They're adults looking for cooperative efforts and creative associates, not teenagers chasing clout looking for dramas. It's a solid foundation for long-lasting partnership. Surprisingly they each have their own unique personality ranging from calculated experimental addict to menace of society, yet their interaction is never dull
@@aulvinduergard9952As I'm constantly telling my kid, being mature doesn't mean being serious all the time. It means being able to recognize when you actually need to be serious. Take your work seriously, but don't take yourself too seriously.
Honestly that’s what I love about it!! If I want something that I can get into the drama I watch mumbo and grian. If I want something more laid back I watch the one girl with the pink outfit who’s super nice and symmetry
One thing i should add here: the Hermits also do an incredible amount for charity, regularly hosting charity streams, Most Recent was for Gamers Outreach where it wasnt just Minecraft, Zedaph and Tango did a Clumsy cooking section that was entirely hilarious to watch. These kinds of things show that they're just as good friends offline as online
Not to mention the fact that this is run by Scar, who is insanely supported by his friends, even ignoring his disability in a way that is so refreshing. I can see someone playing Minecraft in a wheelchair with a feeding tube and oxygen and his friends never once make jokes at his expense with his disability. They are kind and thoughtful and even when there is a bit that goes too far (the mending book in the prismarine permit trade), there is a resolution that they trust their viewers to see.
Not to mention that Tango when he went on vacation with his family recently literally went to visit Zedaph and his GF across the pond. That tells you how much these dudes are actually friends.
You also didn't mention the Recap, a show by fans for fans which really helps fans keep up on events they would have otherwise not had time for! It's a life saver
I love that show! There's so many Hermits it's hard to keep up with all the shenanigans, but that's where Recaps comes in. Without recaps I would never have known about Docm77 - who's now one of my favorites!
@@mr.tophat6592 pretty sure there was more than 3 lol, judging by things Grain was saying. That was definitely one of my favorite parts of that whole thing XD the sheer dedication to the bit was really something
Honestly what makes Hermitcraft and the Life Series so great is threefold A. They don't drag on and on and on B. They're just a bunch of people goofing around and making silly little projects together C. They're all on the same server, so a 10 second cameo in one persons episode is just a moment in a whole other persons entire episode
Lol as you mentioned threefold, my mind immediatly went to a channel with the exact same name. It isn't relatable to HC at all, really the only thing is one Etho's comment on one of Three's videos. Idk, that man has interesting content and a great modded mc community.
I got burned out trying to do that and still haven't watched a new episode since Decked out 2 😭😭😭 Maybe I should only focus on my absolute favourite Hermits but even that is like 6 people, Etho, Doc, Bdubs, Grain, Mumbo, Ren. Oh and Scar, so 7 actually, and I also love all the others Episodes Aswell, Tango, Pearl and many more. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I discovered Hermitcraft a three years ago after watching a building tutorial by Grian. I then got my husband into it (he's never even played Minecraft). We're both in our late 40's. Once, when our daughter and son-in-law were visiting, we had them watch an episode, and they were hooked. A few years ago, we dropped all cable and streaming services since we really didn't watch much there. Hermitcraft is one of our top sources of entertainment. I love that it's family friendly but can still hold an adult audience.
I discovered Hermitcraft by watching tutorial videos of Mumble. Got curious about his Hermitcraft and clicked on Ep. 1 of Season 7. And I as hooked. I mentioned his and Grian's videos to my sister. She decided to give it a try and was soon hooked too. Soon followed by her daughter. For Christmas, I gave them Limited Life T-shirts which they loved. We all are BIG fans.
Wouldn't it be cool? Like switching to a totally different perspective for the same events? You can pick and choose when you want to see the villains planning
@@eduardpeeterlemming Netflix has done some interactive shows before if I'm not mistaken, so it definitely seems possible. Though, as far as I'm aware, Netflix hasn't done anything to that scale, either. At least not yet.
I know there's a mystery show called "Afterparty" where each episode is from a different character's perspective. That might be the closest you can get as of now.
That sounds cool in theory, but I do think that TH-cam videos are in a very unique space where they're really the only format that could possibly work like that without just the most insane budget or some really bad writing
Grian isn't good at redstone right? He understands the basics and a little bit more and can easily follow tutorials but he's nowhere near as good as mumbo or doc
@@Zejoant I'd actually say that he's a bit beyond that now. he also can modify farm redstone a bit without destroying them completely, which is a massive step forward for Griankind.
Im 60 years old , I watch the hermits , mainly doc , tango , SV , and mumbo , I like the crazy redstone builds , tango and doc especialy , they are the only minecraft I watch , been watching since season 5 , it is great entertainment for me who will never be able to understand redstone the way they do
I think the best part about hermitcraft is how unserious and collaborative it is. Every other popular SMP out there tends to over-script the events that happen and try to make everything seem as serious and emotional as possible, in a way where smaller creators have nothing to post unless there's a big plot event going on. I think most viewers who like Hermitcraft wouldn't enjoy the linear, sometimes over-engineered nature of series like the Dream SMP, especially since most of these shows tend to post more un-edited videos, or have very occasional uploads with an already limited cast of players, some of which don't even post videos. I like Hermitcraft because the creators there are having honest fun and allowing every other player to do so as well, while showing most of the process that would normally be cut out of a video. It builds a sense of family and shows off what healthy player-to-player and creator-to-viewer interactions should look like, in a way I don't often see in these collaborative gaming events.
as someone who was shown the Dream SMP but did not enjoy it very much, and found the super serious roleplay kind of off-putting, I found Hermitcraft extremely refreshing
A lot of folks can’t understand why anyone would watch a video of someone else playing a video game. Comparing it to watching someone else play sports is a great analogy. For some it’s the community, for others it’s seeing how far the limits of the game can be pushed, and yet for others it’s the personalities of the creators… or more likely for most it’s a combination of all of those things.
Another mention for why HC works so well, the personalities/Hermits themselves: You mentioned a lot about Grian and Mumbo, their own quirkiness as friends and creating chaos, but even beyond them, all of them have different vibes which us as fans get something different with each. Skizz, one of the new Hermits, is self admitted "Not quite as good at the game." But he's got this infectious personality and is able to get along with everyone and create great collaborative efforts and that's made his videos fun and it's nice to see him getting better. Geminitay is basically like the server's younger sister. One second creating a chill vibe with her builds, the next bothering someone else or being chaotic. Then Pearl is naturally silly, but her content also can be very relaxing. Then Zedaph, he's curious George as a Minecrafter with massive creativity not in builds, but just wanting to do the most wacky and insane thing. Then add the point you mentioned about each of them having their own skills in the game. We have Redstone users, builders, terraformers, PvPers like Joel and False, Zed being Zed. It's just a fun community of friends on a server which creates something different from a Minecraft series. There also have been other SMPs which do have similar vibes. Empires when it was around (Oddly enough with some Hermits/a lot of friends of Hermits and they did the crossover) having the personalities mixed with a Roleplay aspect. A number of SMPs over the years do have a similar environment. But Hermitcraft is the longest running for a reason. I guess I agree with Mumbo agreeing!
Great video. Another way to answer "What is Hermitcraft": "It's like one great, big, dysfunctional family." ~ TFC (How he describes it to Grian at the start of season 6)
Great video, couldn't agree more!! To me hermitcraft is about creativity. It could be building beautiful and intricate bases, creating complex machines, designing games, creating music, improv, storytelling, filmmaking, writing... the list goes on. Every hermit get to shine in their respective areas of expertise all while they showcase their creative process and learn from each other, and I think that's super cool. also hi, i got jumpscared seeing my animation here lol
Hey, it's the animator themself! Nice seeing you here! And yeah, creativity is a big part of it, it's a super unique format with a lot of funny people. Also, it's crazy that I'm getting big enough that the TH-camrs I mention are showing up in my comments section...
yeah Hermitcraft Recaps helps a lot with getting to know what the other hermits you haven't been watching were up to. Plus it can fill you in on some of the events that were only mentioned by certain hermits but are important for understanding the current happenings. It's also great if you missed a week or two as their bite sized videos very succinctly sums up what each hermit did, including the jokes and even adding in their own jokes and some from the wider community as a whole too.
I know most people only watch a few Hermits or just one. But it baffles me how they manage to keep to that. Because as you point out. Crossovers happen. I started watching Mumbo in Season 7. Then; when the HCBBS happened and he swapped bases with Scar, I got to see Scar’s insane bases and was like, “Damn this guy is amazing! I gotta check out his videos.” And by the end of Season 7 I was watching both Mumbo and Scar. When Season 8 started I stumbled on the Hermitcraft Recap, which allowed me to dip my toes into others. Since I only started watching halfway through Season 7, so I still felt new to the fandom, when Pearl and Gem joined, I decided to give Gem a go to support her as a new member and loved her content. I also remembered Iskall being really fun with Mumbo and Pacific in Season 7 so checked him out. And when Mumbo and Scar were in Boatem I ended checking out Grian. And by the end of Season 8, I was watching 7 different Hermits. This snowballed more in Season 9 where over the course of the season I saw more and more people do amazing cool stuff and by the end of it I was watching 18 of the different members. With Zedaph being the first one I added in Season 9 and Hypno being the last. Now in Season 10, I was already subscribed to and actively watching Skizz and Joel, so that bumped the number up to 20 Hermits. And I have started watching WelsKnight as well who I am fervently enjoying. So I am up to 21 Hermits. And that is only after being in the fandom since Mumbo’s Season 7 Episode 54. I am no artist in the fandom. But I have written some fanfiction, the first was from the POV of Impulse, the second from the POV of Skizz, then Joel, then Tango, then Joe Hills, then Iskall. The next chapter I plan on uploading is from the POV of Wels. So I’m deep enough in the fandom to be writing fanfics from many different Hermit’s perspectives.
Slowly gathering more and more hermits in your youtube subscriptions is so real though. I only started watching hermitcraft this season (season 10 if anyone from the future finds this comment) but I've already went from just watching Grian to watching him as well Gem, Pearl, Joel, Mumbo, Scar, and recently Bdubs. I've been considering watching Iskall and Doc too, though the length of Doc’s videos have been intimidating to me to say the least, lol. Outside of hermits, there've been quite a few people who’s videos I’ve found and started watching because of my interest in hermitcraft, too, like Jimmy (Solidarity), LDShadowLady, and tons of fan animators
@@freshcupofangst If there is someone outside of Hermitcraft I recommend watching, I feel like the two people who fit the Hermitcraft vibe most but who aren’t in it are MythicalSausage and Pixlriffs. Both of whom I’ve been watching for a couple years now. And if you know Jimmy and Lizzie I’m sure you’ll have seen them a bit.
I started watching Pixlriffs survival guide, then watched his empires series, noticed Jimmy, started watching jimmy’s empires, then watched Jimmy in the life series, then watched mumbo and grian in the life series, and finally stumbled across hermitcraft where I now regularly watch grian and zedaph
It definitely snowballs. In S8, I started off with Mumbo and was watching 10+ by the end. Im just coming back now to watch S9-10 but have another fandom i keep up with, Hololive. Its gona be hard picking just a few Hermits to follow.
I only started watching hermitcraft this season because I found Lizzie's Secret Life a few months after it ended, then went back and watched more of her content, started watching Joel and Jimmy, then Grian and eventually watched bits and pieces of Grians older seasons of Hermitcraft. I'd been watching all of them for a few months when the first episode of season 10 came out and I watched it from Grian and Joel's perspective now I always watch their new episodes but sometimes I'll also watch Skizz, Impulse, Gem, Pearl, Scar and Iskall! I love the Hermitcraft world and eventually plan to go back and watch more of the past seasons!
It being family friendly is one of the biggest reasons I love it. They don’t go for shock value through cursing or being lewd, it’s just wholesome people goofing around. It’s such a good series because of the people in it. I know getting attached to celebrities can be a slippery slope nowadays but I genuinely think most if not all the hermits are good people. And that’s what makes it so good.
I love hermitcraft because of all these reasons but it also reminds me of being back in highschool in my entertainment design class and graphic design class. Where everyone was working on their projects but it was a learning space where you could look at everyone’s work and improve your own as well. Builders like Bdubs, Pearl, Gem, Keralis and Grian have brought the true artistry hidden within the game, out of the game; and have each shown the other hermits and then in turn their audiences how to build better or make different type of redstone contraptions that they couldn’t have done before!! Minecraft is a great virtual world to interact with your friends from a distance and be creative but also explore, adventure, and my favorite is when we learn :)
7:55 I think the fact the hermits seem to be such genuine friends is why it’s so much better than other smps like Dream SMP. It never feels like there’s any actual animosity or problems between anyone. They all clearly respect each other and the effort everyone puts in and they never make overly destructive pranks like on other smps. It’s refreshing to see a group of friends that just genuinely are just having fun together and not necessarily trying to make any grand storylines.
I also think it is important to mention how important it is to have seasons which makes sure it never get's stale, allows the members to focus on the new additions to the game, and once again built new mega bases.
"most people only watch 1-3 different hermits" me whose autistic special interest is hermitcraft regularly watching 15 a week and trying to catch up on the rest too 😭
Another great thing about Hermitcraft that I found particularly great is that you don't have to watch the previous seasons to understand the current one. Some hermits reference stuff that they've done in previous seasons, but they know that they get new people at the beginning of the season. And if you happen to run out of content for the current season, or just want to watch some older Minecraft gameplay, you can just go back and watch any season
Adult here. Love Hermitcraft. They got me through the pandemic (caring for seniors). Really proud to be part of this community too - amazing fundraising events!
great video, well said on every point. i'm 41 years old, and still love Minecraft (despite not actually playing much of it myself these days), so i watch basically every Mumbo video, and some others scattered throughout. i'd also like to tack on the whole crossover they did with Empires SMP, which is another similarly entertaining series. not to mention Grian's whole "Life Series" of short one-off SMPs featuring basically everyone from Hermitcraft and Empires over the course of all of them.
Being able to switch 'main characters' is why i love minecraft streaming events. You can literally change perspectives live and be at the same point in the 'show'. Rats smp was the first smp that I watched like this and I LOVED it
What an efficient video! You did a great job explaining the appeal of Hermitcraft. I keep seeing people talking about Minecraft TH-cam being dead-be it because people lose interest in certain personalities or because of all the canceling-but I can’t help rolling my eyes. Like, Hermitcraft is right here, going strong consistently.
I still remember watch Grian and Mumbo's perspectives when the button became a thing, and in Typical Grian Fashion he turned them into INFINITY STONES AND SNAPPED ALL THE DOOR AWAY. Grian went from "Here's how to be a better builder" to an agent of cinematic chaos and its so much fun.
I remember one of the best moments in Season 6, when I first started watching, was when Grian, my main perspective, started interacting with Joe Hills, and I found Joe's humor incredibly amazing. Then I tuned into what might have been one of the best collabs ever, between Joe and Cleo. Everyone was starting to prank everyone else more aggressively, and Joe opens his video with his regular opening, then finishes with the line "Cleo, you woke me up early enough to go to the airport, so come to your base, what's going on?" Cleo responds "I need someone to make it weird, and that's always you." Joe proceeded to build the "Hall of Atonement", which might have been the funniest episode I've ever watched. Then, half way in the middle of the episode, Joe says he's edited all the worst bits of the building process to his video, and he left the best jokes for Zombie Cleo to put in her video. Indeed, I went on and watched the exact same video, from Cleo's perspective, and got a completely different experience. I think that was the moment I fell in love with Hermitcraft. The video is Joe Hills "ImpulseSV's Hall of Atonement build process with ZombieCleo - Hermitcraft 6 ep 53".
Oh man, I'm rewatching that video, and I forgot how good the jokes are. Cleo says "Come look at this sign", and Joe says "I'm literate". It's just the sort of perfect stupid humor I love. Joe goes on this long rant about the history of internet memes, and they both keep burning themselves on a random magma block Joe placed down, and Joe says something like "This prank will hurt to visit, so it should hurt us to build it." It's peak humor.
8:44 Ah yes, the real reason I would never be able to join the server. Not because I don't know any of them irl, not because I'm rubbish at the game, not because my recording time is severely restricted by outside responsibilities and I can never arrange meeting-up times even with the friends I have... it's because *_effort._*
this video has made me really want to rewatch past seasons of hermitcraft, especially the ones I kinda missed there's _so much_ but it'd be so worth it
Theres also the branching series from Hermitcraft (and also Empires) such as the Life SMPs and the modded series like the vault hunter thing iskall did. All of these add even more content, particularly when the Hermits involved are getting tired of the regular season.
Full adult here that loves hermitcraft. I’ve enjoyed watching Minecraft videos for some time but I’ve stuck with this crew for years since I found them because of what a crazy good environment they have cultivated. It’s clear they put in the work to make their interactions fun, casual, and positive.
11:17 personally i would recommend starting with season 8, not only is it the shortest season, but it's also my personal favorite even though i started with season 6
the thing i love about hermitcraft is that every hermit has their own unique episodes, and when you switch perspectives it isnt repetitive. im watching 7 different hermits rn and i am just never bored, ive never found that with other series.
Great video! You've really brought up a lot of solid points! I think you can't highlight enough how clever Grian is in his marketing approach for Hermitcraft. He is responsible for so many of the important events, and has probably cause thousands of people to start watching other perspectives too. The community is so kind-hearted, and the Hermits are each amazing in their own way. Seeing any other Hermit appear in someone's video just puts a smile on my face. The fact that they're able to pull that off is nothing short of amazing.
I've been watching HC regularly since Grian's ep4 of season 7, and have not regretted it once. It was such an experience to watch as the mansion and the barge were built up bit by bit, the progression of the mayoral race, then the mycelium resistance and eventually the turf war, seeing the hermits play Decked out, seeing the base swap play out and trying to figure out what that machine would do beforehand, not to mention all the little interactions and bits in each episode. Season 7 is definitely still my favorite season 4 years later, and I'd highly recommend Grians pov if you haven't watched it yet
This was a really well-made and produced video. As a Hermitcraft viewer myself, it's hard to describe what it really *is* and how it's great but you summed it up pretty well.
As someone who grew up with the yogscast complete servers which WERE basically this, I can't explain how happy it made me to discover these types of lets plays are still going. I have so many friends because of that shared interest.
hermitcraft is hermitcraft. it's its own genre and thing. hermitcraft is a community of the hermits involved and their communities. there's a magic to hermitcraft you will not find elsewhere. there's something for probably everyone (i also heavy watch grian, mumbo, doc, gem, BDubbs, Etho, skall, scar, tango, and wes :) ) oh yeah. and rust in peace TFC
I believe you could enjoy hermitcraft without being into minecraft or gaming. Its long form storytelling. Very relaxing most of the time. A constant source of inspiration if you do play. Seeing the giant projects transform from a empty field into a sprawling biome is amazing
Quick correction, Tango's Deep Frost Citadel was the decoration and front door (!!!) for Decked Out 2 in season 9, not his base in season 7, which was Toon Town if I remember correctly. Otherwise good video! I've been a regular HermitCraft viewer since season 5 and you're absolutely right in saying that there really is nothing else quite like it on TH-cam!
Ive noticed that with each new season i always pick a handful of hermits that i consistently watch all their videos but each season its always a different handful of hermits (execept with the exemption of my all time faves being bdubs and etho)
Every single Minecraft community is brought together by this series, mostly the Building and Technical communities but they sometimes do cool PVP stuff (Total Chaos is fun to watch) even if it's none of the Hermit's main focus. The combined knowledge on this server is completely unmatched, except maybe by SciCraft. Docm77 (my favourite), Cubfan, Tangotek (I mean, what even was Decked Out in Season 9? he's insane) Zedaph, Xisuma and Etho are all insane redstoners (Mumbo is also THE biggest Redstone TH-camr) and the rest of the Hermits are all either crazy good at building or are cracked some other niche things (like... VintageBeef's map art ability is just... wow). Iskall even brings the modded community into things as the lead dev of Vault Hunters. But what makes it work as a collaborative server is that they all seem to just click with each other, organically making their own little story arcs, challenges, dramas and just pushing their abilities (like, Doc is at the pinnacle of technical Minecraft at this point, he breaks the game every season with the Hivemind backing him up). Each Season is like a huge work of art, put together bit by bit.
I adore the hermits. I watch 17/27 and the Hermitcraft Recap (a show for the fans made by fans) to cover everything I missed from the other hermits. I love the way they are all good friends and the shenanigans and wholesome interactions, but also the skill and impressive builds and redstone structures they create. Truly something for everyone whether you want building artists (Pearl, Bdubs, Scar), mad redstone scientists (Tango, Doc, Cub), redstone farms (X, Impulse), or more balanced players (False, Skiz) and so much more with hermits that cover everything in-between. The fandom is the most welcoming wholesome fandom I have ever experienced, fanart and headcannons and fun lore. The way the hermits inspire the fandom to create more, like the Hermitcraft Recap and the animations, the Life Series (although it is a separate series but half the cast are hermits) and thousands of pieces of fanart. The hermits actually engaging with the audience and reaching out to fanartist for the TCG cards and Doc's thumbnails, how happy they sound talking about the cool art they've seen on Twitter/X, Reddit and Tumblr. Tuning in to Hermitcraft every week and most days to see what's happening on the server is the best way to chill and gives a warm cozy feeling, laughing at jokes or shenanigans and silly moments as well as tears for the heartfelt talk several hermits share. There is nothing like Hermitcraft in media. I think the thing that separates it from everything else is the hermits themselves and the way they push for community. No hermit is asked to join unless the entire group agrees, they use that system for all the decisions for the group if one of them says no then it doesn't happen. I love that they are being more open with the audience, slowing down and having more fun with friends. Yes the builds are insane and massive achievements but it's also an insane amount of time that goes into those 40s timelapses, let them have fun together. The hermits are an amazing group of people that use the community they've worked hard to build to help others (Gamer's Outreach, the school in Gana) and bring that sense of community to their fans. ❤
I love Hermitcraft. I've been watching since Grian joined, and it's so cool to see all these players get together and make such a beautiful world each season!
Season 6 was peak, I don't care what people say, yes, it went on for a long time, but stuff kept happenning to keep it entertaining, the great prank war is still the greatest event the series has seen.
Personally I find one of the best bits of the current season is the fact that they are friends that enjoy each others company, especially when they start procrastinating about getting on with the work they have to do to produce their main videos. This happens mostly on the [unedited] streams (which are often rebroadcast on the hermit's second channels and are often 2-3 hours long). There is almost always a friend on the server they can chat to if they feel the need. The fact that they can still regularly entertain a couple of thousand people when they are doing something as simple as collecting resources )or as hard as doing redstone on stream), or just shooting the breeze with other hermits (and they don't even have Wind Charges yet!), is a testament to their ability.
Thank you for making this video. I'm not in the hermitcraft side of the mcyt fandom but I was fairly active in the dsmp and qsmp sides and i've considered hermitcraft fans to be like fandom neighbours (I occasionally reblog a lot of fanart because it looks cool even if I don't watch it). I really appreciate you making this video because you've made me understand the appeal of it a lot better and I'm now considering checking it out when I have the time :0
Oooh if you do have fun! Speaking as someone who’s been watching for a while it’s a pretty fun fandom to be in. If you want any advice I’d say to check out the hermitcraft recap. They’re not mentioned in this video but every week they put out a video recapping what every hermit did that week it’s a great way to catch up for people joining in the middle of seasons it can also help you figure out which hermit you want to watch. If you’re not sure at first I’d say stating with grian is good as he’s in the center of a lot of things and that will introduce you to the group that’s immediately around him this season. Happy Watching!
I definitely recommend s10. You see a lot of interactions this season and see their personalities, characters and how they go about playing and creating in the game.❤
Amazing video, you summarized almost everything I have to say about Hermitcraft really well. Despite being a funny little Minecraft series, I think it does deserve the overview that you gave it, as a fully fledged show. It's also *absolutely insane* how a show that is this casual in format and simplistic in editing styles has managed to survive this drastic change in TH-cam content that heavily favours clickbait and fast, energetic, overstuffed bullshit over more calmly paced media. And that's great! Hermitcraft is a true shining beacon, showing what Minecraft and TH-cam content in general looks like at its peak, and how much potential it still holds. Also, if you like Hermitcraft, I recommend watching Grian's *''Life Series''* (which started with Third Life). It's basically like Hermitcraft, it even features most of the same people, except amped to the max and WAY more combat-oriented and story-based. The main concept is that it's a short pseudo-Hardcore series with a limited amount of lives, where anyone who reaches their final life becomes hostile and is tasked with murdering anybody else who isn't. It's an experience that is very hard to concisely explain, and considering how short most of the seasons are, it's much better watched than explained anyways. The fact that absolutley everybody makes content and produces a lot of points of view, just like in Hermitcraft, works to an even better favour of the Life Series than the aforementioned, as you get to see all the crazy bloodshed, drama and motivations of the members much better. Plus, everybody plays at the same time, meaning the series is consistently jam-packed with super fun and iconic social interractions, thing that is already the main selling point of Hermitcraft, amplified even further here.
Great video 😊 I love Hermitcraft. Came to it after getting in to MC with my kid, we both adore the game and the Hermits. We used to watch Magma, then saw Mumbo (your biggest fan!) on a Magma episode so started watching him, then Grian, then Season 6 and here we are 4 years later. Watch as much as I can, it really is my happy space and I think they are all amazing and wonderful.
One really important thing why Hermitcraft works is the community and the efforts the Hermits make to keep the community friendly. As someone who came from DSMP, being allowed to just enjoy your weekly video of people doing fun things was like a breath of fresh air. I don't need to know everything to be considered a fan and I don't have to keep up with controversy's because there are non. I've also never seen a community so happy not to get any content because we are all mature enough to understand that people need a break from work and we don't want our favourite creators to get burned out.
One thing that people tend to misunderstood is they think hermitcraft requires hermits to be professional builders Is just as the hermits said, it's just friends playing minecraft
I found my way over to hermitcraft from minedcrack around s6 I think and it’s been one of my fave smps ever. The only other smps I would consider ‘better’ were more story based and that puts them into a whole diff category. For me it’s the people on the server that make it so good. Especially in this recent season and their decision to b a little less hermit like it has been amazing. The addition of gem and pearl in s8 was a great idea them both being such great creators but in different chaotic way. Then this seasons additions of Joel and skizz felt like something a long time coming w their major involvement in grians life series. Their honest love and respect for one another just makes for some of the best if not craziest moment in Minecraft yt💜
Season 7 was my favourite season, but looking back on it now I realise that was probably due to the perspective shifting reason you talked about, since due to COVID I watched pretty much everyone’s episodes.
I want to add another amazing feature: The World Download. To me as a player it's just incredible to walk around in the builds of all the hermits. You can play the mini games and marvel at some of doc's redstone magic. It's just great.
It's ridiculous to think that I have been watching hermitcraft since s5. Started with only Mumbo's pov, then iskall, then grian when he joined s6, then scar, and now Joel. The funny thing is that I started watching it at the same time I was learning english, as it's not my first language, and I learned SO much of the british slangs and English vocabulary in general. So yeah! You can check that out of the reasons I love hermitcraft!
Great video, I'm surprised you didn't mention Mindcrack! It was basically the predecessor of Hermitcraft, and from what I remember, generikb started Hermitcraft since he wasn't able to get into Mindcrack, probably because he had a relatively low sub count at the time. I don't know/remember what happened to Mindcrack, although Bdubs/Doc/Etho moved over, originally from the other server. Hermitcraft is so fun, I'm glad it's blown up so big over the years.
And when you are playing Minecraft, seeing a bunch of people making stuff at a way higher quality is kind of like the gaming equivalent of watching those weird gardening shows dads and grandparents watch in the late afternoon.
Hermitcraft is Hermitcraft. You want to and try to watch all the hermits, but never miss that dozen you love. Beyond the entertainment, you cant help learn and become a better minecrafter by pure osmosis. But there is one other special thing about Hermitcraft, the fans. Collectively they are one of the most dedicated and generous fan bases ever !
Watching Keralis' Hermitcraft videos feels like a father/son bonding session :) (I've also been watching his videos for over a decade now, which makes for a lot of nostalgia:) )
I love hermit craft and everything you say here is true! I’m actually shocked I hadn’t been watching it sooner but I got pulled in at season 8 when gem and pearl joined
Ive loved hermitcraft since the end of season 7 and honesty im so glad ive watched since. Im not a avid watcher of course but when i geet bored i can binge ones season so far and catch up to them. Also outside the herits group they also have frequent friends in their other video's which make it interestinv (100 day hardcore series, Tne life series, Guess the build, and the collab livestreams, plus empires hermitcraft crossover.) It clearly shows how much the group enjoys eachothers company and outside of hermitcraft they are all friends. Its a beautiful group of amazing people and im honestly so happy to watch. Sorru for the rant but Im gonna like the video and sub cause this was realy great dude! Keep up the work.
Seeing alll the old builds and bases, old skins, fanart, and that lovely throwback to grians old Timelapse music (oh that made me dance before I even realized what was playing and it makes me miss it so much) at 8:56 yeaaaah Yes yes yes When people ask me hey why do you watch this kinda Isn’t this like Weird And I thought to myself for a bit and realzied I’m here for the creativity, the fun, but most of all, their interactions together. I love watching their bases come together, I love trying to imagine what it would look like and then comparing that to how it turns out, but most of all, I love it when someone just pops in and the weirdest conversations and shenanigans ensue. Even the odd, tiny pick ups of phrases like “neck kisses” becoming a standard sign off… the game breaking nature of some of the hermits is another welcome wonder, around grian, the game just breaks, red stone breaks, people break, around doc, he is bound by nothing, around gem, necks Things are fun on this server The main thing is that everyone gets along Everyone is so different but so alike And if anything They’re all joined by a love for Minecraft and an intense creativity, and skizz is the perfect, beautiful proof that skill in Minecraft if not the only thing that drives these amazing people, they’re amazing in many, many ways, and even more so together
really good analysis from a media perspective about it, this was fun to watch. definitely agree that the draw is having so many options and so many ways things can play out, i definitely watch some different people now than when i started watching hermitcraft back in season 5 but also some of the same people, and things have definitely changed across them but naturally just on who is in the season and what people decide to do. dang i did not realize ive been watching five seasons of this what
I've been a fan of DnD actual play podcasts for 5-ish years, and a Hermitcraft fan since the start of S9. It's surprising how similar those two are. On the one hands it's improv, but there's also a great amount of production, deep storylines, everyone is a main character (in the good way), etc I agree that if all other forms of entertainment evaporated I could totally live with just these.
I agree! (I know that's my second time saying I agree in your comments, but you keep making videos I agree with)
I also agree!
Do you also agree with the fact that you're a spoon? :P
woah
not at all bias lol.
Thanks once again :)

They're adults looking for cooperative efforts and creative associates, not teenagers chasing clout looking for dramas. It's a solid foundation for long-lasting partnership. Surprisingly they each have their own unique personality ranging from calculated experimental addict to menace of society, yet their interaction is never dull

They also raised $850,000 during the charity as well.
@@nerdjournaltango and zedaph wher friends before hermitcraft
You also didn't mention the Recap, a show by fans for fans which really helps fans keep up on events they would have otherwise not had time for! It's a life saver
Absolutely! Watching Hermitcraft would be a lot more stressful if it wasn’t for the recap. You’d just be scared of missing stuff.
I totally forgot about that. Much appreciated! I just came back to Hermitcraft from S8. The Recap will help guide my journey.
I love that show! There's so many Hermits it's hard to keep up with all the shenanigans, but that's where Recaps comes in. Without recaps I would never have known about Docm77 - who's now one of my favorites!
For reals, Zloy, Pix, and Lyarrah are saints. I love all the hermits but there's no way I could watch everyone's episodes
Thankfully Recap exists. I don't know if I'd keep going on Hermicraft without them.

@@mr.tophat6592 pretty sure there was more than 3 lol, judging by things Grain was saying. That was definitely one of my favorite parts of that whole thing XD the sheer dedication to the bit was really something
Honestly what makes Hermitcraft and the Life Series so great is threefold
A. They don't drag on and on and on
B. They're just a bunch of people goofing around and making silly little projects together
The thing i love about hermitcraft is that its practically infinite content, you would need to be superhuman to watch 40+ 30 minute videos in a week.
that's the beauty of the Hermitcraft Recap!
I use 2x speed, but that is still like 10 hours
I got burned out trying to do that and still haven't watched a new episode since Decked out 2 😭😭😭
Maybe I should only focus on my absolute favourite Hermits but even that is like 6 people, Etho, Doc, Bdubs, Grain, Mumbo, Ren. Oh and Scar, so 7 actually, and I also love all the others Episodes Aswell, Tango, Pearl and many more.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
@@GreenDeemonll Yeah trying to keep caught up with decked out two was not good for my school grades😂

You know it's a good show when it happens entirely within Minecraft and yet somebody in their late 40's that hasn't even played Minecraft enjoys it.
11:24 strong disagree Joel calls me names in every episode
Hey fellow thumb!
Joel being actively hostile towards himself and the audience in a bit of a goofy way is what make his videos so funny.
Gotta love it though
I came down here just to find this🎉
I thought the same thing
Now that you brought it up I do kinda wanna see a TV show in which you can switch who the main character is.
Wouldn't it be cool? Like switching to a totally different perspective for the same events? You can pick and choose when you want to see the villains planning
@@thehayze259 an interactive show sounds cool but would probably cost a ton
@@eduardpeeterlemming Netflix has done some interactive shows before if I'm not mistaken, so it definitely seems possible. Though, as far as I'm aware, Netflix hasn't done anything to that scale, either. At least not yet.
I know there's a mystery show called "Afterparty" where each episode is from a different character's perspective. That might be the closest you can get as of now.
That sounds cool in theory, but I do think that TH-cam videos are in a very unique space where they're really the only format that could possibly work like that without just the most insane budget or some really bad writing

I'm not quite your age yet, but we have very similar watching habits, which is interesting.
I do HATE those scripted smp things. Just play with your Friends, PLEASE
It's like if reality tv was made by good people.

I will remind you that Joe did in fact *not* win dog catcher unanimously, as there was a single vote for Daffy Duck.
Another mention for why HC works so well, the personalities/Hermits themselves:
You mentioned a lot about Grian and Mumbo, their own quirkiness as friends and creating chaos, but even beyond them, all of them have different vibes which us as fans get something different with each.
Comparing Zed to Curious George is never a comparison I would have thought of, but it works so well
im so happy skizz was able to become a hermit
Great video. Another way to answer "What is Hermitcraft": "It's like one great, big, dysfunctional family." ~ TFC (How he describes it to Grian at the start of season 6)
XD That is a perfect description
Rest in peace TFC
I think the main way you could improve is mentioning the Hermitctaft Recap. If you only follow a few hermits you still have news from the whole server
yeah Hermitcraft Recaps helps a lot with getting to know what the other hermits you haven't been watching were up to.
I gotta check out his videos.”
And by the end of Season 7 I was watching both Mumbo and Scar.
Calling Hermitcraft loony tunes is sooo correct that I will now always describe it that way

How dare you mention pvp and not talk about Gemini SLAY
fr..shes always slayin✨🤌
As someone who was never good at PVP, Hermitcraft is the kind of server I would live to play on (when compared to something like factions servers).
8:44 That music took me waaaay back...
I also think it is important to mention how important it is to have seasons which makes sure it never get's stale, allows the members to focus on the new additions to the game, and once again built new mega bases.
"most people only watch 1-3 different hermits"
me whose autistic special interest is hermitcraft regularly watching 15 a week and trying to catch up on the rest too 😭
Another great thing about Hermitcraft that I found particularly great is that you don't have to watch the previous seasons to understand the current one.
Thank you so much for wording this in such a beautiful way. This. This is Hermitcraft.
great video, well said on every point. i'm 41 years old, and still love Minecraft (despite not actually playing much of it myself these days), so i watch basically every Mumbo video, and some others scattered throughout. i'd also like to tack on the whole crossover they did with Empires SMP, which is another similarly entertaining series. not to mention Grian's whole "Life Series" of short one-off SMPs featuring basically everyone from Hermitcraft and Empires over the course of all of them.
Everyone was starting to prank everyone else more aggressively, and Joe opens his video with his regular opening, then finishes with the line "Cleo, you woke me up early enough to go to the airport, so come to your base, what's going on?" Cleo responds "I need someone to make it weird, and that's always you."
Joe proceeded to build the "Hall of Atonement", which might have been the funniest episode I've ever watched.
Not because I don't know any of them irl, not because I'm rubbish at the game, not because my recording time is severely restricted by outside responsibilities and I can never arrange meeting-up times even with the friends I have... it's because *_effort._*
this video has made me really want to rewatch past seasons of hermitcraft, especially the ones I kinda missed
there's _so much_ but it'd be so worth it
Theres also the branching series from Hermitcraft (and also Empires) such as the Life SMPs and the modded series like the vault hunter thing iskall did.
It’s clear they put in the work to make their interactions fun, casual, and positive.
i got into hermitcraft during the pandemic, watched one Grian Video and got instantly hooked on everything, watching nearly every hermit
Literally just got done with your other Minecraft video and saw this. The timing is perfect!
As someone who grew up with the yogscast complete servers which WERE basically this, I can't explain how happy it made me to discover these types of lets plays are still going. I have so many friends because of that shared interest.
hermitcraft is hermitcraft. it's its own genre and thing. hermitcraft is a community of the hermits involved and their communities. there's a magic to hermitcraft you will not find elsewhere. there's something for probably everyone
(i also heavy watch grian, mumbo, doc, gem, BDubbs, Etho, skall, scar, tango, and wes :) )
oh yeah. and rust in peace TFC
It's one of my favorite TV shows. I watch a lot of hermits and they've provided me many years of enjoyment.
I believe you could enjoy hermitcraft without being into minecraft or gaming. Its long form storytelling. Very relaxing most of the time.
A constant source of inspiration if you do play. Seeing the giant projects transform from a empty field into a sprawling biome is amazing
11:29 Well… all but one. I get called an idiot at least 5 times an episode by Joel
I forgot about the tall house build off. God that was so long ago now
What an utterly lovely video!
5:30 Jono is Ren’s brother I believe actually
Also great video! It’s very accurate.
i am honestly loving your hermitcraft documentary’s
I watch 16 Hermits videos... it can be a lot sometimes... but so funny and always worth it.
I second that ^^
I definitely recommend s10. You see a lot of interactions this season and see their personalities, characters and how they go about playing and creating in the game.❤
"Fandom neighbour" is a great way to put it
Hermitcraft has been a large part of my life since season 6 with Sahara
One thing that people tend to misunderstood is they think hermitcraft requires hermits to be professional builders
Is just as the hermits said, it's just friends playing minecraft
This season i have been watching EVERY SINGLE HERMIT and they are all amazing!
I want to add another amazing feature: The World Download. To me as a player it's just incredible to walk around in the builds of all the hermits. You can play the mini games and marvel at some of doc's redstone magic. It's just great.
The CALLOUT about me playing videogames and watching this in a background!!!
And when you are playing Minecraft, seeing a bunch of people making stuff at a way higher quality is kind of like the gaming equivalent of watching those weird gardening shows dads and grandparents watch in the late afternoon.
thank you for this love letter to hermitcraft, could not have said it better!
Great summary, and bound to get everyone not already watching, watching.
I love hermit craft and everything you say here is true! I’m actually shocked I hadn’t been watching it sooner but I got pulled in at season 8 when gem and pearl joined
Everyone has such good social chemistry on this server
I basically never play Minecraft anymore, but I get my fill through all these amazing creators
Ive loved hermitcraft since the end of season 7 and honesty im so glad ive watched since. Im not a avid watcher of course but when i geet bored i can binge ones season so far and catch up to them.
Also outside the herits group they also have frequent friends in their other video's which make it interestinv (100 day hardcore series, Tne life series, Guess the build, and the collab livestreams, plus empires hermitcraft crossover.)
It clearly shows how much the group enjoys eachothers company and outside of hermitcraft they are all friends. Its a beautiful group of amazing people and im honestly so happy to watch.
Sorru for the rant but Im gonna like the video and sub cause this was realy great dude! Keep up the work.
Great video! Wanted to say that Bdubs also helped build a large portion of the town hall gor the mayoral race in Season 7.
Seeing alll the old builds and bases, old skins, fanart, and that lovely throwback to grians old Timelapse music (oh that made me dance before I even realized what was playing and it makes me miss it so much) at 8:56 yeaaaah
Yes yes yes
When people ask me hey why do you watch this kinda
Isn’t this like
Weird
And I thought to myself for a bit and realzied I’m here for the creativity, the fun, but most of all, their interactions together. I love watching their bases come together, I love trying to imagine what it would look like and then comparing that to how it turns out, but most of all, I love it when someone just pops in and the weirdest conversations and shenanigans ensue. Even the odd, tiny pick ups of phrases like “neck kisses” becoming a standard sign off… the game breaking nature of some of the hermits is another welcome wonder, around grian, the game just breaks, red stone breaks, people break, around doc, he is bound by nothing, around gem, necks
Things are fun on this server
The main thing is that everyone gets along
Everyone is so different but so alike
And if anything
They’re all joined by a love for Minecraft and an intense creativity, and skizz is the perfect, beautiful proof that skill in Minecraft if not the only thing that drives these amazing people, they’re amazing in many, many ways, and even more so together
really good analysis from a media perspective about it, this was fun to watch. definitely agree that the draw is having so many options and so many ways things can play out, i definitely watch some different people now than when i started watching hermitcraft back in season 5 but also some of the same people, and things have definitely changed across them but naturally just on who is in the season and what people decide to do.
dang i did not realize ive been watching five seasons of this what
3:35 i watch grain, mumbo, tango, and sometimes scar.
i mostly watch Mumbo and Doc
Who is this grain character
@@Shoe_with_no_lace a member of hermitcraft that likes to build, prank people, and cause a mess sometimes
I've been a fan of DnD actual play podcasts for 5-ish years, and a Hermitcraft fan since the start of S9.
It's surprising how similar those two are. On the one hands it's improv, but there's also a great amount of production, deep storylines, everyone is a main character (in the good way), etc
I agree that if all other forms of entertainment evaporated I could totally live with just these.
