    I think strongman is heading in a more athletic area than it's ever been. It's bringing people in from every area, because of the guys reaching in different areas other than 20K calories. Sorry to ask. I know one of your names, what's the 25 ish fully formed man's name?

      @@SvenAlfred Big Loz is the most active strongman youtube channel and has 150k subs. While Hafthor with a massive language barrier clicks in at 870k subs with very boring content.
      I followed the sport for years before I really started to appreciate the strongman performances outside of the WSM. In the social media world other titles than wsm doesn't really matter.

    Great topic. Very relevant.
    Yes, strongman has definitely entered the realm of science based training and nutrition.
    I always noticed that Big Z appeared to get the best medical treatment and knew how to care for his body.
    I always cringe at Tom’s videos when he shows himself shopping or eating. The crap he puts in his body can’t be helping him, especially long term- Luke too. I don’t know how he manages blood sugar when he eating junk food. He’s young and getting away with it, but can’t be helping him.
    When he said he is running for miles, at 400 lbs , again I cringe. It must be destroying his knees, ankles and back.
    Mitchell, as bright and informed as he is, I think is playing with fire by doing all his attempts at training with other sports athletes.
    He likes to show how balanced is his athleticism is, yet he seems to be pressing his luck regarding over stressing his joints.

      Interestingly, I've read that some cross-training in other sports actually helps reduce overuse injuries (using muscles in a different way I guess). Of course with the caveat that it may be different for elite, elite athletes!

    • @bobz4968
      @bobz4968 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@benjobuensuceso I understand. Mitchell knows more than I do, so take my opinion for what it is. Yet, he doesn’t seem to be cross training as much as do stunts to bring in TH-cam subscribers. He’s young and can likely get away with it, but I think he’s risking his
      lucrative career for clicks and maybe ego satisfaction. Just my opinion. I wish him well.

    The sport of Strongman is for sure evolving rapidly these years.
    Back in the late 1880es, 1890es an early 1900es, strong men being showmen at fairs and theathres, then more or less disappeared for a long time, and then reappearing in the 1980es and 1990es as a slightly more organized version of the vaudeville, but still not standardized in any way.
    And now, with somewhat standardized equipment and rules. Gyms, where athletes can train, coaches, price money in competitions...... all the shananigans that come with "real", recognised sports. Now it makes sense for the athletes to see themselves as athletes, train like athletes of other sports, utilizing every bit of knowledge they can - from their coaches' experience to hard science, from other related/similar sports and everywhere else, you might find that 1 % edge over the others.
    Super relevant and interesting video. Your channel and Big Loz Official complement each other well. Keep up the good work 👍☀️☀️👍👍

    Regarding the shift in body composition, it seems like strongman cyclically moves between what is "optimal" for winning competitions, depending on event choice (e.g. strongman when Pudzianowski was WSM being considered "lighter").
    I'm not sure we can actually really talk about "science", in this case. Given how "freaky", athletes at this top level really are, the fact that they use different methods to achieve results is not that surprising. The word "science", brings connotations of an ability to standardise/do things methodically and uniformly and this is just observably not true. Scientific methods can be brought in, but the training itself can't really be categorised as scientific across the board.
    Even in powerlifting, you have (had) people like Konstantin Konstantinovs doing shit like draining blood into his shaker, training based on phases of the moon, not periodising/planning out their training, versus people like the Sheiko athletes.
    The closest you can get to a standardised method of training in strength is probably something like the Soviet/Chinese Oly-lifting programs, with 10000s of athletes going through systems based on a unified body of research and theories. And even then, you have the Bulgarians being Bulgarians.

      I agree. Top strongmen will, by the very nature of the sport, all be extreme outliers, even more than top athletes in other sports. And for such people, it isn’t likely that a single approach will work for everyone.

    Strongman is in a good place. I've been competing in both powerlifting and now Strongman as a 53yr old. I love it. I do recovery, therapy, walks, why wouldn't you do those things that help? Look at Nick Best and Mark Felix..they are still training and competing and KNOW they're bodies.

    There has definitely been a shift in body types for strongman, almost no one can keep the mass that Brian, Z and Thor could (especially with their longevity like Z and Brian both were that big for well over a decade and Thor would have been had he not retired). I think the current strongmen have recognized that and that the sport is adapting to it rather than the guys bloating up to be incredible for 2-3 years and then just destroying their bodies, more longevity focused now for sure

    • @RubbishGimpy
      @RubbishGimpy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think this fits with heavy lifting too. Every year people complain about strongman shows not being heavy enough quoting Shaw's as the heaviest show to prove who really is the strongest.
      They forget that maybe the strongmen themselves might not want to risk their body by over-lifting. There will become a point when they will say no. Now you can make decent money from strongman, why risk injury for ego.

    First we have to name it properly because Strongman and Powerlifter are wrong in terms of science. See Andy Galpin discuss it with Peter Atia. Here is the cliff notes version in terms of physics. But yes, you are on to something because there are many PhD exercise scientists that use science.
    F x V = Power
    Force x Velocity is Power.
    F=MA
    Force = Mass x Acceleration.

    Almost every sport is taking a more detailed approach, it could be labelled as scientific. Probably Sir David Brailsford is the most celebrated with his marginal gains philosophy. If every single item or process can be improved by just one percent the accumulative effect can be huge.

    Its the internets fault. Instagram, TikTok etc. Everyone wants to look like their favourite influencer. Its marketing, social media is marketing and people have fallen for it.
    The next fad diet, the next super supplements, the next best exercise, all to make you look 'this' good.
    10yrs ago my local gym was almost empty, now its so crowded you cannot get on equipment, 80% are late Millenials, GenZ and 'kids'. Most don't need it, its a trend.
    That trend has filtered into strongman with the advent of 'strongman influencers, pushing the new way to do stuff, recover and train. With marketing comes bias legitimatisation to convince the next simp to do/buy it.

  • @RubbishGimpy

    Lifting is a hobby, it will sadley never be an offical sport, its entertainment like WWE. PED usage disqualifies strongman as a legit sport but this doesn't stop strongmen claiming its a sport and this is where a lot of over thinking happens within strongman. Its the older strongman incorperating techniques from other sports to help with recovery and younger ones marketing it the only way they know but its all to try to convince people their proper athletes from a proper sport and not just fat dudes with low self esteem who did a bit of PE in school, got injured, got fat and lifting is the only thing they can do now. Its to convince themselves that they have still got it. Uncle Rico Syndrome.
    Strongman are a product of the times, placebo or benefit, staying healthier cannot hurt but you don't need sleep pods and cryo chambers.
