- Take your first steps in learning how to employ the RDI radar in the Mirage 2000C, looking closely at the basics of beyond visual range search and acquisition. Recap the elementary principles of a pulse-doppler radar and develop an understanding of the Mirage's RECH, PSID and PSIC modes (Range while search, Track while Scan, Single target track).
This tutorial takes place on the Marianas map in DCS World.
Reiver uses the English variant of the Mirage 2000C cockpit, because he is an uneducated barbarian.
Reiver is not a hardcore milsim-er - he just likes playing the game well - if you're looking for something more authentic, please consult the flight manual.

The DCS Mirage-2000C is one of my favorites. I’m currently focusing most of my DCS time on the DCS Mirage-F1 and hope you consider doing “The Art of” on this beautiful module as well. Cheers.

12:02 - The Ang - Alt switch (S - Z in French cockpit) is not just altitude display format at alidade position, it changes antenna elevation control mode. In "Ang" (S) you control antenna elevation directly: pressing elevation control switch changes antenna angle and VTB shows two numbers of altitude range that is being scanned at current alidade position (for example, if you move it closer the altitude window will change to a narrower one and you may need to adjust elevation to scan at previous altitude range). In "Alt" (Z) mode you use elevation control switch to set altitude at alidade position and antenna will tilt automatically such that the beam will be centered at selected altitude at any alidade range (for example, if you move cursor closer, scan center altitude will remain the same and antenna will tilt automatically to maintain the beam centered at that altitude). S mode is still more versatile, but Z mode has it's applications too.

A little comment about commanding a lock : it's possible to lock into PSIC (STT) directly. If you use the STT/TWS toggle command while in RWS, on the bottom right, "PID" will toggle to "PIC" and back. This indicator tells you in which mode you will command a lock with TDC depress, and is memorized.
So, instead of locking to TWS, and then convert track to STT, you can press the toggle button while still in RWS to show "PIC" and command the lock afterwards.

I picked up this plane on sale yesterday and it's been a bit of a steep learning curve - even for DCS. I love the plane so far! Definitely one of my favorites to fly. It's modern, but not modern like the F-teens or the JF-17. You still have to operate everything in analog-adjacent ways. It's not going to hold your hand for you and compute everything so you can launch a fox-3 and turn cold.
The cold war planes are where it's at, hands-down. The mig 15, 19 (my favorite), and 21 are super fun to fly but sometimes lack some capabilities I enjoy. I own the F-5 but I'm not super into it yet. It hasn't grabbed me like the Mirage has.
Anyway, thank you for your hard work putting these tutorials together. You're a life saver and you got a subscriber!

Have you thought about doing a video on what you have bound to your hotas and where? I think I have a decent setup for mine so far but I'm still trying to refine it. I watched the Grim Reapers' video on it but didn't quite like some of his bindings.
It would be great to see how you have yours set up, and the equipment you're using, too.
I'm seriously floored with the quality of these videos and the explanations in them. Reading through the flight manuals is helpful, but seeing things in action is far better for me to learn from.

I've thought about doing a bindings video. If you watch my Pilot's Briefing video for the Mirage F1, I explain that I didn't want to do it as I think each pilot should get a feel for the aircraft and develop a bindings layout for themselves that works for them...and then after much harassment I included one anyway :D

I briefly loaded the F1 cockpit familiarization video before it clicked why the cockpit looked so foreign a few seconds later and I went back to one of the 2000 videos.

I recommend to have PID over PIC because PIC can warn the other aircraft through their RWR that you are tracking them. If you fire a missile, it will automatically transfer to PIC to for the missile guidance. This also makes you have more situational awareness as you are still scanning the air. The only time I will use PIC other than missile guidance, is for the Non-cooperative recognition system, which cannot be done in PID.
The briefing always feels like an ace combat briefing.

Thanks to your video I might give the Mirage a shot in the future. I've always avoided non-american made jets in the past due do the different philosophies in cockpit and avionics design. And I've even learned something new about pulse doppler radars.
You should definitely givethe Mirage 2000C a try. I used to hate it but then fell in love with it.

very good but you forgot to explain the "Rej" that turn off the MBC filter, this is sometimes very useful to keep a target what is notching

Well done, can I assume while in TWS, it automatically switches to STT when missile launch ? Why would someone not use broadcast iff mode 4 all the time ?

That's correct. When in PSID TWS, pulling the trigger will switch the lock to PSIC STT prior to releasing a Super 530D. It takes a brief moment longer to loose off the missile. More detail is given in the tutorial on the Super 530D itself.👍

Coming back to this one. Issue im having is after I have locked and shot down a target the altitude doesnt switch back to the 0-26k ft sweep or a positive altitude sweep. It does a -400 to -700 etc. It is only showing a negative sweep if that makes sense. Im not sure how to get it out of this mode. I guess im having an issue with the radar elevation.
Yes, that's typical.
As your Super 530D approaches the target, the target's first inclination will probably be to dive. The radar in PSIC will track this and tilt downwards. After the target is destroyed the radar will continue to track the debris for a short while, by which time you will likely be flying over it and the radar will have a severe downward tilt if left unchecked.
Once you are sure your missile has connected and the target has been destroyed, press Weapons System Command Depress to unlock the debris and manually readjust the radar elevation to the centre using the usual controls (it does not automatically return to the boresight elevation as it does in some aircraft). Use the scale on the left of the VTB to see how the radar is tilted vertically.

In the main DCS Settings menu, under the Special Tab, select the Mirage 2000C and the option is under there. 👍

Hey is the Mirage’s radar tilt on an axis? I swear i cannot find it. Whats it called?
The tilting of the radar antenna elevation is not, you need to bind two buttons for up and down.

@TazziedoesWT When I first started learning the Mirage, I also came from the F-16. Took a while to get used to it not being on the wheel I normally place it on on my hotas.

My radar keeps showing sil. I'm not sure how to get it off of this mode.
Okay, some preliminary checks to diagnose the problem...
First, check that the radar power knob on the left console is set to emit, then check to see if you have PCM mode set on your radar jammer - if you do, switch to radar-priority mode on the jammer or disable the system.

Unfortunately Mig-29, Su-27 have range advantage in BVR compared to Mirage 2000C and this is not fun at all flying Mirage on DCS multiplayer servers.
It can certainly be a challenge but I disagree that it isn't fun! There are some great Cold War-themed servers where, due to weapon limitations, a Mirage 2000C can easily get the better of a Fulcrum.
@@reiver1-1 You right, Mirage 2000C just isn't for me. Waiting for F4 E Phantom now as I want to master it as much I am able to fly on Cold War serwers and shoot down mig 17s, 19s and 21s. That will be cool.
When I first got the Mirage, I hated it but now it's one or my favourite airframes.
Looking forward to the Phantom also. A great success story of adaptability and longevity.
