Why You Shouldn't Give Water to Your Baby

  • When can babies drink water? Humans need water to survive, but did you know that babies under 6 months don’t ever need to drink a drop of it? Babies' inner workings are quite different to an adult’s, which means they can’t eat and drink the same things grown-ups do. Even a couple of ounces of water can pose major health problems!
According to the World Health Organization, babies should be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of their life. If they can’t be breastfed, formula will suffice. Even in the hottest months of the year, babies can remain hydrated from their daily breast milk or formula intake. So how much harm can water do to a baby’s insides? A lot!

    SUMMARY:
    - Surprisingly enough, the answer is no. Unlike adults, babies are comprised of approximately 75% water. Babies simply don’t need water in the same way young children and adults do. Babies remain healthily hydrated thanks to a regular intake of breast milk or formula.
    - Water can fill up a baby’s tummy, which can make it difficult for them to absorb the right amount of nutrition they need from their breast milk or formula.
Too much water in babies’ small bellies can fill them up and will spoil their appetite for the milk or formula they desperately need for healthy growth.
    - If you use too much water in your formula mixture or in general, you risk giving your baby “water intoxication,” which can prove to be very dangerous.
    - Watering down formula unnecessarily can screw up a baby’s electrolyte balance. This imbalance can cause major complications like seizures.
    - Giving water to babies doesn’t only interfere with their ability to absorb nutrients. It also does major harm to their organs.
    - A baby under 6 months old doesn’t have a fully developed filtration system in their body. This inability to filter water can literally intoxicate the baby, affecting their overall growth and development.
    - Just like you do with solid food, you need to incorporate water gradually into their diets along with breast milk and formula.
    - Since you can only give them a tiny bit of water at a time in the very beginning, try giving them just a taste of water on a spoon. This will give them a chance to experience the stuff!
    - According to the United States Department of Agriculture, toddlers typically need around 1.3 liters of water a day, which includes water found in milk, juice, and other foods.

I held a little baby a few hours ago and your video is ridiculous. There are so many things that are wrong or not properly explained.
First off, you're right, breastfed babies do not need water at all.
Up until 4 months, it is not DANGEROUS ... it needs to be boiled. It is put in formula and you can (and should) give water on small doses if you feed your baby with formula and that it's hot outside. After 4 months a lot of parents start to give sippy cups of water to their babies in small amounts and it's perfectly fine.

We're you told to give an entire bottle? No right? That's what people don't get. You are only allowed to give no more than 2 oz per day. Babies under 6 months can easily get water poison. Too much water in the formula can also dilute the mixture preventing them from fully absorbing the nutrients. That's why it's very important to follow the instructions. If your baby is constipated change the formula. The child's stomach probably can't handle it or switch to a gentle version.

Apple juice is amazing when they have hard stool it softens it and makes them poop easier but on the flip side if you give them too much they have an ungodly mess that you can't even begin to describe how you cleaned it up but you did cause you're Mom/Dad

This is so untrue it’s hilarious! Their info is all wrong! The only thing they’ve said so far that is true is that you shouldn’t water down their formula. I worked in the newborn nursery and NICU during my nursing career as well as having two children of my own and we gave them water!

Yea my mom said she gave all of us (4) water, only at night after the last feed, if we were fussy, and we were def under 6 months when she started.

    • @amandahernandez688
      @amandahernandez688 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@narie__b4799 um…you realize what your mother did was purposely starve you and try to trick your infant bodies by bloating/filling you full of useless, nutrition-less filler water, so you couldn’t have the same proper stomach-brain function that’d allow you to understand necessary hunger & cues, and therefore be more submissive to and allow HER to sleep through the night, right?
(Literally what anorectics do. Or anyone trying to fill up on watery, nutrition-less lettuce in dinner salads.)
Not something anyone should feel “SuperMom/SuperBaby” type pride from or brag about. And I can already hear the survivors bias/“well her mom’s mom’s mom’s…” argument making it okay…and/or the stories of rice cereal bottles to knock out the naps too 🙄
