After our not-so-subtle tease as to who would be next in our Origins series, Zidane Tribal has surfaced! We don't know about you guys, but right now we're just sitting back and appreciating the job that Sakaguchi and Ito did with the story in Final Fantasy IX. Thanks for watching all, and let us know who you'd like to see next! ~Darryl/Lauren
Final Fantasy Union That was an incredibly well researched and put together origins video. I'm very impressed and it refreshed me on a game i beat over 15 years ago. Id love to one day see you cover Vivi, but Genesis next :)
Here's one for ya...what comes next? It's speculation, but theoretically, Zidane and Garnet get married, and....that's a whole new world he has to learn to deal with. Politics is still out of his ken.
The problem of ff9 actually came from it's badtime launching, just a year before ps2 release (which have far more better graphic than ps1).. That's why it was replaced by ffx on hotlist immediately.. Even until today, I still feel the relationship between tidus-yuna was a complete ripoff from zidane-garnet
FF IX taught me a lot about life. It has many philosophical themes that really made me think. It has etched it way to my heart that it's impossible that I will ever forget the characters in this game. When I played this game 18 years ago, I literally felt attached to the characters that I thought they were my friends. And when the game ended, the time came that I had to say goodbye to them. It was so heartbreaking that I shed a lot of tears. Until now it's one of the most heartbreaking moments in my life that I wish I could turn back the time that I was with them discovering things and doing adventures. This game gave me my life.
I cried too when I ended the game. I honestly postpone the final battle for weeks because I knew it would break my heart to end this game. I did't want it to be over. This is one of the best written FF games, with some of the best characters in the entire franchise.
11:10 "Zidane then fought valiantly on the hunt" more like, then Zidane k.o'd himself on the hunt so Freija could win the hunt and get that really good accessory that would help the party later
@@rawnorth7882 random person: why's no one talking about FF7 and 8? me: I hear ALOT of people talk about 7 and 8 to death. and no one gives a shit about 9 and 10. I guess being emo is more important. >.>
I would love love love love an episode on Freya! she honestly might be the single most under appreciated character in final fantasy ever! look at all the things that happened in this story. look at at all the things that directly involve her. look at the way she handles those things. she is the single most powerful example of a woman facing her reality head on and not giving into it! there is that scene where freya stands next to Beatrix (who slaughtered her country men) and fights along side her. she does it not because she wants to but because she knows it is what needs to be done. I really love freya so much for so many reasons and I really hope that the final fantasy community will recognize her as being one of the greatest ever!
Well said bro! I totally agree with you about Freya. She is definitely one of my favorite characters.... in a game that is full of amazing characters Freya really shines. Even if at times it's a low key shine and not always direct and obvious to the viewer sometimes....I could always notice the strength and drive in her. one of the best female characters that FF has ever had to offer
I had a sibling crush on her in my younger years. I had her in the party half of the time. even if she has emotions she's still awesome. even if I grown out of the whole crush thing. she's still one of the cool female characters. my sister was super emotional (half was because of her depression) but got inspired by Freya on keeping herself more together when it comes to real hard moments in life. like losing a pet dog. when she was younger she cried over 2 weeks. now she's passing through it better after playing the game for awhile when we have another pet passed away on us. and that's how cool Freya is to some people.
This brings up a somewhat depressing thought. Zidan is immortal. I never really caught that when I was playing the game. This would mean he would enjoy some happiness with Garnet as things were at the end of the game, but what about 50 some-odd years later when he's still got the body of a 20 year old and he's now caring for a 66 year old Garnet in her decline of advanced age? How about going on later as he witnesses his friends and loved ones growing old and dying and leaving him behind? It's still not THAT bad, but it does present a few philosophical difficulties to ponder over.
Sakaguchi threaded on that themes on its own studio (Mistwalker) game, Lost Odyssey. Even thougth not perfect, its a better final fantasy than some of the FF series' entries
@@mikea2410 I guess you wasn't watching the video. Zidan's home planet give them the energy to live longer lifes. but there planet's running out of energy and for that there lifespans are very short now. when they show up on gira the souls give off the same energy that give them longer lifespans. so the leader stick all of that energy they pick up and stick it into Zidan. so yes he was immortal at that time. but the leader toke that soul energy out of him.
When they were on the beach following Brahne's death, I always thought that was Vivi talking. Vivi was closer to the camera in that scene, and seemed to move at appropriate times during the dialogue. The narrator also said that Brahne 'stopped', a term Vivi used to describe death. Just me?
Yeah, it's Vivi. In French version (based on the japanese), there's no doubt about it since the monologue is talked with a childish vocabulary. I did the french version before the english, so I was kinda shocked when I heard the author saying it's Zidane talking, but maybe it's unclear in English ? Even so, the questions asked are Vivi themed, about life and death, so I still think it's pretty obvious.
It's Vivi talking. Its confirmed even in the english version later in a scene at black mages village, when Vivi talks about his confusion and impressions about life and death and compares what he felt on that beach when he saw Brahne die and the effect it caused on Garnet (and he was sad) with what his grandpa told him when he passed away.
I just played through the game on Nintendo Switch and confirm that it was Vivi that was speaking. The game did the classic text with no quotes to make you think it was Zidane, but it's revealed a few moments into the text that it is Vivi
Zidane is awesome period! By far my favorite character next to Ramza Beoulve and maybe Tidus who has a similiar personality except Tidus isn't the flirty type. I think these kinds of characters are a good rest from all the serious and broody main characters.
The best protagonist in one of the best games in the series! His character arc alongside the massively complex story of FFIX, is the most fleshed out and fully realised. Zidane was and always will be a role model to me, as will all the cast of 9. :)
@@XieLiansHat vivi is my favorite character to but only because i felt sad for him and he was a powerhouse. But Zidane was basically just a puppet like vivi(altough with a greater purpose)and so was Kuja. Zidane(we) just didn't find out until the end.
Yeah... I loved Zidane because he was fun and upbeat but he was also flawed, human, he had his moments of despair, but in the end, he was compassionate, and stood firm in his convictions to do what was right. It made me feel hopeful, gave me something to strive for, that even if where you start out in life is something awful, you can grow beyond it, become something better.
@@UnifiedEntity I know. I really wish people could actually provide constructive critisism from time to time instead of just bashing the character outright.
CLoud's issues are what make him such a compelling character. Squall wasn't as deep maybe but his character design is cool af. Zidane is kind of annoying and his design is hideous
I always preferred more outgoing happy characters rather than the brooding type. They don't always have to be a character of solitude and depression to be "deep". This vid made me see new things about Zidane and his growth that I never realized while playing. His development was more subtle. Stretching and spreading throughout the four discs. Growing from a goodie helping follower to a protective, mature leader.
I agree characters can be many different things to have a development. they don't have to be depressed to prove that. emo's overrated in ff universe and there's ALOT of emo characters to count. is like "yeah I get it you want the characters to be "human" doesn't mean they HAVE to be ether depressed or annoyingly dumb as hell to be human." they need to get a hold of there selfs. and it's not just FF ether I also talking about shows, movies and books and also things outside of ff that does the same annoying thing over and over again.
FF9 was my first FF game and is my fave, Zidane is a fantastic protagonist, while i never saw him as the main character, he was a side character, helping, but not that important to the story. Garnet/Sarah instead was the real deal, she was the most important person and the reason why everything was happening. At this point, Zidane was no better than Steiner, a guard and protector of the princess. This changed when Garnet drugged them, with the Princess gone and Burmica attacked, Zidane had to take action, he had to help the people of Freya and did so. He could chase after the princess and get her back, but he knew what was more important and grew slowly to a hero. The story turned, shifting the role of the important character slowly, almost secretly, from Garnet to Zidane. Suddenly, Garnet happend to be pulled into a story that has acually nothing to do with her. I was surprised when, before Queen Brahne death, i noticed this. Suddenly, everybody asked Zidane for guidance, for advice and looked up to him as a leader. Sure, he is a carefree, obvious woman chaser, a thief, a trickster, a joker...but he has a golden heart, a brotherlike attitude, a strong will and a power to change and grow, something Kuja only could do at the end of his screentime/life. Final Fantasy 9 is a game about questions, growing up and finding your place in the world...even when you where there all along, but could not see it.
Well said. Although respectfully i disagree with you on him being unimportant to the story up till Garnet/Sarah drugged them. He was vital; if it wasn't for Zidane then she would not have gone through the character development she did up till that point. So even if the story stayed exactly the same up till said point, without zidane the butterfly effect ensures there would be a completely different outcome after this
Your last line is why I usually said the story is not for children. I used to play this when I was early teenager, just play it because oh fight looks cool, eidolon summon is cool etc2, but I was missing the story completely, maybe because I lack understanding about heavy topic like this. But when visiting the story again after becoming adult, yeah now I start to realize that the story is really good, there is sad/tragic, fun, love and some heavy thoughts included.
this game is brilliant, subtle, has an incredible plot that is a fantastic back drop to the character driven moments of the cast. well paced, fun and has an incrdible amout of heart and life lessons. i freaking love this game. This and OoT were the defining games of my childhood.
I may need to play again FFIX, because I totally missed how emotionally detached Zidane was being, it's fascinating! Also, now that we're talking about FFIX (AKA best jrpg ever), any chance we'll be seeing the origins of Kuja or Vivi? Maybe Garnet? FFIX has such an interesting cast.
Agreed, it all went way over my head as a kid. I was 10 when this came out, and i probably played through it 3 times before i really grasped the depth of the story and characters as a teen. Although after watching this video i had to buy ff9 on my phone and am currently giving another playthrough while i wait for ff7 remake!
This game is like a wonderful piece of literature that changed my life that I still revisit every few years. It is so philosophical and moving. We may all start off just wanting to have fun or being carefree, but then there is the world is chaos pulling us into that perspective "do I need a reason to help people?:
I LOVE ZIDANE and all chars in FF9. From childhood till marriage i never get bored with the play chars, magics, mainstory nor sidestory. Summons.. 💗ff9 forever!
Zidane Tribal will always be my favorite character in the Final Fantasy series. He is one of those characters that we all love because of his cheerful and caring personality. Also seeing him all broken and depressed ever since learning about his birth made me cry seeing a loving and sweet character being so down and broken thinking he's nothing but a killing machine. Thankfully his friends helped him to remind him that he's not a killer, but a sweet and kind man everyone loves very much. It's because of Zidane's kindness and showing his good personality to the people and friends he met on his journey, they changed a lot for they learned to help others and cast aside their sorrows. Plus the ending of IX will always make me smile and cry seeing Zidane be reunited with his love Dagger aka Garnet and his best friends. I remember I had a best friend who loves Zidane so much that she wishes for a Final Fantasy IX remake or an anime, she goes by the name Lindaru(now called Lindar). I've been her friend for ten to eleven years only for our friendship to end cause she couldn't talk to me anymore cause of what's going on where she lives. Sure I see her on Twitter even though I can't talk to her anymore cause she doesn't do messages anymore I'll never forget her and the memories we shared about our love to Zidane and Final Fantasy IX.
Zidane is the best protagonist in the entire series, sure Cloud, Squal, Tidus, Terra, Cecil and Lightning look more cool, but the thief with a tail is the only protagonist that truly diserves to be love not just by Garnet, but by everyone around. He is the only protagonist of a FF game that can make you laugh and then touch your heart and make you cry, he has the most memorable quotes of any other character in the franchise. Every time I see the ending of this master piece, when Daga runs to him , and lets her pendant and crown behind just to give him a hug I think the same thing....that guy, more than any other protagonist in the franchise, truly deserves that hug.
Thanks for this Zidane origins. He's my absolute favorite protagonist of all FF series. After watching this, I just wanna replay FF9 all over again... LoL... Keep up the good work, dude. I'll be looking forward to your next FF origins videos.
These origin stories are incredible. I never completed the game and also never fully understood the game I was playing. This sheds new light on Zidane and I'm really impressed with him as a character.
This is one of my favorite series on Facebook. And Zidane is definitely my favorite final fantasy character. No lie, final fantasy 9 was the first game that ever actually made me cry lol😭😂
thanks for the video, it was thanks to Zidane (chidan/jidan, wtvr) that I thought fullmeaningless in life. playing his story changed me for life. One thing that revealed his growth, one scene you didn't show, was when the party was confronting Kuja at the Tree, and Dagger was fearful for her mother. Zidane not understanding motherhood said: "she extracted eidolons from you and started a war! she doesn't care one bit if your alive or dead, YOU DON'T HAVE TO CALL HER MOTHER ANYMORE!" Dagger replied "she's my only mother I don't care if you don't understand" and Zidane was, spaced out, it was a shock to him! a wake up call to emotions, even if they don't make much sense. Also the scene when Brahne dies, I always thought the text was Vivi's thoughts because he uses the black mage vocabolary of "coming to a STOP at any moment" (stop=death black mage vocabolary). I always thought zidanes's thoughts weren't made in that scene, because he was confused, not understand motherhood, on the acount of the previous scene with dagger. Also, but you'd have to have studied medievel writting to know (european) on the inicial sight of the game, after the word Squaresoft appears at the main menu, that video shows map locations and events of the game (full motion videos) and you can notice some descrepancies with the english translation for some locations. One being The Iifa Tree: the name is not Iifa, the first "I" is actually a J - in medieval european writting, and the F is not an f at all, it's a letter no one uses anymore, and it reads "SS" (there's even an metion on the first harry potter book about it) - (I had a class on it in colleage) - thus it's Jissa Tree! - It makes more sense, because Jissa, is the islamic term for Jesus, and in the book of Apocalipse (square is know for taking ideas from religions and myths) There are several you would call Angels of Death - from the Fourth horseman to Abaddon and the King of Kings. Hence, it is "an Angel of Death sending Souls to the Tree of Jissa" - the line zidane says - no blasphemy intended, but it gives a little more content to the rich caracter of Zidane and the complexity of the Terra iconography and plot I loved your video, thanks
i'm glad i came across with this RPG and loved it. i'm thankful to my uncle who mistakenly bought FF IX over FFVIII coz it was out of stock and able to play Zidane. this game is the jewel of my childhood and there's no way i'll get tired reliving it's story. given the limitation of graphics you can feel the emotions and get moved when you watched the FMVs. like when Dagger saw Atomos attacked Lindblum you can feel her despair and frustration by her gestures even without the voice. I wish they could do a remaster for this masterpiece.
I never thought of Blank as wanting nothing more to do with Zidane when he chose to leave in the beginning of the game. I always figured he was just giving him a bit of crap for being a pain in the ass, and his "how about never?" comment was simply sarcasm, as opposed to genuine anger.
Another excellent entry into this lore series. Love the research and enthusiasm that comes through. You also do a great job of explaining the story in a clear and precise way.
This is why I Love about this game. too much emotion, different stories and situation which connects all in the end. I dont know how many times i beat this game, but One thing is for sure, I LOVE EVERY SECOND OF IT!
Thank you for showcasing Zidane in the best way I have ever seen from anyone. An awesome character and my favourite protagonist from my favourite video game.
I always thought the monologue at 20:03 was Vivi, like how the ending monologue was. It seemed to me like the story was being retold by Vivi, and so all of the first person narration was his.
It is indeed Vivi who says that, which is why I was really annoyed with attributing that to Zidane. On the other hand I believe this message is very fitting for what most of the characters felt.
Lovin this vid. Finished my first 9 playthrough not so long ago and it made Zidane become my favorite protagonist now. He's amazingly developed. FF9 become my favorite and would love to replay again sometime soon.
I wish the reveal of Zidane's nature as Garland's "Angel of Death" was built up a bit better. The game does a decent job of setting up his connections to Terra, but when it comes to the specific revelation of the character's role in all that, as well how earlier introduced antagonists Garland and Kuja tie into it all, it feels a bit forced. The reason being is that it feels a bit too coincidental, as Zidane was pretty far removed from all these machinations at the beginning of the game. Usually when you see stories pull the big twist where the hero has some connections with the main villains and/or are part of some grand plan, it's usually set up well enough that you'd believe the protagonist would likely get involved with those people again somewhere down the road. The more estranged they are (in this case, one plopping the other to a completely different part of the planet, with both of them originating from an entirely different WORLD), the more carefully constructed and convincing the build up has to be. But in FFIX, it's only through sheer coincidence that Zidane, of all people, would wind up reuniting with Kuja in the midst of the latter's evil plans and involvement with the queen's shenanigans. I'm not sure how they'd be able to do it with a bit of revising here and there, but if the story was done in a way where some force or something that was driving Zidane towards the truth, I think it wouldn't worked much better, because conceptually, the whole Terra section when taken on its own is pretty cool.
I know it's a common trope, but as I stated before, a lot of these cases only seem coincidental on the surface, but are often more neatly set up (or in the case of Star Wars' Vader twist, just really conveniently aligned well enough that Lucas' idea only thought up later during the production of Empire worked well enough) that, when you look back behind everything that occurred before hand, it doesn't seem too ludicrous that these kinds of meetings would eventually take place. Basically, an established sense of inevitability to it all. In the case of Star Wars, we actually have a contrast between the more solid and bottle-of-lightning execution of the Vader twist where a lot of those elements (like Luke and Obi-Wan's relationship) were more or less already neatly interconnected enough (save for the convenience of the Droids falling into Owen's hands, which does strain some of its credibility) versus the Leia twist, which is actually considered somewhat contrived by some, because that one relies far more on the "It was the Force" excuse. Back in the day, it came off extremely hackneyed by comparison, as well as repetitive, because we had JUST gotten a big familial twist at the end of the last one. When it comes to FFIX, it just really needed that more carefully crafted set up. All the little bits of foreshadowing, and the Terra lore are cool enough, and the whole section on the world is pretty great when taken on its own, but if they had been able to craft a more believable build up for Zidane's place in it all, it could've been spectacular. Some think that it might be attributed to the sudden shift of the game's development from a throwback Gaiden title to a mainline FF installment, and that they may have felt that Zidane was becoming overshadowed by Garnet's plotline, thus they tried to come up with a way to have his place in the world be of major importance, but lacked the time to significantly revise earlier portions of the plot to make it seamless.
IX was my first ff experience, and is still my favorite. While I'm not the type of person to replay games over and over, but I still replay it every now and the
What I would give to play this game for the first time again. I remember completing it and crying. Not many things have been able to give me that feeling before or since.
Garnet/Dagger next please!! One of the (mentally/emotionally) toughest FF heroines (along with Yuna IMO) considering the journey she went thru in FFIX! Love her dearly!!
I don't know if it's just me, but I feel that it took the release of the first Dissidia for IX to truly enter the limelight. It's certainly what introduced me to this franchise, and as time's gone on I've seen IX get more and more deserved recognition among the fanbase, more attention. Of all the FF plushies at my local comic shop, Zidane is one of the frequents, alongside Cloud and Squall and Lihhtning. He's truly one of the greats, as is the game. Wonderful analysis that revealed things I'd often misinterpreted, a stellar tribute to a stellar game.
FF9 is my ultimate favorite JRPG, mostly because the characters and Zidane, aside with Freya are my favorite ones ❤❤. This gaves brings so many good memories of my childhood, the golden era of PS1... I have no complaints about this masterpiece.. I replay the remastered version and now I hope for the Remake 🎉
"No Cloud nor Squall shall hinder us” - yet I do not concur. But one thing is true, this was the last overworld Final Fantasy and will be remembered for the ages.
At the time this game was released there was a really famous French football player called Zidane (pronounced "Zi-Dan"). That's probably why most Europeans pronounce it that way.
I never noticed how indifferent and emotionally stunted Zidane is. I was kid when I played the game. That adds so many layers to his character. Thank you so much for this video!
That was awesome! Thank you! I always loved Zidane's playful and cheerful behavior. The way he helps and teases others, grows and bonds with Garnet is fun and romantic! I too feel he is one (if not the most) developed character of the FF franchise. And thanks to your dedicated work, I know just which two Japaneses to thank for this rich scenario (Hironobu Sakaguchi and Hiroyuki Ito 30:35). Hopefully, they will team up again in an upcoming (FF) game to produce a yet again superb story and memorable characters. Next, could you please do a Celes Chere Origins, a Kain Highwind origins and a Tifa Lockheart origins? :) Looking forward to it (them).
I just finished FF9 a couple weeks ago! Thank you so much for the great analysis video on Zidane. This game is truly a masterpiece, as is Zidane's character. This is the first video of yours I've watched, and I'm already Subscribed. :D
I also finished FF9 a month ago AND god it became my fave final fantasy, so beautiful and amazing game ❤ I love Zidane's character too, it's refreshing to have one like him in a FF game. ❤
Ok ff9 was a two player game that a lot of people didn’t know about. That was great. Building up the Trance meter for a boss just for a random battle to push you into it mad me mad. But I still liked the fact of tag attacks
Just finished FFIX today at long last (lost my save data back in the day so I bought the Switch version) and I’m very happy I did. The game is a masterpiece and just so beautiful. Will replay it again one of these days (with the intention of getting the best weapons and Ozma and such).
What's common on all these videos is that the first entry into FF tends to be the favorite for that person. That's the human tendency but it does speak to how well these games were from the peak days of the franchise.
FF9 has always been my favorite and was my first journey into Final Fantasy. I love the progression of Zidane and he is one of the main reasons why I've played through that game as many times as I have. Thank you for the awesome video.
I suspect people saying it was childish back then to have unplugged their brain before playing this game. It's all about existentialism, mortality, using vessels in order not to disappear, depression and meaning in life... Simply great even today
Woot Zidane! He's part of my favorite group of Final Fantasy characters. Great video, keep up the great work @Final Fantasy Union! =D Looking forward to the next character you go in-depth with.
Zidane is Goku. He has the tail. His limit break form is basically super saiyan. He was sent as a child from another planet to destroy this one but ended up malfunctioning and going off to do something else.
@@ladyraven3418 Sora's original design was essentially a human/lion hybrid but this was scrapped because Zidane also had a tail and a similar happy-go-lucky personality. I believe the KH Wiki has a picture of Sora's original concept somewhere
I am notorious for starting games and not finishing the games and i remember that this was the first game that i ever finished. Sure there may have been other games after this but this series will always have a special place in my heart
Final Fantasy IX will always be my favorite. Is the truly Fantasy I was always expecting from a Final Fantasy. Nowadays is "cute" everything and boring.
If there was ever a Final Fantasy 9-2 I would want to see the main characters be a grown up Eiko, one of Vivi's children, Beatrix, Kuja, Steiner, Freya. I think it would be really poetic if Kuja and Zidane are both alive in a sequel, because what if abandoning their fears and the craving of power is what makes it possible for them to both live. I would want to see like a Lovecraftian influence and maybe the story is that this creature from an alternate dimension/reality kidnaps Garnet and Zidane and inhabits their bodies as it causes chaos and drains life from the planet leaving the kingdoms and planet in peril.
I know that my opinion won't be very fair compared to many others, but I think Zidane is one of the most relatable characters in the PS1 Final Fantasy saga. I've played about 2-4 hours of VII and VIII and it's been quite some time since I played the first few games, and I found both Squall and Cloud to be too fixed on their ideas or stereotype, to the point of being a bit whiny and tedious. Zidane on the other hand has a bubbling personality whose many sides are shown to us right in the first hours of gameplay, and it really feels like he's matured after the journey he and his team undertake (is this verb correct?), adding layers of depth to an already likable protagonist (btw I'm not saying that Squall's or Cloud's personalities don't develop during their respective games). A bit like Tidus from FFX, but way more faceted and nuanced as a character. I liked the other episodes, but IX is my favourite, and Zidane is one of my favourite characters.
I see what you're saying and agree on most things, but there's absolutely 0 way you're going to get a good idea of a character in FF7 or 8 in only 2 hours. Especially Cloud. I recommend at least reading up on Cloud as a character, he's a snarky jerk who becomes a scared and paranoid loser, and then becomes a pretty serious character with a bit of a goof factor in him. If you read up on the story it'd make sense as to why you probably didn't like him when he was first presented to you, you're being played in the writer's hand like putty
Pretty sure its cause Cloud and Leon being older and actually suffering from real tragedy as their games even begin is why they are "stuck in their ideas". Cloud literally had someone in his party die and at the time he was moving past his fragmented psyche. Not understanding why everyone is all anti Cloud and Squall cause they aren't all bubbly
Zidane going back for Kuja is a true hero moment. So many games say to gate the main antagonists, but in this one, Did and goes back to comfort a hurting, dying person.
I personally think that Zidane is the best FF character there ever is. He really is quite fun, meaningful, and cool in his way. Also everything that he is contrasts the other aloof FF characters (just saying he's different from them, which is a nice change of pace). And his words of "You don't need a reason to help others", simple and already meaningful in a lot of ways.
I really love the concept art. Whoever's responsible for it deserves recognition and praise. Zidane is awesome:Why I was born...How I wanted to live...Thanks for giving me time to think.
how every FF game is about finding your identy/true self :D This series is really aimed at teenager/adolescentes - No critique - just an observation - doesn't mean its bad (and personally as I grew older I got sick of this theme and those question "who am i, where I belong and what is my purpose" you thought about for years, came to a conclusion and just want to move on at some point) - oh, of course I still like FF games till X .. X was odd. FF6 is my favorite.

I cried too when I ended the game. I honestly postpone the final battle for weeks because I knew it would break my heart to end this game. I did't want it to be over. This is one of the best written FF games, with some of the best characters in the entire franchise.

Exactly! Zhanghai spawn at 4:30 🤗
Idk i've never liked the idea of losing so i actually never let freya win the hunt xD
😂😂😂😂 my first play though.
everyone gangsta until Vivi wins the hunt.
Zidane knocked Freya out then himself so Vivi could get that w and absolutely ass card
This game and this character are so under appreciated. His personality is why I like him. He wasn't quiet and brooding like the previous protagonists.
And alot of people say 8 is underrated, i think 9 could be appreciated more. Even some of my friends who are die hard fans of FF7 never even played 9
@@rawnorth7882
random person: why's no one talking about FF7 and 8?
me: I hear ALOT of people talk about 7 and 8 to death. and no one gives a shit about 9 and 10.
I couldn't agree more.
It's still not THAT bad, but it does present a few philosophical difficulties to ponder over.
criminally underrated comment
Sakaguchi threaded on that themes on its own studio (Mistwalker) game, Lost Odyssey. Even thougth not perfect, its a better final fantasy than some of the FF series' entries
Makes him cherish every moment he spent with them imo
@@kasikasivendjinn5345 how was he immortal?
You are right, that was Vivi processing what had happened, not Zidane.
It is hard to see, as it is black screen with text. But it is Vivi, you can see to the term 'stop'.

“You don’t need a reason to help people.” My all time favorite quote comes from Zidane. Thanks to my very first FF protagonist
" You don't need a reason to help others "
Iván Moreno ...okay so what you’re saying is you won’t help hot people?
Thank you so much!! Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy protagonist and it was wonderful to relive his story again. :)
Sailor Mercury me too! I love zidane!
he has always been my favourite as well. Always had a problem with all of the Zidane hate.
Zidane is awesome period! By far my favorite character next to Ramza Beoulve and maybe Tidus who has a similiar personality except Tidus isn't the flirty type. I think these kinds of characters are a good rest from all the serious and broody main characters.
Zidane is my favorite character in the entire series as well.
By far my favorite! 9 was too good!
The best protagonist in one of the best games in the series! His character arc alongside the massively complex story of FFIX, is the most fleshed out and fully realised. Zidane was and always will be a role model to me, as will all the cast of 9. :)
Vivi tho
Vivi is the true hero
Vivi is amazing
I wouldnt call ff9 story complex dude lol.
@@lawrencefisherward3 Great twist right?!
After playing FF7, FF8, Zidane's personality was a breath of fresh air from Squall's angst and Cloud's....issues.
Agreed. Cloud was just depressing, and Squall was just an asshole until the 3rd disk.
Yes cause God forbid MCs are actually struggling with emotional problems because of their past and upbringing. Christ.
@GooseGumlizzard 9 felt like a kids game after playing 7 and 8.
So even if the story stayed exactly the same up till said point, without zidane the butterfly effect ensures there would be a completely different outcome after this
@@rawnorth7882 he does have a point, even the story got split there, you were playing as both characters.
@@ValkyrionX2 yeah, when I was a kid, I used to play FF9 with GameShark and spammed Ark on every battle.
this game is brilliant, subtle, has an incredible plot that is a fantastic back drop to the character driven moments of the cast. well paced, fun and has an incrdible amout of heart and life lessons. i freaking love this game.
Its hard to noticed because of his pretty carefree, happy and obvious behavior and i have to admit: i acually never saw it too, but it made sense.

Thanks for the Origins video, guys! Zidane is one of my absolute favorites, and 9 is probably my favorite ff game.
Every time I see the ending of this master piece, when Daga runs to him , and lets her pendant and crown behind just to give him a hug I think the same thing....that guy, more than any other protagonist in the franchise, truly deserves that hug.
theultimatepololo As a Squall fan, I agree with this statement SO MUCH! Zidane is just that great!

Final Fantasy 7 + 8 + 9 are the best...i hope for remakes of 8 and 9 too. Imagine FF 8 and 9 on PS5!

Hence, it is "an Angel of Death sending Souls to the Tree of Jissa" - the line zidane says - no blasphemy intended, but it gives a little more content to the rich caracter of Zidane and the complexity of the Terra iconography and plot
I loved your video, thanks
Pedro do Paço Thank you for the input! Did not know any of it, but makes total sense
Well, we learn something new every day. Didn't know this, thanks for the info!
Love your info about the Iifa/Jissa tree! And I agree, I think they made a mistake when they attributed those thoughts on Brahne's death to Zidane.
Wow thanks for the extra info!!! (PS I also attributed the text regarding Brahne's death to Vivi as well)
That definitely explains the four medallions
i'm glad i came across with this RPG and loved it. i'm thankful to my uncle who mistakenly bought FF IX over FFVIII coz it was out of stock and able to play Zidane. this game is the jewel of my childhood and there's no way i'll get tired reliving it's story. given the limitation of graphics you can feel the emotions and get moved when you watched the FMVs. like when Dagger saw Atomos attacked Lindblum you can feel her despair and frustration by her gestures even without the voice.
Agreed. This was thrash talking a good friend just because they are bro
@@francoisgagnonlemieux3135 agreed. Blank would never completely abandon Zidane. At least that's what I think.

Thank you for showcasing Zidane in the best way I have ever seen from anyone. An awesome character and my favourite protagonist from my favourite video game.
Around the 20:05 mark, I think that was Vivi talking about his feelings towards Kuja and Brahne, not Zidane.
It is Vivi in other languages his monologue is alot more childlike
This is the first final fantasy I played and my FAVORITE! I love this story so much and Zidane
I always thought the monologue at 20:03 was Vivi, like how the ending monologue was. It seemed to me like the story was being retold by Vivi, and so all of the first person narration was his.
It is Vivi, although it can be confusing.
While I'm not the type of person to replay games over and over, but I still replay it every now and the
When I think of monkey tailed characters I think of Zidane. He was a favorite of mine when I was a kid.

Just finished FFIX today at long last (lost my save data back in the day so I bought the Switch version) and I’m very happy I did. The game is a masterpiece and just so beautiful. Will replay it again one of these days (with the intention of getting the best weapons and Ozma and such).
I hope Zidane appears in Kingdom Hearts 4!
Chances are low because in KH all FF characters That appear are characters which been designed of Nomura :(
Watching this made me emotional. The story and feels in this game are so good. Just having the story retold like this was enough to make me relive it.

I don't like boring characters such as Lightning, Squall, etc...
Thanks for this!
Squall is FAR from boring. Lightning I can understand, but not the Gunblade specialist.
Squall was an introvert that got development unlike lightning
What's common on all these videos is that the first entry into FF tends to be the favorite for that person. That's the human tendency but it does speak to how well these games were from the peak days of the franchise.
FF9 has always been my favorite and was my first journey into Final Fantasy. I love the progression of Zidane and he is one of the main reasons why I've played through that game as many times as I have. Thank you for the awesome video.

Simply great even today
You need to do Cecil, Golbez, and Fusoya from FFIV and Shadow from VI. I always thought Shadow's dreams belied a cool background story.
Woot Zidane! He's part of my favorite group of Final Fantasy characters. Great video, keep up the great work @Final Fantasy Union! =D Looking forward to the next character you go in-depth with.
ah, Quina
or as I named him in my first play through "Cookie (as in monster)"
Q is for Quina. That's good enough for me ;P
The only character I ever rename is cait sith, and I name him cat smith
Final fantasy IX has been my favorite FF game for many years but I feel the final fantasy VII remake will become my new favorite soon.
FF9, one of the best RPG.
And please do Ramza next.
I would LOVE an orgins upload of Ramza Beaoulve as well. Final Fantasy Tactics was/is outstanding :)
Omg! I have to dust out my psx and play this game again. Parts of the story flew over my head or at least forgot about it. Thanks for the story.
Zidane is soo awesome. So is FFIX. My most favorite ever. Such a beautiful and wonderful game.
My favorite and most played final fantasy game of all time, on disc 3 on my phone currently
Finally I was wondering when you would make it!
Zidane is Goku.
He has the tail.
His limit break form is basically super saiyan.
He was sent as a child from another planet to destroy this one but ended up malfunctioning and going off to do something else.
He is the reason Sora turned out to be human
Huh? How so? Was else would Sora be?
@@ladyraven3418 Sora's original design was essentially a human/lion hybrid but this was scrapped because Zidane also had a tail and a similar happy-go-lucky personality. I believe the KH Wiki has a picture of Sora's original concept somewhere
I am notorious for starting games and not finishing the games and i remember that this was the first game that i ever finished. Sure there may have been other games after this but this series will always have a special place in my heart
Please make kuja next
I came from the future and your wish has been fulfilled, my friend
FFIX has one of the greatest stories and soundtracks in the series...for sure.
Any chance for a "What if?" video about if Zack didn't die in the ffvii universe?
Suppose that Zidane and Kuja had time for some conversation while waiting out Kuja's 'clock to run out' together.
Final Fantasy IX will always be my favorite. Is the truly Fantasy I was always expecting from a Final Fantasy. Nowadays is "cute" everything and boring.
Yeah world of final fantasy disappointed me. I did enjoy 15 tho, enough i gave it 100% completion at lvl 67 including the dlc's
@@rawnorth7882 I like the ending and ardyn but fifteen was bad like it tried to be like the witcher and failed
Elena Beatrice Martinelli i think I love you
I see what you're saying and agree on most things, but there's absolutely 0 way you're going to get a good idea of a character in FF7 or 8 in only 2 hours.
I’m replaying from back in 2003 3rd time around lol I’m 30
lol I'm replaying FF6 atm. I feel so out of the loop playing 2D games in 2018.
I'm so glad I found you, you're truly an amazing story teller. Thank you!
how every FF game is about finding your identy/true self :D This series is really aimed at teenager/adolescentes - No critique - just an observation - doesn't mean its bad (and personally as I grew older I got sick of this theme and those question "who am i, where I belong and what is my purpose" you thought about for years, came to a conclusion and just want to move on at some point) - oh, of course I still like FF games till X .. X was odd. FF6 is my favorite.
