    Seymour is a dark parallel of Yuna. The only difference between them is that Seymour grew up hated and alone while Yuna grew up beloved and with a proper support system from her friends and islanders.

    There's a mistake in the commentary. It claims that "In the case of Yuna, after living for a few years in Bevelle, her mother decided to visit the Al Bhed hoping to reconcile but she was killed by Sin en route. However, in the game, Rin tells Tidus "but when Yuna was born, they (Cid and Yuna's mother) made up again. His sister took off for home at once, but then, her ship..." Therefore the game reveals that, not only had they made up, but that Yuna's mother died shortly after Yuna was born and not a few years later.

    Another good juxtaposition is the fact that Yuna, a half Al-Bhed, was accepted in the Besaid community while Khimari who was a full blooded Ronso was banished from his home due to his broken horn.

    I believe the parallels were purposefully made between the two. But I think the hidden message Really, is to tell the audience that you you can either let negative circumstances define and twist your moral compass, or you can be a better person in spite of the hand you were dealt. Auron said it best. "Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain, or live and fight your sorrow!" I don't believe he only meant this in a literal sense. This quote was too powerful to me when I first heard it, to be taken at face value. In a metaphorical sense, I believe he was drawing that correlation between his fellow rookie guardians when it comes to their own evolution. He's seen this all before. He's the wise man of the group. He's the veteran, and if anyone knows about the cost of vindication, I'd believe it was him.

    The true best villain of FFX

    • @silverknight876
      @silverknight876 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Night's Watch knight True. Main difference being however that Seymour’s motives were much more understandable than Sephiroth’s which I think showcased maturation of the writing for that particular type of character. As much as I love Sephiroth I could never get over the fact that his logic always seemed flawed, like he read the history of Jenova and instantly jumped to the conclusion that he was a God without having all the information. He makes up for it by being a total badass character but still. They didn’t make that mistake with Seymour. They made Seymour LIVE through his fleshed out trauma instead of having it rely solely on the injustices done to someone else.

    • @rondorthecruel124
      @rondorthecruel124 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Silver Knight87 Seymour definitely had a traumatized past which made him a little more of a sympathetic villain. The writers tended to give different villains this depth after FF7, which is cool and a nice change up. I tend to personally prefer just an evil character that I have no desire to feel sorry for (like Sephiroth). I do attribute part of Sephiroth’s strange motives to being closer to Jenova, and some aspect of his perception being more Jenova than his own (to an extent). BUT that is an entirely different discussion lol. I just remember seeing Seymour for the first time with his crazy hair, outfit, weird chest tattoos, tall height, and good looking face and thinking “yep you’re a FF villain” lol

      @@silverknight876no mistakes made Sephiroth is far more complex than that. When he went in the basement he was mistakenly under the belief that jenova was his mother, that she was a cetra, that an anciet catastrophe doomed the cetra civilization and that humanity had abandoned them. He was always superior to every other human and felt disconnected from them. Then he finds out he was lied to his entire life and shinra is creating monsters which causes a psychological break. He believes he is the last of the cetra. When cloud asks him about his sadness he asks what does he have to be sad about since he was chosen to take the planet back for the cetra. The logic is pretty sound. He is apart of a superior race and wants revenge on the inferior beings who are weak, stupid, evil and taking the planet away from its rightful owners. When he later finds out he was not a cetra and created from alien cells etc it doesnt change anything. He is still superior(he survived 5 years in the mako stream not affected by "mako poisoning" aka going crazy from all the voices of the dead people hes hearing and able to not only regenerate but control his clones from the northern crater) and believes superior beings have the right to rule the planet and that humanity is weak and stupid. Also events of Crisis core etc reveal more events that would lead to/support his hatred towards humanity turning him from the worlds greatest hero to the worlds greatest villain. No competition between sephiroth and seymour imo however ff writers (especially ffvii-x) have done amazing complex jobs with their characters that casual/younger gamers sometimes tend to miss since their stories are so incredibly complex and well thought out. Its especially admirable when u realize how fast they pumped these games out in a few years. I first played ff7 as a 7 year old and despite it being my favorite game i misunderstood and missed a lot of complex issues as i replayed the game throughout the years each time i understood and found more complexities in the game as well as ffvii,ix and x. I missed so much of X the 1st playthough XD

      My mom has cancer right now, but she would still fight tooth and nail if anyone she loved was threatened. Perhaps with more abandon than normal even, because she’d need to finish things quickly due to less stamina, and she knows that there’s a good chance in five years she won’t be here, and if taking more risks when given a good opening would secure my safety, yeah, she’d take them. She’s like a bird of prey and a lioness rolled into one.

But for right now, we’re still trying round two to see what we can do. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, as they say.
      I’ll let her know you wished her well; since we moved a few years ago, she’s not really rebuilt a big support system, and it always tickles her to think of someone she doesn’t know being kind enough to take the time to wish her well. We appreciate it. 🌷

    There’s even more parallels between them:
    *Both spent their formative years on islands with Yevon temples
    *He may have had ulterior motives for proposing marriage, but Seymour proposed the idea marriage as a means to bring the people together and Yuna accepted as she wished to bring people hope. Much like how both of their parents got together as a result of attempts to foster a relationship with humans and another group of people.
    *Both we’re willing to die for goals of defeating Sin and freeing Spira from pain even though their plans on achieving these goals differ (Seymour actually did).
    *Both became summoners specifically because of their human parents-both of which would sacrifice themselves and die because of the Final Aeon (in Seymour’s case, it was because his mother became the Final Aeon).

    More appreciation for FFX is always welcome, and I always considered Seymour quite underrated as a dark mirror to Yuna. He's deeply personal in a way that Sin simply can't be, and provides some of the hardest story battles that make you want to kick his crazy ass even more. Heck. it's a battle mechanic that certain party members (Tidus, Wakka, Yuna, Auron, Kimahri) gain big stat boosts when he's angered them, though strangely Rikku never gets an outburst at the guy responsible for destroying her home...

      Its just people trying to be smart.
      There's multiple stories going.
      Tidus is the protagonist however for multiple reasons being: the narrator, the controllable character, the story starts in his "home" world. It revolves around his entire adventure.
      Saying Yuna is the protag because she's the summoner is just blind

    • @fantytowel1279
      @fantytowel1279 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Alex Noa How? Obviously it’s Tidus’ story because he was meant to be the breaker of the cycle not Yuna. If it wasn’t for Tidus, Yuna would just be another throw away summoner, but since we got whiny Tidus, everything worked out how it was planned to be. And you know it’s Tidus’ story because he was an outsider so However way he wanted it to go, it goes his way. He’s the only one who wasn’t born into a world where he was brainwashed into believing certain beliefs thus making him an outsider where only he was able to see certain things that were right from wrong ie. the whole Yu Yevon thing and summoner sacrifice tradition. Jecht takes the credit as mastermind and Auron takes the other half as the one who carried out the duty. All the while Tidus, he just had to keep being himself which made it his story. And on top of that he was the narrator so there’s that.

    • @AlriikRidesAgain
      @AlriikRidesAgain 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Tidus takes control of the story at the end. After all of it being Yuna's story, Tidus takes being the hero away from her and they forge a new path from where Yuna's path was going. So it -was- Yuna's story. Tidus just stole the ending.

      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protagonist
      None of those things makes a protagonist. A protagonist drives the story. They are the ones with most of the agency and make most of the decisions. I cannot think of any major plot event where Tidus is the character using agency. Most of the time it’s Yuna and sometimes Auron.

They all have connections to the Empire, and were in fact raised in the Empire and its military. They were all trained, experimented on, etc. to be tools, powerful magic-using weapons of the Emperor, and thus can all naturally use magic in the game's lore, Kefka grows to find no meaning in life and instead wishes for death and destruction, whereas Terra and Celes both find a purpose for living and for life, as their banter in the final battle explains. Ya, foils are a common literary device. They can often be used to emphasize a central theme or motifs or juxtapose competing ones. FFVII is an example of this where cloud, and really most of the other main characters, accept the loss of their old identity and accept their new ones, but sephiroth doesn’t. Damn I really would love to see or better yet play the What-IF alternate story where Yuna would let Seymour become her Guardian in order of trying to get him to change. Imagine not only Seymour as a permanent party member and the weirdness of having a Guardian that was also an ex-summoner and could still summon Aeons, but also seeing Seymour expressing his desire to become Sin and therefore end up Spoiling the dark secret behind the Final Aeon prior to arriving in Zanarkand. If it happened prior to arriving in Zanarkand, I could totally see Yuna either struggling to decide who to turn into a Final Aeon and Seymour telling her that she needs not worry about that since he would become it for her and then have her still choose not to turn anyone into a Final Aeon when she arrived in Zanarkand.
    .
    Imagine the fight against Seymour that would happen here instead of the several fights that would happen as the story progressed how it had in the game we got. I could see it playing out to where Lady Yunalesca amplifies Seymour's power by augmenting it with some of her own and a fiendesque Seymour summons Anima, Valefor, Ifrit, Shiva, Ixion, & Bahamut all at once similarly to how Yuna summons all the Aeons at once to defeat Sin at the end of FFX how we got it. Not sure if PS2 era hardware could handle that all in battle at the same time (though I guess this What-IF hypothetical alternate game would be on PS4 so it could likely). Now honestly I actually like the idea of them swapping in and out party style as I think that would be a more enjoyable battle than the intense fighting them all at the same time battle. God just imagine having them combo attack with like hybrid mixes of their Overdrive attacks &/or just regular attacks too in a creative combo manner.
    .
    I still think you'd get a multi-boss fight like we did with Yunalesca in FFX proper, but I think Seymour would be the main focus for the first part and maybe upon his defeat, she'd grant his wish and turn him into a Final Aeon that she'd control to fight against Yuna and the rest of your party. I think after the battle the game would play out for the most part how it did in FFX proper with maybe some minor-medium level changes, but eventually it'd reach the same outcome as the original game and we'd even get a final battle against Seymour one last time inside Sin though maybe a little different and harder to defeat since if I recall correctly the battle inside Sin wasn't the hardest Seymour battle in FFX proper; I think the fight against him on Mt Zanarkand was the toughest of the Seymour battles if I recall correctly.

    You can make the same parallels between Yuna and Tidus. The game uses characters' relationships with their parents, especially their fathers, as a metaphor for relationship with the past. Everyone with the game is coping with the *sins* of those who came before them in some way. Yuna is hopeful, Seymour is cynical, and Tidus is stuck in the past (literally) and unable to move forward until he gets over his issues with his own father. Furthermore, it's only by merging lessons of the past (Tidus and Auron) with hope for the future (Yuna and Tidus) and a desire for change (literally everyone in the main crew) that the problem of past *sin* is resolved.
    Game is deep.

      I feel sorry for him totally personally cause like kefka he is sorely misunderstood, had nobody willing to be for real with him (like how tidus gave yuna reality checks along the way despite people calling him whiney, he had the guts to tell people what they didn't want to hear. even if it was out of being naive, he could have been docile like yuna and kept thoughts unpopular to himself but didn't) and had so many struggles upon him he gained a warped view. even in imaginary places like spira it's lonely at the top and nobody is ever willing nor cares enough to bring you back down to earth and tell you're wrong. He could have been a sacrfical ally to yuna had he changed his ways. By sacrificial I mean I imagine a scenario where he'd go through a tough understanding then decides to aid, tidus is still sorta shady to him but allows him to tag along cause of yuna, and along the way seymour could have been used as some type device inside of sin or against Yunalesca himself.

      @Interlude65 You're all wrong.
      The difference between sociopath and psychopath is not "how they are made" (which isn't how mental sickness works in the first place), but what they actually are and do. Sociopaths and psychopaths act completely different, sociopathy CAN be hereditary while psychopathy is ALWAYS acquired.
      Both share traits, such as lack of empathy, and antisocial behaviour. However:
      A sociopath is a controlled, manipulative and calculative person.
      A psychopath is an erratic, violent and impulsive person.
      Of the two, psychopathy is the more common one despite not being hereditary at all - though this may also partially be the case because many cases of sociopathy never are diagnosed while psychopathy is pretty obvious.
      That's just a nutshell, but hopefully this clears up a few things.
      Let's talk FF villains then:
      Seymour: Text book example of a sociopath.
      Kefka: Text book example of a psychopath.
      Sephiroth: Exhibits signs of both - post-Crisis Core mostly psychopath.

    Very interesting, Seymour is a deeper character than he gets credit for I suppose, though I still find him a bit of a joke. I prefer to think of the main antagonists of FFX as Yunalesca and the church of Yevon itself. There's never been a better analogy for our own corrupt religions than FFX and that's what elevates the story way beyond most others. The idea of the characters dying at 17 sounds horrendous...therefore I'm surprised they didn't use it for FFXV. xD

    Tidus and Yuna have a better dynamic completing eachother due to each being in perfect contrast and opposite personality both filling in the missing parts of eachother. Yuna is shy, overly polite, timid, and reserved. Tidus is outgoing, gets to the point, confident, and speaks his mind. They both also have similarities too that go very deep into a multitude of comparisons when analyzed. Seems like the video above searched very hard to make dots connect with Yuna and Seymour creating loose parallels. I enjoy Tidus/Yuna dynamics and parallels alot more. It makes them a perfect couple that complete eachother. I wish they had a few more scenes with them in love (for all those who always go against canon FF relationships) atleast it made more sense than Lulu and Wakka unnecessarily having a baby just for the sake of making them nonplayable in 10-2's unforgiving messiness lol

It would be cool if a half human, quarter Guado, quarter Al Bhed came about. They would better represent “the peoples of Spira,” as Seymour is fond of saying. 🤔 So in a way, I was all for that idea. I like the idea of 17, and how they kept. It really hit home when during Sin's attack on Kilika it can be assumed that the three kids and the baby a lady was holding didn't make it. See her break down and cry like that during the sending was so sad and heartbreaking. They really told the story throughout the entire game and no one was just filler. Every character had a connection through death and experiences at young ages. Yuna's parents gone when she was young, Tidus's parents, Auron losing his friends and his life, Rikku and her "family," Kimarhi and the tragic death of a lot of Ronsos, Wakka with his parents and brother, Lulu with Lady Ginnem and Chappu. Even O'aka and Wantz's sister. I love how it told the story of death in its inevitability and how it affects people differently and how they react to it. Yuna seeing it as hope, and Seymour seeing it as an end all and to bring death to everyone all because it affected him so negatively.

      Their history is even more tragic.
      They were pretty much low class workers who were forced to make weapons for Bevelle on the threat of execution and were blamed for all wars that occurred.

      The Al Bhed are a near-human race. They all have green eyes with uniquely swirled pupils and this is established at some point in the game by someone who states these as traits the Al Bhed are all in possession of. I could be mistaken, but I believe all the Al Bhed who feature in the game have blonde hair, although I don't believe this particular trait was specifically mentioned by anyone in the game. Whilst technically, the Al Bhed are not human (as they are near-human), I would consider it very likely they are a subspecies given the very subtle differences in the physical traits between the two races.

      Mark Ritchie Those just sound like racial traits, not species. We have races with different skin colors, differently shaped eyes, etc. Those are way different traits than just being 100% blonde.

      Ifrit101 khimari was humanoid as well. But wasn’t human. Al-bhed fall into that category. Similar, but not the same.

    The more obvious parallel is that they're both summoners and they use the same weapons/shields in battle. I think Seymour was meant to be the dark version of Yuna.

    I think in the case of Yuna, even had they known her family history, they probably still would have accepted her. Its easy to be prejudice against an unknown face but its much harder to agree with the standards when you put a face to the fear. While Wakka does not know about Yuna's heritage, Lulu did not seem shocked by Tidus learning it. Infact, it seems like she already knew and it didn't push her away from Yuna. More than that, she became her guardian, pushing her to risk her life to ensure Yuna either called forth the Final Aeon or give up the journey altogether. Wakka has lingering hate for what happened to Chaupu. I still don't think he would have abandoned Yuna in the grand scheme of things though. Everyone in the village was extremely supportive of Yuna and I like to think its because of Yuna as oppose to High Summoner Braska's influence and just having the conservative village style influence.
    As for Seymour, I think this si a different scenario. The Guado kind of remind me of the elves in a lot of fantasy stories. Very proud, long living, and stubborn. They believe their race is the most supreme. Mix races is kind of like the half elves of fantasy stories. Always criticized for it. Especially when an elf is involved. Jyscal shared criiticism when he was with another race and bore harsh ire when they had a child. There wasn't enough time to bare sentiment to put a face to the prejudice like Yuna had so their minds were made up before he even had a vhance. Sure changed their tune when he became a Grand Maester but I'm sure Seymour had no problem sending the Guado too their deaths after what he went through as a child. He had no love for them and the Gaudo only wanted to show how superior they were. Didn't help that the Guados' numbers were abysmal before they attacked Home and were on the brink of extinction after the fact.

    he needed friends

    • @60wwediva
      @60wwediva 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      y'know what you're right. think about it seymour never had friends or a community behind him like yuna. he didn't have a small gang of people to rationalize with him, help him, tell him what he didn't want to hear, support him. he just had shitty followers who manipulated him and let him be evil cause he was half guado and they thought they were better than all humans anyway.
      seymour got on my damn nerves but I will always love him as a villian cause had people taken the time out to actually rationalzie with him and see why he was so fucked things could have been different.

    I always wondered why Rikku didn't have greater interest in Titus. Titus would know how to use technology in ways she wouldn't. He would literally be a living fossil to an archeologist. In this way he would be interpreted as experiencing the war 1000 years ago. So he would have knowledge of existing weapons at least passively. Also he should of been inquired about yunalesca being they existed in the same period. Possibly yunalesca could have recognized Titus as someone from her own time. This reality demands parallels to come into existence.

    You coyld say that Seymour is Yuna's Dark Eon version. On top of that, SPOILER ALERT..... the ending reminds me of Klonoa Door to Phantomile: Yuna=Huepow, Tidus=Klonoa. The tidusness this game brought me has partially, ultimately not allwed me to see behind the façade of these two characters. A good parallel could also be done between Maechen and Shelinda, or Shelinda and the chocobo guy. Maechen and Enoch (the old grand priest man).
