I have been suffering neck and shoulder pain for weeks, affecting my whole life and restricting what I can do. I have a ultrasound booked, and am waiting for an MRI, but this video has given me so much relief from the constant pain and restriction I've been feeling, and it will be a daily companion until I manage to get it sorted out. Thank you!
Hey doctorjo! This video is just your most recent, not one relating to the crippling back pain that ive been dealing with for years, but i just wanted to say, THANK YOU! Your videos are some of the best out there, you explain things perfectly, and they are entertaining as well. You have good humor and good personality. You are helping me and many others im sure. THANK YOU
Dr. Jo, thanks so much for this video. I learned the hard way that there are no quick fixes on TH-cam to nerve issues emanating from the spinal cord; I know because I tried them, much to my detriment. Using your video (and only your video), I have spent the past six weeks slowly working my way to recovery. Slow but steady will win the race.
Did u ever get completely pain free? I’ve tried everything and it’s taking over my life. What worked for you? Was it this video and consistency? I look forward to you reaching back to me 🙏. I’ve tried physical therapy chiropractors and everything.
I am so very thankful for you making this video. I had an MRI and it showed I had C3,4,5,6 and 7 herniated. I've gone to the chiropractor and decompression works but I'm charged out of pocket 100$ for six minutes. Also, acupuncture worked for about eight months. I need some relief. This is going on since August of 2017 and it's painful all the time. Thank you, thank you.
Omg me too since 2019. It’s insane. The amount of money I’ve spent also. Im in Ireland and a few years ago my doctor put me on public waiting list and it came up and so I am free now but still takes time. Just grateful that it is free to be honest. I’ve changed jobs, I’ve adjusted my life (without sounding over dramatic) but every day tasks I’ve altered because of this. Down both arms too right out to my 3,4,5 fingers not just neck. Hope you find help ❤
YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER!!! IVE BEEN DIEIN FOR 3 MONTHS STRAIGHT!!! COULDN'T LAY DOWN WITHOUT GETTING HEADACHES, PAIN WAS NON STOP CONSTANTLY HURTING!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
They way you explain things really helps me understand the stretch. Plus you talk to us like an adult and equal. Not many professionals do that. Your shirts are awesome to.
I've been dealing with cervical radiculopathy pain caused by a herniated disc for the last 6 weeks. I've gone to PT and acupuncture but nothing seemed to help. I'm so grateful for this video. I've finally turned a corner in my recovery after doing these exercises for just a few days. I was doing chin tucks in PT but felt they were only aggravating the herniation. What I found is if I do the isometric exercises first, I am able to do the chin tuck afterwards without pain. The isometric holds helps me to warm up and better target the muscles in my neck. Thank you so much for this video!
You have been so helpful, I have so many of your videos saved. I have fibromyalgia and pain is an issue, plus an injury as a teenager ( so doing stretches helps) thank you for taking time to explain how to do them!!
Thank you so much for posting this! I tried this out tonight and felt so much better immediately after. Will definitely be incorporating this into my routine. Love your style and guidance as well. Cheers!
I’ve found that if I do the isometric exercises first, I can do the chin tucks pain free. Once those muscles are targeted and warmed up, the chin tucks become easier.
Hello! Recently came across your videos, which were helpful for me and a sibling, who also struggled with neck problems. Thank you for making these easy-to-follow-along instructional videos!

This is a great video, with the neck strengthening exercises, is there a way to use weights so I can better see progress? I think that would standardize better than hand preassure.
Thanks. Yes, I have specific neck strengthening videos with bands. You can find all my videos on my channel: th-cam.com/users/askdoctorjo, and you can use the search tool (the magnifying glass) under the banner on the right side to find specific videos/topics.
Hi Doctor Jo. I am doing this for the first time. Recently had a herniated disc and radiculopathy has followed. Even the first chin exercises are absolute agony to do. Shall I just continue with it?
Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different. If there is any way you can see a physical therapist in person, they should be able to help you figure out a specific program for you and help answer your questions.
Great video! I'll give it a try, as I'm having horrible CR pain currently. Yes, am soon to start 6 weeks of PT. Question: what is the best way to lay your head while sleeping with CR?
Thanks. Having your head/neck in a neutral position is best. I have some videos for sleeping positions as well. You can find all my videos on my channel: th-cam.com/users/askdoctorjo, and you can use the search tool (the magnifying glass) under the banner on the right side to find specific videos/topics.
Hi, thank you for this. I purchased the worksheets which I'm printing out and leaving at my work desk. A quick question on the nerve glide exercise. I note that you suggest people go easy on them. I get pain in my thumbs from a pinched cervical nerve, is a level of pain acceptable when doing this exercise? it aggravates it a little, probably a 2 or 3 out of 10. Is that 'generally' expected?
I recently had an MRI. It showed degeneration and different degrees of bulging and herniation in my C1-C7 discs. I also have spinal stenosis in the whole spine, worst at C6-C7 (also cervical radiculopathy there) and bone spurs in C2. Will this help with any of that?
can the symptoms of this just be a quick somewhat subtle pin and needle prick in the palm? or pins and needles? and also cause buzzing and pulsating in feet/pelvic?
i have the feeling of something pinched and painful tense spot on my right side of neck and shoulder it radiates shooting pain into my head everytime i move my head a certain way for 5 months now daily
I have been walking around with my head hanging down because it is so painful to lift my head 😢this pain has changed my daily life way to much I feel completely useless how soon should I see improvement? If I do these exercises daily

I shattered my humorous in my left shoulder and I'm in extreme pain when I lay down at night. I now have a metal plate in my left shoulder. And it's hasn't given me much flexibility to move my arm up over my head out. I have difficulty putting my hair in a ponytail. My arm won't reach. Also have problems with my neck. Should I ask my doctor if I should go to therapy? What happened Is I had put a rug down in my hallway and was walking out tripped over and when I fell my arm went almost all the way over my head I landed on the couch arm. I had surgery July 29th 2022. Most painful experience. And the doctor had no bedside manner. The pain was like no other 😢. But, can this help me? Never got therapy....
Very curious - do you know if cervical radiculapothy and inflammation can happen as a result of hormone shifts? I’ve had neck, shoulder, upper back issues for a few years and my neck seems to inflame every few weeks, usually as PMS is approaching. I don’t exactly know what the swelling is from - I was diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease and had mono at the same time - do you ever see radiculapothy as a result of illness?
It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.

Dr. Jo, how long should it generally take doing these exercises/movements to see a reduction in the radiculopathy? Weeks, months?
It really just depends on how severe it is and how your body reacts to treatment. Everyone is different. Sometimes it's a few weeks or a few months.

My radiculopathy is in my left arm. Is it normal when first starting to do chin tucks that the chin tucks trigger the radiculopathy?

Great video! The chin tuck really triggers the pain in the upper pec, under arm pit down the inside of my bicep and into my hand. Is that normal?
Thanks! No, there shouldn't be pain with the chin tuck. It might be worth trying it against a wall or tall chair so it's an isometric movement.

It's possible. Imbalances in hormones can cause things like neuropathy or other nerve type pain/issues.
