I'm going through FF6 on my Android, on my downtime. It's always been a favourite of mine, despite 7 being my first, back in the day. I always choose Locke as my main character. I can relate to losing love and feel like you've failed someone. Such an amazing story about hope and rebuilding yourself as a person. I was 6 when this game came out, they just don't make them like this anymore.
@@samsherrington7423, the characters are cartoony. They no longer match the same world as the settings especially indoors. It’s like Simpsons-style FF characters in a FF world.
@NΛzo Oh. Well I guess you're gonna cringe yourself to sleep, aren't you. I'm surprised purists ever get sleep. Always looking for an issue that isn't what they know best.
Cyan's love interest was a good cut, I think. He had just lost his family, Maybe, after the time jump it could happen, but even then it would have felt weird, almost creepy really in the context they were going for. Kinda stalkerish. It could be done, but seeing other romantic attempts in other media at that time, I'm glad they didn't try. But, I would have liked to see more between Sabin, Cyan, and Gau. Gau and Sabin's brashness with Cyan trying to keep them out of too much trouble is a great dynamic. It's one of the biggest reasons I still hope they make a modern remake of this game.
I think there's more info on them but I think alot of their plans for her were retooled into mog. Mainly the dance skill. Also there's a scene in the port city where Sabin's scenario ends that I believe is one of the last vestiges of her as a girl in the bar teases Cyan.
To this day, my favourite game in the series! It made such an impression on me when I first played it. It has a fantastic cast of memorable and endearing characters, a great story, amazing and iconic events, superb music, and a fun combat/progression system. I dream of the day this game gets a well-deserved remake!!
This game connected with me in ways i didnt understand at the time. But i think it really is the ensemble nature that drew me to it more than ff5 or ff7, which i consider the next two best ones personally. And seeing that there was much overlap between ff6 and chrono trigger makes so much sense now why these 2 are my most replayed square rpgs
"Aren't you a little short for an imperial soldier?" Harder to find Celes line based off Princess Lea if you rescue her from South Figaro with Locke still dressed in the outfit of an imperial soldier.
even harder is the secret second basement with treasure chests. I remember accidently finding it as a kid right before rescuing Celes, that was the best loot room ever.
"While not explicitly stated in any version of Final Fantasy VI, it was confirmed in an interview with the developers that Shadow is Relm's father." i just hope they made this cannon when they were making the game, not as an after thought "loose-end tie-in"
@@BleachBasket108 and in that ending FMV for the PS1 version, the part where Shadow is shown, there will be a quick flash. If you pause at the right moment, that flash will show Relm’s portrait
There was initially supposed to be a cutscene between Shadow and Strago where Strago confronts him on suspicions her is indeed her father and Shadow soft-confirms (as you would expect from him), but it was apparently scrapped. So I don't believe it was an afterthought
I got this game and the official guide (which was amazing) when it came out on the SNES in the US as a kid. It was my first experience with a story or gameplay options, and will always have a special place in my heart. So many great characters, moments, and places. I was blown away that there was a whole second half of the game where the entire world changed.
I've just started FFVI recently and am running through the World of Ruin, so this video has fantastic timing! Now if only I could spend an entire week playing instead of working...
I have 6 kids. Sometimes we read through books, sometimes we play through a Final Fastasy game! We did VI first, and IX just finished 2 weeks ago! You will get to play again! (PS, make your kids read the characters text!!)
@Yves-Marcel Kpodar if you want to use on computer, you can get the ROM online as well as a player for the ROM. Legally you just need to own a copy to play it this way (last I checked). You can also put this ROM on your phone and get a player for your phone. I won't give details on how or where, but googling ROMs and players will get you the info you need. It is available on PS1 if you can find a used copy as well.
I find it particularly sad that Angela had to go,poor Cyan would have had sweet moments.Paladin Shield made more enjoyable to unlock makes it even more fun to play with! But i have to say, writers coming up with their own characters sepparately sheds much light on their creations and feelings.
To this day, almost 30 year after it's original 1994 release, Final Fantasy VI (released in the US as Final Fantasy III on SNES) is still regarded as one of the greatest RPGs of all time. In 2017 IGN ranked it number 2 in their list of the top 100 greatest RPGs of all time. Number 1 is another of the 16 bit era creations from Squaresoft, now known as Square Enix. If you didn't see that issue of IGN, the game is Chrono Trigger.
Genji glove + Offering (attack four times, gengi glove = 8 attacks) + fixed dice (Setzer, easy 9,999 hits) + atma weapon = kill every boss in the game with one attack.
Seeing that breakdown of who handled each character, it's really little wonder that Terra and Celes usually get top billing with Sakaguchi and Kitase behind them, respectively. And then Locke, Sakaguchi's other guy, ends up coming in third, too.
That testing phase sounds absolutely brutal. Imagine being forced to play one of the greatest games of all time over and over, every single day, without being allowed to complete it... Would *still* be worth it just to have been part of the creation of this masterpiece, though!
I've been there, a few years ago I did a huge romhack for it and had to play through it several times as well as play through smaller pieces over and over and over to fix glitches and test balance. It was exhausting. I adore FF6, one of the greatest games of all time, but I feel like, worn out in terms of playing it.
I'm digging the "Figaro's theme" in the background, soo soothing! And this video made me want Square to remake FF VI and Chrono Trigger more than ever!
This is the game that should be on the remake train. Imagine FF VI with 7 remake level graphics, full voice acting, a slightly expanded story, Celes in her original design costume with the green leotard as an optional look, Terra having her Duodecim costumes (heck just costume options for everyone)...
Absolutely did NOT know about the Tales from the Desert book, not only do I feel like I need that in my life, but now I wanna know what other books there are about the game
I've never played a FInal Fantasy game ever in my life since my childhood in Nigeria but this game will be my first Final Fantasy game. I love the great writing, the characterization, the themes of hope in despair, perseverance despite failure, unity, and overcoming nihilism. Thanks for such a great video.
Terra and Celes are clearly the two co-main characters in FFVI. But I loved how each of the characters (besides maybe Umaro and Gogo) had character arcs.
Well, i disagree a bit. Terra is definitely the headliner, but Locke is the co-protag. But since his relationship with Celes is so integral to the story, it does make her a strong 3rd candidate. Nonetheless, i love all these characters and they represent how strong female protags can be developed, since neither Terra or Celes end up being subordinate to their male teammates.
I do agree it is Terra (latin for earth) in the first half and Celes (as in celestial, the heavens or sky) in the second half. It may have been intended at periods during development to be Terra and Locke, the very common thief and white mage character pairing (even tho Terra uses both) that is used so often (my 2nd favorite is Sothe/Micaiah from Fire Emblem). But it ended up being Terra and Celes.
The explanation for Kefka's awfulness though? 'The magic infusion wasn't perfected yet so his brain was damaged.' ...Kefka's undeniably easy to hate and is fun to watch (which feels bad to say), but I like my antagonists to have more substantial backstories. Shrugging and saying 'idk, it was bc an experiment goof' doesn't do it for me.
@@maestroplays2302 I agree 😊 I hope The First SOLDIER is a background Sephiroth DLC. Crisis Core humanised Sephiroth a little, but we need more in regards to that. Kefka was a great villain, but a bit too campy to take my top spot. 😅
This is my favorite FF.... I wanted a more realistic look, (like FF8), but there's a certain charm in those little sprites, where you can see all the emotions.
My favorite fact is the link between Biggs and Wedge in FF6, Chrono Trigger and Star Wars, because I remember asking myself this question when I was a kid. I was playing CT at my neighbour’s house and another friend of mine had FF6... Then I also noticed that some of the SFX were used in both games.
Same here! I yelled out ribbon when it was talking about it. I knew the force shield equipping bug but didn't know about the cursed shield equipping bug.
Or just fight the monsters on the first island in the World of Ruin (Where Celes wakes up) as the monsters are so weak that you can literally get the Paladin Shield in about an hour or so.
amazing video like always, i wish Hiroyuki Ito would get a directors role at Square again, i wish Sakaguchi himself would create a Triple A JRPG again........both grow more unlikly with every year that passes...
I'm constantly surprised How little I see one of the 'best' ways to use the cursed shield me and my brother found is talked about. It's very simple give it to Relm or Strago along with the Heal rod and then give them Offering and safety bit for Relics. Automatic random healing for the entire party. You barely have to pay attention to maintaining your HP. It actually ends up being a bit disappointing when the shield uncurses.
I found a lot of secrets in the game which never appeared in game magazines at that time like finding the Room in the Tower of fanatics which held Edgar's Air Anchor or the secret room in south Figaro during Lockes scenario. Good stuff!
No sir, I knew about most of these. One secret is that Celes was supposed to be the MAIN antagonist in the story, but Sakaguchi and Kitase loved her too much to do that.
That seems absolutely insane considering her role in the game proper. I wonder if Kefka had been thought of by that point, cause if he had, maybe they were trying to subvert expectations by having the clown actually be a good guy? Interesting nonetheless.
She was actually supposed to be the original Kefka, but that changed with Kitase told about her background. Sakaguchi, Normura, and the others decided they wanted her as a “minimal spy protagonist.” That changed later again when Kitase decided to develop a love line between Celes and Locke. So she became her own character with a more prominent role.
@@celes42017 exactly, it’s pretty much stated in game that around when Celes was born, she went through the perfected version of the process Kefka did to be able to use magic, making the two characters connected in that way.
Wow, I had no idea Kaori Tanaka (Soraya Saga) worked on FF5 and 6! I've always had a feeling she was a huge part of what made Xenogears and Xenosaga so emotionally compelling.
I do find it interesting that Biggs and Wedge were working with The Rebellion in Star Wars but The Empire in FF6. I wonder if that was deliberate on the part of the creators or it just happened to work out like that.
I believe both Biggs and Wedge were both defectors from the Empire in Star Wars. Wedge is most definitely a former Imperial TIE pilot trainee as he showed up in episodes of Star Wars Rebels confirming as such.
I reached this part of the video, paused it, took a guess at the two characters Nomura had. Got a small smile out of me to see I was right. Not that its a triumphant feat by any means, dude's style always has been and always will be this predictable for better or worse.
You thought that the FFVI first half was good. Then you realised there's so much secret and closure in the 2nd half makes you realised FFVI is an awesome game. Unlike other FF franchise, FFVI is the only game where all characters background, story progression and closure are within the game itself. Many RPGs doesn't have such element. And most offered ambiguous story telling and focus only the usual 2 protagonists.
I kind of wish at the end of the Game when Shadow wants to die on the tower, Relm would walk up to Shadow and say something like "Father? You're past sins have been resolved. You are a hero. Please come home".
A flirtatious woman named Angela, you say? You mean, like the magician character in Trials of Mana that goes by the same name; dresses provocatively; and taunts, teases and flirts with people?
Challenge accepted !!!! Best vg hero memory ever was having hironobu sakaguchi sign my strat guide for 3 on the snes and he laughed and his translator and him smiled and talked a bit then his translator said it was funny because it was released differently in America at first I had a guide from 7 too but had brought that because I heard in an interview it was his fav game he worked on the people behind us had a snes cart mint in box of 2 (4) which was literally the first rpg I played ever I kept stareimg at it lol beautiful moment
such a great video! this is the game that got me into final fantasy and really made me a gamer for life, still to this day it moves me and i play through it about every 2 years, and now that i think about it ........i know what im doing next week now , thanks !!
As Final Fantasy continues to forge its unique brand of rpg storytelling, regardless of graphic design and modern hardware capabilities, Final Fantasy 6 (3) has in my eyes been the best entry in the series, with final fantasy 12 being a very close second.
I thought the little bit in the last one where the bug finder production lady had to come in everyday and play the game looking for bugs. How fun but also insane would that get after awhile. “Another day of looking for Gow on the Vedelt” hilarious. I enjoyed learning that
Ah, Kaori Tanaka and her famous doujinshis. I'd almost give a limb to get hold of the FF6-one, luckily I got some of her later ones as internet was around by the release of Xenogears.
Didnt know any of the facts. Been a fan of the game since it came out. Puberty,80s music, and FF6. What a weird combo. Good vid, man. Thank you for an awesome video, and thank you to those who worked on this awesome game, and other good Square games. Secret of Evermore is underrated...
Edgar is my personal favorite. He was a real workhorse in both parts of the game and you cant unlock the ending without Edgar. Setzer Edgar and Celes are the only three party members you need to complete the game.
FFVI Natural Magic Run my favorite way to play it. Just avoid Esper magic and stat ups. I do like to mix it up with learning weapon/equipment spells though. Great game. Edit: Debilitator is an underrated tool. Steal is so useful, so many bosses have missable or awesome weapons that you can miss without Locke (or Shadow with Thief's Knife).
Something tells me they'd have needed more than 4 discs if they went for all those pre-rendered backgrounds and added FMV's for all the most important parts of the game... Or they'd have had to cut it down to the point it would have been a very different game.
Thanks for the video! I wonder, why is the automatic subtitles option disabled? As a person with hearing problems, I always use them along with the sound, and they have come a long way since they were first introduced - they are almost perfect now.
lol holy geez, I can't imagine what that must have been like after the long grind to make FF6 that after coming back from your vacation your first task is to come up with ideas for FF7.
And then be thrown right into helping out with Chrono Trigger. Not sure if this is true but I've heard a lot of that development team didn't exactly get along, making that game really feel like a "lightning-in-a-bottle" experience.
Cursed bug is sort of a waste of effort since you can just equip ribbon and only have to worry about Condemnation. Equip Ultima Weapon and deal damage based on HP and you deal 9999 per hit.
Thumbs up AT LEAST for the fact about Roni and Rene. I was watching Xenogears again right before this and noticed this connection even though I beat both of these games a long time ago.
FFVI had the best villain of the entire series in Kefka. While all the others wanted to destroy their respective worlds, Kefka actually managed to do it.
i'd recommend the hacks known as brave new world and return of the dark sorceror if you like FF6 so much and want a fresh new twist on FF6, note they are hacks of the SNES version so no playing them at school so easily :P

Let's hope not. Nomura would just add more dementors and motorcycle throws and Terra would brick as hard as Aerith did at the end. The FF7 remake was awful.

I can relate to losing love and feel like you've failed someone. Such an amazing story about hope and rebuilding yourself as a person. I was 6 when this game came out, they just don't make them like this anymore.
You can stomach the stupid mobile sprites? I literally can’t.
@@Keithustus Only way I have to play it. Could emulate it but I already bought it now. I don't see what the issue is, really. I think it looks better
@@samsherrington7423, the characters are cartoony. They no longer match the same world as the settings especially indoors. It’s like Simpsons-style FF characters in a FF world.
Android version? You fucked up.
@NΛzo Oh. Well I guess you're gonna cringe yourself to sleep, aren't you. I'm surprised purists ever get sleep. Always looking for an issue that isn't what they know best.
I'm gonna say Cyans removed love interest was my favorite fact. Also Cyan, Sabin and Gau becoming a family
I can't help but feel the letters he writes post apocalypse are a remnant of that storyline.
@@Nickle_King Thou, thou, thou!? Definitely with so many losses within a group of people, they can certainly help each other heal and form a bond.
Cyan and Locke have always been my two favorite ff characters. The removal of his love interest was a smart cut.
I think there's more info on them but I think alot of their plans for her were retooled into mog.
Mainly the dance skill.
Also there's a scene in the port city where Sabin's scenario ends that I believe is one of the last vestiges of her as a girl in the bar teases Cyan.
This game has the most beautiful story line in the franchise.
Woah, FF6 and Chrono Trigger are linked? As I kid, I just thought it was an easter egg to give a nod to FF6. Very cool....
"Aren't you a little short for an imperial soldier?"
Harder to find Celes line based off Princess Lea if you rescue her from South Figaro with Locke still dressed in the outfit of an imperial soldier.
Stuck in my old ways of playing the game the same way most times,i had never seen it.
even harder is the secret second basement with treasure chests. I remember accidently finding it as a kid right before rescuing Celes, that was the best loot room ever.
@@devildogmac you can actually go in there before you even recruit Sabin! Makes going up Mt. Koltz a little easier.

Just recently, I learned Shadow is Relm’s father. I didn’t even had the slightest idea when I played it in 2012
Also, his name is Clyde Arrowny.
"While not explicitly stated in any version of Final Fantasy VI, it was confirmed in an interview with the developers that Shadow is Relm's father."
i just hope they made this cannon when they were making the game, not as an after thought "loose-end tie-in"
@@Jimbownage it's pretty decently hinted in the couple scenes they're together in. And presumably why Interceptor likes Relm.
I kinda envy you that you are playing FFVI for the first time. It is a true masterpiece.
Kitase working on two phenomenal games back-to-back? I'm sure it was exhausting for him but the end results were beyond worth it.
If you all didn’t know if you have sneak ring on Locke on the floating island you can steal genji gloves from those dragons
Genji gloves. My favorite item from the game.
@@Davivd2 hell yes dude and u can steal them for the whole crew lol
Genji glove + Offering (attack four times, gengi glove = 8 attacks) + fixed dice (Setzer, easy 9,999 hits) + atma weapon = kill every boss in the game with one attack.
@@RowdyBoy82 Hell yea brother!
What?! This is the greatest.
Seeing that breakdown of who handled each character, it's really little wonder that Terra and Celes usually get top billing with Sakaguchi and Kitase behind them, respectively. And then Locke, Sakaguchi's other guy, ends up coming in third, too.
Hearing this games music always gives me chills.
FF6 without Celes and the Opera scene would be such a sad alternative.
That testing phase sounds absolutely brutal. Imagine being forced to play one of the greatest games of all time over and over, every single day, without being allowed to complete it...
Would *still* be worth it just to have been part of the creation of this masterpiece, though!
Especially when it was still a buggy mess, not yet a masterpiece
I've been there, a few years ago I did a huge romhack for it and had to play through it several times as well as play through smaller pieces over and over and over to fix glitches and test balance. It was exhausting. I adore FF6, one of the greatest games of all time, but I feel like, worn out in terms of playing it.
@@DrakeyC I can imagine! What kind of rom hack did you make?

6 and 4 will always be my Top 2, so thank you for this video
I'm digging the "Figaro's theme" in the background, soo soothing!
And this video made me want Square to remake FF VI and Chrono Trigger more than ever!
This is the game that should be on the remake train. Imagine FF VI with 7 remake level graphics, full voice acting, a slightly expanded story, Celes in her original design costume with the green leotard as an optional look, Terra having her Duodecim costumes (heck just costume options for everyone)...
I’m quite mad that they are using one of my favorite voice actors.....for Tifa! She could have been Terra!
Absolutely did NOT know about the Tales from the Desert book, not only do I feel like I need that in my life, but now I wanna know what other books there are about the game
Absolutely beautiful trivia tribute to my favorite game of all time. Thank you for producing this video!
That Vicks and Wedge fact is MIND BLOWING. As an all time fan of Chrono Trigger, I really appreciate learning that.
Wedge survived because of Vicks vapor rub is now head canon.
so that's why Setzer shows up in Twilight town he was a Nomura character
The two edgiest characters in FF6 were Nomura characters. Checks out.
That dawned on me too, thanks to this video. Good eye.
Excellent. My favorite from the series (and the first I played).
A beautiful master piece, in art direction, music, and story.
Saludos!
@@charpkun But you don't need/easily can get Locke in the second half of the game. If he was so much of a co-protag, he would be quicker to get.
Final fantasy 6 has the best antagonist games n jrpg history
Ehh. Pure badassness it has to be Sephiroth. But as far as bad guys 'winning' Kefka and Ardyn are the only ones.
The explanation for Kefka's awfulness though?
'The magic infusion wasn't perfected yet so his brain was damaged.'
...Kefka's undeniably easy to hate and is fun to watch (which feels bad to say), but I like my antagonists to have more substantial backstories. Shrugging and saying 'idk, it was bc an experiment goof' doesn't do it for me.
Best antagonist but sadly not the most recognizable. That goes to the One Winged Angel Sephiroth
@@maestroplays2302 I agree 😊 I hope The First SOLDIER is a background Sephiroth DLC. Crisis Core humanised Sephiroth a little, but we need more in regards to that. Kefka was a great villain, but a bit too campy to take my top spot. 😅
@@samsherrington7423 Hojo was the real bad guy of FF7.
This is my favorite FF.... I wanted a more realistic look, (like FF8), but there's a certain charm in those little sprites, where you can see all the emotions.
Terra Branford is my favorite Final Fantasy character ever. I love her Esper form in that despite looking feral, she remains so beautiful
I didn't know about the cursed shield. I always just equipped a ribbon.
Same here! I yelled out ribbon when it was talking about it. I knew the force shield equipping bug but didn't know about the cursed shield equipping bug.
I always thought it didn't remove the curse if you did not have it on
Or just fight the monsters on the first island in the World of Ruin (Where Celes wakes up) as the monsters are so weak that you can literally get the Paladin Shield in about an hour or so.
@@coryfusting9294 I fought in the forest east of duncan's house. I don't remember why I did that, but I remember the stuff was pretty difficult.
@@SuperSilDX Maybe it doesn't remove the curse, but it would be a damn powerful piece of equipment on its own with all those immunities.
My favourite FF, with Celes Chere being my all time favourite character.
amazing video like always,
i wish Hiroyuki Ito would get a directors role at Square again, i wish Sakaguchi himself would create a Triple A JRPG again........both grow more unlikly with every year that passes...
I always mitigated some of the negative stats by equipping a ribbon. Had no idea about this shield bug mentioned.
clever strategy
Sakaguchi, Normura, and the others decided they wanted her as a “minimal spy protagonist.”
That changed later again when Kitase decided to develop a love line between Celes and Locke. So she became her own character with a more prominent role.
Interesting. It's as if Kain had become the final boss of FF4. That would have been something to see.
Yes, it would have! However, I think people kind of disregard Celes. It’s strange because she is essentially Kefka, but in sane form.
@@celes42017 exactly, it’s pretty much stated in game that around when Celes was born, she went through the perfected version of the process Kefka did to be able to use magic, making the two characters connected in that way.
Final Fantasy VI is my favorite Final Fantasy. Yes even over VII

2:24 Sakaguchi = Main characters look alike
Kitase = Tragic Characters
Nomura = Edgy characters
That also seems true for other FF games
eeeehhhhhh.... Nomura is just as guilty of designing characters that all look the same.
I reached this part of the video, paused it, took a guess at the two characters Nomura had. Got a small smile out of me to see I was right. Not that its a triumphant feat by any means, dude's style always has been and always will be this predictable for better or worse.
ZIPPERS AND SNAPS EVERYWHERE!
