When I was a little girl, my mama worked as a waitress at a diner/lunch counter in downtown Cincinnati, OH. She ate a piece of this pie with her lunch one day and went bonkers. The nice Jewish lady that she worked for scribbled down the recipe and I have it to this day. It truly is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
Pie Baking Tip: If you want to use aluminum foil to prevent the crust from overbrowning, just take a piece of foil, cover the pie entirely and secure it over the edges. Then take scissors and cut the foil in a circle around the inside edge. It stays on so much better than using strips! Uses less foil than making strips and you can just throw it away after -- one less item to clean. 😊
I was so thankful to see that you had put this recipe on TH-cam. I was the clinic nurse for the chief of medicine at Vanderbilt medical center before I retired. We had a nurse that lived in Kentucky and drove to Vanderbilt to work in our clinic. Every year when it was time for Kentucky Derby she would bring a bunch of Derby pies and let me tell you they went as fast as we could inhale them. They are wonderful and I’ve always wished that I would have written that recipe down and now I have it thanks to you. 😊

My mom was given this recipe and made it for the family on Derby Day circa 1978. It was such a treat, we made it over and over again. It is a big hit still after all these years when it's made and shared with friends. I know the recipe by heart I've been asked for it so many times.
I worked in a restaurant in Illinois back in the 80's and we had a pie almost identical to this but it had bourbon in it as well. We'd serve it with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream and hot fudge. It was great!
Thanks for this. Originally the pie fell into the classification of "Chess Pie" known as a very sweet pie that was offered up to travelers in the Kentucky area. Variations include rum soaked raisins instead of the chocolate pieces and also a meringue topping. Always a delight !
Cathie I see no reason why you couldn't exchange the sugars. Today's taste for sugar is nothing like it was years ago. I actually had to cut back on the sugar a bit for my taste. You'll find that this pie will be a favorite ! Should also mention that you can vary the nuts as well. @@cathiestarnes4812

I liked that you shared the flour on the nuts and chips but I also liked that you measured with the pie server for people who are new to serving up a good pie.Thank you Melissa good camera work. To your chef!
My husband and I lived in Louisville for 20 years and were never able to attend the Derby. BUT I have made several different variations of Derby pie. This one is hands down the best! We just, in the last 3 months moved to Tennessee and I now have been on the hunt for the best Derby pie! Woohoo!!!🎉🎉🎉 Hands down THE best one! Thank you!!!😊
My mother has made this pie, using an identical recipe, at Thanksgiving for at least 30 years. I started making it myself this year and have used brown sugar instead of white sugar. It's so good.
I know this is an oxymoron, but such simple decadence like this is truly a thing of beauty. I will try this recipe soon. What a wonderful dessert to have whether it's after a sunny day at the Derby or on a rainy day after a comforting meal. Thank you so much! I am saving this to my "Yum" folder so I can watch it again and bake one along with y'all! 😃😃😃
Love how you show all the ingredients and measurements. I also like watching how you make the filling. I’m left handed and am a visual person. You make easier by showing each step to make the pie. Thank you!

These two are a darling couple and I’ve enjoyed watching them so much. My youngest sister and her husband died 😢 just few months ago from a horrible accident. I’ve been amazed how much their simple and fun cooking has lifted my spirits. ❤. Thank you…thank you for all the goodness you share. Bless you both. 🙏😎🤗
I loved how you shared this recipe! I’m a baker, and I never heard of Kentucky Derby Pie before! This looks like a keeper and I can’t wait to make it for my family and friends. It looked so caramelized, it reminded me of a Pecan Pie which we love. Thank you so much and I loved how you wasted nothing. You did a great job!

Woo hoo,I had been wanting this recipe for years. Thank you so much. I used to get a slice of this pie at a restaurant when they had it. Its a yummy pie.❤
Thanks for sharing this recipe. I tried it out and my husband, quite the pie connoisseur, said that Kentucky Derby pie is now his second favorite pie. Nothing but cherry will be in first place. Ever. But we all enjoyed this recipe immensely. Thanks again.
I'm from Louisville Kentucky, now living in Florida and I'm going to make this for my future in laws (From NY) for Thanksgiving, with down home pride!! Thanks guys!! 😁
All I needed to hear was you have been making this pie for 40 years and I was sold. I love Kentucky, my first duty station was at Fort Knox and consider it my second home. I appreciate this recipe and can't wait to make this at home! So glad I found this channel and can't wait to see what else you guys share. Have a blessed day!
A Derby Pie is one of my favs, too. But I have always used a recipe that includes corn syrup & then the other ingredients minus the flour. However, if it is baked too long it can be hard (pecans like candy). I am really excited to try your recipe, you made it SO easily & it looks DELICIOUS! Thank you!
Wow, I'm so glad I found your channel! My husband actually found you and showed me. We love how you explain everything and lay all your ingredients out. I'm going to make this pie tomorrow! I've checked out all of your recipes and have to say, I've going to try and make them all. Thank you so much!
I love KY Derby Pie. I’ve made it since the late 70’s. One difference though, the way I’ve been told, is the pie you made is a DERBY PIE, to be a KENTUCKY DERBY PIE, you soak the pecans in one half cup of good Kentucky Bourbon. Either way it’s a great pie, and I’ve made it both ways. Being from KY & the Bible Belt, you don’t want to take the one with bourbon to a Baptist Church Social……….love that you are from Mt. Sterling, I’m from Ashland.
30 years ago a coworker brought this pie to a party and I absolutely fell in love with it. He share the recipe with me then, but I lost it. Thanks for sharing this. Definitely making it soon. 😊😍

I look forward to spending more time in your kitchen. Greetings from East Tennessee...
You both are so sweet!! Thanks for inviting us into your lovely kitchen. I cannot wait to try this recipe. Pecan pie is my favorite and adding chocolate chips is the icing on the cake. No wait the cherry on top. 😊 😉 May God bless and keep you both!! 🙏
Baking is one of my favorite things to do and pies especially. But I learned something from this video. I didn’t know that coating the nuts and chips with flour can help keep them from sinking. Thank you! In one of my previous comments I said you must be an engineer or a teacher. Now I know I was right. You are a teacher! I appreciate the slow, calm way you explain every step. You explain when precision is necessary and when it isn’t. ThSt is helpful! And all your recipes are so yummy looking. This one looks like I really need to try it!
We hope you enjoy it! And yes, Tom was a fifth grade teacher for most of his career. He was a great teacher and his classroom skills shine through in the kitchen as well. Thank you so much for your encouraging comments We really appreciate it.

Thank you for this recipe, I have been trying to find these in the stores around Derby time. I almost ordered them, but seeing this video just saved me a lot of money❤

Nice to meet you! As a West Coast Gal, this pie is new to me, but since it's made with all good stuff, I'm sure it's undoubtedly delicious! I was pleasantly surprised how it rose in the crust and didn't at all look like you should have added another 50%! Although my cooking for our family excludes white flour and white sugar, Ive learned to find alternatives. I'll look forward to seeing what other deliciousness us served at your table... or counter!!! Thanks for the invite! Stay safe, Be blessed, Give thanks!

Thank you for another great recipe. As an Australian, I have not heard of this pie before and am glad you described it in such detail. I shall try it soon!
Ok I had to improvise here in California .Instead of Vanilla extract,I used almond extract .Instead of dark chocolate I used white plus I added dried cranberries and sweetened condensed milk with my margarine brown sugar and finally walnuts instead of Pecans . OMG its amazing . I call it "Hollywood Park pie" from California inspired by Your Kentucky Derby Pie.Tomorrow Ill check in when I can get to the store that has all the original ingredients .Taste test competition tomorrow .Thank you two !!!!! From California .
How much sw cond milk?
Oh my! This is my first visit to your channel, and what a visit it was. I MUST make this pie immediately! Thanks for sharing the recipe! By the way, I thought the crimping job you did on the crust was lovely. ☺️
Woo hoo,I had been wanting this recipe for years. Thank you so much. I used to get a slice of this pie at a restaurant when they had it. Its a yummy pie.❤
We agree! It really is a delicious pie. Thank you very much for watching our video.
You guys are so sweet together! Its so nice to see especially in this day and age! Love the recipes! Thank you for taking the time to share with us!❤️
Your pie crimping looks just fine. The filling filled up the deep dish pie pan perfectly.
Thanks for sharing this recipe. I tried it out and my husband, quite the pie connoisseur, said that Kentucky Derby pie is now his second favorite pie. Nothing but cherry will be in first place. Ever. But we all enjoyed this recipe immensely. Thanks again.
Thank you for sharing your Derby Pie recipe. It looks easy to make and so delicious. I can’t wait to make it and share it with my family.
The pie looks amazing!!! Thank you for the video and the recipe ❤
This looks so good! Love the way you lay out and show all the ingredients before starting to cook. By the way,bet you were a great teacher!
I'm from Louisville Kentucky, now living in Florida and I'm going to make this for my future in laws (From NY) for Thanksgiving, with down home pride!! Thanks guys!! 😁
That looks so good. Will make it soon❤
I never had a pie like this. I love trying new things, and this looks like it would be easy enough for me to make. TYSM.
This pie looks amazing! Can’t wait to try this. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
That looks so yummy, like a chocolate chip cookie in a pie! I can't wait to try this!
I thought that too! For all of us who love snitching a spoonful of cookie dough, this is a must!
I made this pie in the 80's from a recipe that I got from the Courier Journal. It was so rich and yummy. You guys do a great job
Welcome home! We love having you at our table. We have many videos so we hope you find some more recipes to enjoy!
It looks scrumptious! God bless you for sharing your baking secrets.
Thank you so much for watching. Hope you can enjoy this pie soon.
I think you did an awesome job fluting the edge of your pie crust. I think it's beautiful!
Thanks so much! 😊 We appreciate the nice comment!
I think he did a good job too, it looked great!!
Tom must be a perfectionist because that pie crust was "gorge"ous! 😍
I love how down to earth you are! Now I don't feel bad about using my fingers to scrape the mixing blades. 😊
Yes! Every smidgeon!😂
This has got to be one of the best cooking videos I have ever watched. I stumbled across youtube tonight and straight into your kitchen! What an awesome surprise! I have to tell you, my mouth watered while watching you taste that pie at the end. Haha! What a simple recipe but Oh so good, I'm sure! Thank you both for sharing. I look forward to spending more time in your kitchen. Greetings from East Tennessee...
I love that you gave your wife the 1st bite. That's love ❤️
Love how you put your ingredients all in a row. Looks delicious.
You both are so sweet!! Thanks for inviting us into your lovely kitchen. I cannot wait to try this recipe. Pecan pie is my favorite and adding chocolate chips is the icing on the cake. No wait the cherry on top. 😊 😉 May God bless and keep you both!! 🙏
I have never heard of this pie before but it looks super good and I just have to make this 😊 Thank you Tom and Melissa for sharing ❤❤
I can't wait to try this pie. Your directions are so complete and I'll bet you were a great teacher!
Ingredients great makes me anticipate baking &easing first time I've watched you guys
I just pulled this out of the oven. Can’t wait to taste it. Your videos are very well done. I like how you lay out the ingredients and make it simple to understand. We have been enjoying your videos. Thank you!!
Oh my word....my sister fixed this and it was gone in a flash. Love all your videos.
Hey you’ve got plenty of time to restock before the derby on Saturday! 😊Thank you so much for watching!
This is a cool & delicious looking pie, kind of cookie-ish. I love it, thank you. I could eat that entire pie also.
It’s VERY rich! We absolutely love it, though.
I’m thinking vanilla ice cream would also go well with it.
I can't wait to try this pie, it looks so yummy. Thank you for sharing this with us. 💕
I’m guessing you’re from Kentucky. Hello from Indiana!! I’m also a UK fan. 😂
I appreciate your recipe & will use it to make a Kentucky Derby Pie tomorrow. It looks so delicious & I really enjoyed the manner in which you presented your video. Thank You again.
Thank you for this recipe, I have been trying to find these in the stores around Derby time. I almost ordered them, but seeing this video just saved me a lot of money❤
You can definitely make your own cheaper than most places will charge to make it for you. Tip: I love to warm a slice up in the microwave for a few seconds before I eat it. So good! Thanks so much for watching.
Holy Smokes!! I could literally taste this pie. I reminds me of home made chocolate chip cookies without the brown sugar. I always make toll house cookies for our family camping trips but I’m thinking I should surprise everyone with this pie on our next trip. I just subscribed and thank you for sharing!
Yum! That looks positively divine! Y’all have me about to run out to the store late at night for a pie crust!
Looks delicious! Why wait for the Kentucky Derby to make it and eat it? 😂I'm going to try this recipe. Thank you for sharing 👏 👏 2 thumbs up 👍 👍
I just discovered your videos recently, and I have saved almost every one I have seen. I love your choices, and Tom you are so easy to watch and follow. Melissa, I appreciate that you put the recipe in the video. Thank you both. By the way, this pie looks incredible. ❤
This looks so yummy! I am definitely going to make one! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe!💜
It looks like you reached that 3,000 subscriber goal plus some. Congratulations! I have never had a Kentucky Derby pie but it's definitely going to be the next thing I try. It looks DELICIOUS. Thank you so much for sharing! ❤🙏😊
Hello, so over here in Canada we do not have any sort of Derby let alone a Kentucky derby., but you caught my attention with pie! Pie oh my everyone loves pie. My absolute favourite part of your video is when you gave the first bite to your wife. Literally brought tears to my eyes. I loved that!! You two are adorable. I will definitely try your pie it looks delicious. Have a delicious Derby. Lol.
Can't wait to make it
Nice to meet you!
I thought the same thing! The filling rose up really well. It didn’t look scant.
