In our latest Final Fantasy Evolutions video, we've decided to look at the Blue Mage job class!
As it's just been added into Final Fantasy XIV, this seemed rather apt, but the truth is, the Blue Mage has been a rather interesting job ever since it was first introduced with Final Fantasy V. Numerous characters over the years have either been Blue Mages (like Strago and Quina) or have exhibited traits (like Quistis and Kimahri), but how they've done so has always been rather unique.
With appearances in Final Fantasy VII (Enemy Skill Materia), Final Fantasy XI and now with the Final Fantasy XIV blue mage gameplay showing it to be very faithful interpretation, it means the Blue Mage has been a part of most mainline installments of the franchise since its debut.
We hope you enjoy this Blue Mage Documentary, as we look into how the concept of what a Blue Mage does has evolved over time, with full explanations! :D

In this video, we will be covering different interpretations of the Blue Mage job class including...:
Blue Mage in Final Fantasy V
Strago Lore
Enemy Skill Materia FF7
Quistis Limit Break (Blue Magic FF8)
Quina Blue Magic
Kimahri Overdrive
Blue Mage FFXI
Blue Mage FFXIV
Thank you all so much for joining us on our latest exploration into how concepts have evolved within the Final Fantasy franchise! It was definitely different from the other videos we've done, but it was still thoroughly interesting to dive into the specific nuances of what the job is and how it was carried though. We hope you enjoyed it
This is a great video! I'd love to see something like this for all the traditional jobs :)
Uhhhhhhh it actually 49 spell in the spellbook in final fantasy 14 not 50 but i can see it just a small mistake, so i forgive you guys
Thank you for the informative video Daryl I really love these videos, they're very informative and a great time killer cx
Thx for no skipping FF11/14. :D
Are you thinking of doing the evolution of Cid or Biggs and Wedge coming up?
I always viewed their mask not as a superhero, but as a thief. A magic thief that steals/learns what the enemy does.
Esp in FF5 i used to think those masks were sweet shades
I still like to imagine them as superheroes, but thats a pretty cool observation
Very “Errol Flynn”-esque indeed.
More like chaotic neutral anti heroes.
The masks are not meant to be reminiscent of superheroes, but to be reminiscent of the stock character type of the "Gentleman thief" (as do the rest of the elements of their design) in particular you can see similitudes with the character of El Zorro, from the idea of "Stealing" the enemies abilities to the proeficiency in combat with various weapons and swords, and of course, the use of the mask to cover their identity.
Just a piece of useless info from my part, great video btw!
True......but the sprites make them look like superheroes. (espually bartz.)
Ligma balls
@@mechamobu777 good one
@@keelanbarron928 Yeah the sprites don’t do that good of a job.
I’d say thats more red mage in design.
, feather and all. Infact in ff14 they even get a literal zorro attack, his special z signature sword swipe.
Don't you just love having bad breath even though most of the enemies are immune to status effects
Yeah.. The thing I hate about Final Fantasy is that its monsters and especially bosses are Immune to everything... A interesting Disabler character would be useless.
@@npcvillager8703 I have been playing p5 and the story bosese are inmune to everything too
@@dantegabrieldelosrios1074 It just only makes the Warrior character more Usful
@@npcvillager8703 it only makes dps the only usefull jobs
true.i always saw this as a huge flaw in ff (and jrpgs in general).you accumulate so much cool and varied stuff and abilities but 9/10 times your best bet is to just thwack everything with a sword.they need to come up with a mechanic that would make magic, elements, status and buffs play a more prominent role without being too sluggish ...somebody needs to find this piece of the puzzle that seems to have eluded everybody for 30 years...
Ah, the Blue Mage. The class for intelligent masochists. I have never died more with any other class than with Blu.
Then stop using Final Sting and Self Destruct. : P
You know, that's the most accurate description I have ever seen of a Blue Mage player.
And we liked it, LOVED IT.
So basically Blue Mage are ideal class for Darkness
@@hoseadavit3422 I see you are a man of culture there good sir!
Here's an idea I haven't seen done, Evolution/history of airships. They've had a ton of designs and incarnations! Plus it's highly tied to Cid, can't go wrong there. Or the role of dragons (not Bahamut) in the series. Ricard (technically wyvern) and Rydia could summon one, FFT allowed you to recruit them and Reis was a dragoneer, one guarded the black materia in FF7, and other games used them as high tier enemies. There's a few research projects to keep you busy.
The Red Ace that’s a great idea
Thanks for the suggestion Red Ace! We'll definitely add that to the list for future topics :) ~Darryl
Quina is my favourite blue mage, the whole eating the monster was so unique and so fitting for it. Quina was also quite mysterious....that is what I loved most about FF9, that your team consisted of several different characters of very different races.
Why ff9 is my favorite tied with 7. ESPECIALLY loved quina blu magic
Blue mages are so underrated. And it’s actually my favorite class/job ever. I love the challenge of having to face many different enemies and actually using their skills back at them when the time comes :D
I know this is old but I agree mega

Ahmed Falahy You can’t forget those level spells. Very situational but so fun to use when it hits.
Blue Mages are usually have too many useless skills and very few game breaking ones. Mighty guard and bad breath are amazing.
@@ca8427
It takes serious effort to learn all those spells but it's worth it.
Blue Mages can learn spells that can virtually be very useful in any situation.
@Anonymous Mighty Guard has always been amazing...
Don’t forget some kind of self-destructing move
Blue Mage is such an obvious job to make. "We just made all these cool skills for monster. I wish I could use them to."
Kimahri is my favorite. I like that he's a mashup between Dragoon and Blue Mage.
I was today years old (and *this* is now an old video) when I realized his fur being blue was supposed to be a reference to doubling as a Blue Mage! 🤦 I'd been so focused on the Lancer/Dragoon aspect of his character that I just chalked up his color to "fantasy race character".
"Magic is change, right? When you cast a spell, you are forcing your will onto the way of things.
White Magic tends to introduce order into a system while Black Magic tends to encourage decay. So a thousand years ago, some chucklehead gets the bright idea that if casting magic changes the external world, there ought to be corresponding changes to one's self. A spell's ability to bring change into the world would be incorporated by one's very being.
A Blue Mage wouldn't be burned by a fireball. Its potential for change would instead become a part of him. More than that. It basically grants instant spell cognition as well as immunity to their effects. You'd have a mage who could never be attacked without becoming more powerful. It's a crock."
"Do you know how I knew he wasn't doing Blue Magic? There have been seven documented attempts at actual Blue Magic. Each one met with failure that culminated in an explosion, including the time they finally started using useless non-fatal spells that don't explode.Magic isn't free. There's always a cost.
Of course a legend about unlimited free power would start to circulate. Chemists dreamed of turning lead into gold. Same thing. If there was a way to get magic for free, do you really think I'd have spent so much time sacrificing children to my dark gods? For spells, I mean. Obviously there'd still be sacrifices. A hobby's a hobby."
Best (wrong) explanation of Blue Magic from Black Mage in 8 Bit Theatre.
i loved that comic. glad someone else remembers it too
Thank you so much for that reference
wasnt Blue Magic eventually used in the comic tho? Its been so long since i've read it
@@XeviousvSBlackmanta I think so, yeah. After their Class Changes, Black Mage became a Blue Mage
I really, really love the Blue Mage. The idea of learning monster-techniques is so unique. It´s just kinda sad that the Blue Mage in XIV is 1) so reliant on spamming 1000 needles - Yeah sure, every class has moves that are stronger than the rest, but 1000 needles is kinda getting boring to use - and 2) a limited job. I qould love to use my Blue Mage in the normal, high level raids adjusting my spell list depending on my group.
But besides that, they did a great job at portaying the class. Far better than, for example, Kimahri (I liked his character, but gameplay wise... well, not my cup of tea)
Yep 1000 needles till 50 the get IL 130 then 1000 needles is a dps loss.
at 50, make sure you've grabbed basic instinct and mighty guard then go solo wanderers palace until you pick up sharpened knife, then use faze to stun and enjoy the 450 potency. From the vault, get white and black knights tour then spam black and white to get 400 potency aoe hits. Get rams voice, freeze enemies dead in their tracks. And remember, forming blue mage parties for dungeon spells via party finder is a thing.
In FFT, even though there isn't any Blue Mage, the Ultima spell can only be learned by letting the enemies (who know the spell) cast it on Ramza or Alma. Same with Zodiark summon with the Summoner job class.
Actually, Strago is called Blue Mage in FF6 in the original Japanese script. And "Lore" was a alternative translation decision due to the command slot being only able to accomodate 5 text characters.
Bro! If you do this kind of video for ALL FF Job classes you will BLOW UP! ! I would like to see Sage/Alchemist next please! Subbed!
Quina was such a fun character! I loved him/her. Wish they had more character development, though.
Rabtoons miles their description:
The walking two dimensional fat joke.
My first experience with Blue Mage was in Tactics A2; I loved the appearance/design and getting my enemies abilities was always exciting.
learning “cornered” as a last resort is so satisfying.
EVEN BEFORE I WATCH THIS VIDEO
THIS IS MY FAVORITE JOB CLASS THANK YOU COVERING BLUE MAGES
In FFV I always mastered Blue Mage first because it didn't take much AP (Only 4 levels, highest was 250 AP) and it meant when you switched to Bare for some of the tougher midgame encounters your MP didn't get totally gutted (oh, and you had passive Learning in Bare too). They actually had something like the third highest Magic Power too.
Great, great job.
FFXI is hands down my favorite iteration of the Blue Mage. Like the video author mentioned it had the most lore behind it. They had a defined role in the game world. And it was so much fun to play. Also the job traits were determined by combinations of blue mage spells being equipped. Plus whatever you had for your sub job
Really enjoyed this video, BLU has been a fav of mine for a long time.
One thing - @ 16:30 This makes it sound like you only had to kill the enemy in FFXI for a chance to learn the spell. The mob still had to use it the ability before you killed it.
Hey Wayne, thanks for taking the time to comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for also clarifying that point regarding Final Fantasy XI, the more you know! :) ~Darryl
My favorite version of blue magic was Quina from FF IX. The blue magic in that game was rather useful, and it gave you abilities you couldn't get from the regular magic in that game. Also, it wasn't terribly hard to get. The enemy didn't have to use the spell in question in order for you to get it. You only had to eat the enemy.
This was really good. I hope you do more of these. If you care about suggestions, I'll fit right back into the theme of jobs that started with FFV and just put out there that the Time Mage has always been my jam. Probably because IV was my first Final Fantasy, where they made a really big deal out of the Meteor spell, and Time Mages can just...do that. But a lot of what they do has been utilized by the more common Black and White magic schools, and Time magic even got a nice resurgence from FFXII.
17:38
Holy shit, Blue mage is metal as hell.
My favourite iteration is from FFXI. The mechanic of treating the abilities you acquire like a second equipment list is very interesting. And allows you to tool your Blue Mage to your play style without being OVERLY broken (even though they were Highly powerful in this iteration)
Just to note: Gogo cannot directly mimic enemy attacks in FF6 using their unique Mimic ability, only those of the party members. However, if the party member such as Relm, Strago, or Gau uses an enemy skill, Gogo can mimic that, and Gogo can also be loaded out with Sketch, Control, Lore, and Rage in order to use enemy skills like Relm, Strago, and Gau independently of their party members.
Kimari from ffx is my favorite blue mage as he was my first introduction to the class. Plus he uses a spear any job thay use a spear jumps to the top for me. Its why i love the dragoon so.much.
Way back when I was a big FF fan, Blue Mages were one of my favorite classes. (That my favorite color is blue probably had something to do with it, as did that FF5 masked hero costume). So watching this video has reminded me how much I like their concept: the ability to replicate monster abilities the Blue Mage has experienced.
The most pressing idea on my mind is figuring out how to replicate this idea in my current favorite RPG: Dungeons and Dragons (5e).
It's difficult, because unless I wanted to craft a whole new Class (not gonna happen), I'd need to either make it a subclass to an existing one, or else add it as an option a character could pursue. The two main "theories" that FF seemed to run with, depending on the game, was "Blue Magic as Emulative Sorcery" and "Blue Magic as Personal Monstrosity". The former, I think, could be done in DnD by making subclasses for spellcasters; my current thought being Wizard or Bard (with the Bard channeling a Blue Mage's flamboyant style and ability to emulate many different forms of magic). The latter, meanwhile, might work as a Barbarian subclass (going into Rage gives them the ability to use abilities possessed by monsters encountered), or perhaps as a process whereby consuming or killing monsters gives any character potential boons (as well as banes).
The big issue, of course, is figuring out how to balance monster abilities to a PC, as most such abilities are built around the particular monster of a certain Challenge Rating. It could be done, sure, but it would probably require examining each monster power individually. It's...a daunting prospect, and one I don't relish, even if the idea is tempting.
Another idea I consider is that of an organization within a DnD world - the "Blue Mages" - who run around in blue masks and matching uniforms, hunting and studying monsters. Their intention being to understand how they work, and through observation, dissection, and even consumption try to channel their powers. Each Blue Mage having their own ideas, and methods of approaching it. A Wizard might craft new spells based on observation. A Bard may create songs and artwork that capture the essence of monsters, then bring those effects to life through their performative magic. An alchemist takes samples of monster bodies, and refines them into potions and tinctures that give the body new abilities. Even gourmets, who consume monster flesh, and eking out small effects over time (troll flesh giving temporary health regeneration, mind flayer flesh for minor psionics, a beholder eye soup to enhance vision, etc). A lively bunch of people who seek power, self-improvement, and understanding from monsters.
Another idea you could play around with is using a skill similar to Polymorph. Maybe the Blue Mage PC could gain the ability to transform into a monster they've defeated up to a certain challenge rating, giving them that handy dandy temporary hit point pool and all abilities that the monster has. The ability to channel a monsters form could be limited to once per long rest at lower levels and could climb up to three uses per long rest? (I would think this ability could last an hour like the polymorph spell does.) To break the challenge rating cap, the player could expend two or all three of their uses for the day to transform into a higher rated monster. Or maybe you as the DM could grant the players a potential skill to be learned after defeating an enemy/boss. Maybe with a limited number of skills learned/prepared or something? These ideas could either stack on top of the player class's abilities or become a home-brew sub-class of any class by substituting the normal subclass's skills with these? Idk, just some ideas!
Just do it similar to FFVII if it gets to be too complicated. A simple or powerfully enchanted trinket or object that allows the wearer/user to gain access to enemy-derived attacks and techniques.
If you are doing it in 3.5 you may have to look at the Fleshmage prestige class for sorcerer.
I'd specifically love to see an Evolution video about the summoner class. I feel like they've changed so drastically throughout the course of the series. Love y'alls videos!
If you made a video about every FF class...we would greatly appreciate it :) Can't wait to see more!
i love the blue mage, it's my favorite class in all of final fantasy. the final fantasy d20 system does a great job of bringing this class to life and i really enjoy the version we got in 14. i wish we could get a main character who was a blue mage.
Hmm, I kinda like the idea of being able to eat a monster and learn skills. That sounds like something I see in many fantasy/isekai type manga.
You guys should definitely make more of these! A Dragoon video would be awesome!
I want to point out that in FF10, it's actually explicitly mentioned that a Ronso using Lancet can learn enemy skills (as in many of the early sections, various gameplay mechanics are explained by character during fights), something that other characters cannot do even with the Lancet skill.
FFXIV Blue Mage: 1000 Needles everywhere!
Shhh just try auto-destruction
That is true for leveling, but if you want to beat the Masked Carnival you will need more than that!
Yeah only til about lvl 35 or so. By then the enemies have enough health to offset the ultra long cast time making it not worth using outside of tossing it out with Swiftcast.
Bristle -> Moon Flute -> Off-Guard -> Final Sting
this aged poorly
My fun theory on other practitioners of magic is that they harness and invoke the powers of the various summons in the world. Like if you cast Firaga, you draw power from Ifirit.
Argh, seeing this makes me miss playing FFXI so much. That Blue Mage unlock quest was my favorite of the lot, even if I barely played the job itself.
Every job a 200 hour investment
And worth it
My favorite class! Great vid.
16:36 I think you need to check your facts on this statement because I distinctly remember having to force feed mobs TP in order to get them to proc their ability just to pray they used the one I wanted to learn and then pray harder that I even got to learn it after killing the mob.
thank you bro. Ive been playing ffx and ffxii simultaneously and have been curious about ff's magic systems. your video was awesome
It should be made aware that Blue Mages did end up becoming the top physical damage dealing job in FFXI. After the level cap was raised to 99 and a lot of new monster spells were added, specific spells set granted some incredible passive buffs. Like store tp, attack, haste, etc. On top of that, some of those set abilities themselves were buffs that boosted damage and haste too. And Blu's Mighty Guard here not only boosted defensive stats but also granted attack speed as well. All that coupled with the ilvl 99 gear, there were a lot of multi-hit weapons suddenly made available for each class (occasionally attacks twice-three times etc). So basically, all by themselves Blue Mages in FFXI were able to cap haste, with high store tp, high attack bonus, and while using multi-hit weapons. On top of a 5-hit weapon skill that can skill chain on itself. You would skill chain off your own tp skill non-stop putting out obscene amounts of damage, making other physical damage dealers irrelevant. It has been maybe a year since I played FFXI retail so I'm not sure if they ever made an attempt to balance that.
around the time you stopped playing is when SE added balance changes to Blu. SE initiated a not-so-subtle nerf of having new blu gear be mage focus rather than melee. they are in the same place a year ago, great and easy way for players to reach a good dps stage. but the other melee jobs have gotten much better gear and are now topping the parse
Still a powerful class but not best in terms of raw damage.
BLU has an excellent amount of utility, I haven't geared for it in years but this video makes me want to AG my Almace from like 7 years ago and go spell hunting, lol.
OMG! Rimuru Tempest is a blue mage, now i understand, now all the gates are open...
Blue mages in final fantasy 11 were awesome. They had such great lore and design.
Made me regret leaving the game around that time lol

You might’ve made the right decision. Learning those spells was a huge time sink and could be frustrating. But being able to be a dd, that could off tank, heal and help enfeeble was kind of cool.
Your love for the series is inspiring

blue mage and geomancer are probably the most unique classes in the series
Ah thank you. I'm making a 3.5e homebrew with ff classes. These sorts of videos are soul food for that process.
I never thought much about Blue Mage beforre. Very interesting!

Loved this video and look forward to more like this in the future! I'd love to see a video dedicated to red mages who are truly awesome.
I actually didn't thought about Super Heroes when I first saw the class, first thing it reminded me of instead was Phantom Thief like the one from Detective Conan, Persona 5 and Maplestory had. Cane, Cape, Mask, Blue, and stealing enemy moves all reminded me of Phantom Thief.
Saw both Black, White and blue color theme before, but black and white is already taken so that leaves only Blue which result in Blue Mage? Coincidence with the blue color theme? Maybe, lol 😂
AWESOME video by the way, lol 😂
Gau seems a form of Blue Mage, but Relm fits more of the job class of a hunter, basically capturing the enemy's appearance with her sketches.
Yeah, Gau is more akin to a D&D Druid. While he doesn't take on their forms, he does copy the abilities of creatures he's seen in the Veldt.
@@sabliath9148 Yes, but in the realm of Final Fantasy jobs, the class he most fits into is the Blue Mage.
so was Gau the base for FFTA’s Morpher? he kinda “morphs” into a monster's skillset.
@Wilson Nascimento But what class does Gau fit? Given that he uses enemy skills, and the Blue Mage is known for using enemy skills, Gau would seem to fit the class of a Blue Mage. He's not a Berserker, because Berserkers are known for uncontrollable physical attacks. He doesn't seem to fit the dancer class either, as his skills all generate from watching enemies like a Blue Mage. I am not at all claiming that Strago isn't a Blue Mage, but I am arguing that Gau could equally be described as a Blue Mage of a different type.
@Wilson Nascimento That would imply he's a master at the enemy skills as he's mastered their passive skills as well.
My favorite is in Final Fantasy VII. Sure it was a pain to get Beta early or to not miss out on some Enemy Skills or to have to get it on all 4 materias. But I'm a completionist so I just love it. I love using White Wind, Big Guard, Beta, Aqualung, Trine, and Magic Breath. I also love using Death Sentence on Tifa so her Powersoul weapon can become really powerful
Great video! And the music in the background is amazing!
Just found this channel. Gonna marathon tons of your vids while playing XIV haha
Blue mage is probably my favorite spell casting class. I just think the idea of using enemy attacks is really neat
You should do more videos like this they're calming while geeked.
I didn't realize that FFXI came out during Pokemon Gold, but after seeing that screenshot where a character in FFXI was named "Cyndaquil" after seeing a character in FFXIV called "Squirtle Squad"... :)
Going through FF9, and I love Quina both as a character and in combat. Blue Magic stings hard, and I love using it when I can.
Heck, I’d probably be a Blue Mage if asked what class I’d be.
I love Quina! Frog Drop is so broken with Half MP ability. 5 MP for 9999 damage.
I think my favorite iteration of the Blue Mage was probably in Tactics Advance. I remember my endgame party consisting of a couple of Assassins, a Blue Mage, a Summoner, and probably a couple of other classes, and I would just WRECK people. It was also the first time that I realized how important support classes were, since I was a young'un at the time and focused mostly on just doing as much damage as I could without worrying about status ailments or buffs.
I doubt Strago would have suffered the same fate, afterall he only needed to see the skill, no consuming or even direct killing necessary and as we saw from Gau simply understanding the monsters seems to be enough to utilize their skills in FF6. Same kind of goes for the enemy skill materia or the classic blue mages. It may absorb the ability by getting hit by it, but nothing ever said that the enemy's soul was necessary especially in 5 where you could straight up die and still have learned the ability. And even if that's true in 7 the materia is doing the dirty work, not the person using it.
CatMancer was my top class in Bravely Second. I went around the world and talked to each cat.
I love your evolution of job classes videos!! Please do more!!! Pleaseeee!! Summoner!!!
Quina is the most OP Blue Mage.

Final Fantasy 5 has her beat...you can literally one shot bosses using blue magic
Quina eats you
I'd like to see an evolution of the red mage. That class has always interested me.
I remembered Blue Mage being broken in FF5. A handful of bosses weren't immune to Death Claw or moves that just trivialized them, so they shined especially in the early to midgame.
My favorite class. The concept of learning your enemies abilities is really exciting.
This was amazing! Good job guys
18:26 so that's why those mind flayers were called wizards in FF1.
I discovered the job trough FF Tactics and it quickly became my favorite. So thanks for giving me a reason to play FFV c:
Kind of random to comment on an older video but one my favorite things about Final Fantasy is seeing a new take on jobs with each title. I'd be stoked to see FFXVI with more obscure jobs in different environments, art style, and even in gameplay.
Strago's magic is explained in FFVI. He's descended from the mage knights, who were given magic by the Espers. They passed on their knowledge genetically and so their descendants can be blue mages.
I LOVE these videos. Thank you for your work and sharing your knowledge.
Final Fantasy V and XI are the best iterations of the Blue Mage. V in part for introducing the job, but also letting you learn the abilities while having another job with Learn.
XI just for being a very fun implementation of the job in an MMO setting and giving us actual lore on the origins of the art.
XIV's shaping up to be a very good iteration as well, although the limited nature of XIV's Blue Mage at present makes it less interesting, even if still very fun to mess around with on your own.
My favorite version of Blue Mage is the FFXI version, but there's a small error in your coverage here. You didn't just have to kill the mob to learn the skill you were farming, the monster had at least *attempt* to use the skill in battle, THEN you could kill it. It didn't have to hit you directly and could even do no damage and be resisted completely but the monster had to at least ready it. The problem is every mob in FFXI has a variable skill set and the skills they use are almost always completely random. This meant that you usually had to beat on a monster with a very underpowered weapon to feed it TP and wait for it to use the spell you're hunting. There was also the fact that it was actually HARDER to learn spells from weaker enemies. Basically anything you could solo, decreased your chances of learning the spell, so BLU's could spend an hour or more farming a single spell.
Now as the complete masochist that I am (hey, I played FFXI for 12 years), of course I LOVED the hunt for spells. I found the difficulty make the reward more substantial. But besides finding the spell hunting fun, BLU was just a powerhouse with its ability to solo-skillchain. And in Abyssea it was just broken. And yes, the job has one of the best quest lines in the game with probably the coolest-looking artifact armor in the game.
So the Vampire and Catmancer of Bravely Default and Second are bluemage variants?
Yes, they are both a variant of Blue Mage.
The Vampire class is a pretty standard Blue Mage, but it does have abilities baked in to the class that help it find moves, like Charm to control enemies and Blood Drain as move you are given for free.
The Catmancer class learns the spells like a blue mage, but it uses a beast (cat) to cast the blue magic for you, which you activate by spending items, like catnip, instead of MP. As bonus, if you look up a monster's info any skill that can be learned from them will be highlighted.
Between the two, I liked the vampire more because there is so much history to the class in the game. Unfortunately, it is a late game class.
similarly, beastmaster in bravery default 2 is kinda blue mage - instead of learning the magic yourself and having a handful of distinct magics, each enemy has their own attack you can use by 'capturing' them, and it's sort of like a usable item after that.
some monsters have generic attacks that can at least weakness hunt foes with, though the way the beastmaster skillset is presented, you can't really tell what the hell you're doing without either trial and error or looking up the data, which sucks.
but plenty of monsters have a signature blue mage ish spell you can use.
A) Another brilliant video. As always, I greatly enjoyed my time with your content.
**Spoiler warning for FF6**
B) You asked the question towards the end whether it is possible Strago could have possibly shared the fate of the Blue Mages in FFXI. That the souls of the beasts the Blue Mages consumed could have had the chance to turn him into an inhuman monster after the end of the game. It is possible that this was something that COULD have happened to Strago given time, I think the end of the game saved him from that plausible fate. At the end of Final Fantasy VI, the existence of magic is ended by the destruction of Kefka and the Warring Triad. It is likely that whatever magical energy or souls Strago absorbed from the game's foes faded with the rest of the magical energies. Meaning Strago was spared from the struggle of the Blue Mages in FF11. Just my opinion, though!
Always an odd class but an interesting idea, I think limiting them to solo play in FFXIV is pretty disappointing given how great they look
They would destroy dungeons if they were allowed into them.
White wind is an aoe heal that heals for your current hp.
Ram's voice freezes enemies solid in an aoe for 12 seconds.
Diamondback reduces damage done by 90% for ten seconds and only has a GCD.
And it goes on and on. It's a broken class, but rather than balancing it, which would destroy the point of the class, they keep it limited.
Considering the Video is now some months old and I only found it now but still I was curious if, when Quistis would come up, some images would be used and you did not disappoint.
But, there is a tiny issue when you used them at around the 13:00 mark and maybe you could put in a little info to correct the information to reflect the actual/new one?
@nebezial is not used anymore over at twitter (though I guess it was his old one going by the naming of his patreon and he shows it in his twitter-name) but the artist is available on twitter under @stjepansejic (and frequently posts his Quistis-pictures there ^^)
White wind, mighty guard. The two spells that held the class up.
one thing you did forget to mention in the ffXI iteration is the pairing of blue spells to make job traits which is far more powerful than the spells themselves.

Enjoyable insight~ Fantastic as usual~
Just found your channel, I'm big into Final Fantasy and I'm stoned as fuck. This is super interesting. Big love.
I subscribed after I saw the homage to Bravely default and second 💖
Please, please, please do videos on every class. I loved this.
An interesting related feature was in FFDimensions. It wasn't a class and it didn't involve monsters, but many of the hallmark skills associated with Blue Magic could be gained through the Fusion Ability system. Through equipping the skills of multiple classes and then using one of the skills in the fusion (example: White Mage's Cure + Black Mage's Fire = Magic Bomb) could trigger the character to learn the Fusion.
The good side was that it added some nice skills that could be used regardless of equipped job/skills. The bad side was that it was counter intuitive to guess the combos so it didn't add depth to exploring the job system and didn't add depth to monsters like traditional Blue Mages do.
FFXIV explains all schools of magic, blue included.
solid vid, subbed!
Awesome to see that screenshot from FFXI. The player, Cyndaquil, was in my LS! Old school Cerberus server!
If your gonna do another job evolution video do one on my favorite job the geomancer
So on FFXI you had to see the skill or be in exp range to learn it not just kill the monster since it had to use the skill first
Yep and our blue magic is a monster's weapon skill so we also have too feed it tp to encourage its use.
XI BLU has probably the best iteration and treatment due to the job's specific storyline that runs through the unlock, the artifact armor, and the Lv.75 limit break quests.
FFVII and X are my favorite 2 FF games. I liked the materia and I used it a lot! Khimari was my main favorite character in X, only barely winning over Auron, Lulu, and Tidus, and I loved how he was utilized in-game. His sphere grid and celestial weapons I always managed to get completed in every playthrough.
BLU is the most fun class to play in 14, but if you are hard pressed to find people to skill up in dungeons it can be really tedious, however they level up to 70 extremely fast, i would recommend any new BLU's to find homies to play with before starting this journey.
Always my favorite class, FFXI BLU for life.
Red mage job class exploration next plz?
"But without further ado..."
Was followed by more ado.
FFV was my first ever FF and first ever JRPG so the Blue Mage job made quite an impression on me and to this day I've always been partial to them and their skillset. Can't argue with Mighty Guard!
Wow you've doubled in size in 3 months! Extremely well done! Keep the content coming! Talk about puppetmasters 😆
