Dr. Donald Corenman is one of a handful of individuals that are both an MD and doctor of chiropractic (DC). His practice with the Steadman Clinic in Vail, CO serves the Vail Denver area and patients traveling from the US and abroad seeking resolution for chronic back pain and failed surgical treatment.
This video illustrates isometric neck exercises and around the world neck strengthening exercises.
Expert spine surgeon in Colorado (neckandback.com), Dr. Donald Corenman, MD, is a dedicated spine researcher, lecturer, and physician practicing at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, CO. As a passionate educator of all areas of the spine, Dr. Corenman created neckandback.com for patients, physicians, colleagues and other spine surgeons to use as a 2nd resource when seeking out information on conditions and surgical options relating to the spine.
Dr. Corenman has been a spine surgeon in Colorado for more than 18 years. He consistently diagnoses degenerative conditions in patients, as well as diagnoses and treats sports-related and traumatic injuries of the spine. He recently created this video on isometric neck exercises to better explain how neck strengthening exercises can improve neck movement and flexibility. In particular, the "around the world neck strengthening exercises" can greatly improve the healing process of the neck.
Isometric neck exercises are strengthening maneuvers that can be done soon after neck surgery to continue to tone the muscles. Isometrics pit one muscle against its antagonist (the muscle that performs the exact opposite motion). In this way, there is no motion of the attached vertebral structures (in this case the neck) but the muscles gain the benefit of use to prevent deconditioning. The "around the world neck strengthening exercises" are important in the recovery process following surgery.
There are 4 directions of neck motion: forward (flexion), backwards (extension), lateral bending to the left and to the right. If you place your hand against your head and push with equal strength your head against your hand and vice versa, there is muscle contraction of the neck but no neck motion. If you do this in the 4 compass directions around your head-you have effectively completed "around the world neck strengthening exercises."
Dr. Corenman has other educational videos similar to this one on isometric neck exercises on the neckandback You Tube channel. He is a dedicated spine surgeon in Colorado and is happy to share his images and presentations for further research.

Since people ask Dr. Corenman questions in so many different places online, he set up a forum so that he can manage them efficiently in addition to see patients, performing surgery, conducting his research and lecturing. He personally answers all questions posted in AskSpineDoc (dot) com. For a quick reply, please post your message there. He is very committed to helping people understand their spines, but occasionally we miss the alerts on question asked elsewhere.

Sir, I am suffering from DDD at C4-C5. My doctor has advised me to do isometric exercises.
I want to ask if more pressure can do any harm. I use both my hands to get a firm grip of hands and also it increases the pressure.
It feels good after doing the exercise but does more pressure do any harm?
