    It is extremely important to downsize. I am having a real difficult time with it. I turn 58 next Sunday. I am experiencing side effects now. Arthritis in hips, knees and back. 70% blockage in one artery and difficulty with my cardio in trying to downsize. Years of heavy training, working in machines and doing heavy construction work and 4 accidents on my Harley. But I haven’t given up. I should have focused on it much earlier in my life. The ego really is the enemy.

      No it's not ego it's called being a dedicated warrior something which demonic social media lacks in a lot. Social media is a toxic environment where the hard working are shunned and the lazy and negative are rewarded. But as is the law of the universe this too shall change. Even the mighty empire of Rome fell one day and so shall social media.

    The most important thing to say here is that Hollywood is a lot smaller than we would think. Like in strongman, we need to question the heights they claim they are.🤣 Bautista claims 6ft4 but when you see him with 6ft2 Terry Crews you'd have to question the 6ft4. As I'm a comfortable 133kg at 6ft3 here no reason he would not have been 140kg+ at his heaviest. But a lot of actors are way smaller than you'd think.

    After 40 you should really downsize. True. I hope a lot of people listen to this advice.
    I have been weightlifting for 24 years now. Used to be way heavier than I am now. Today, less heavy weights, more stretching, more cardio, more sensible food. Why? I have kids.
    I still want to be around when they have grown up. Want to be able to help them on their way to adulthood.

    I am 50. I have always loved weightlifting since childhood. I have always been tall 6'5" and thinner than I would like. Through the years I was able to go up and down about 30 pounds naturally. But gaining was extremely hard. I had a some steroid offers in my twenties. But I never had the nerve to do it as much as I wanted to be heavier and thicker. Now at 50 I'm thankful I just ate good and trained consistently. I am very healthy and active, I still go out to my shed and train like a strongman and I love it. I go to the Arnold Classic in Ohio every year. And love watching the strongest men on the planet. And thank them for the motivation and top notch entertainment. And the positive friendly clean vibes they are sending to our youth are so much needed in todays world. I believe if they keep that tone it will only help grow our sport to new heights!!!

    Mitch hooper has talked about this for a little while now about the simple fact that he doesn’t want to be a strongman for an extended period of time simply because he knows how hard and bad his size is for his long term health. It’s a very real thing and should be observed more across all sports. Many sports that call for size have retired athletes that were legends in their respected time and now being smaller they aren’t thought anything less of. I hope some of these retired strongman consider downsizing more because they are knowledgeable in the sport and awesome to listen to.

    I'm 52 and have recently started powerlifting. One has to put on a bit of size in a calorie surplus to put on muscle to lift heavy, especially at my age. I'm trying to manage the surplus / work balance but its difficult. I think an old man with good muscle mass is impressive even with a dad belly.

    I'm not even close to 50, but even at 34 (with 16 years of hard gym lifting behind me), I feel my joints more and more. I've recently taken the decision to downsize from 110kg to 95kg-100kg and I'm hoping that this will allow me to continue hitting the gym for some decades to come.

    • @25johnlowe
      @25johnlowe 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I'm 36 with around 18 years of hard training behind me (so basically just 2 years ahead of you) and I know exactly what you mean.
      When I hit 30 (and also had kids) my recovery just didn't seem to be able to keep up with my training any more. I stupidly didn't really ramp back as just loved going to the gym and ended up with a long term shoulder injury that I suspect will never fully go away. Now 6 years on I still train very hard but it's much more considered now.
      Little niggles that before would just clear up before the next session if left now would become larger ones spanning weeks/months without proper rest/rehab. It's a hard pill to swallow but has to be done.
      This is of course speaking from a natural POV, my bro who is 32 started PED use a year ago after about 12 years of training and his lift numbers/physique has skyrocketed, but at the long term cost I just don't see the upside.
      All the best

      The only thing you suffer from is a chronic case of mediocrity and feeling sorry for yourself and thinking you're old. You're not old. I know men who are 70 and still powerlifting. That's the difference of an average joe and an athlete. Their mindset. And of course superior genetics. That's the downfall of social media. In order to obtain views from negative people you have to have a negative mindset. But I refuse to follow the herd as that's not my cup of tea. ❤

    I don't doubt that downsizing could open up his career to a broader range of roles, but I'd say it's more likely that his reason was health related. He's closer to 60 than 50 at this point and it wouldn't at all be shocking to hear that decades of using *supplements* would be starting to having some negative effects on his organ that he and his doctor no longer deemed to be an acceptable risk for him to take.
    Also, anyone that looks at him now and things he's unhealthy needs to take a step back and view him in the lens of the general public. How many guys in real life do you know that are decently fit at 220 pounds at 6'3"? He's still a big guy to any reasonable degree of scrutiny, but his joints and organs and thankful that he lost weight and dramatically cut back on his *supplement* usage.

    It's not always an ego thing. I'm a natty female and always been bigger. Started competing at 40 and did very well. Every off season dropped 10 kg. But now at 49 the hunger is out of control. Wanting to downsize is not the same as being able to downsize. I'm sure some of the guys feel this too.

    • @kimaboe
      @kimaboe 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It is worth considering that if you're training hard, you need fuel so your body makes you hungry. I managed to lose 50lbs because I decided it was worth putting all the training on hold while I changed my diet, that way there was less of an energy demand that would in turn lead to overeating.
      I've kept that weight off for five years, and don't restrict eating. I did however switch most of my general strength training for cardio. Different goals.

      If you look at the photos of him during this wrestling days and think "that right there looks like a healthy man" you have body dysmorphia, dude. He looks gaunt now, but that is because his skin and face hasn't adapted to his current weight. He has lost the weight quickly and it shows, but I guarantee you that if he stays at this weight he'll live years longer than he would staying at Drax-weight.
