- Cervical radiculopathy, aka a pinched nerve in the neck, is basically when the nerve coming out of the spine gets irritated at the nerve root. This can cause pain & weakness going down into the arm. These simple stretches & exercises may help relieve the pain. Chin tucks and double chin tucks (for the deep flexor muscles) are a great way to not only stretch the cervical or neck muscles, but also strengthen them as well. These can help reset the muscles for better posture as well.
Isometric exercises like cervical sidebend and cervical rotation help strengthen the neck muscles without making big movements that can often cause pain.
Cervical rotation to the opposite side does a great job of opening up the spaces where the nerves come out to take pressure off the nerves. SNAGs stretching does a great job of this as well.
Shoulder squeezes are another great exercise to help improve your posture which can help take pressure of the cervical spine that might be causing a pinched nerve.
Finally, a modified nerve glide can help free up the nerve and improve circulation to get rid of the inflammation around the nerve root.

Thank you for your support!
helped me so much. Finally got rid of weeks long pain
Thank you Dr. Jo. This is exactly what I needed!
My neck pain tends to ebb and flow. Unfortunately, it's been in the flow stage lately. I was looking for a "refresher course" on the exercises I did in PT, so the TH-cam gods brought me to you. It would be nice to avoid (or at least delay) another surgery if at all possible.
And BTW, your sweet pup looks like a wise old soul. It warms my heart to see the loving bond you both share. I have a senior dog too, and he's my pride and joy! Underneath his distinguished "older gentleman" facade, he's still my mischievous, playful puppy who can hear the C-H-E-E-S-E drawer opening from a mile away. Animal lovers are my kind of people. I personally find them to be more empathetic and trustworthy than people who dislike animals.
You're welcome, and thanks! Kali says, woof (hi) 🐾 Please give your sweet pup some ear scritches for me 😎
Hey doctorjo! This video is just your most recent, not one relating to the crippling back pain that ive been dealing with for years, but i just wanted to say, THANK YOU! Your videos are some of the best out there, you explain things perfectly, and they are entertaining as well. You have good humor and good personality. You are helping me and many others im sure. THANK YOU
You're welcome, and thanks!
They way you explain things really helps me understand the stretch. Plus you talk to us like an adult and equal. Not many professionals do that. Your shirts are awesome to.
Thanks!
Hello! Recently came across your videos, which were helpful for me and a sibling, who also struggled with neck problems. Thank you for making these easy-to-follow-along instructional videos!
You're welcome!
Great video!!! Great stretches!!! So helpful and relieving!!! 👏❤️
Thanks!
You have been so helpful, I have so many of your videos saved. I have fibromyalgia and pain is an issue, plus an injury as a teenager ( so doing stretches helps) thank you for taking time to explain how to do them!!
You're welcome!
I have been dealing with this pain for days on end. This video actually super helped reduce my symptoms
I'm glad it helped.
Thanks dr jo your exercises are truly helpful
i always recommend my patients to see your youtube
thanks again
🙏🇳🇵
You're welcome, and thanks!
Dr. Jo, thanks so much for this video. I learned the hard way that there are no quick fixes on TH-cam to nerve issues emanating from the spinal cord; I know because I tried them, much to my detriment. Using your video (and only your video), I have spent the past six weeks slowly working my way to recovery. Slow but steady will win the race.
You're welcome. I'm glad it's helping.
Thanks to you! Your work is for the people!
You're welcome!
That last one wow had slight tingle but it does go away once arm is down. I just got the diagnosis today. Heres to getting it better.
I am so very thankful for you making this video. I had an MRI and it showed I had C3,4,5,6 and 7 herniated. I've gone to the chiropractor and decompression works but I'm charged out of pocket 100$ for six minutes. Also, acupuncture worked for about eight months. I need some relief. This is going on since August of 2017 and it's painful all the time. Thank you, thank you.
You're welcome. I hope these help.
Omg me too since 2019. It’s insane. The amount of money I’ve spent also. Im in Ireland and a few years ago my doctor put me on public waiting list and it came up and so I am free now but still takes time. Just grateful that it is free to be honest. I’ve changed jobs, I’ve adjusted my life (without sounding over dramatic) but every day tasks I’ve altered because of this. Down both arms too right out to my 3,4,5 fingers not just neck. Hope you find help ❤
6 years?! My gosh! I've had C7 for just a month and it's maddening.
Thanks, DoctorJo. I went to a physical therapist and these are the exercises I was shown. Glad I found your videos, great refresher for me Thanks Doc!
You're welcome!

I have been suffering neck and shoulder pain for weeks, affecting my whole life and restricting what I can do. I have a ultrasound booked, and am waiting for an MRI, but this video has given me so much relief from the constant pain and restriction I've been feeling, and it will be a daily companion until I manage to get it sorted out. Thank you!
You're welcome, and thank you for your support! I'm glad it's helping.

Anyone what get shooting pain when you try to tuck your chin?
Hi Dr Jo. I woke up 3 days ago with debilitating neck/right arm pain. Tried 2 days of heat and ice and muscle rub with no success. So I went to urgent care and they told me I had CR. I have a history of joint problems (have had a posterior laminectomy with fusion in my lower spine, I have arthritis in my spine and both hips, and 58 degree scoliosis) but to have this additional problem has really bothered me. So I will try these exercises and see how they go, along with the meds I was prescribed. It is such debilitating pain when it hits, so I am keen to get it better asap.
I hope it helps.
I was trying to understand why I have this pain in my left arm when I move my neck!, then I noticed because of the slipped disc I have. I found this video at work and I did these exercises with you and I really feel better. Amazing stuff thanks
You're welcome.
Is shortness of breath also the symptom?
can the symptoms of this just be a quick somewhat subtle pin and needle prick in the palm? or pins and needles? and also cause buzzing and pulsating in feet/pelvic?
I recently had an MRI. It showed degeneration and different degrees of bulging and herniation in my C1-C7 discs. I also have spinal stenosis in the whole spine, worst at C6-C7 (also cervical radiculopathy there) and bone spurs in C2. Will this help with any of that?
Is it suitable for approaching the vertebrae of the neck?
Hello! Just wondering is lifting weights in the gym but at lower weight, a no no for cervical radiculopathy?
Thank you for this video. Really helpful.
I had a question, does cervical radiculopathy cause throat and ear discomfort/pain?
You're welcome. It really just depends on what nerves are affected.
Right Arm lower than Left
Neck Pain Radiating to Left Arm
pulsations in body
Head Jerks Suddenly(rarely)
Dizziness(When Eyes Closed During Sitting)
Awesome She-Ra shirt and thank you for another great video!
Thanks, and you're welcome!
Hi Doctor Jo. I am doing this for the first time. Recently had a herniated disc and radiculopathy has followed. Even the first chin exercises are absolute agony to do. Shall I just continue with it?
Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different. If there is any way you can see a physical therapist in person, they should be able to help you figure out a specific program for you and help answer your questions.
Great video! The chin tuck really triggers the pain in the upper pec, under arm pit down the inside of my bicep and into my hand. Is that normal?
Thanks! No, there shouldn't be pain with the chin tuck. It might be worth trying it against a wall or tall chair so it's an isometric movement.
i have the feeling of something pinched and painful tense spot on my right side of neck and shoulder it radiates shooting pain into my head everytime i move my head a certain way for 5 months now daily
Question what causes the inflammation??
Hey do you have a tens machine playlist can't find one
I do: th-cam.com/play/PLPS8D21t0eO85o7c7T70bhsoptFdzZM-6.html
Very curious - do you know if cervical radiculapothy and inflammation can happen as a result of hormone shifts? I’ve had neck, shoulder, upper back issues for a few years and my neck seems to inflame every few weeks, usually as PMS is approaching. I don’t exactly know what the swelling is from - I was diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease and had mono at the same time - do you ever see radiculapothy as a result of illness?
It's possible. Imbalances in hormones can cause things like neuropathy or other nerve type pain/issues.
What nerve are u gliding?
I shattered my humorous in my left shoulder and I'm in extreme pain when I lay down at night. I now have a metal plate in my left shoulder. And it's hasn't given me much flexibility to move my arm up over my head out. I have difficulty putting my hair in a ponytail. My arm won't reach. Also have problems with my neck. Should I ask my doctor if I should go to therapy? What happened Is I had put a rug down in my hallway and was walking out tripped over and when I fell my arm went almost all the way over my head I landed on the couch arm. I had surgery July 29th 2022. Most painful experience. And the doctor had no bedside manner. The pain was like no other 😢. But, can this help me? Never got therapy....
It's definitely worth talking to your doctor about physical therapy.
Can a C6 / C7 radiculopathy cause both scapular pain and hand numbness?
It's possible.
The chin tuck should be called a whoa tuck... because thats the movement you'd do when saying whoa... lol
😂
How many times a day do you do these?❤
It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.
Also bone spurs can cause this
its wierd how im in pain for couple days then a new vid rolls out
