  • Kentucky Derby Pie
    1/2 cup melted butter
    1 cup sugar
    1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    2 eggs, slightly beaten
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    3/4 cup chopped pecans
    3/4 cup chocolate chips
    1 additional teaspoon all-purpose flour
Mix the first five ingredients in the order given.
Combine the nuts and pecans in a medium bowl with the additional teaspoon of all-purpose flour so the nuts and chips are coated. This prevents them from sinking to the bottom of the pie. Fold this into the first mixture.
Pour into an unbaked 9 inch pie crust.
Bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until browned.
    Cool completely before cutting.
Refrigerate leftovers. When eating later, you might want to warm a slice for a few seconds in the microwave - but not too long, or it will be runny.

Pie Baking Tip: If you want to use aluminum foil to prevent the crust from overbrowning, just take a piece of foil, cover the pie entirely and secure it over the edges. Then take scissors and cut the foil in a circle around the inside edge. It stays on so much better than using strips! Uses less foil than making strips and you can just throw it away after -- one less item to clean. 😊

I was so thankful to see that you had put this recipe on TH-cam. I was the clinic nurse for the chief of medicine at Vanderbilt medical center before I retired. We had a nurse that lived in Kentucky and drove to Vanderbilt to work in our clinic. Every year when it was time for Kentucky Derby she would bring a bunch of Derby pies and let me tell you they went as fast as we could inhale them. They are wonderful and I’ve always wished that I would have written that recipe down and now I have it thanks to you. 😊

When I was a little girl, my mama worked as a waitress at a diner/lunch counter in downtown Cincinnati, OH. She ate a piece of this pie with her lunch one day and went bonkers. The nice Jewish lady that she worked for scribbled down the recipe and I have it to this day. It truly is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

    • @JulianChild
      @JulianChild ปีที่แล้ว

@@randeebecker2455 I go overboard but I filled a quart jug with Maker's Mark and added thirty-four vanilla beans. That is what I call turbo vanilla, you really only need a dozen or so. Let it sit in a cool dark place for about a year, someplace accessible so you can give it a good shake now and then, and you're ready to go. One other note; I do split half my vanilla beans. Keeping the rest whole, after I've used a few tablespoons of this liquid gold, I just top the jar off with more bourbon. This is a perpetual vanilla extract as you will never have to buy another bottle of vanilla again.

Good for you! I have to say I was a bit shocked at the imitation vanilla he used (vastly inferior to the real thing) and I have to say that, yes, I do like the Pillsbury Pie Crusts but if he believes it's better than homemade, I need to take a good look at the recipe he used to use. I love KY Derby Pie. I’ve made it since the late 70’s. One difference though, the way I’ve been told, is the pie you made is a DERBY PIE, to be a KENTUCKY DERBY PIE, you soak the pecans in one half cup of good Kentucky Bourbon. Either way it’s a great pie, and I’ve made it both ways. Being from KY & the Bible Belt, you don’t want to take the one with bourbon to a Baptist Church Social……….love that you are from Mt. Sterling, I’m from Ashland.

I've lived in Texas all my 71yrs and I've made this pie forever!
It's called Chess pie or Buttermilk pie....you can also use a small amount of cornmeal.
We don't use the chocolate chips though and no flour.
Don't know where you live in Texas, but I've never met any old time cooks here that don't know what it is.

A Derby Pie is one of my favs, too. But I have always used a recipe that includes corn syrup & then the other ingredients minus the flour. I was pleasantly surprised how it rose in the crust and didn't at all look like you should have added another 50%! Although my cooking for our family excludes white flour and white sugar, Ive learned to find alternatives. Many years ago long b4 I retired a lady make one, brought it to work & shared it with us, but would not share the recipe. So I made it from taste at first I add a pkg of room temperature cream cheese to my can of condensed milk. It was really good, but whenever I made it at other for one of my coworkers I omitted the cream cheese, cause she didn't like the cream cheese. I have to come back and tell you I made this pie for Derby Day to have with other food while watching the Derby and pre-race festivities. I did add one fourth cup of Kentucky Bourbon in memory of my dad. He lived in Kentucky until he was 16 years old and dearly loved the state and horses. He loved watching the Derby and he enjoyed Kentucky Bourbon from time to time, just one drink. OMG, that pie was so good, I had to eat two pieces! Hubby loved it also and it will be made many times and not just Derby Day. Thank you so much for this recipe, what a winner!.

We are actually going to Bourbon County today to pick up a belt I needlepointed and left with a leathering company. This county is the home of all true Bourbon. We really appreciate your comment. We hope you find a Derby Pie on your table often in the future!
