When I was teaching 3rd grade, one of our science units was "soil." When we had our unit test, I would serve dirt cake to my class. I made it in a large flower pot and put gummy worms on it. The kids loved it!
In the spring, when all the new beach items came out, we would buy little pails and plastic shovels. We just washed them out with soapy water and dried them and used the bucket to hold the sand cake and the shovel to scoop it out to serve.
I make these in cupcake form for my grandchildren. We put gummi worms on the tops to make it look like worms are crawling out of the dirt! They love it!
I use chocolate pudding instead of vanilla pudding I need some Oreo cookies and serve it in a ceramic flower pot and put artificial flowers in it and make it look like a potted plant it tastes yummy
Hey guys, a friend of mine used to bring this to work for us and it was always so delicious, but one time she made it with an off brand oreo and it tasted strange so be sure to always use oreos..it's so cool and refreshing....sometimes it pays to buy the good stuff... thanks for the video...I just finished the one about your adventure at the derby dinner house and lights going out..glad it worked out...
I'm not a sweets person but I really like these quick dessert recipes. Once I get moved I plan on making things like these a couple times a week just to have something sweet on hand. Never know when you're gonna need it
My Aunt made this in a flower pot, the terracotta kind and stuck a fake flower in it, and put it as a centerpiece on our picnic table, at our family reunion. I was looking for my daughter, age 4 and when I found her she was digging in a flower pot on the table. I hadn't heard of dirt cake before so I yelled at her to get out of the dirt. My Aunt and everyone was laughing when they told me it was a Dessert.😂
The dirt cake is great for Halloween. Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies make perfect gravestones. You can write anything you want on them. Those little candy pumpkins are also good for decorating the cake. Ghosts, bats, or any decoration that your family loves would look great on top. I've done this and it was a big hit with everyone.
When my kids were little. My dad and their aunt came to visit. We did a dirt cake only we layered it in new clean plastic flower pot and then wrapped a stem of silk flowers with Saran Wrap or aluminum foil. We sat it on the table just before dinner. My daddy really loved it and made such a fuss over his grandkids feeding him dirty
I love your recipes!! This one looks so good!! in Canada you can buy chocolate wafers and crumbs in a box. If you need the stuff in the middle (for flavour😁) and are using Oreo cookies, without a blender, put the cookies in a zip lock bag, seal and roll a rolling pin over the cookies. Maybe hit them a couple of times! Recipe - box of chocolate wafers, cup of heavy cream. Whip cream. Spread the whipped cream between each wafer, and stick to each other. then cover with the rest of whipped cream. Put in fridge for at least 2 hours. Cut diagonally into slices. Very good and easy on the pocketbook. J
I have been baking, cooking all my life. I am 60 years old now and have never come across this recipe. Thank you. I am going to try it for maybe Labor day, Thanksgiving.
❤can’t wait to try this! You’re blessed to have a husband that cooks! My husband waits for me to make him a cup of cocoa and if I don’t have time he goes without! And don’t ask him to boil an egg!
my husband tried to cook when we were newlyweds because i was ill. he made hamburgers and eggs. the burgers were like hockey pucks, the eggs were grey because his grease burned and the whole house was full of smoke. after that it didn't matter how sick i was i cooked
My recipe calls for leaving the cream in the oreos and blend it up. I layer it in a big terracotta pot and put an imitation sun flower in it, and I use a little garden spade to serve it with.
Oh my, this takes me back. I made dirt cake for my kids. I put gummy worms on it and sticking out of the "dirt". They loved it!! ❤ It truly is a refreshing dessert for summer.
I made this once, using a brand-new, thoroughly washed toy pail, with toy shovels. Yes, gummy worms coming out of the ‘dirt’. Didn’t tell the guests what it was other than ‘“edible ‘dirt’”
OMG! I completely agree with the oatmeal cookie challenge…so disappointing when it happens. Love this recipe. My family use to make it when I was a child. We would use gummy worms, or even put it in a bucket to make it seem more realistic. I’ve seen it made with vanilla Oreos to represent “sand” instead of dirt. Blessings!
I have made this for years and we call it Dirt Pudding. I haven’t used the oreo filling in the filling. Now I have to make it your way! Thanks for sharing! Melissa taking 2 samples is a stamp of approval, too!
Thank you so much for the invitation to Come Sit at Your Table. :) I am loving your recipes, and so appreciate your wonderful wife, for writing out these recipes with each video. I live alone now, having lost my husband 4 years ago, and find that most of these recipes can be halved easily, thank you.👍 Have a wonderful day and enjoy cooking and filming. 💖💖
I make this every year for Thanksgiving. I don't take the filling out just crush all together. I use chocolate pudding and layer in a class bowl. So pretty. So yummy.
That OSCAR is my favorite. I still have mine. I've had it probably 30 years. I love going to second hand stores looking for older kitchen gadgets and I found the larger Oscar for $5.00. Woo-hoo it was my lucky day.
Although I would switch out cool whip for homemade whipped cream, I love the fact that your filling is luscious and rich. It's one of my favorite desserts. Thank you!
You really make me feel as if I am sitting at your table! Thank you for going over each step and also including the recipe written out so it's easy to find
Loved your video. I've made Dirt Cake for my family many, many times and I have ALWAYS left out the butter. It is not necessary. I've also used lowfat milk and it works beautifully. Finally, I have never separated the black and white from the oreos. It will taste the same.
Thank you so much for joining our little channel. We really appreciate it. And you've started with two wonderful recipes I think! We hope you find others of ours that you enjoy as well!
I have never liked eating raisins either. However, through the years, I came across a spice cake recipe that had you plump the raisins before putting them into your cake batter. You plump the raisins by putting the amount of raisins in your recipe into a small pan, then add approximately 1/4-1/3 cup of water to the pan. Place the pan on the stove and let the water come to a boil, turn off the heat and put a lid over the raisins to steep about 30 mins or longer. Then drain those raisins well before adding them to your batter. What a difference that made for me. Today, If I use raisins, they are plumped before I put them in a recipe. I must confess that I used golden raisins in a broccoli salad for Easter. I didn’t plump them, mainly because I had never used golden ones before.. P;is the fact that the salad was made the night before to marinate in a mixture of Mayo, sugar, and Red wine vinegar, and they were just fine. I do enjoy your recipes. Thank you.
Thanks for bringing me a memory. My auntie used to make this for our summer family reunions. So happy to have the recipe. I'm going to make this memory again. ❤❤❤
Omg! I've made dirt cake our church's for 25 years also, I used to put it in a flower pot with fake flowers in the pot, and the kids would get in trouble with their parents bc they thought it was decorations on the table, I would have to take the flowers out to save the kids , love y'all's videos
Put the cookies in a plastic ziplock bag and use a rolling pin works great you can make it like you did with the blinder and we take some melted butter and mix some of the cookie crumbs in it to make the bottom crust
I am binge watching more videos this morning. I haven't made this but I have seen many videos/recipes but I 've never seen anyone remove the icing from the Oreos. I think doing so truly makes it look like dirt. Great tip. Thanks for another great recipe and enjoyable video, Tom & Melissa.
"to get it as fine as you need it to be" without a food processor: go ahead and smash them up real good in a large ziplock bag. When you've got them about as crushed as you think you can do pour the content of the bag into your largest sieve. A lot of what you crushed will go through the sieve, and the remainder will be amenable to being rubbed back and forth across the sieve with a glass jar or some such hygienic blunt object. That will make pretty much all of the remaining oreos/graham crackers/etc. into 'sand-sized powder', so much so that what little is left you can just dump in with the 'sand-sized' cookies and it will be fine.
Hi I made this dirt cake...didn't have oreos so substituted eaglebrand and chocolate baking crumbs.......Totally yummy 😋 thanks for recipe...love your show JaK
Can I give this a THREE THUMBS UP?! Luby’s Restaurant has an Oreo pie and it tastes exactly the same. I’ve been looking for a recipe that matches the taste and this is as close as it gets!
I've made a recipe similar to this & it is delicious!! I've seen other people comment about putting gummy worms in theirs. I have also done that. What is even more fun is to get a new, clean Terra cotta or plastic planter, line it with plastic wrap or parchment paper, & put your Dirt Cake in the planter. We then cleaned some plastic flowers really well & stuck them down in the "dirt." You can add the "worms" if you want. You don't have to eat them, they are just a fun decoration. We have also put dirt cake in a large truffle bowl. Just some fun ideas to add to y'alls!! Thanks for sharing all your recipes & your time with us!!
I made this for my church back in the 80's and put it in a new flower pot with fake flowers and when it came time for the desserts after dinner I started digging into it and you should have seen my pastor's face it was so funny and so he dipped him some and he has loved it every since.
I had that same food processor for 30+ years. It finally gave up last year. I replaced it with a larger one and I'm no so in love lol. Great video! TFS
My cousin always made this . She usually lined a Terra cotta flower pot with plastic wrap . You can always put some faux flowers on the top or some gummy worms . Kids went crazy for it . 🙂😋😍
I’ll Orek eyeing this for the first time. It was actually was in a terra-cotta-flower pot. It too had some gummy worms in it. We all thought it was ingenious. Too only use butter in my home. However, we only buy 2% milk.because that is what my husband likes. While I prefer skim milk. What I use to counteract not using whole milk, when I am using milk in most of my cooking,I use evaporated milk. I will use 1/2 of each or if Im making scrambled eggs, I will use only evaporated. I’ve found that this prevents certain foods, ie scrambled eggs will not become runny as they can when using skim or two percent milk. I dislike the fact that many foods that have milk in them, will turn a bit runny…especially scrambled eggs. 😊
11:44 - This is the inconvenient thing about the KitchenAid mixer... You have to stop the mixer and lift the motor to add certain ingredients. The old Sunbeam mixers with the big bowl in my opinion works much better with much more open space to add ingredients.
Oh my, how refreshing it is to come across this Oreo dirt cake recipe that I used to make many moons 🌙 ago. Now with my old recipe, I can't recall using butter at all. But I would love to try it with a whole stick of butter added. I'm always looking for an excuse to throw butter in any dish 😊. I can also remember using a can of sweetened condensed milk the last time I made it. But I think just only using the powdered sugar would be enough. Thanks. Can't wait to tackle this rich treat again. Grown folks & children alike just went bananas for it.
I am not a fan of original Oreos but I think I will try this with the golden Oreos and maybe call it a “sand” cake. You have opened a new world to me…you make it all seem so easy. I made a version of your fruitcake and it was easy and amazing so this is next. THANK so much.
Thank you for sharing the goodness, Oreos are my favorite so dirt cake definitely makes my mouth water. It’s time consuming so since I don’t own a food processor I’m coming over to sit at your table and you can teach me how to cook and bake, and you can share your story life of how you to meet as husband and wife and while I’m sitting and enjoying the Oreo dirt cake…
Put the cookie part in a gallon zip loc baggie & crush the mess out of them... I've always done it that way! I have a small apartment & no room for extras so... it works!😊❤ I'm definitely adding this to my recipe book for summer vacation at the beach with my family!!😋🍰🏖❤️🙏🏻
That works! My mom had us do it this way at home, I think it was just something to keep my brother and me busy while she was doing other cooking. But we can get the cookies ground up much more finely by putting them in the food processor, faster, and with a lot less effort!
I have made this for the kids classroom parties some 25 years ago:) I made it and also bought a cute hand shovel and served it with it and everyone thought that it was a great to serve it:) Melissa I am also a scrapbooker Card Maker would love to see what your room looks like when you get it all done:) tfs and God bless:)
Sounds like we have lots in common. I've actually moved my scrapbook room twice since we made this video. My scrapbook stuff is now along one wall of our family room. We used to have it for the kids' and their friends' space so it kind of ended up being a logical place for my stuff to land since our kids are now out and on their own. We still have the tv and some furniture out there but it's a space that wasn't used as much until now. Wish we could get together and scrapbook some. It's such a relaxing hobby and so much fun to relieve memories while being creative. I love have scrapbook parties with my friends. Thanks so much for watching our channel. We really appreciate it.
@@comesitatmytable9044 sounds like your family room was a great place for you to end up:) when we lived in our home in San Jose, Calif. I was in our 4th bedroom and it was great now that we lived in a little town called Magalia,Calif. if you heard about the California Camp Fire in Paradise,Calif. we are part of that area. I wish I had others to scrapbook/card make with. If I lived by you I would love to craft with you:) I am really enjoying your channel and I love the way you show how to make the goodies and you always show what it looks like when it’s cooking or mixing the ingredients and that is truly appreciated:) tfs for sharing and God bless:)
I have made with a big brand new washed sand pail with sand shovel for scooping.and gummy worms on top.for get togethers with the grandkids. Sometimes i use blonde sandwich cookies so it looks like the beack and make a beach scene. Fun and yummy😋😋
When I was teaching 3rd grade, one of our science units was "soil." When we had our unit test, I would serve dirt cake to my class. I made it in a large flower pot and put gummy worms on it. The kids loved it!

I love the idea of individual serving dishes for kids. And the worms are a nice touch for kids.

❤ I love how you line the ingredients up, makes it so easy to follow. So sweet how you give the wife the first bite.
I agree with your oatmeal raisin assessment. Especially the biting into a raisin instead of a chocolate chip part 😂
I love the way you lay out the ingredients and explain everything. Really enjoying your videos

Oh yes. And that would really "pretty" it up !

Tom, I used to put my dirt cake in a well scrubbed planter with an artificial plastic flower stuck in the dirt! Also used the gimme worms on top.
I have made this for years and we call it Dirt Pudding. I haven’t used the oreo filling in the filling. Now I have to make it your way! Thanks for sharing! Melissa taking 2 samples is a stamp of approval, too!

I had almost forgotten about Dirt Cake! It was quite popular back in the day! And yes, we liked putting gummy worms down in the dirt! 😁
great video!
Put the cookies in a plastic ziplock bag and use a rolling pin works great you can make it like you did with the blinder and we take some melted butter and mix some of the cookie crumbs in it to make the bottom crust

Супер вкусно 😋😋😋
Yummy.
Absolutely love you all, thank you for sharing all your recipes and your secrets, you all are bomb!!!! ❤
I have an Oscar..I love it..just the right size..it is years old too.
Beautiful. Great job
Yummy
So absolutely delicious !!
Looks Yummy
I love how you said, “ use whole milk 🥛it’s a dessert” lol ❤so true.

Most requested dessert for gatherings in my family.! So good. Never any left. Thank you.❤
I have made this for the kids classroom parties some 25 years ago:) I made it and also bought a cute hand shovel and served it with it and everyone thought that it was a great to serve it:) Melissa I am also a scrapbooker Card Maker would love to see what your room looks like when you get it all done:) tfs and God bless:)
Really enjoying the calm positive vibes of this video :)

You’re welcome! Thanks for watching.
I have made with a big brand new washed sand pail with sand shovel for scooping.and gummy worms on top.for get togethers with the grandkids. Sometimes i use blonde sandwich cookies so it looks like the beack and make a beach scene. Fun and yummy😋😋
