for decades, I'm encouraged to see someone as well spoken with structured, factual arguments as Mehdi Hassan. And I'm deeply disturbed by Eylon's unfounded claims and complete lack of empathy for the destruction and the civilian loss. I saw a lot of comments frustrated with the moderator, but I actually think he did a good job. There are few topics that can get more heated than this, and I think he was able to pose good questions and add new layers to what each person was saying. I'm leaving this comment here because I think it's important that we don't turn these debates into "football matches", that we listen closely and with curiosity so that with the people we're close to we can have informed and constructive discussion with the hope to reach a common ground, finding our shared humanity, pushing political leaders for diplomatic solutions instead of waging war.

To you Arab whiners. everything is Israel's fault, this is why you remain such losers while Israel is modern, secular and successful. Israel left Gaza in 2005 with a functioning instrastructure, and thriving businesses and the people of Gaza, fed up with the corruption of the Palestinian Authority, elected Hamas, a terrorist organization to govern them - what could go wrong? Then, predictably, they neglected the instracture, expected Israel to provide it all, spent all their donations to buy and smuggle in weapons and build a tunnel system bigger than the London underground, all with their one objective in mind: destroy/harm Israel. Did Hamas attempt to do what is right and best for the people of Gaza? The question itself is laughable. After breaking the peace pact on 10/7/23 knowing that Israel would retaliate, thus making Gazans vulnerable to Israel's military, did Hamas invite Gazans into the tunnels for safety? Hell no. It wanted Israel to kill as many of them as they would so that Hamas could go on a propaganda mission and whine about civilian deaths - even thought HAMAS ALONE is responsible for every death in Gaza. Before 1917, the Palestinian Territories were inhibited mainly by three groups: Christians, Jews and Muslims who were all living together in some considerable peace compared to today. 1917 Balfour declaration however gave the JEWS ONLY the right to a RELIGIOUS STATE on Palestinian Territories. And do you know what does a RELIGIOUS STATE exactly mean!!? It means for everyone belonging to that religion gets the right to a citizenship of that state even if they weren't born within that state. That's when Jews- including very baaad people, you name it- started flowing in masses from all over the world and barbarically settle and spread on Palestinian lands. Indigenous Palestinian (almost non-Jewish) communities normally started resisting and some western governments unfortunately sided with the new unfair order. By the way, Britain was occupying the Palestinian Territories back then when giving that promise to the Jews (occupant giving what they don't own). Since then, Jews have been flowing, settling and spreading, and Palestinians have been resisting. And that's how this whole misery started after Jews, Christians and Muslims were living together in some considerable peace on the Palestinian Territories.
Leftists think that the majority of Palestinians are a bunch of hippies If only they would be left to their own devices. It's bullshit. Hamas is the elected government. They share huge majority support among the Palestinians. This idea that Hamas is just 5 guys in a garage who have all the Palestinians under their thumb is ridiculous. It's not an accident that there isn't a single Arab democracy besides Israel. It isn't an accident that there is no Middle Eastern country that treats women as equals to men.
@@jeffgojailthis is a very dumb comment. Palestine hasn't had an election since 2006, when a majority of currently alive Palestinians were children. It is ridiculous to assume that Hamas represents the views of all Palestinians. As for Hamas having a lot of support from Palestine, this is also not surprising. As is the case when people are oppressed and under threat of death or displacement (as Palestinians in gaza are and have been since before Oct 7), any resistance movement, no matter their views, becomes favorable. This is the case with Hamas. This was the case with Bush post 9/11. This is the case with Bibi post oct 7. This is the case with Hezbollah after the recent Israeli strikes in Beirut. Now when it comes to there not being any thriving democracy in the middle east, much of that can be attributed to proxy wars and goverments and political instability caused by US and UK's involvement in the gulf. The only truly regressive Islamic states are Saudi Arabia and UAE, and those are allies of Israel in this conflict. Speaking of allies, Bibi has been caught sending bags of money to Hamas over the years, to bolster them and to undermine the other major political party in Palestine, which is much less militant and liberal. It is obvious that Bibi wants to undermine efforts of democracy in Palestine and continue having Hamas in power so he can continue his "righteous war".
@common_undead They had a chance to have a country that was 95% Arab and in Israel that was 55% Jewish and they turned it down because they'd rather go to war for 40 years then share the land they stole from the Jews with them. I'm so sick and tired of people like you just making excuse after excuse for these horrible people. You know what I think is racist? Not giving Palestinians any agency whatsoever. It doesn't matter if half the population didn't elect hamas. Way more than half the population supports them. In the West Bank they have 90% supports which is why a boss suspended elections there because Hamas would win and probably kill Fattah

@SCHEY101 Yeah, there little historical evidence to support this. The Diaspora, if that is what you are referring to, is far more attributed to the invasion of the Babylonians in 597 BCE and 586 BCE. Then later the Romans with the sacking of the 2nd Temple in 70 CE. But, in both cases, there is little in the way of historical evidence to support mass migrations during those periods thus far. Especially on the Roman side, which never had a history of mass displacement of conquered peoples. Either in the form of evidence of the migrations themselves (as mass human movements do leave evidence), or of displacement settlements you'd normally see surrounding evacuated territories during such events. It truly is just Historical acceptance of Religious Scripture that supports the Jewish peoples being "kicked out" of the region. While its far more likely the the diaspora of segments of the Jewish populous happened gradually, over the course of several hundred years. Especially under Roman and Byzantine Occupation. This issue is further complicated by the fact that there is no historical evidence to support the Exodus either. Especially given, as its estimated to have happened around the 1300s BCE (had it occurred), the levant was under occupation of the still very powerful Egyptian Empire. Which means that Moses would have spent 40 years ... moving several million people from Egypt ... to Egypt? While leaving no evidence of such mass migrations in the territory; or Egyptian records. Instead, the likelihood (especially given that Yahweh is the name of one of the Minor Canaanite Gods), the Jewish peoples came from the Canaanite populations local to the region is pretty high. Which creates a problem, given the Palestinian peoples can also trace ancestry back to that same group. Though, in both cases, there is a lot of ethnic interbreeding by this point. Even some of Israel's own founders (David Be Gurion and Yitzhak Ben-Zvi) recognized this, if their supposed study "The Land of Israel in the past and present"(1918) can be believed. "The Fellahin (Palestinian Farmers) are not the descendants of the Arab conquerors. Who captured Israel and Syria in the 7th Century CE. The Arab victors did not destroy the agricultural population they found in the country. They expelled only the alien Byzantine rulers, and did not touch the local populations. Nor did the Arabs go in for Settlement. Even in their former habitations, the Arabians did not engage in farming. They did not seek new lands in which to settle their peasantry, which hardly existed. Their whole interest in the new countries was political, religious, and material: to rule, to propagate Islam and collect taxes. Further, despite the oppression and occupation, the rural population remained unchanged". In essence, the Palestinians can find their ancestry in many ways to the populations that simply remained in those repeatedly conquered territories. Converting to both Christianity and Islam over generations. They didnt steal shit. By the very same "Blood and Soil" argument, its their land too. They just descend from those that stayed, over those that left.

"They are not your neighbors. They are people you've occupied. "

Its a lie
Palestinians lived there all the time
@SCHEY101
@@cardbutton892 A lot of words to say there is no evidence either way. One thing is certain though, anyone who thinks that Israelis should face genocide because they are different to their neighbors needs to think again.
