- In the year since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the question of proportionality in response to October 7th has taken center stage. Both sides have reported high death tolls, the risk of famine and disease is growing, over a hundred hostages of various nationalities remain in Gaza, and ceasefire proposals are ongoing with no end in sight. Those who support Israel’s response argue that Israel has the right to defend itself like any country under attack; it needs to do all it can to bring the hostages home and prevent Hamas from posing any future threat. However, critics of Israel’s response contend that it has led to a humanitarian crisis, failed to protect Palestinian civilians, and jeopardized long-term peace in the Middle East.
With this critical background, we debate the question: Were Israel’s Actions in the Gaza War Justified?

Israel is the only one that's been open to accepting two-state solutions in the past, while the surrounding Arab states have not only goaded Palestinians into not accepting them but waged wars on Israel that they almost always end up losing. You can argue whether the resolutions were fair to both sides, but some land (1948 resolution was probably slightly more in favor of Israel) would be better than being in a persistent state of war.
The discussion in this war is absurd. First.
Israel acted selflessly to live in peace with the Palestinians in Gaza. It was more than a decade ago when Israel itself relocated thousands of individuals living in Gaza with lethal force from their homes to follow the agreement, which obligated the Palestinians in return to stop any kind of aggression towards Israel. The Palestinians had the chance to build a safe, functional, and prosperous livelihood. But the first thing the Palestinians did in return was to elect a government that enshrined the goal of destroying Israel in their constitution. The elected government followed through with its promise. Since its founding, thousands of rockets have flown into Israel. Dozens of civilians died in terrorist attacks. Millions of aid funds - intended for civilian purpose - were misused to build rockets, tunnels, and other nonsense. The crimes committed on October 7th like raping women, killing children, or kidnapping a baby, was Humus has been doing for years. Secondly. Israel behaved more humanely in this conflict than any other conceivable party in any imaginable conflict. It allowed Palestinians to work in Israel, receive medical care or even migrate into their country. During war, they warn civilians where their military is operating. They admit collateral damage and apologize for it. They saved Sinwar’s life giving him a lethal brain surgery. They treated the daughter of Haniyyas daughter for her complex disease in Israel. While Humus was building rockets and tunnels with all the foreign aid, Israel supplied their civilians with free water and electricity. The situation is clear. In no other conflict the responsibility for the suffering has been so one sided and clear - in no other conflict have the perpetrators been held accountable so weakly. The same goes for any related conflict: Hezbollah, Houthis, etc…the more peacefully you try to live with them, the more visible their genocidal intents becomes.
People with voice and power who claim to reject war have the duty to unequivocally name the culprit of this war and do everything in their power to eliminate them. Everything else is responsibility for the resulting suffering and will extend it.
Israel is so hungry for land that:
1. 1979: The Camp David Accords
Israel agreed to return the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt as part of the peace treaty signed with Egypt.
2. 1994: Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty
Although this treaty did not involve significant land transfers, Israel agreed to return small portions of land to Jordan, particularly in areas that were previously occupied.
3. 1993-1995: Oslo Accords (I and II)
The Oslo Accords were agreements between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) that laid the groundwork for the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state. Israel agreed to transfer control over certain parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Authority.
4. 2005: Gaza Disengagement Plan
Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, dismantling settlements and military presence in the area. The land was handed over to Palestinian control.

The 2nd question is easy to answer because it's borne off an ideology that is obviously malicious and immoral by a practically nearly universal consensus. But war in general is not always unjustified; the World Wars, Civil War, etc. helped eliminate ideologies that would've been harmful to the world if allowed to exist. Similarly, Israel wanting to eliminate Hamas most would agree is not a bad intention. Better question is how many civilian casualties relative to militant casualties are too much? And I think that's where the biggest disagreement is. A war with zero civilian casualties would be ideal but not realistic; meanwhile, WWII saw several German and Japanese cities indiscriminately bombed, civilian and militant alike. Israel is probably somewhere in between, I don't know where. Similarly, every large enough war intrinsically will have war crimes from both sides; there's probably plenty of warcrimes committed by individual Allied soldiers on the Axis civilians. Question is how much is too much? I don't know the answer to this either. This debate would have been far more informative if they focused on the big picture, ideally with data and sources for that data and each one arguing about merits of theirs and opponent's sources.
@@rutvin8763 while no one knows the exact civilian death toll, I think we can be sure that it was much lower than Hiroshima both in absolute terms but also proportional to the number of combatants killed. Some estimates put this around 1 to 1 in Gaza, and obviously much worse in Hiroshima and Nagasaki

But if you're going to allow proven liars onto your stage to debate and then scold the panelists when they point out that fact, it just feels a little hypocritical. If the goal is to get to the truth of the issue, ad hominem attacks should be addressed as ad hominem attacks, not virtue signaled from the podium, in my opinion.
